This MSc focuses on the problems of over- and under-nutrition, which apply to most developed nations as well as those undergoing rapid transformation. The programme offers specialised training in the clinical and scientific basis of malnutrition and obesity, and therapeutic approaches to correcting this in the hospital, community and educational setting.

About this degree

The programme focuses on periods of the lifecycle when nutrition is particularly important; these include: acute illness, trauma, surgery or malignancy; and chronic conditions in which disease, nutrition and treatment interact. The aetiology, pathophysiology and epidemiology of obesity will be explored alongside all approaches currently being used in its treatment.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

This MSc is particularly suitable for candidates who wish to pursue a lifelong career in the field of cutting-edge translational research and the practice of nutrition therapy in the health services of the UK and other countries, or in the clinical nutrition industry. Children's nurses care for children and young people from birth to 18 years old in hospital and in the community. Children and young people can present with a range of conditions, from birth defects, accidents and injuries, to life-limiting or critical illnesses or which can result in the death of a child. Children's nurses work in partnership with the child/young person, their parents and carers, involving them in the planning and delivery of their child's care and treatment. Children's nurses, in collaboration with other professionals, strive to promote health in children and young people to ensure they enter into adulthood in good health.

This innovative and intensive two-year course aimed at students with an existing degree (2:2 or above) will equip you with the knowledge and skills to assess and manage the nursing care needs of children and families, including those with acute and long-term conditions. The course will also develop your abilities to consider the wider aspects influencing children's health needs, preparing you for future leadership in a changing and challenging health care system.

You'll experience a variety of clinical settings such as NHS acute Trusts, community placements, independent sector and voluntary sector organisations. You'll also have a placement within a community healthcare setting.

Practice experience is gained in several world-renowned central and outer London hospitals including:

Time spent on placement
During the course you will spend 50% of your time involved in academic study and 50% in clinical practice within a broad variety of healthcare settings. Although sometimes initially challenging, practice learning is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of learning to be a nurse.

Structure of placements
Placements are spread over the two years:

Your initial placements are designed to introduce you to working in a professional setting and to develop essential care and basic assessment skills, infection control and learn about safeguarding vulnerable people.

You will then build on the experience gained from Year one and will begin to take on more responsibility, progressing your clinical reasoning skills and begin to look after small groups of patients making confident, proactive decisions for their health and management with less supervision.

You will also have the opportunity to choose a four week elective placement in which you can pick a speciality (e.g. working with Clinical Nurse Specialists, specialist services or independent and 3rd sector providers), or a different context of care (e.g. prison, private health care facility, social care, charity, hospice etc.), or a lived experience of a certain condition (e.g. charity work, carer shadowing, etc.) During your final year, you will require less supervision and will be responsible for a small group of patients.

Whilst in the clinical placement we ensure our nursing students receive continuous support and guidance from a dedicated mentor and practice learning teams made up of lecturers and practitioners.

Facilities

Children's skills laboratories
We have two Children's skills laboratories which are set up like nursing wards. The skills labs are used by all student nurses throughout their on-campus study time at LSBU. They learn manual handling of patients, basic life support skills and skills specific to the field of nursing.

SimMan
The nursing wards have simulator mannequins; SimMan, SimBaby and SimMom. These life-size mannequins are computer controlled and can be programmed with various clinical conditions. These are operated by a computer in real-time and so respond to a students' actions. They also allow students to see the outcome of specific interventions in certain scenarios, which could make the patient better or deteriorate quite quickly.

The mannequins are used to teach students how to recognise clinical signs, and to also associate those clinical signs with the actions they are taking to care for the patient. SimMan can be male or female with fully accurate anatomy and can breathe, blink, sweat, speak and groan in pain as well as have a pulse.

Children's nurses work in a child-centred and multi-professional team, which is reflected in the variety of people who contribute to the course. Expert speakers include service users, such as parents and charitable organisations, expert practitioners and other lead professionals in child health and children's nursing.

Career progression

All graduates are offered the opportunity to apply for employment with the NHS Trusts and hospitals where they gained experience during training when posts are available. The course has an excellent record in graduate employment, including working overseas, and covering a range of qualified nurse positions.

Successful graduates of the PgDip can top-up to an MSc in one year and will be qualified to study a range of further specialist postgraduate pathways. With additional experience, advanced practice is available at masters level with the potential to progress to doctorate studies. Objectives

The Postgraduate Diploma in Adult Nursing prepares you for a fulfilling and rewarding career caring for adults of all ages who have had injuries, suffered accidents, acquired disease or have a range of healthcare needs.

