At the graduate level, the Chemistry Department features a research-based Master of Science degree. After completion of core coursework in the major sub-disciplines, students in the Chemistry M.S. program have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of research experiences, including environmental, organic synthesis, natural product isolation, computational and theoretical, analytical, nanomaterials, catalysis, polymers, biochemistry, and chemical education. The research experience is considerably enhanced by MTSU’s new 250,000-square-foot science building and upgraded instrumentation. Talented undergraduates also have the opportunity to participate in a new Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s (ABM) program which enables them to complete a bachelor’s and master’s degree in five years. Graduates find employment in a wide range of areas as well as continuing their education in high-quality doctoral and/or professional programs. The department also participates in three interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs (Molecular Biosciences, Computational Science, and Math and Science Education).


Jobs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics are projected to grow 13 percent by 2022. Chemistry graduates with advanced degrees will particularly find better job opportunities with pharmaceutical and biotech companies. MTSU's state-of-the-art science building offers both large and small lab spaces so faculty can pursue research projects with both graduate and undergraduate students. Graduate students in our Department not only have the opportunity to learn in an engaging environment but also to teach in one as well. Beginning in their first (for PhD candidates) and second (for MA candidates) years, they gain valuable classroom experience in composition classes, literature surveys, and courses they design themselves. Our program's scholarly and pedagogical preparation, as well as our detailed attention to professional placement, has enabled students to develop careers as teachers, scholars, publishers and editors.

Hudson Strode Program in Renaissance Studies

"Bringing the Globe to Alabama"

The Strode Program is a privately endowed program to promote the study of English literature from Skelton to Milton. The endowment provides for lectures and residencies by distinguished scholars and fellowships for graduate study at the University of Alabama in the field of English Renaissance Literature.

Hudson Strode served on the University of Alabama faculty from 1916 to 1963. He was a prolific author and celebrated teacher of Shakespeare and of creative writing. The Strode program was endowed by Professor Strode and his wife, Thérèse.

Focus: The Graduate Student

The intellectual work and educational activities sponsored by the Strode Program, from fellowships to lecture series, from the Strode Seminar to summer research awards, converge upon a single focus: the graduate student. We have a lively and talented group of students specializing in English Renaissance literature in preparation for careers in colleges and universities, or for other professional or personal goals. The faculty is committed not only to teaching students but also to mentoring them, fostering a community of future scholars.

Our students have won departmental and college awards for teaching and they have won university-wide fellowships for dissertation research. A recent Ph.D. received the College of Arts and Sciences annual award for best dissertation. Topics treated in the dissertations produced by our students are diverse—from readings of Spenser which deploy the theories of Derrida and Lacan to studies of the representation of female sexuality which draw upon seventeenth-century London court records; from adaptations of Shakespeare for teen films to performance criticism of regional and university theatrical productions. Essays written by our students—on Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy, on the agency of the letter in Hamlet, on class conflict in Coriolanus, on Leo Africanus and early modern imperialism, and on queer kinship in The Merchant of Venice—have appeared in Early Modern Literary Studies, English Literary History, English Literary Renaissance, Studies in English Literature, and Shakespeare, among other journals and essay collections.

We have an excellent record of placing Ph.D.s in tenure-track professorships. In the past ten years, 100% of our Ph.D. graduates who went on the academic job market eventually landed tenure-track jobs. Recent graduates have joined the faculty at Cornell College, High Point University, Mercer University, Stephen F. Austin State University, Xavier University, and Youngstown State University. M.A. students have matriculated to Ph.D. programs at Emory, Northwestern, Rutgers, University of California, University of Georgia, University of Oxford, University of Tennessee, and University of Washington, to name a few. Other M.A. students have gone on to law school, library school, the Peace Corps, high school teaching, or other opportunities.

Composition and Rhetoric

The graduate curriculum in CRES (Composition, Rhetoric, and English Studies) provides a solid foundation in English studies with a particular focus on the teaching of writing and studies in language, literacy, and rhetoric. The doctoral program is designed for those seeking academic positions as composition specialists (researchers, teachers, or administrators) in postsecondary English departments that emphasize writing instruction. The MA program is ideal for those who wish to do community college teaching or administrative work, and for students wishing to continue on to the PhD.

The graduate curriculum provides core courses in composition-rhetoric as well as elective opportunities in literature, linguistics, communication studies, education, and interdisciplinary areas such as gender and race. CRES students have opportunities to teach first-year writing, technical writing, and sophomore literature surveys. We also offer opportunities for writing center work and writing program administration.

