You’ll study

Study for the Postgraduate Diploma degree lasts nine months, following the same taught classes as for the MSc. As well as allowing you to complete a recognised course in a shorter time, the Diploma provides the opportunity for a wider range of applicants to enter the operational research world. Students demonstrating sufficient progress may be allowed to transfer in-course to study for the MSc.

The course is structured comprising four classes each semester, with the ‘Becoming an Effective Operational Researcher’ module running through both semesters. The first semester involves only core classes, whereas the second semester involves only one core class and three electives.

- Dissertation
MSc students undertake a three-month project. This is typically for an external organisation. You’ll apply the concepts and theories studied on the course.
Subject to demand, the MSc can also be obtained part-time, over two or three years. The same topics are studied, normally 1 to 2 days per week. Most part-time students are already in employment and are sponsored by their employers. They carry out their project work within their own organisations.

Distance learning option

All classes are taught using material presented online. Classes are supported by faculty members who also teach on the full-time course and who guide and support discussion via discussion forums.

This is a flexible degree and duration can vary. Minimum durations are PgCert: 13 months; PgDip: 20 months; MSc: 26 months.

Work placement

The apprenticeship scheme forms a vital component of the MSc in Operational Research. Through the scheme, many of our students spend an invaluable three weeks in January working in the analytical function of their host organisation.

Last year, more than 35 selected students worked with over 25 different organisations based all over the UK, including Capita, Department of Health, Diageo, Doosan Babcock, First Scotrail, Glasgow City Council, NHS, RBS, Scottish Enterprise, SEP, Scottish Water, and Tesco Bank.

Students work on all manner of projects that link directly to their semester 1 classes, allowing them to deliver real work that can make an immediate impact to their host organisations. Every year, our students gain not only valuable experience that is relevant to their job hunt, but also make contacts that can be of assistance throughout their career.

The scheme has a highly competitive selection process, where the students with the strongest generic skills and academic capabilities are chosen for external placements. Other students are also given invaluable opportunities to work with external organisations in this three week period, for example in the form of group projects analysing their operations.

In addition, many MSc projects are carried out for an external organisation. Students spend the three months from July to September working on a project of importance to their clients. The aim is to gain direct experience in applying the concepts and theories studied on the course. Projects may be carried out individually or in small teams of two or three students. Project clients include many major concerns, in fields ranging from aerospace to whisky distilling.

Major projects

Most of the taught modules on the programme introduce you to a variety of techniques, methods, models and approaches. However, the practical reality of applying analytical methods in business is often far removed from the classroom. Working with decision-makers on real issues presents a variety of challenges. For example, data may well be ambiguous and hard to come by, it may be far from obvious which business analysis methods can be applied and managers will need to be convinced of the business merits of any suggested solutions. While traditional teaching can alert students to such issues, understanding needs to be reinforced by experience.

This is primarily addressed by the core module ‘Becoming an Effective Business Analyst’, which takes place over both semesters and also involves the ‘apprenticeship scheme’. Every year, case studies and challenging projects are presented to the students by various organisations such as Accenture, British Airways, RBS and Simul8.

Industrial placement

A wide range of companies, such as AECOM, ATKINS, CAPITA, CH2M HILL and ClimateXChange (Scotland’s Centre of Expertise on Climate Change), are offering placements exclusively for this MSc. You’ll study

You'll take the compulsory module Civil Engineering Design Projects. This module gives you the opportunity to work on real projects. You can choose between a renewable energy project or an industrial project. You’ll develop comprehensive and innovative designs that involve structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and water engineering, management, environmental and financial planning.

In additional to the industrial placement you'll also take the compulsory module Research Protocols for Science & Engineering which supports the dissertation project. You also have a wide choice of optional modules.

