Mini-MBA – We understand that undertaking an MBA is a significant commitment, consequently, we offer students the opportunity to trial the MBA through our ‘Mini-MBA’ graduating with a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration. This is a commitment of 2 semesters (or 9 months), successful students can also progress on to complete the full-time MBA should they wish.
The part-time MBA is taught over 2 academic years, starting in September each year. If you wish to "fast track" you can study the course over 1 academic year September to September.
The course begins with a residential induction programme, where students spend 2 days familiarising themselves with the course, with their classmates, and with the academic team.
Students will attend lectures on a weekly basis, (Tuesday in year 1 and Wednesday in year 2) in semesters 1 and 2 (September to December and January to May).
In semester 3 students complete modules on a 3-day "block" basis. This means studying a subject intensely for 3 days which allows students to immerse themselves in the subject area.
Examinations are held after each semester in January, May, and September.

Training in biotechnology research with a strong emphasis on development of advanced practical skills and research methods.
MSc Biotechnology Research is designed to provide up-to-date knowledge and understanding of core areas of biotechnology with particular emphasis on enhancing practical and research skills. Within the programme, students will cover a range of diverse topics including: bioinformatics, diagnostics, genetic modification, stem cell technology and proteomics and modules will include "hands on" training in advanced laboratory techniques. The course has a strong practical element, with laboratory classes integrated in the modules across the first two semesters. Over the summer semester students also have the opportunity to undertake their own independent research project within one of the research groups in the internationally renowned Biomedical Sciences Research Institute (BMSRI) at Ulster. The BMSRI research covers biomedicine from the molecular to the whole human including disease development, prevention, diagnosis and therapy. BMSRI is ranked within the top five out of 94 universities submitted in the UK REF2014 panel in terms of research power in biomedical science. The course is primarily designed for those who wish to develop their career in the biosciences with particular emphasis on biotechnology research; including either academia or bio-pharmaceutical and bio-industries.

The LLM in Access to Justice (A2J) is a distinct and unique clinical legal education course in Northern Ireland and on the island of Ireland, there being no comparable courses at undergraduate or postgraduate level. The course gives students the opportunity to develop legal advice and advocacy skills by allowing them to represent appellants in Industrial and Social Security Tribunals. Students will also have the opportunity to engage their interest in the provision of legal services more generally as they are required to develop and manage the ‘Ulster University Law Clinic’.
The function of the course is to supplement the existing range of legal service providers by focusing on, and meeting, ‘unmet legal need’ in the fields of employment law and social security law. In doing so, students are tasked to analyze ‘unmet legal need’, the availability and consumption of legal services and reflect on wider issues of access to justice, ‘equality of arms’, and dispute resolution.
Students are expected to attend all classes associated with the programme and be punctual and regular in attendance. In semester one, students will undertake taught modules in Social Security Law and Policy, Employment Law, Tribunal Representation and Alternative Dispute Resolution. Student will also begin clinical work placement with the Legal Support Project within the Law Centre (NI) in the area of Social Security and induction to the Ulster Law Clinic. In Semester 2 & 3, Students will be based at the Ulster Law Clinic and/or clinical work placement with the Legal Support Project for the Clinical Legal Practice module where they will provide advice and representation to users of the Law Clinic. Students will also undertake the taught module Housing Law and attend classes in the Dissertation module.
Student clinicans will have placement as volunteers with our placement partner at the pro-bono Legal Support Project at Law Centre (NI). Students will undertake training and will providing specialist legal advice and representation on social security cases.
Students can also engage in placement through collaboration with the Legal Support Officer at Citizens Advice Regional Office. Students would focus on providing support in Social Security Commissioner’s cases.
Students will undertake employment law cases through the Ulster Law Clinic.
The Clinic staff have recieved recognition through a variety of awards. The Course Team received the Distinguished Team Teaching Award in December 2014 from Ulster University, as well as Learning and Teaching Awards 2014 Course/School Team of the Year in the UUSU awards. Dr Eugene McNamee was the recipient of the US-UK Fulbright Public Sector Award 2014 - Scholar at Fordham Law School, NYC, 2015. Dr Esther McGuinness was runner up in the highly prestigious Law Teacher of the Year Award OUP.
Clinic staff continue to engage in leading research and justice innovations related to practical implications of, and solutions to, access to justice problems. The Clinic was awarded funding by the Legal Education Foundation to analyse the role of university law clinics in the UK in delivering access to justice. Dr Gráinne McKeever received funding from the British Academy/Leverhulme to understand how court litigants participate in court hearings. The Nuffield Foundation has awarded Dr Gráinne McKeever and Dr John McCord, in partnership with the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, to conduct a human rights analysis of the impact of litigants in person (LIPs) on the Northern Ireland court system. Ciaran White has engaged in research to review the access to justice barriers arising for deaf clients attending consultations with private solicitors in Northern Ireland.

