About the course

The MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at the University of Hertfordshire is a one year programme for graduates in English, with little or no teaching experience who want an initial preparation course in English Language Teaching at post-graduate level.

The programme gives an in-depth introduction to the teaching of English and provides a strong practical foundation for future development. A practical teaching element is a central feature of the programme; students will participate in practice teaching sessions throughout their study period. It is a twelve month full-time programme.

The two taught semesters (Semester A & B) are examined by coursework and lead to a Post-Graduate Diploma in the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. These are followed by a dissertation in Semester C (June - September), successful completion of which will lead to an MA (TESOL).

The programme will cover the following areas:

  • A practical introduction to English Language teaching (including: observation of experienced ELT professionals & 4-6 hours of teaching practice)
  • In-depth analysis of the English Language (phonology, grammar, vocabulary and pragmatics of spoken and written English) to enhance knowledge of language for English language teaching
  • Study of the extent and range of uses of English
  • Theoretical insights into how languages are learned

Graduates of the programme will be qualified for jobs teaching English at a range of levels in most countries of the world. They will be able to take on positions of responsibility at course design, and course management levels.

Teaching methods

The programme content will be covered by lectures introducing the various topics. The lectures will be supplemented with workshops, out of class reading and seminar discussions. Practical tasks and assignments supported by relevant theory and discussion will also be used. In the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages modules, demonstration lessons showing a range of English language teaching methodologies will be given. Students will also observe lessons, discuss and evaluate the teaching of peers and experienced professionals and take part in supervised lesson planning and feedback on their own planning and teaching.

About the course

Clinical Academic Programme -

The academic programme is based on a ‘core competency’ model (BPS, 2007) and comprises four main areas of teaching: Professional Practice and Personal Development; Therapeutic Models and Interventions; Research Methods in Clinical Psychology; and Client Groups and Client Contexts.

Each of these four areas is further divided into a number of specific teaching modules that span the three years of training and correspond as much as possible with the structure and sequence of clinical placements. An awareness of the issues of ethical practice and equality for all is highlighted in all modules. Particular consideration is given to the many ways in which issues relating to diversity and inequality impact on the work of practising clinical psychologists within the lectures, and all lectures are formally evaluated on this by the trainees. Additionally, there are specific lectures considering a wide range of diversity issues within the Clients in Context module taught across the three years.

Four models of psychological therapy are currently taught on the programme: cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), systemic and family psychotherapy, personal construct therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy. The content of the introductory CBT module is mapped onto the IAPT curriculum to enable trainees to include this in their portfolio of competencies, should they wish to seek employment where this is a specific requirement. More advanced training is provided in the third year of training. A previous trainee recently gained accreditation with the BABCP based on their CBT training at the University of Hertfordshire.

The academic programme is located within the overall programme philosophy which places particular emphasis on incorporating constructivist and social constructionist approaches to conceptualising psychological difficulties and their management. In line with the programme philosophy, an important aim of the academic programme is to train clinical psychologists who can understand and apply a range of psychological theories and approaches to both clinical practice and research. We teach our trainees to draw on multiple theoretical and evidence bases to develop individually tailored assessments, formulations, interventions and evaluations of complex psychological problems. We emphasise the flexibility to adapt and combine different approaches as a key competence, and our curriculum therefore aims to develop a broad, thorough and sophisticated understanding of various psychological theories and therapeutic approaches.

Service User Participation:

The DClinpsych course encourages service user and carers' participation in the training and have established a committee of service users and carers who consult and participate in the training course.

Problem Based learning -

Problem-based learning (PBL) forms an important part of clinical training at the University of Hertfordshire. As part of the academic programme trainees complete a series of small-group based PBL exercises, which aim to promote reflective, collaborative and self-directed learning.

Throughout the three years, trainees also participate in a series of small group discussions to consider academic papers and clinical cases. These discussions provide an academic context for trainees to integrate theory and research, to highlight theory-practice links, and to enable peer review of formulation and intervention plans. More formal case presentations are undertaken in the third year.

A unique feature of our clinical psychology training at UH is the access that our teachers and trainees have to a purpose-built, advanced simulation training centre.

The trainees are regarded as mature students, and for this reason an adult learning model is adopted. In line with this model and the overall programme philosophy, it is recognised that not only do trainees learn in different ways, but also that they can pursue their own perceptions of the material being taught and interpret it for themselves.