Following successful completion of the taught component, you’ll undertake a dissertation. If you’re on one of the specialist streams you’ll undertake a research project on a topic related to that stream. AIM
The Diploma course is strongly inter-disciplinary. It aims to develop an understanding of the underlying processes of economic, social and environmental practice with an emphasis on sustainability. Thus, as well as teaching the theories and concepts underlying rural development, the course places strong emphasis on the application of theory to development problems in rural areas, with an emphasis on the EU.


STRUCTURE AND CONTENT
Students on the full-time diploma course are required to take a total of four taught modules and a double module Work Experience Placement during the academic year from September to June.


Global Sustainability, Local Solutions and Rural Policy (single module)
This module explores the history of Rural
Development locally and provides an introduction to European Union, national and regional policies and strategies. Students will become familiar with key policies such as the Common Agricultural Policy, EU Rural Development Programmes, Rural Development Programme, and a range of EU legislation relating to rural policies.

Foundations for Sustainable Development (i) (single module)
This is a broad ranging module exploring the major global issues in environmental sustainability, such as Climate Change, Biodiversity, Waste Management, Water Management, Renewable Energy. The module will introduce concepts and methodologies such as Environmental Economics, Ecological Footprinting and Environmental Impact Analysis as well as moral and ethical ways of considering sustainable development problems.

Methods for Rural and Sustainability Research (single module)
The purpose of this module is to provide students with a basic understanding of the various methods which are used in both rural and sustainable development practice and research.
The module is intended to complement other modules in the curriculum by providing students with a range of techniques which can be utilised in gathering knowledge, undertaking analyses, reporting findings and applying knowledge. Formal lectures are supplemented by case studies and visiting speakers.


Work Placement/Internship (double module)
Each student will work with a University tutor to identify and undertake a specific piece of work either in their own workplace or in a suitable co-operating organisation that has a rural or sustainability interest. The placement must normally be completed during years 1 & 2 of the degree and will be guided by an agreed set of learning objectives and work tasks. Assessment will be based on the student’s diary or log, a final report prepared by the student and an oral presentation to students, staff and the placement mentor. This internship will offer students the opportunity to combine theory with practical tasks and to develop professional work habits.

The aim is to ensure, by the end of the programme, adequate coverage of the range of disciplines relevant to sustainable rural development. All taught modules will be assessed by a combination of continuous assessment and written and oral examination.


PROGRESSION TO MSc
Students who attain the required standard in the six modules and submit a satisfactory research proposal may progress from the Graduate Diploma to the MSc by completion of a dissertation which is equivalent to three modules. This element of the programme involves original research including a literature review, data gathering and analysis. The research will be carried out under the supervision of a member of the academic staff from July to September (inclusive).

The MSc in Leadership for Sustainable Development will be of direct relevance to those who wish to develop the skills to make a difference in building a sustainable society. It is of direct relevance to recent graduates as well as those working in sectors dealing with sustainability.

AIM

This innovative programme has been designed in consultation with employers and academics to provide students with:

• in-depth understanding of the theory and practice of leadership in the context of sustainable development and an ability to identify and critically evaluate the role of leadership for sustainable development within a range of organisational contexts

• knowledge of the principles and core themes associated with sustainable development and an ability to critically evaluate best practice within a range of organisational sectors

• an ability to apply knowledge and skills gained from the programme in order to positively contribute to the sustainable development agenda through research projects

• competence in employability skills that will facilitate a professional approach to the work environment

STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

Course Content
The innovative programme embraces action based learning, facilitated through a series of work placements and group project to foster critical thinking and promote the use of initiative for problem solving and decision making. The course is a full time programme comprising seven modules over twelve months.

The course structure is as follows:

Semester 1:

• Leadership for Sustainable Development: to explore theories and practices of leadership in the context of sustainable development

• Foundations for Sustainable Development:1 to consider core themes underpinning sustainable development

• Foundations for Sustainable Development:2 to consider policies and strategies for sustainable development



Semesters 2 & 3:

• Sustainable Development in NGOs (Placement 1): to provide experiences of sustainable development and leadership in Non Governmental Organisations

• Sustainable Development in Governance (Placement 2): to provide experiences of sustainable development and leadership in Governance

• Sustainable Development in Business (Placement 3): to provide experiences of sustainable development and leadership in Business

• Effective Leadership: Group Project: to engage in a project to promote sustainable development through ‘experiential learning’.
Assessment

A range of assessment methods are used including research projects, group work, presentations, reports and essays, exam and seminar contribution.