The LLM A2J allows you to develop the analytical skills prized by employers in a wide range of career pathways within the United Kingdom, Ireland and internationally. Students obtain experience in all aspects of legal practice, from client-handling and case-related research, to advocacy and representation, as well as developing and managing a working Law Clinic. The degree is relevant to legal practice and policy, and to research and advocacy roles in the voluntary, public and private sectors. Successful completion also opens up a range of further study and research options.
We are proud to state that all our graduates to date have have transitioned into employment, practice or further academic study. The connections created by the referral network have generated opportunities for our graduates in the form of trainee solicitor positions with one of the members of our referral network, Sullivans Law, for example. Graduates have also been employed as research interns in the Law Society of Northern Ireland for the last two years. Other students have taken up funded PhDs examining issues and concepts arising from their LLM studies, and continued working across the legal advice field.
This is a commercial law course, offering a series of standard modules with particular focus on modules that are at the intersection of law and technology, which is a topical and contemporary area of legal practice and academic research.
Additionally, some of the courses will be taught with industry collaboration in order to inject industry practice and ensure employability.
Apart from the compulsory dissertation module comprising 60 credits, all modules are optional, carrying 30 credit points each, and include the following: (a) Copyright & Information Law; (b) International Intellectual Property Law & Policy; (c) Internet Law & Policy; (d) Legal Technology, Innovation & Informatics; (e) International Corporate Law & Governance; (f) Corporate Social Responsibility & Human Rights; and (g) Ulster Business Law Clinic. Students are required to choose any four out of the seven modules.
The course is based at the University's Magee Campus in the heart of Derry/Londonderry. Derry is the second largest city in Northern Ireland and has excellent transport connections including an airport, a train terminal and a major bus station. Northern Ireland is in the United Kingdom but the border with the Republic of Ireland is only a few miles from Magee Campus. The MSc Sport Management course is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis. The full-time route has a one year duration and the part-time route is studied over two years, both starting in the Autumn Semester (September).
The modules on the course will provide students with a thorough grounding in general business and management principles as well as the specifics relating to the area of sports management. Students begin the course by studying towards the Postgraduate Diploma. On successful completion of this they progress onto the full Master's qualification.
An internship forms an essential part of this course. Students work alongside an employer in semester 3 which allows them to gain some good work experience to further apply and contextualise skill sand develop their CVs. This internship also forms the basis of the final assessment on the course - the Management Project.
Students have worked in local sport goods manufacturers and clothing organisations such as Ecco and Adidas as well as with sports clubs, teams and organisations such as the Belfast Giants, Ulster Rugby and the IFA.
There are a variety of careers available to graduates of the course. Many students take up roles within the sports industry, for example in consultancy, marketing or administration. Due to the great demand in Ireland for the professional qualification as Associate (ACIS) of the ICSA, Ulster University offers this course with face-to-face tuition to help you achieve such a demanding professional and academic qualification. This course leads to graduate membership of ICSA , the international membership and qualifying body for chartered secretaries and other governance professionals. The course has been developed in close collaboration with the Institute and is fully accredited by them.
Due to its success rate for graduate recruitment and links with employers, this course was awarded the PostGrad Ireland Postgraduate Course of the Year – Business in 2012. Graduates from the course go on to work for organisations such as Deloitte, KPMG, Eversheds, Citi and PWC. Such is the demand for students who are qualified in management and corporate governance over the past few years that over 90% of successful students have gained graduate level jobs.
Course content is structured to ensure that students gain essential, current knowledge and skills in a range of subject areas as well as meeting the professional requirements of ICSA. The course is flexible whereby students can choose to leave with GradICSA and a Postgraduate Diploma (essentially two thirds of the Master's course). Those with the relevant work experience can apply for chartered secretary status and use the post nominal: ACIS.

ICSA is the international membership and qualifying body for chartered secretaries and other governance professionals and is a world-leading authority on governance, risk and compliance. Chartered secretaries are professionals qualified in company law, accounting, corporate governance, administration, company secretarial practice and management. Chartered secretaries work as company secretaries and/or in other senior management and administrative positions in companies, charities, local government, educational institutions and trade bodies. The full-time MSc Management and Corporate Governance course is usually taught on two days a week, with lectures taking place during the afternoon and evening. As well as weekly lectures some subjects are taught on a "block" basis - meaning that the modules are taught over three days; one module in each of semesters 1 and 2 is taught in this way.
The part-time MSc Management and Corporate Governance course is usually taught over 2 years. In semesters 1 and 2 the lectures take place during the afternoon and evening of one day per week. As well as these weekly lectures, three modules are taught on a "block" basis - meaning that the modules are taught over three days.
Students completing the Master's qualification will be required to take three modules in semester 3, these are usually taught on a 3 day "block" basis between May and July.
Marino Institute, Dublin
Students study the course over a 2 - 3 year period. Students begin by working towards the Postgraduate Diploma from Ulster University which includes GradICSA. This is taught in Dublin at the Marino Institute. Students then have the option to continue on to the Master's part of the course.

