Graduate students in our Department not only have the opportunity to learn in an engaging environment but also to teach in one as well. Beginning in their first (for PhD candidates) and second (for MA candidates) years, they gain valuable classroom experience in composition classes, literature surveys, and courses they design themselves. Our program's scholarly and pedagogical preparation, as well as our detailed attention to professional placement, has enabled students to develop careers as teachers, scholars, publishers and editors.

Hudson Strode Program in Renaissance Studies

"Bringing the Globe to Alabama"

The Strode Program is a privately endowed program to promote the study of English literature from Skelton to Milton. The endowment provides for lectures and residencies by distinguished scholars and fellowships for graduate study at the University of Alabama in the field of English Renaissance Literature.

Hudson Strode served on the University of Alabama faculty from 1916 to 1963. He was a prolific author and celebrated teacher of Shakespeare and of creative writing. The Strode program was endowed by Professor Strode and his wife, Thérèse.

Focus: The Graduate Student

The intellectual work and educational activities sponsored by the Strode Program, from fellowships to lecture series, from the Strode Seminar to summer research awards, converge upon a single focus: the graduate student. We have a lively and talented group of students specializing in English Renaissance literature in preparation for careers in colleges and universities, or for other professional or personal goals. The faculty is committed not only to teaching students but also to mentoring them, fostering a community of future scholars.

Our students have won departmental and college awards for teaching and they have won university-wide fellowships for dissertation research. A recent Ph.D. received the College of Arts and Sciences annual award for best dissertation. Topics treated in the dissertations produced by our students are diverse—from readings of Spenser which deploy the theories of Derrida and Lacan to studies of the representation of female sexuality which draw upon seventeenth-century London court records; from adaptations of Shakespeare for teen films to performance criticism of regional and university theatrical productions. Essays written by our students—on Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy, on the agency of the letter in Hamlet, on class conflict in Coriolanus, on Leo Africanus and early modern imperialism, and on queer kinship in The Merchant of Venice—have appeared in Early Modern Literary Studies, English Literary History, English Literary Renaissance, Studies in English Literature, and Shakespeare, among other journals and essay collections.

We have an excellent record of placing Ph.D.s in tenure-track professorships. In the past ten years, 100% of our Ph.D. graduates who went on the academic job market eventually landed tenure-track jobs. Recent graduates have joined the faculty at Cornell College, High Point University, Mercer University, Stephen F. Austin State University, Xavier University, and Youngstown State University. M.A. students have matriculated to Ph.D. programs at Emory, Northwestern, Rutgers, University of California, University of Georgia, University of Oxford, University of Tennessee, and University of Washington, to name a few. Other M.A. students have gone on to law school, library school, the Peace Corps, high school teaching, or other opportunities.

Composition and Rhetoric

The graduate curriculum in CRES (Composition, Rhetoric, and English Studies) provides a solid foundation in English studies with a particular focus on the teaching of writing and studies in language, literacy, and rhetoric. The doctoral program is designed for those seeking academic positions as composition specialists (researchers, teachers, or administrators) in postsecondary English departments that emphasize writing instruction. The MA program is ideal for those who wish to do community college teaching or administrative work, and for students wishing to continue on to the PhD.

The graduate curriculum provides core courses in composition-rhetoric as well as elective opportunities in literature, linguistics, communication studies, education, and interdisciplinary areas such as gender and race. CRES students have opportunities to teach first-year writing, technical writing, and sophomore literature surveys. We also offer opportunities for writing center work and writing program administration.

Programme content

The Double MA in Global Governance allows you to start the programme either at Warwick or at Waterloo. During your year at Warwick, you can follow any of our single MA programmes, taking modules in the areas that matter to you. During your time at Waterloo, you will follow the MA in Global Governance, which also offers great flexibility in module choices. All students are required to spend the equivalent of one academic term as an intern working on global governance issues in the public or private sector, at a research institute, or for a non-governmental organization. The work-term will normally take place in the third or fourth term of the program. Students receiving the CIGI Graduate Fellowship have the option of counting their internship work at CIGI over the year (which amounts to approximately 10 hours/week over three terms) as meeting the internship requirement for the program, allowing them to finish the program in three terms rather than the typical four.