In line with HPC requirements for all clinical training programmes, all trainees selected will be informed of the various activities that form part of the academic curriculum (e.g., role-plays, problem-based learning, simulation training, small group discussions, etc). Consent to participate in all aspects of the academic programme will be sought prior to the programme commencing.

Our next intake of Trainees will be at the end of September 2016. Application packs are available from the Clearing House from September 2015, and the deadline for applications is early December 2015.

Each academic year starts at the end of September or beginning of October with a compulsory four-week, full-time introductory block of teaching. This is followed by teaching all day on Thursdays and Fridays during term-time.

Up to two fee-paying places, on our doctoral programme for International, European and British applicants, are available for entry in Autumn 2015. Fee-paying students will follow the same programme of study as trainees with NHS funded places.

Why choose this course?

The course has a particular remit to train clinical psychologists to take up NHS positions. Clinical psychologists working in the region support the course, and many are working in collaboration with the Programme Team to provide placement supervision, research supervision, teaching and skills workshops.
The DClinPsy Trainees attend the University for their lectures, seminars and tutor support, but also spend approximately three days per week on their clinical placements.

In line with the concept of the "scientist-practitioner", the programme of research aims to equip trainees with the knowledge and skills required to undertake high-quality research, appraise literature critically, and adopt an evidence-based approach to clinical practice, where possible. The aim of this MSc is to provide a postgraduate education in pharmacovigilance, including relevant techniques, the basis of adverse drug reactions, regulations and guidelines, handling safety issues including labelling and risk management and systems and processes. Teaching consists of lectures and workshop activities in small groups and takes into account real world situations. There are opportunities for sharing experiences and networking which contributes to the development of your knowledge and understanding of pharmacovigilance issues.

Flexible programme

This is a flexible programme designed to meet the needs of those in either full or part-time employment who are likely to have a spread of responsibilities. Students are able to complete the MSc course in under three years if able to attend all modules at the earliest opportunity. Alternatively, they can take up to five years, progressing at a slower pace.

Participants will normally be graduates and/or experienced personnel and usually will need to have held positions in drug safety for one to several years. The programme is run as a series of intensive short courses supplemented with substantial pre and post-course reading and set coursework. In addition, if you are studying for an MSc, you will undertake a research project that is normally carried out at your workplace but may be done at the University, or an institution with appropriate experience of pharmacovigilance or adverse drug reactions.

The programme has attracted students from European Union countries, Norway, Switzerland, Japan and the USA and its success has led to the organisation of an annual Pharmacovigilance Update day for those who have completed their studies.

Recruitment will take place at the beginning of each taught module and the programme offers the awards of a PgC, PgD or MSc. Students are typically able to obtain any one of the awards in a minimum of two years; however you have a maximum registration of up to five years in order to complete the course. This course has the option of being a diploma if you do not feel you can commit to the full MSc programme.

Potential candidates will normally be in either full or part-time employment and are likely to have a spread of responsibilities, mostly in pharmacovigilance and medical information, monitoring safety data in either pre- and post-marketing studies or from spontaneous reports. They will be graduates and/or experienced personnel and usually will have held positions in drug safety for one to several years. Some applicants may have doctorates and may be medically qualified. Following successful completion of the course the knowledge gained should enable the post-graduates to make a greater contribution to the pharmacovigilance industry.

Teaching methods

Taught modules normally consist of approximately 24 hours class contact. In addition, about 120 hours will be needed to complete the pre and post-course activities. The actual amount of time spent will depend upon your existing knowledge and ability. All modules are free-standing. Satisfactory completion of four modules is compulsory for the PgCert; all eight modules are required for the PgDip and MSc. Coursework will contribute significantly to assessment and may comprise some or all of the following: summaries of pre-course reading, written reports of class discussions, essays, performances in seminars, poster presentations, problem solving or data interpretation exercise, short projects and case studies. Unseen written examinations will feature in some courses; they may be used to examine understanding of pre-course reading material. Attendance at the taught component and satisfactory completion of both coursework and examinations (where present), with a minimum mark of 50% in each element, is normally required to pass each module.

While an MA/MSc is a taught, modular programme, a Masters by Research is a programme of research and skills development negotiated with your supervisors and based on your own research proposal.