The Biology Department’s Master of Science program emphasizes research and preparation for further graduate study as well as employment with public agencies and private businesses. A major strength of the program is the option to custom-tailor the overall curriculum to meet the needs and objectives of individual students. Students may pursue a general biology curriculum or may choose to focus their studies in one or more of the following specialization areas: botany, cell and molecular biology, ecology, genetics, microbiology, physiology, or zoology. Students also have the opportunity to study in a state-of-the-art facility with the Fall 2014 opening of the innovative $147 million science building comprising more than 250,000 square feet for teaching, research, and collaborative learning. The Biology master’s requires a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate credit and six hours of research tools or foreign language. The degree also includes written oral comprehensive exams and a research thesis. Program completion typically requires two to three years.

Pursue the M.A. and/or the Ph.D. in English with a nationally and internationally recognized faculty, whose members have published more than 90 books. The lively, dynamic program looks at texts ranging from Beowulf to Virginia Woolf and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Study in both traditional fields (medieval literature, the Renaissance, American lit, rhetoric and composition, linguistics) and new interdisciplinary areas (popular culture, film studies, Anglophone lit, folklore, children's and adolescent literature). Students are encouraged to think and create freely within a structure that provides support from peers, guidance from faculty, resources for research, challenging goals, and rigorous standards. The relatively small size of graduate seminars allows for highly individualized attention to students. Assistantships are available, as well as awards, fellowships, and other financial support.


The Department of English offers the Master of Arts (M.A.), the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), and a minor at the graduate level. Both degree programs provide students with opportunities to integrate advanced training in traditional and emerging areas of English studies with teaching experience and pedagogical training.

The English M.A. degree, one of the oldest in the state, is a non-specialized program that offers advanced studies in American and British literature, popular culture and film, the English language, rhetoric and composition, and linguistics. Thesis and non-thesis options are offered.

The Ph.D. program allows for specialization in a number of areas, including American Literature; Anglophone Literature; British Literature; Children's and Young Adult Literature; Folklore; Linguistics; Literary Theory; Popular Culture and Film; and Rhetoric, Composition, and Pedagogy.

Admissions decisions for both programs are based on the department’s judgment of the applicant’s capacity, suitability, and preparation for graduate study.

Master’s or doctoral applicants should have completed at least 30 semester hours of English at the undergraduate level. Ph.D. candidates without an M.A. will be expected to have completed at least 20 hours of graduate coursework in English.

A foreign language requirement must be met for graduation for both advanced degrees.

The Oil and Gas Innovation MSc is a project-led masters programme which will equip students with the skills and competencies to generate and commercialise innovations for the oil and gas industry.

The programme is a collaboration between the Oil & Gas Innovation Centre (OGIC) and a range of Scottish Universities, including the University of Aberdeen (lead), Heriot-Watt, Strathclyde University, University of St Andrews, Glasgow Caledonian University, University of the Highlands and Islands and Robert Gordon University to develop new technologies in exploration, production and decommissioning.

The collaborative nature of this programme means that in addition to courses at Heriot-Watt's Institute of Petroleum Engineering, students will also take modules at the University of Aberdeen and the University of Strathclyde giving them the unique opportunity to benefit from the oil and gas expertise available at each of these three institutions.

The Oil and Gas Innovation MSc by Research is aimed at:

• Technical staff who have identified an innovation or have expertise likely to yield innovative solutions and want to learn how to commercialise these.

The Master of Arts program offers students in a wide range of disciplines the opportunity to earn a master’s degree by writing a thesis and successfully completing a limited number of courses. The number and details of the courses are determined within the first semester of the student's program.

Students may complete their degrees in either a full- or part-time capacity. Full-time students complete a 24-month program while part-time students complete a 48-month program. Part-time students will normally complete all required course work in the first 24 months, with the subsequent months committed to continued research and production of the Thesis.

Although degrees are awarded in specific disciplines, the program is administered centrally by the School of Graduate Studies, rather than by individual departments or Faculties.

Graduate degrees traditionally have been awarded for the successful completion of a satisfactory Thesis. The Thesis route expresses the fundamental tradition of academic scholarship. It also relates to the University’s undergraduate programs, because the creation of a Thesis in any discipline calls for a range of skills which are central to the liberal education tradition, including analysis and synthesis of ideas, empirical investigations, the construction and articulation of arguments, and writing skills.