The Master of Arts program offers students in a wide range of disciplines the opportunity to earn a master’s degree by writing a thesis and successfully completing a limited number of courses. The number and details of the courses are determined within the first semester of the student's program.

Students may complete their degrees in either a full- or part-time capacity. Full-time students complete a 24-month program while part-time students complete a 48-month program. Part-time students will normally complete all required course work in the first 24 months, with the subsequent months committed to continued research and production of the Thesis.

Although degrees are awarded in specific disciplines, the program is administered centrally by the School of Graduate Studies, rather than by individual departments or Faculties.

Graduate degrees traditionally have been awarded for the successful completion of a satisfactory Thesis. The Thesis route expresses the fundamental tradition of academic scholarship. It also relates to the University’s undergraduate programs, because the creation of a Thesis in any discipline calls for a range of skills which are central to the liberal education tradition, including analysis and synthesis of ideas, empirical investigations, the construction and articulation of arguments, and writing skills.

Because of the nature of the M.A. program, the Thesis forms the central requirement of the program. At the master’s level, a Thesis involves close collaboration between supervisor and student. Consequently, it is necessary for a candidate to establish contact with potential supervisors prior to application for admission. Candidates seeking potential supervisors should contact either the relevant academic department or the School of Graduate Studies.

Background

The University of Winnipeg and The University of Manitoba established four joint masters programs. The resources of both universities were thus made available for graduate work to the Masters level in these disciplines. Students enrolling in a Joint Masters Program enjoy at both universities all the rights and privileges normally accorded to graduate students; two months before their expected date of graduation they shall declare in writing the university from which they wish to receive their degree.

As part of the agreement establishing these Joint Masters Programs, it was arranged that administrative aspects, e.g. admission, registration, etc. would be entirely in the hands of the Faculty of Graduate Studies at The University of Manitoba. All prospective graduate students must complete the official application for admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba and consult with the Graduate Chair at The University of Winnipeg.

Religion

The Department of Religious Studies at The University of Winnipeg and the Department of Religion at The University of Manitoba offer a Joint Master of Arts Program. Graduates of either university who have completed a recognized pre-Master's program in Religion, or who hold a B.A.(Honours) in Religion, or have completed a program equivalent to a pre-Master's or Honours in any recognized university of college, are eligible to apply. University of Winnipeg students can also qualify for admission by completing the Bachelor of Arts (4-year) degree in Religious Studies. Applications will also be considered from B.A. (Honours) graduates in other disciplines with a strong background in Religious Studies. This programme is studied entirely in China. It is jointly delivered by the University of Leeds and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, and allows experienced Chinese TESOL professionals to gain a deeper understanding of how languages are learned and the strategies used to teach them.

You will explore current insights, issues and problems withinTESOL, and assesses the theoretical frameworks for the language learning,teaching and testing processes. You will have the opportunity to appraise the proceduresand outcomes of different approaches to pedagogy and evaluation in TESOL, andthe ability to explore how such issues and frameworks relate to your ownprofessional environment.

You’ll study four core modules exploring current theories of language acquisition, the complex context in which any language learning takes place, different approaches to and strategies for TESOL, and current theories around language assessment.

The Language Education team in the School of Education is one of the largest such teams in the UK. Members have experience of teaching, teacher education and consultancy work in TESOL, ELT, EFL, ESOL, EAL, Modern Foreign Languages, and Applied Linguistics in many contexts in the UK and around the world, and are nationally and internationally recognised as researchers.

This programme is not suitable for those without professional TESOL experience.

Course content

This programme is jointly delivered and has been designed by academic staff from both the University of Leeds and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.