Adult nursing is a challenging and fulfilling profession; as an adult nurse you need to be committed and dedicated with the willingness to give time to others with care and compassion. Clinical Practice Assessment – Pass/Fail

Modules

This course is based on the theory of relationship-centred care and the psychological, social and biological factors influencing health. These themes are explored in the context of acute and long-term care and later in the course there is an emphasis on leading and managing in professional practice.

The course has three parts with two progression points which must be successfully completed in order to progress to the next part. The modular structure of the programme is developmental and students study at HE level 7 throughout the programme with students expected to demonstrate increasing levels of self-directed independent study as the programme progresses.

Student independent learning time varies during the programme and is focused more in the theory modules and averages between 30-50 hours a week.

All modules are compulsory.

Career prospects are excellent with Postgraduate Diploma students securing employment as Band 5 Staff Nurses with Trusts including Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and University College London Hospital's NHS Foundation Trust.

GID is a multidisciplinary, multicultural and multinational design programme awarding both an MA from the Royal College of Art and an MSc from Imperial College London to graduates. The programme draws together theory, research and therapeutic thinking from a range of perspectives, including clinical and cognitive psychology, systemic thinking, psychoanalysis and neuroscience. In a workshop setting, students develop competencies in engagement, assessment and evaluation, and practical skills necessary for therapeutic work with children and families. These are then put into practice during the clinical placement.

This two-year MSc has a total value of 270 credits. Each year students complete modules to the value of 135 credits.

Dissertation/research project

All MSc students undertake a research portfolio which may include both a developmental and a clinical focus, such as the evaluation and understanding of clinical and therapeutic services for children and young people. This culminates in a dissertation made up of an 8,000-word journal paper and a poster.

Teaching and learning

In year one students attend weekly lectures complemented by small group seminars. Modules focusing on clinical skills are classroom based. In year two, as well as taking further modules, students move into a 2-3 days per week placement in a child and adolescent mental health (CAMHS) setting, supervised by an experienced clinician. Assessment is by a mixture of coursework, examinations and the dissertation.

Since the MSc was established in 2011 graduates have gone on to work with children and families in various therapeutic settings, or to undertake further doctoral-level clinical training, such as clinical psychology, child psychotherapy, or counselling psychology. The programme will provide tools for interrogating musical and educational assumptions, values and practices. It will help students to expand their understanding of effective music teaching, evaluation and assessment across the lifespan.

Undertaking the Music Education MA programme will allow students to develop their critical thinking and ability to interrogate current educational research, literature and practice in the overarching fields of music and music education. They will also have the opportunity to pursue specialist lines of enquiry that are related to their own professional and/or academic interests, working alongside prominent academics in the field.

The main mode of delivery is through a combination of weekly lectures and seminars.

There are ten-week lecture courses for the two core modules, and also for Critical Studies in Music Pedagogy and Practice (optional module), with sessions held in the evenings at the UCL Institute of Education. However, the Choral Conducting Leadership and Communication optional module takes place over five full days at the UCL Institute, as well as through additional student-led sessions. Students are also required to engage actively with UCL's online learning environments across the programme. The Music Technology in Education optional module is delivered online. All students are entitled to face-to-face tutorials with their allocated tutors. 

Assessment is predominantly through a written assignment for each taught module.

The programme combines psychoanalytic theory of development and inter-family relationships with a year-long observation of infants in a family setting, and a research project.

About this degree

Students develop a theoretical grounding in psychoanalysis as related to child development and clinical practice. Observations of parents and children allow students to witness some of these theoretical constructs in real world contexts and help students develop the observational skills essential in clinical work. The Master of Laws (LLM) programme provides an ideal opportunity for students to acquire or develop their expertise in specialist legal subject areas informed by world-class, research-led teaching. An LLM is an ideal way to advance a career in law.

About this degree

Students are equipped with advanced academic legal skills and knowledge which can be applied in further study or careers in legal practice, public service or industry. They develop a knowledge and understanding of law in its context, the skills necessary for analysis of complex legal issues, and research expertise.

Students complete 180 credits (120 credits of taught modules and a 60-credit dissertation).

Full-time students complete all 180 credits in 12 months. Part-time students spread their credits over 2 years, or with flexible study, over 3-5 years.

In addition to Laws module options, students may select up to 30 credits of taught Master's modules from another UCL department, providing the modules form part of a coherent programme of study for the award of Master of Laws (LLM) and registration is approved by the relevant department.

Independent Research Essay

All students undertake a 12,000-word independent research essay (60 credits) on a self-selected topic of law.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, research exercises and guided self-study and research. Each module is supported by a dedicated webpage containing a syllabus, learning materials, reading lists and assessment information. Taught module assessment may be through unseen examinations, coursework essays, oral presentations or a combination of assessment formats, usually undertaken in term three. The 12,000 word independent research essay is submitted at the end of the programme.