Because of the nature of the M.A. program, the Thesis forms the central requirement of the program. At the master’s level, a Thesis involves close collaboration between supervisor and student. Consequently, it is necessary for a candidate to establish contact with potential supervisors prior to application for admission. Candidates seeking potential supervisors should contact either the relevant academic department or the School of Graduate Studies.

Master of Transportation Systems, SEU-Monash Joint degree

Transportation professionals require a range of advanced skills with a global perspective to develop more sustainable transport systems. To gain this technical and planning expertise in transportation systems, Southeast University and Monash University have established a joint Master’s program in Transportation Systems. This joint Master’s program is undertaken over two years and students graduate with two Master’s degrees; one from Southeast University and one from Monash University.

This first year of the program comprises two semesters of coursework units delivered in English. Units are taught at the Southeast University and Monash University Joint Graduate School in Suzhou, China. The Joint Graduate School in Suzhou is located in the newly developed Suzhou Dushu Lake Higher Education Town that is a part of the Science and Education Innovation District of Suzhou. This area has a number of Universities and Research Institutes as well as recreation and cultural facilities.

In Semester 1, students are required to take six units taught by Southeast University consisting of three core units and three elective units:

Core Units, Semester 1 (by SEU):

- Highway Design Theory and Methods
- Road Traffic Safety

Elective Units, Semester 1 (by SEU):

The second year of the program consists of students undertaking a research project supervised by academics from Southeast University as well as a mentor from industrial institutes in the Suzhou area. A research thesis is required for each student.

ITS (Monash) has a long and proud history in Monash University and Australia. The transport group at Monash was established in 1969. The Institute of Transport Studies was established in 1995 as the Key National Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Research in Transport Management, recognised by the Australian Government (a joint venture between The University of Sydney and Monash University). For more than four decades the transport group has played a crucial role in the transport field through fundamental, applied and industry-relevant research and education. What you will study

This part-time course centres around spending 15 Wednesdays in university, starting in February. The days in university are varied and include lectures, discussions, practical activities and where appropriate informal tutorials.In addition, you will complete 10 days or equivalent working in schools, in either a voluntarily or paid position.

The course serves to deliver the necessary components for teachers who have been out of teaching for five years or more, to be able to apply to the GTCW to return to the profession. Without some training of this kind teachers who have been out of the profession for this length of time are not able to return. Therefore an already popular course is becoming even more so.

The course covers all National Curriculum subjects in the context of the classroom and will include an emphasis on the Foundation Phase in Wales and its seven areas of learning. Issues of assessment, management and resourcing are discussed as an integral part of these studies, and the course provides an opportunity to explore recent and relevant changes and innovations. It is structured to provide plenty of practical experience supported by the relevant theory.

In addition to attending lectures and placement, you will benefit from professional guidance and support on making job applications, writing a curriculum vitae and interview techniques.

Work and Study Placements

You will complete 10 days or equivalent working in schools, in either a voluntarily or paid position, in addition to the 15 days in university. The classroom experience is undertaken as an opportunity to develop confidence, skills and understanding.

This part of the programme must be arranged by you and may be tailored to suit individual requirements. To complete the course successfully a pass in the assignment is required. The assignment is a reflective log based upon the ten days in school.

Learning and teaching methods

The University Certificate Returning and Supply Teachers course runs one day a week, currently on a Wednesday, for fifteen weeks beginning in February. Each session covers a National Curriculum subject of learning or another important theme.

The days are varied and involve a range of teaching and learning strategies including lectures, discussions, workshops, practical activities, directed and independent learning, and where appropriate informal tutorials.

Assessment methods

Assessment is 100% coursework and includes one assignment, which involves the recording of a reflective school diary based on the ten days spent in the primary school of your choice, in order to obtain maximum advantage from the classroom experience.

Employment Prospects

This course enables those teachers who have lost contact with current practice to return to the classroom. In addition, many teachers who originally qualified as secondary school teachers have found the course helpful in obtaining work in the primary sector, and currently employed supply teachers have been able to secure permanent posts.

Course content

In year one you’ll explore successful enterprise and entrepreneurship and their role in society worldwide. You’ll explore how enterprise is seen around the world, and how different geographical and economic contexts create challenges for new ventures.

You’ll consider contemporary challenges and debates during guest lectures with successful entrepreneurs, hearing first-hand about their experience of the latest topics. You’ll also have the opportunity to apply what you have learned to your own business idea or an existing business, whilst drawing on their expertise.

In year two, you’ll take an in-depth look at social enterprises and alternative business models, including how best to grow an existing small business.