All teaching and learning is influenced by the context in which it occurs. The programme begins by considering the components of an educational context, from visible features of the classroom to the less visible but influential educational norms that affect teacher and learner roles and behaviours.

You then explore current theoretical models of language acquisition, and consider the ways in which people learn, or acquire a second language. The course continues by deepening your understanding of learning and teaching integrated skills in TESOL, focusing explicitly on oral and written language processing and their implications for different teaching and learning activities. You’ll use this knowledge to design, adapt and evaluate language learning tasks, and to think carefully about methods of assessment that will be appropriate for your working context

At every stage of the course, you’ll develop your research skills and think about the relationship between research and TESOL practice. You’ll demonstrate this awareness when you complete your critical study: an intensive, small-scale, research project related to your own interests in TESOL education.

In March of the year after you successfully complete the programme, you’ll receive a MA TESOL degree from the University of Leeds at a graduation ceremony in Guangzhou.

This course is all taught face-to-face at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies with two modules each taught by tutors from each university. You’ll experience a range of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, discussions, small group tasks and presentations, and extra study support will be available online through the University of Leeds’ Virtual Learning Environment. Independent study is also an important part of this programme.

Assessment

All modules are assessed by written assignments of up to 6000 words, and you’ll be encouraged to write on topics that are directly relevant to your own professional context. The Erasmus Mundus MA in Journalism, Media and Globalisation is truly an international course.

The first year is spent in the University of Aarhus, Denmark, the second at City, University of London (where students specialise in financial and business journalism) or at the University of Swansea (Wales), Hamburg University (Germany) or University of Amsterdam (Netherlands).

The Mundus Journalism degree explores the practice and performance of journalism and the media in the context of a new environment brought about by globalisation, modernisation, commercialisation and professional developments.

The course also offers some exchange opportunities for students to travel to one of the following three institutions in the spring of the first year: University of California, Berkeley, USA; Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile; or University of Technology, Sydney, Australia. During your second year studies at City, University of London, you will gain practical skills in our state-of-the-art digital television studio, digital editing suites, radio studios, and broadcast newsrooms.

In 2014 we completed a £12m development projects for our Journalism facilities. These facilities were developed in consultation with experts from the BBC and ITN, and were praised by the BJTC. Our facilities include:
-A television studio: enabling simultaneous multi-media broadcast and a major expansion in the number of news and current affairs programmes produced.

Funding

- Pharmacists in the South West region seeking HESW funded places
In response to specific commissioning requirements from HESW, we have been working in partnership with the University of the West of England (UWE) to develop a new interprofessional Non-Medical Prescribing Programme for a range of the non-medical professions eligible to train as prescribers (including pharmacists, nurses and the allied health profession registrants of the Health and Care Professions Council). This partnership between the University of Bath and UWE is called the South West Non-Medical Prescribing Alliance (http://www1.uwe.ac.uk/whatcanistudy/professionaldevelopment/coursesbysector/health/non-medicalprescribing.aspx).

The first intake of the new interprofessional Non-Medical Prescribing Programme will be in September 2016. Students applying for HESW funded places on this Programme will enrol directly as UWE students.

To apply for a HESW funded place, candidates need to have provided details of their requirement for a place into the ‘demand forecast’ for HESW funded places. The demand forecast process is conducted by UWE. Normally information on the requirement for funded places should be collated and submitted into the demand forecast by the employing organisation, or the local CCG. However, if individuals are in doubt about how to do this (particularly those employed in the General Practice setting), they can contact Emily Haycock at UWE () for more information.

In order to be considered for a HESW funded place, there needs to be a confirmed workforce need from the training organisation (which must be a provider of NHS services/contracted to provide NHS services) for the candidate to become an independent prescriber.

There are additional entry requirements set out by the General Pharmaceutical Council that applicants must meet in order to be considered for a place on the Programme; these can be found in the application documentation. Once candidates have registered their interest for a HESW funded place on the interprofessional Non-Medical Prescribing Programme, UWE will provide them with more information on the application process directly.