Careers

Most graduates pursue a career in the legal profession. On completing the LLM some students choose to pursue a professional qualification in order to qualify as a solicitor or barrister. Our graduates go on to work in a wide range of areas, including for human rights organistations and corporate law firms, whilst others choose to remain in academia as researchers or lecturers.

About the course

Statistics is the study of the collection, analysis, interpretation, presentation and organisation of data. Statistical analysis and data analytics is listed as one of the highly desirable skills employers are looking for, and with data becoming an ever increasing part of modern life, the talent to extract information and value from complex data is scarce.

The new Statistics and Data Analytics MSc is designed to train the next generation of statisticians with a focus on the field of data analytics. Employers expect skills in both statistics and computing. This master’s programme will provide a unique and coherent blend of modern statistical methods together with the associated computational skills that are essential for handling large quantities of unstructured data. This programme offers training in modern statistical methodology, computational statistics and data analysis from a wide variety of fields, including financial and health sectors.

Aims

Statistics is the study of the collection, analysis, interpretation, presentation, and organization of data. The aim of the MSc Statistics and Data Analytics is to produce graduates that:

- Are equipped with a range of advanced statistical methods and the associated computational skills for handling large quantities of unstructured data
- Have developed a critical awareness of the underlying needs of industry and commerce through relevant case studies
- Are able to analyse real-world data and to communicate the output of sophisticated statistical models in order to inform decision making processes
- Have the necessary computational skills to build and analyse simple/appropriate solutions using statistical Big Data technologies

Statistics with Data Analytics Dissertation
Towards the end of the Spring Term, students will choose a topic for an individual research project, which will lead to the preparation and submission of an MSc dissertation. The project supervisor will usually be a member of the Brunel Statistics or Financial Mathematics group. In some cases the project may be overseen by an external supervisor based in industry or another academic institution..

Teaching

You’ll be taught using a range of teaching methods, including lectures, computer labs and discussion groups. Lectures are supplemented by computer labs and seminars/exercise classes and small group discussions. The seminars will be useful for you to carry out numerical data analysis, raise questions arising from the lectures, exercise sheets, or self-studies in an interactive environment.

The first term provides a thorough grounding in core programming, statistical and data analysis skills. In addition to acquiring relevant statistical and computational methods, students are encouraged to engage with real commercial and/or industrial problems through a series of inspiring case studies delivered by guest speakers. Support for academic and personal growth is provided through a range of workshops covering topics such as data protection, critical thinking, presentation skills and technical writing skills.

You’ll also complete an individual student project supervised by a relevant academic on your chosen topic.

Assessment

The assessment of all learning outcomes is achieved by a balance of coursework and examinations. Assessments range from written reports/essays, group work, presentations through to conceptual/statistical modelling and programming exercises, according to the demands of particular modular blocks. Additionally, class tests are used to assess a range of knowledge, including a range of specific technical subjects.

The Clinical Paediatric Neuropsychology MSc is currently the only paediatric programme in the UK that is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and students who successfully complete the programme are deemed to have completed the academic components of the BPS professional Qualification in Clinical Paediatric Neuropsychology (QiCN).

About this degree

Students of clinical paediatric neuropsychology develop an understanding of the techniques, methods and contemporary findings in the field. They are trained to interpret clinical case presentations within the context of current scientific findings of developmental brain-behaviour relationships and gain knowledge of the major professional, ethical and service delivery issues in assessment and rehabilitative work.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and a research project (60 credits).

A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, full time nine months and part-time two years) is offered.

Dissertation/report

All MSc students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a substantial report and an oral presentation.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, group seminars, video demonstrations and directed self-study time (reading, essay writing, seminar preparations). Assessment is by two essay journal papers of up to 3,000 words each, two commentary papers of up to 1,500 words each and four 90-minute unseen examinations, and the dissertation examined by viva-voce.

The British Psychological Society (BPS) views the QiCN as the 'gold standard' for practitioners in clinical neuropsychology.

The third dimension, practice, is examined by the BPS. Universities do not currently offer organisation or supervision of the practice dimension in neuropsychology.

This programme covers all key areas of the syllabus recommended by the BPS Division of Neuropsychology and draws on the wealth of specialist expertise in neuropsychology within Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (UCL GOS ICH) and other related neuroscience and psychology departments within UCL. We also invite many external speakers who are international experts within their area of specialism.

UCL GOS ICH has a very close relationship with the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and much of its research and teaching is carried out on a joint basis.