CAREERS IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Graduates from this programme have developed successful careers upon completion of the MSc in Leadership for Sustainable Development. For example, past students have gone on to gain relevant employment with a range of organisations in the public, private and non-governmental organisations sectors. These include the Sustainable Development Commission NI, Action Renewables, the Environment and Heritage Service, Northern Ireland Environment Link, NIE Supply, George Best Belfast City Airport, the United Nations and the Consumer Council in Northern Ireland.

You'll take the compulsory module Civil Engineering Design Projects. This module gives you the opportunity to work on real projects. You can choose between a renewable energy project or an industrial project. Accreditation

Open Access

Home students can also choose to study through Open Access. This is initially a non-graduating route. You register for one module at a time and have the option to build up credits eventually leading to a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MSc. You can take up to five years to achieve the qualification.

This option is popular with students in employment, who may wish to undertake modules for Continuing Professional Development purposes.

Home students who do not meet the normal MSc entry requirements for this programme are welcome to apply through the Open Access route instead.

- Dissertation
MSc students undertake a three-month project, typically for an external organisation. This gives you the opportunity to apply the concepts and theories you've studied on the course.

Work placement

The apprenticeship scheme forms a vital component of this course. Many of our students spend an invaluable three weeks in January embedded in the analytical function of their host organisation.

Last year, more than 35 selected students worked with over 25 different organisations based all over the UK, including Capita, Department of Health and Tesco Bank.

The scheme has a highly competitive selection process, where the students with the strongest generic skills and academic capabilities are chosen for external placements.

In addition, many MSc projects are carried out for an external organisation. Students spend the three months from July to September working on a project of importance to their clients. The aim is to gain direct experience in applying the concepts and theories studied on the course.

Project clients include many major concerns, in fields ranging from aerospace to whisky distilling.

Project: Becoming an Effective Business Analyst

This takes place over both semesters and also involves the ‘apprenticeship scheme’. Every year, case studies and challenging projects are presented to the students by various organisations such as Accenture, British Airways, RBS and Simul8, to name a few from last year.

Student competition

Every year, the best full-time MSc mark in the ‘Becoming an Effective Business Analyst’ module is recognised by the DSTL Prize. The prize involves a formal recognition by the department and an award of £100, which is kindly provided by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.

Distance learning

This course covers the operation of interconnected electrical power systems. Such interconnected power systems combine a number of different components, generators, transmission lines, transformers and motors, which must be appreciated to understand the operation of the interconnected system.

It provides students with an overview of distributed generation techniques and describes the contribution of distributed generation to network security. Overview

Oil and gas remains one of our major energy resources and the recovery of these resources is increasingly important, just as it was in the last century. What has changed with time is the need to recover more of the reservoir, operating in harsher environments both physically and economically. Equally there are challenges due to changes in knowledge and the relative lack of experience from engineers in the market. Traditionally in the UK, the vast majority of engineers entering the industry do so through two routes; first as facilities or surface engineers - chemical and process, mechanical and electrical engineering working on the processing systems to stabilise fluid from the reservoir. The second route is through the petroleum engineering or sub-surface engineering route which sees engineers develop knowledge and skills necessary to locate, drill and extract oil and gas reserves.

This programme (See http://www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk/prog/msc-oilandgas-technology/ ) was been designed with the help of the industry to provide a cross over between surface and sub-surface engineering functions with the intent that future oil and gas operations can be better optimised to enhance recovery of the reserves. In order to maximise recovery, surface engineers in an operating company must communicate effectively with the reservoir and production engineers within their own company as well as develop relationships with and assess the work of contractors and vendors when designing and constructing facilities. Therefore, surface engineers need to be competent not only in the areas of process design, pipeline engineering, but also be familiar with reservoir engineering, production technology and a variety of other engineering and management subjects, such as safety and control, management of projects, economics and planning, etc.