About the course

The Masters by Research degree may be undertaken in full-time (1 year) or part-time (2 year) modes in any creative arts discipline that the School engages with and for which we have appropriately qualified supervisory staff. In the School of Creative Arts we have a wide range of expertise in historical and theoretical research, as well as in practice-led/practice-based research, relating to fine and applied arts, film, media and TV studies, interior and architectural design, music and the music industry.

During the period of study for the Masters by Research degree you will develop a greater depth of subject expertise and independent research skills. You will undertake a focused research project for the duration of the degree, under the supervision and guidance of two or more academic members of staff who are your supervisors. In addition you will engage with a negotiated programme of selected generic skills development and careers workshops provided by the University of Hertfordshire Doctoral College.

Your Masters by Research project project may be purely theoretical or contain elements of your own practice. If there is a practice element, one of your supervisors would be a practitioner in an appropriate discipline, and appropriate studio space and/or workshop facilities would be made available if necessary. The School has a wide range of outstanding facilities for researchers in the broad area of creative arts, and the University library has an excellent range of relevant and up-to-date resources to support research in this area.

During the course of the degree, you would typically be given opportunities present your research at seminars and conferences, and to exhibit your practical work if it is part of the research project. Some opportunities in this regard may be provided by the School or the University.

We offer a range of subject specific research training throughout various research group seminars. Our research students are strongly encouraged to participate in modules in our taught Masters programmes, and the University also has an extensive Researcher Development Programme, which is provided by the UH Doctoral College and offers generic research training.

The Masters by Research has two main assessment points after enrolment: Initial Registration for the degree after 3 months for both full-time and part-time students, and the final examination. Your research will be examined on the basis of the final submission which may include a combination of both written and non-textual material that must be "defended" in a viva and contain a thesis (a position that can be defended by substantiated argument).

Our MA programme takes an innovative approach by connecting the local to the global. The study of everyday life is central to the identity of the History Group, and this is reflected in the range of modules that we offer. Covering the period from 1550 to the present, you will explore the impact of big historical forces on everyday lives.     

You will take two subject modules in the first semester.  Money-makers, Murderers, Medics and Mothers uncovers the multifaceted nature of women’s lives in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In Local and Global you will examine the impact of the development of consumer societies on communities and cultures from the 18th to the 21st centuries. In the second semester, you will explore the effects of major changes in global history on individual lives and communities in Britain and other parts of the world in History from the Street

Alongside these subject modules, you will take two research methods modules. Semester A will support you as you transition from undergraduate to postgraduate studies. Semester B will train you to write for different audiences and help you prepare for your dissertation. 

The Taught MA programme culminates with a 15,000-word dissertation on a topic of your choice, supervised by an expert in the field. 

If you choose to study part-time over two years, you will take one subject module and one research methods module in semester A and one subject module in semester B of year one. In year two, you would take one subject module in semester A and one research module, as well as writing your dissertation.

Employability underpins what we do. You will further hone the transferable skills that you have begun to develop as an undergraduate. We also train you to write for different audiences, helping to diversify your writing style. There is also the opportunity to work with our renowned staff-student Oral History team, which has taken students to Australia and produced a BBC Radio 4 documentary. The documentary was commended at the 2018 Royal Historical Society Public History Awards. 

As one of our MA students you will benefit from being part of a diverse and active academic community. We see our postgraduate students as fellow researchers, and we place a great deal of importance on sharing and developing skills. You will have access to our ‘History café’, an informal get together before classes at which you can socialise with other postgraduates in Humanities. There is a vibrant PhD and Early Career Researchers Network attached to our Everyday Lives in War engagement centre. We hold a dedicated postgraduate session at our annual staff-student weekend at Cumberland Lodge, a former royal residence in Windsor Great Park. We encourage our postgraduates to attend IHR seminars that are convened by members of the History Group, and the Group also has institutional membership of the IHR.

Teaching methods

Teaching will be in small group seminars on weekday early evenings, led by members of the History group with expertise in the field. We may also offer some Saturday sessions for the Research Methods II module.  We also hope to offer a 'History cafe' before seminars for all postgraduates to meet and discuss study skills.

Presentation of research in different formats will be an essential part of the Research Methods modules, offering a ‘hands on history’ approach that develops students’ skills in presenting to the public in accessible formats as well as in standard academic formats. This is a distinctive feature of the programme that will enable employability skills for those looking to use the MA as a stepping stone in their professional career and who may not be going on to further postgraduate study.