They can also offer legal and accounting advice and manage the development of strategy and corporate planning.
The growth of the ICT industry has been identified as a top priority for the Northern Ireland Executive. According to Invest NI, Northern Ireland is the leading foreign direct investment region in Europe for software development and IT technical support centres. There are more than 900 companies in the ICT sector and many of these are international organisations.
The majority of new jobs have been in knowledge industries particularly ICT including software development, software testing and funds administration.
It is against this backdrop that we offer this course to graduates in subjects other than computing as an opportunity for career change, to enable them to exploit the opportunities for personal and professional development offered by this burgeoning sector.
The intensive one-year master’s conversion course is aimed at highly-motivated graduates with a good honours degree in any discipline with no more than 50% computing content. While the course has a particular focus on the employment needs of the local economy, the skills and abilities developed are easily transferred to a more global stage.
The overall aim of this course is to provide graduates equipped to apply best practice in software engineering to the development of a wide range of software systems in a variety of organisations. Skilled software developers are needed to support Northern Ireland’s burgeoning software industry.

They will have the necessary skills to work in initially work in roles such as software developers, software testers and/or academic or commercial researchers but will also have the capacity to diversify into other roles such as independent consultants.
The ethos behind this programme is the development of person-centred cultures, using a professional practice-based learning model that embraces practitioner inquiry and practitioner research, thereby contributing to the development of knowledgeable and dynamic person-centred practitioners who are sensitive to the needs of people who use healthcare services. The programme values knowledge gained through critical reflection on practice experience used in conjunction with the range of knowledge sources. The delivery of person-centred practice (McCormack and McCance 2010) requires practitioners to know and understand self in the context of their practice. Critical reflection is one means to achieve this. Consequently, within the DPHC the focus is on the practitioner learning from practice, understanding the theory underpinning their professional practice-based learning through critical reflection and applying this learning to practice. Many of the modules require students to provide evidence of their learning and development in practice through an academic portfolio mapped to learning outcomes.

Students are expected to attend all classes associated with the taught elements of the
programme and be punctual and regular in attendance.
Students will be already employed in Health and Social Care Organisations (either NHS or independent sector).
Students within the programme come to us with an existing employment background within health and social care. On completion of this programme we expect students to continue their employment in health and social care organisations with an enhanced range of transferable knowledge and skills to benefit their communities, individual patients/families and their carers and employer. We also expect graduates to achieve a higher professional and personal profile within their organisation, enhancing their prospects of promotion. Additionally, we expect a number of postgraduate students to progress to undertaking research studies within the Institute of Nursing and Health Research at the Ulster University and other institutions.

Ulster’s TESOL programme is the only master's level TESOL course in the UK which offers an overseas teaching placement.
You will have the opportunity to complete a placement in Gyor, Hungary, and teach English to non-native speakers, in either a state primary or secondary school.
Offered on both a full-time and part-time basis, the MA TESOL at Ulster is an exciting programme for individuals who wish to develop their teaching ability and knowledge about language.
You will study both the theory and practice of teaching, from classroom management to syllabus design, and gain the expertise and confidence to teach English in a variety of settings to students from across the globe.
Throughout the programme you will enhance your creativity and learn to adapt your teaching style and approach in order to effectively support a range of learners, with consideration to ethical and cultural differences.
You will also improve your research skills which will enable you to further your knowledge, particularly when completing the dissertation component of the MA, on a topic of your choice.
Employability is embedded within the programme design. A unique feature of the course is the eight-week ERASMUS-funded teaching placement in Hungary. This offers an authentic environment where you will have the opportunity to put your learning into practice.
MA full-time: normally 4 days per week in semester one; 3 days per week (6 weeks) plus 8 weeks teaching practice in sem 2; followed by independent study for the dissertation during semester three (summer semester). This can be done at a distance.
MA part-time: Year 1: normally, 2 days per week in semester one, 4 weeks teaching practice semester 2. Year 2: normally, 2 days per week in semester one, and 4 weeks teaching practice in semester two. This is followed by independent study for the dissertation during semester three (summer semester) and during semester one and two of year 3. This can be done at a distance.
This exciting MA in TESOL includes a fully funded Hungarian teaching practice placement, the University pays for flights and Erasmus funding can cover accommodation and subsistence costs. TESOL student teachers got to teach in Gyor, Hungary for eight weeks (full-time) or four weeks in years 1 and 2 (part-time). They depart in February and return in April. Gyor is a beautiful central European city located midway between Budapest and Vienna. Our students teach in primary or secondary schools and are supported by Hungarian host teachers and staff of the university who stay in Gyor for that purpose. The module gives an authentic opportunity to teach English to non-native speakers of English.
Graduates of this programme have gained work as English language teachers in private language schools, further education colleges, universities and schools in the UK, Ireland and in many countries all over the world. Some have progressed to doctoral study whilst others have got jobs as on-line English language teachers. Students have gone on to work in teaching related areas: for example, the Inclusion and Diversity service and developers of online English language teaching materials; whilst some of the students use their qualification to work for charities abroad in developing countries.