You’ll also work alongside our full-time students on a consultancy project for a local small-medium enterprise, building relationships with the founders and staff (you can read a student case study about a recent project). Some examples of recent projects include: ‘helping an ethical gifts retailer turn their sales performance around’; ‘undertaking a market and brand analysis for a luxury camping business’ and ‘researching the Jordanian and Indian market for a healthcare software company’.

You’ll be introduced to research methods, developing understanding of how to gain important market insights and analyse the viability of a business idea.

In the final semester of year two, you’ll complete the Enterprise Dissertation, an individual project that can be used to explore opportunities for your own business venture, develop a plan for growth in an existing business you are connected to, or to research in-depth an area of interest.

Part-time study

This part-time course enables existing entrepreneurs to continue to develop their business, whilst professionals and budding entrepreneurs can work alongside their studies. Combining work and study can often be to your advantage, since the experiences gained in your professional life will add depth and relevance.

You’ll study over two years, attending classes for one day per week from late September to early May with one-month breaks at Christmas and Easter. In year one, you'll also study for five days across June and July. In year two, you’ll attend meetings with your dissertation supervisor from April to September. You can expect to attend for approximately 27 days in year one and 17 days in year two (plus dissertation meetings).

This initial teacher training course covers the knowledge and skills that are required for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with training led by your host school supported by the University of Sunderland.

Course overview

PGCE School Direct is a unique school led route that provides exciting opportunities for you to train though work based learning, as a teacher, in a school. There are two routes available within School Direct:
Salaried Route
The salaried route is available to those candidates who have three or more years experience in schools and settings. Trainees apply direct to the school for a salaried position and are trained by the school in partnership with the University. You may also be eligible for a salaried route if you are a ‘career changer’ with transferrable skills.

Tuition Fee Route
This route is designed for trainees who prefer an apprenticeship approach to training. Trainees apply direct to the school via UCAS Sunderland codes and are trained by the school in partnership with the University.

How to Apply
In order to apply you should choose the school, or group of schools, in which you train and apply to them against the relevant University of Sunderland code. School Direct is run as a partnership between a Lead School, other schools in their Alliance and the University of Sunderland as the accredited teacher training provider.

Course content

Your training will blend academic study provided by the University of Sunderland with hands-on placements organised by the school that employs you.

PGCE Secondary Course content:

School Direct Trainees will receive academic input during University return days timetabled throughout the year.

All University Modules are designed to support Trainees in developing their knowledge and confidence in teaching. University input is delivered by both expert Tutors and excellent Practitioners from Partnership Schools, in a wide variety of ways including, lectures, tutorials and practical workshops as well as online discussions.

All aspects of the Programme are designed to enable you to meet and demonstrate the National College for Teaching (NCTL) and Leadership Standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Students will compile evidence against the Standards throughout the Programme in their online e-Portfolio.

The PGCE Primary School Direct Tutor Team is committed to providing the best experiences for our Trainees. Our Personal Tutor system ensures all Trainees are allocated an individual Tutor and are nurtured and developed both academically and professionally throughout the Programme.

Assessment is continuous throughout the course. Subject knowledge is monitored through the use of subject audits which enable students to identify their strengths and areas of development and to then action plan with Subject Specialist Tutors support to increase their knowledge and confidence in identified areas.

Modules are assessed through a variety of assessment methods including, Assignments, Portfolio and Practice Based Tasks.

Assessed Placements are assessed by Partnership schools/settings in liaison with the University.

Manchester Metropolitan University has a national reputation for initial teacher education which has been established over 100 years. Our Department of Primary Teacher Education has a team of over 40 primary teaching staff who between them have expertise in all primary curriculum subjects, enabling us to offer a wide range of specialisms. The majority of teaching staff are actively involved in research, linked to our Education and Social Research Institute, one of the leading UK centres for educational research. We have an Initial Teacher Education Partnership with over 500 primary schools and strong community links across the North West region, ensuring we can offer our trainees a diverse range of placement experiences.

Our aim is to train confident teachers and reflective practitioners who will have strong prospects for employment and career progression. Trainees have access to Manchester Met's dedicated Careers and Employability Service and within the PGCE programme are supported in securing their first teaching appointment.

After graduation we continue to provide support and advice to our Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs), including online resources, conferences and peer networking.

Our full-time PGCE Primary Education provides intensive training leading to Qualified Teacher Status ('QTS') for early years establishments and primary schools in the 3-7, 7-11 or 5-11 age range.