- The University of Bath uni-professional Pharmacist Prescribing Programme for self-funding and organisationally-funded applicants

The University of Bath will continue to offer the Pharmacist Prescribing Programme, with workshops held at the University of Bath campus, in order to cater for self-funding candidates and organisationally-funded pharmacists outside of the HESW region (including those who wish to complete an independent prescribing course as part of the University of Bath Postgraduate Diploma).

The Oil and Gas Innovation MSc is a project-led masters programme which will equip students with the skills and competencies to generate and commercialise innovations for the oil and gas industry.

The programme is a collaboration between the Oil & Gas Innovation Centre (OGIC) and a range of Scottish Universities, including the University of Aberdeen (lead), Heriot-Watt, Strathclyde University, University of St Andrews, Glasgow Caledonian University, University of the Highlands and Islands and Robert Gordon University to develop new technologies in exploration, production and decommissioning.

The collaborative nature of this programme means that in addition to courses at Heriot-Watt's Institute of Petroleum Engineering, students will also take modules at the University of Aberdeen and the University of Strathclyde giving them the unique opportunity to benefit from the oil and gas expertise available at each of these three institutions.

Students in the Biomedical Engineering (BME) Graduate Program are interested in cutting-edge, multidisciplinary biomedical research. The BME Graduate Program enables graduate students to undertake MEng (Thesis), MSc, or PhD programs that intersect the fields of engineering, kinesiology, medicine, science and veterinary medicine.

The BME Graduate Program is jointly coordinated by the Schulich School of Engineering, Cumming School of Medicine and Faculty of Kinesiology, with additional participating faculty members from the Faculties of Science and Veterinary Medicine. The BME Graduate Program supports the University of Calgary’s Engineering Solutions for Health: Biomedical Engineering Research Strategy. By coordinating and consolidating complementary research and teaching programs across the University of Calgary and linking with health care facilities, the BME Graduate Program forms an integral part of a Canadian centre of excellence in BME graduate education and research.

The unique, multi-disciplinary, design of this program means our trainees have access to cutting edge research laboratories and equipment.

The BME Graduate Program was approved by The University of Calgary Board of Governors in 1997. Programme details

The Postgraduate Certificate in Nanotechnology begins in October and runs for nine months. Students take three online nanotechnology modules. At the end of the third module, students are required to attend a residential weekend in nanoscale materials characterisation based in Oxford. This takes place at the University of Oxford's Begbroke Science Park in July 2017.

The content of each module contains up-to-the-minute thinking and reflects the University of Oxford's world-leading research in nanotechnology. Each module has a different focus:

- Module 1: The Wider Context of Nanotechnology (24 October - 4 December 2016) looks at the current state of the technology and addresses its implications;

- Module 2: The Fundamental Science of Nanotechnology (9 January - 18 March 2017) explains the physical and mathematical foundations of nanoscale phenomena and properties of nanoscale materials;

- Module 3: Fundamental Characterisation for Nanotechnology (24 April - 2 July 2017) explores methods for investigating nanoparticles, thin films and nanostructures.

Each module lasts for 7 or 10 weeks corresponding approximately to the University of Oxford's term calendar. Within each module, there are weekly live online tutorials lasting for one hour as well as assignments and problem sheets. Most students should expect to spend an average of between 10 and 15 hours per week on independent study in addition to the timetabled tutorials.

Course aims

By the end of the Postgraduate Certificate students will be expected to:

- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the physical principles, mathematical methods and techniques appropriate for solving nanotechnology problems and be able to apply them to industrial problems through a critical comprehension of the relative advantages and disadvantages of these methods;

- Demonstrate an understanding of some of the most common applications of nanoscale phenomena and how these relate to the solution of nanotechnology problems in industry;

- Manage their learning and research and conduct independent and effective study;

- Apply skills gained in analytical techniques from across the physical sciences.