The programme contains 8 taught courses covering key topics in surface and sub-surface engineering. Two projects towards the end of the programme provide opportunities for participants to demonstrate their knowledge in the design of a surface facility, and to study a specific topic of interest.

Why this course?

The course provides you with a strong grounding in the analysis of international politics. There’s a focus on the role of major organisations in a global environment.

The programme trains you in different theoretical and methodological approaches from modern political science. You’ll evaluate their usefulness in explaining international political processes and organisational practices.

You’ll gain knowledge of global and regional problems including economic, security and environmental threats.

You’ll have the opportunity to do a research placement through the Erasmus programme - from Finland to Italy, and from Portugal to Slovakia.

You’ll study

The course consists of core and optional classes and a dissertation. The core classes provide an introduction to theories of international politics and to the actual workings of major world organisations, such as the EU.

English language requirements

If you’re a national of an English speaking country recognised by UK Border Agency or you have successfully completed an academic qualification (at least equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree) in any of these countries, then you do not need to present any additional evidence.

For others, the School requires a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.5, with no individual component below 5.5. Pre-sessional courses in English are available.

Pre-Masters preparation course

The Pre-Masters Programme is a preparation course for international students (non EU/UK) who do not meet the entry requirements for a Masters degree at the University of Strathclyde. The Pre-Masters programme provides progression to a number of degree options.

Learning & teaching

All classes are taught in seminars. You'll receive training with a strong empirical focus, supervision in small group seminars as well as individual sessions.

Classes average 20 contact hours with additional computer laboratory sessions.

If you’re studying part-time you’ll attend classes across two academic years. You’ll then work on a dissertation over 10 months.

You’ll be assessed by a variety of methods including:
- essays
- options papers
- group projects

These account for two thirds of the total assessment. Your dissertation, produced over the summer, accounts for one third of the total assessment.

About the course:

If you are a full-time working professional who wishes to research your professional practice, this course has been designed for you. The Doctor of Education is only offered part-time, to accommodate research in the professional context.

During the first two years of the course you will focus on what it is to be studying at doctoral level and how to research your professional field.

The key focus of this programme is the Independent Research for Practice component, which is supervised by a Director of Studies and usually taken between years three and six.

Our programme is very flexible and allows you to fit your studies around your personal commitments - it will take you between four to six years to complete it on a part-time basis.

We offer a distinctive strand to our 'lifelong learning', providing a structured opportunity for you to pursue your studies to doctoral level.

A very broad notion of 'education' is adopted by the programme, encompassing the development of relevant skills, understanding and knowledge across a range of occupations. So, while the programme is relevant for teachers, tutors and lecturers, it is also appropriate for you if you're involved in the processes of learning, teaching, coaching and development in any setting.

This exciting new programme provides students with a world-class legal education which prepares them for the global and international environment in which they will provide legal advice.

The JD is a first professional doctorate degree required for licensure in the field of law. The programme delivers a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD) to graduates from a discipline other than law and provides the necessary professional exemptions to allow holders to apply for the professional stage in England and Wales, North America and elsewhere.

The JD is taught via intensive, small-group teaching, with each student expected to participate fully in each module. Other forms of delivery will occasionally be utilised, including seminar questions prepared in advance of the class, group and independent work in class, and short lectures to aid students’ understanding and knowledge of the subject matter. Students will be taught as a single group and there is a supportive learning environment.

Students take ten compulsory taught modules, and in the final year write a dissertation module and taught modules from the wide selection of existing postgraduate modules on offer in the School.

Students also have the opportunity in Year 3, or to spend a semester of Year 3 studying at another University from a selection of international study abroad partners.