School-based training is combined with taught sessions at university and independent study. Applicants can choose our University-led ('Core') PGCE training route, or one of our School-led ('School Direct') routes, both of which lead to QTS. We work in partnership with 18 school alliances in the North West of England to offer School Direct places (salaried and non-salaried).

University-led ('Core') route

Trainees typically spend around 12 weeks in university during the year, including a block at the start of the course, combined with at least 120 days of school-based training, in at least two different schools. Manchester Met organises placements.

School-led ('School Direct') route

Trainees are attached to a lead school within an alliance of schools - Manchester Met works in partnership with 18 school alliances across the North West region. Depending on the term times of the school(s) involved they will typically spend around 30 weeks in school and around four weeks in university for taught sessions. Placements are organised by the lead school.

On both routes trainees will experience school-based training in at least two different schools, and have the opportunity to undertake an inclusion placement with a focus on Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND). The School-led also includes a visit to a Key Stage 3 setting. Throughout the PGCE trainees are supported by a personal tutor, experienced teaching staff and mentors in university and at school.

Candidates can apply for both School Direct and University PGCE routes; both have the same entry requirements. Successful completion of either route includes 60 Masters level credits.

Early Years route (Manchester only)

This route mirrors the PGCE Primary Education programme, with an Early Years focus. Completing this course will enable practitioners to teach in both the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.

Applications for PGCE routes starting in September 2017 should be made online via UCAS Teacher Training which is expected to open in late October this year. Early application is recommended as places are limited. Please check our entry requirements before applying.

Assessment Only Route to QTS in Primary sector

Experienced, but unqualified graduate teachers, wishing to complete a formal qualification to gain Qualified Teacher Status may be eligible for this route. It will suit those who have taught in at least two schools or colleges, and who have substantial experience in two consecutive age ranges. It is not sufficient for candidates only to have experience of two schools.

Important information

Manchester Metropolitan University has been undertaking a review of the long-term future of academic provision at its Cheshire campus. It has now been confirmed that the University will withdraw from the Cheshire campus. This means that we expect the campus to close in the summer of 2019.

As the withdrawal from the campus will be a phased process we are still pleased to receive applications for one year full time postgraduate taught courses starting in 2017 on the Cheshire campus. We also continue to welcome applications for part time postgraduate courses of two years in duration in the Exercise and Sport Science department starting in 2017. Applications for courses that are expected to take longer than two years to complete are currently on hold.

Placement options

Manchester Met organises placements for trainees on our University-led ('Core') PGCE route through our extensive Initial Teacher Education Partnership. Our Partnership vision is to train 'outstanding, critically-literate professional teachers who will challenge and inspire their learners'.

The schools we work with share our commitment to aspiration and excellence, with a focus on strong mentor training and support for trainees. There is also an emphasis on national priorities, including behaviour management, literacy and numeracy.

Our partner schools cover a wide geographical area and diversity of social, economic and cultural backgrounds, ranging across inner city, suburban and rural settings, enabling us to offer our trainees a broad range of placement opportunities.

We organise placements starting with the trainee's term-time postcode and matching this with placement offers from schools. Trainees are expected to travel up to 90 minutes each way from where they live and to arrive in school 45 minutes before the school day commences. We take into consideration special circumstances, such as disabilities, cultural requirements and medical conditions. In addition, we match carefully to ensure a breadth of experience across different key stages.

Trainees spend at least 120 days on contrasting placements in two schools related to the two age phases of their particular route through the course, with time spent in each key stage/phase. They are attached to each school for a substantial period of time and expected to engage in the full life of the school.

In their first placement trainees gain experience across the full age range of the school and teach in one class for an extended period, taking increased responsibility for that class.

They then begin to teach a range of curriculum areas, as well as gaining an understanding of cross-curricular themes.
The second placement focuses on the whole curriculum and extended management of the classroom in order to meet the requirements for the Teachers' Standards.

Trainees are required to pass both periods of school-based training.

School Direct trainees will undertake teaching practice at their lead school and other schools within the alliance. Placements are organised by the lead school.