This fully online programme consists of two 30 credit modules; 'Principles of Pharmacology and Prescribing' and 'Assessment, management and treatment of ocular conditions' and will prepare GOC registered Optometrists to undertake the Clinical Placement and proceed to The College of Optometrists Common Final Assessment in Therapeutics. This programme has been designed in collaboration with Ophthalmologists, Pharmacists and Independent Prescribing Optometrists. Our course team have many years experience in teaching optometry and vision science to undergraduate and post-graduate students at Ulster. This programme compliments and extends our current General Optical Council approved BSc (Hons) Optometry course which has been producing high quality graduates for over 16 years.
This online course will allow registered Optometrists to increase their knowledge and skills in the area of Ocular Prescribing and Therapeutics.

Principles of Pharmacology and Prescribing
This module will equip the optometrist with further skills in pharmacology and prescribing to allow the development of safe and effective management of ocular conditions. The knowledge gained during this module will enhance the students ability to work effectively as an optometric independent prescriber.
Assessment, management and treatment of ocular conditions
This module will equip the optometrist with further skills in ocular therapeutics to allow appropriate management of a wide range of ocular conditions. Completion of this module will enhance the Optometrist's up-to-date knowledge of current treatment regimes for a wide range of ocular conditions and enhance his or her scope of practice.
This is a Distance Learning course and students access learning material via a virtual learning environment. 'elearning' is an excellent route for postgraduate learning as it gives unique flexibility and ownership of how and when you learn. It is a different experience from traditional face to face learning and is especially suited to adults who like to learn independently and are self-motivated. This course has been specifically designed with the elearner in mind, so learning material is appropriately displayed and students are encouraged to participate in discussion boards, and to contribute to online chats and are given regular small tasks to complete so learning is broken down into manageable segments.
Ulster University will provide the theoretical element of the Independent Prescribing programme. It will not be involved with the Clinical Placement element of the course. Ulster will not be responsible for arranging a mentor/supervisor for the student, arranging the clinical placements or examining hospital placement logbooks.
This qualification will allow the Optometrist to increase their scope of practice and manage and treat a wider range of ocular conditions.
Food Regulatory Affairs is an interdisciplinary subject area - integrating science, law and food/health policy as applied to the regulation of the entire food chain from pre-harvest to the consumer. International perspectives on Food Regulatory Affairs have become increasingly important, particularly since the formation of the World Trade Organisation and the international acceptance of Codex Alimentarius standards. This programme is designed to provide postgraduate training in Food Regulatory Affairs for individuals employed in the food sector, regulatory agencies, government departments, and trade organisations as well as those who wish to develop their career in this field.
The awards are granted jointly between Ulster University (UK), and University College Dublin (IRL), in association with University College Cork (IRL). European and global experts in science, law, economics, and policy contribute to the courses.
All the courses in the programme are entirely internet delivered through a modular format. Modules have a credit value of either 15 or 30 credit points. The credit rating of a module is in proportion to the effort required from the student, thus a 30 point module corresponds to 300 hours of notional learning time including viewing lectures, tutorials, discussion groups, coursework, assignment and self-study. All modules are at level 7.
For the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Food Regulatory Affairs students undertake taught modules worth a total of 60 credit points and this is delivered part-time over two semesters (i.e. over one academic year) with students taking one 30 credit core module in each semester.
For the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Food Regulatory Affairs students undertake taught modules worth a total of 120 credit points and this is delivered full-time over two semesters (i.e. over one academic year) with students taking up to 60 credit points of modules in each semester.
For the award of Master of Science in Food Regulatory Affairs students undertake taught modules worth a total of 120 credit points and complete a 60 credit research project module. Full-time students normally take three semesters (i.e. one academic year) to complete the MSc.
Full-time students will be advised to explore the possibility of taking a short placement in food companies and the Ulster University will facilitate such placements for students who are based in Northern Ireland.

The academic content of the programme helps students to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative, policy and scientific aspects of food regulatory affairs as well as to acquire skills to disseminate and implement knowledge in practice.