Candidates who have completed the MD programme will typically:
• Be able to develop theoretical concepts, systematically design and implement a project with the intention of the generation of new knowledge within a specified clinical area and recognise and adjust for unforeseen problems.
• Demonstrate an advanced understanding of recent advances within the field.
• Demonstrate an advanced understanding of appropriate research techniques and methods of
academic enquiry.
• Provide evidence of original independent and critical thinking.
• Demonstrate an ability to critically analyse and evaluate their own research findings and those of others.
• Provide evidence of the creation of new knowledge or new application of existing knowledge within their clinical area, through original research which advances or extends practice and merits publication.


--- Who should enrol? ---
The MD is offered as a part time programme for Medical Consultants, General Practitioners, Specialist Registrars and other interested medical clinicians. The programme is designed to allow the thesis to be completed over a minimum of two years alongside any existing clinical commitment.

Candidates must provide evidence of personal, professional and educational experience that demonstrates an ability to meet the demands of and benefit from a programme of research training.

In additions candidates wishing to enrol for the award of MD shall satisfy the following criteria:

• Normally have obtained MBBS degrees (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery) or equivalent from a recognised institution.
• Hold or be eligible for full registration or hold limited registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or equivalent.
• Normally have three years relevant professional practice experience.
• Be in employment or have arranged employment for the period of research.


--- Resources ---
Whilst undertaking the programme candidates will have access to a variety of learning opportunities to meet their individual learning needs. This is provided by the generic research training programme. An individual programme of skills development and training will be negotiated with the candidate and supervisory team prior to registration.

Candidates will also have regular opportunities to network with peers via regular monitoring meetings and also via StudyNet, the University’s managed learning environment.


--- Supervision ----
Supervision is provided by a supervisory team made up of at least two supervisors, a university academic and a clinical supervisor. The team will have experience of supervision of at least 2 successful doctoral level studies.

Whilst undergoing the programme and in addition to ongoing supervision by the supervisory team, candidates will undergo periodic progress assessments and must provide evidence of progress of the programme of research, including details of achievements to date and future direction of the work, as well as discussing the approach taken and how the work is contributing to clinical practice.

Careers

Once you have completed the programme and registered with the NMC, most people get some experience as a staff nurse, usually within community or in-patient organisations operating within the NHS, voluntary and independent sectors of health. The opportunities are endless but some ‘typical’ career options are presented below.
-Some people are keen to remain working directly with service users in clinical areas and seek promotion to senior staff nurse or ward sister / manager roles where their expertise is used to lead care given by a team of nurses. Some adult nurses develop particular clinical skills and knowledge that will allow them to become specialist nurses in a given area of care (e.g. district nurse, clinical nurse specialist or nurse consultant).
-These clinical grades co-exist within a wider career framework incorporating management roles such as Modern Matron all the way through to very senior board level roles such as Director of Nursing in an NHS Primary Care or Acute Trust. These roles involve managing multi-million pound budgets and directly leading/ managing a large number of staff as well as strategically influencing how the NHS responds to new developments.
-Some nurses develop interest in research and education and opt to pursue educationally focussed careers within the NHS or in further and higher education institutions such as the University of Hertfordshire. They still retain their professional registration and unique identity as an Adult Nurse but are involved in advancing nursing knowledge and influence through research and education.

Wherever your career takes you, as an Adult Nurse you will never stop learning and will undertake a variety of training and education throughout your career. This might be formal education such as specialist clinical courses or PhD studies or essential skills training associated with professional practice.

Work Placement

You will experience a wide variety of clinical settings including for example:
-Acute Care settings such as general and specialist surgical wards, medical wards, accident and emergency departments etc
-Community based settings such as working with district nurses in service users own homes or in facilities such as GP practices, nursing homes or community hospitals
-You may be placed in settings such as hospices and other private or voluntary organisations which care for a variety of medical conditions and illnesses and health care needs

Placements are organised in blocks of variable duration and will be located anywhere in London. Whilst on placement, you will be supported by a mentor (a qualified nurse who has undertaken post qualifying learning in practice based education); a link lecturer (an academic from within the school who supports mentors in placement areas) and wealth of supportive services available on campus through the student union and student services.

Two compulsory modules – International Energy Law and International Environmental Law – will give you a firm foundation for your studies. In addition, you will select two optional modules which will complement your learning and equip you to meet the challenges and opportunities related to the legal aspects of the oil and gas industry, and the environment.