All trainees are supported in various ways whilst on placement:
-Every trainee has a personal tutor - this is the tutor who knows the trainee best at university and will usually teach them for some aspects of their studies. Personal tutors write trainee references for employment. For School-led routes the school writes a reference.
-Every trainee is allocated a visiting tutor whilst on placement. This tutor supports the school when assessing the trainee's progress and do do this observes each trainee teaching.
-Every trainee has a school mentor, this may be their class teacher or someone in the school who oversees placements
-Often there are multiple trainees on placement in each school, providing an inbuilt support network

The MSc programme draws on knowledge and skills acquired in many years of providing specialist classes in local history, and profits from close links with local, social and economic historians elsewhere in the University. The programme is overseen by the University’s Continuing Education Board, and admission is through the Department for Continuing Education. All graduate students must apply also for membership of a college. Most choose to become members of Kellogg College, which caters particularly for part-time mature students and which is closely associated with the Department.

The Critchley Scholarship for 2015 entry:

Teaching and supervision on the MSc programme is provided by the Department’s University Lecturer, Dr Mark Smith, and specialist tutors from the Department and elsewhere in Oxford and further afield. An impression of the interests represented in the Department’s teaching and research supervision can be gained from the Advanced Papers currently offered as part of the Master’s course: Power and patronage in the later medieval localities; Kinship, culture and community: Provincial elites in early modern England; Poverty and the Poor Law in England, 1660-1800; Enclosure and rural change, 1750-1850; Religion and community in England, 1830-1914; The social history of English architecture, 1870-1940; the English suburb, 1800-1939.

The Department’s graduate students are members of the Continuing Education Graduate School and have access to the full range of Oxford University’s library, archive and computing facilities.

The course is designed to combine a systematic training in historical research techniques with the study of a range of major local historical themes and the chance to undertake an individually researched dissertation. It will be relevant to potential or practising teachers, archaeologists, environmental planners, archivists, librarians, museum professionals and teachers in adult education, and indeed anyone wishing to pursue the subject for its own sake.

IT skills

Please note that most Departmental courses require assignments to be submitted online, and although the online submission system is straightforward and has step by step instructions, it does assume students have access to a PC and a sufficient level of computing experience and skill to upload their assignments. Applicants should be familiar with the use of computers for purposes such as word-processing, using e-mail and searching the Internet.

College Affiliation

It is a requirement of Oxford University that Master of Science students are matriculated members of the University and one of its colleges. Masters students based in the Department for Continuing Education are encouraged to apply to become members of Kellogg College. In previous intakes almost all students on this course have chosen to join Kellogg. Continuing education and life-long learning in Oxford have been formally linked to the collegiate system of the University since 1990, when Kellogg College, the University’s 36th college, was established. Kellogg College is specifically geared to the needs of mature and part-time students

Libraries and computing facilities

Registered students receive an Oxford University card, valid for one year at a time, which acts as a library card for the Departmental Library at Rewley House and provides access to the unrivalled facilities of the Bodleian Libraries which include the central Bodleian, major research libraries such as the Sackler Library, Taylorian Institution Library, Bodleian Social Science Library, and faculty libraries such as English and History. Students also have access to a wide range of electronic resources including electronic journals, many of which can be accessed from home. Students on the course are entitled to use the Library at Rewley House for reference and private study and to borrow books. The loan period is normally two weeks and up to eight books may be borrowed. Students will also be encouraged to use their nearest University library. The University card also provides access to facilities at Oxford University Computing Service (OUCS), 13 Banbury Road, Oxford. Computing facilities are available to students in the Students'Computing Facility in Rewley House and at Ewert House.


Assessment is based on a mix of coursework assignments and a dissertation. The assessment falls into two parts, the first of which is called by the University a Qualifying Test and the second of which is called the Final Examination.

The Qualifying Test

The Qualifying Test, which must be passed in order to proceed to the rest of the degree, consists of a total of three assignments related to the work of the first term.

Assignment 1: A review of a work of local history (500 words). 10% of the marks for the test.

Assignment 2: An essay on issues relating to the nature of local history (2,000-2,500 words). 40% of the marks for the test.

Assignment 3: An essay on issues relating to the sources and practices of local history, especially the relationship of fieldwork and/or quantification to other sources and approaches (2,500-3,000 words). 50% of the marks for the test.

The Final Examination
The second part of the assessment determines the final classification of the MSc and comprises eight written assignments and a dissertation.

There will be 2 x 2,500 word assignments for each of the Sources, Methods and Foundations papers. (In total the assignments for the Sources, Methods and Foundations papers comprise 10% of the marks for the final examination.)

There will be 2 x 5,000 word essays for each of the Advanced Papers. (In total the essays for the Advanced Papers comprise 40% of the marks for the final examination.)

There will be a dissertation of 15,000 words (The dissertation counts as 50% of the marks for the final examination.)
