The MA in TV and Radio Journalism is recognised by the NUJ and conducted on both a full and part-time basis over a 1-2 year period. Course Structure

The MA in TV and Radio Journalism is designed to be delivered on a full-time basis over one calendar year and on a part-time basis over 2 years. It consists of nine taught modules which are delivered during the academic year and a dissertation which is completed during the summer months. Throughout the programme, learners will have an average of 18 hours of contact per week, attending lectures, news days, labs and studio sessions. In order to assimilate the material and to complete the assessments, learners are also required to spend a significant amount of time outside of those contact hours engaging in self-guided study, development and practice. Learners on the MA programme will complete 9 mandatory modules and a dissertation.

The Postgraduate Diploma in TV and Radio Journalism consists of the 9 mandatory modules and does not include a dissertation. The first semester of this programme is designed to be commonly taught with MA Journalism learners and provides an understanding of the workings of the media industry as well as developing specific skills in journalism. The second semester builds on this knowledge and contains broadcast journalism specialisms such as Video Journalism, Radio Documentary Research and Production and Radio, TV News and Current Affairs. The reporting, writing and packaging of news for online audiences requires an evaluation and understanding of the digital media world and the module Digital Journalism will equip learners with the skills required to produce news and features in a web context

This is an innovative course, taught over four, week-long residential retreats over one year (full time) and will commence in September - some of these are in Central London, others in beautiful Egham Campus near Windsor.

Between retreats the course is run via distance-learning with a website, chat room and e-tutorials. This makes it possible for those living outside the UK, and those with busy working lives, for instance freelancers and those in the film and TV industries, to take time out to attend. We have a wide variety of students on the course including established actors, comedy writers, editors, producers, novelists and many others.

During the MASTFiR course (MA in Screenwriting for Televion and Film - Retreat) you will cover writing for feature film and television as well as new developments such as web drama. You will develop a range of ideas, then go on to write film and television outlines, and several drafts of a feature film screenplay, a TV single drama, or a TV series or serial bible and sample episodes. You will be immersed in a creative atmosphere conducive to concentrated learning and group interaction; a core unit is the Development Lab, where you will present your work in progress to the group for criticism and feedback, and experiment with co-writing.

Course content and structure

You will study four core course units.

Core course units:
Script Craft
This unit will focus on the acquisition of basic writing skills, and is a gateway to the ‘Story and Theme’ unit. You will explore the specifics of scene and dialogue construction, formatting and issues around research and around adaptation from source materials – e.g. plays, novels and news stories.

Story and Theme
This unit teaches the essential components of story and structure, the specific language of film storytelling and genre. It will include lectures, screenings of films and extracts, and individual and group analysis of films. You will produce ideas, formal outlines and a feature-length screenplay or TV series bibles and episode.

Development Lab
This is a discussion forum to which you bring the work above, where it is critiqued and debated from a number of points of view including aesthetic, generic, marketing, audience and budget. Development Lab is interactive and is at the core of the course; it replicates many of the development processes you will face in the film and television industry.

Contexts: Current British Film and TV Practice
This unit covers current aesthetic and generic trends in British film and television. There will also be lectures and seminars on budget, schedule, commissioning, finance, contracts, casting and marketing, and you will explore the production and marketing implications of your own screenplay projects.

On completion of the course graduates will have:
- the ability to discriminate between project ideas, present ideas and drafts to others effectively, and both give and receive constructive criticism

- the understanding of the aesthetic and economic conditions of the marketplace, how their work may be viewed in terms of budget and audience, and the stages a screenplay will go through in development and production

- a broad and detailed understanding of the nature of the film and television screenplay- how it signifies, how it communicates meaning to the film producer, director, actor and to the audience

- advanced understanding of the processes of writing a screenplay, from initial concept to final draft

- advanced understanding of the various stages of script development and how each is documented- outlines, treatments, pitch documents and so on

- critical knowledge of the current genres and trends in film and television and how they have evolved in recent years, particularly in the context of economic and market developments in these industries

- an understanding of the UK film and television industries, including their structure, institutions and working practices

- a broad understanding of the group nature of writing and development, and how the roles played by the various parties- producer, script editor, director and so on- shape and influence the screenplay.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out by a variety of methods including script outlines and scenes, a completed feature film screenplay and/or TV series episode and ‘bible’, and marketing and pitch documents.

TV Drama has entered an unprecedented era of international acclaim and success. US drama series like The Wire, Mad Men, Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad have challenged and enthused audiences across the world with TV drama that is original, complex and non-formulaic. Recent TV drama series from Denmark and Sweden have created an appetite for ground breaking thrillers such as The Killing and The Bridge as well as the political drama Borgen. There is a new appetite among UK drama commissioners and independent producers to develop work along such original lines.

COURSE OVERVIEW

‘TV Drama – Creating The Bible’ is an eight week course, requiring at least three days attendance at the NFTS in Beaconsfield each week, that will equip writers and producers with the knowledge and skills required to create a high-end ten-part drama series.

Led by Peter Ansorge, ex-Head of Drama at Channel 4, where his BAFTA and Emmy award-winning commissions included A Very British Coup, Traffik and The Politician’s Wife, participants will write and complete a full bible and pilot episode for a drama series that has the potential of running over more than one season.

The course does not follow any received academic view about screenwriting but will create the actual conditions of working on an original drama project over a period of time among professionals with a proven track record. Among the guests Peter Ansorge has brought to previous writing courses at the school are writers David Hare and Howard Brenton, producers Jane Featherstone (Kudos), Simon Heath (World Productions) and impresario Michael Grade who has been Controller of BBC1, and Chief Executive at both ITV and at Channel 4.

For ‘Creating The Bible’ guest speakers will include Heads of Development at all3media-owned drama companies such as Company Pictures (Shameless, Wolf Hall), Neal Street Productions (Call The Midwife, The Hollow Crown) and Bentley Productions (Midsommer Murders.)

There will be two days set aside each week for writing your bible and pilot episode. Also, there are homework assignments each evening which will be reviewed on screen the following morning where we will work on improving your script and bible. The working atmosphere will be that of a professional writers’ room.

Guest speakers will review the projects each week and provide professional advice and input.

All3media group comprise eighteen leading production companies, independent creators of UK TV and multi-platform programming from around the world. At the end of the course, participants will pitch their completed bible and pilot episode to Heads of Development from all3media drama companies, providing participants with a unique contact with and support from the industry.

CURRICULUM

The modules for writing the pilot episode and bible will address and attempt to answer the question: what makes great TV writing?

There will be in-depth discussion of TV Drama, past and present, including the work of Dennis Potter, Paula Milne, Alan Bleasdale, Mathew Weiner, David Simon and Vince Gilligan..

Included in the modules will be:
-The importance of metaphor
-The development of character
-The sense of place
-The importance of surprise
-The opening scene
-The sense of an ending
-Steal, don’t copy
-The rewrite: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

As the final module, you will pitch your project to an all3media drama team.

The course is open to new and established writers and drama producers. There is no requirement to have had a drama produced or broadcast.

The UK has a mature and highly successful TV industry with exports of programmes and formats worth over £1.3 billion annually. Broadcasting is still an expanding industry in many parts of the world, and is a crucial driver for the creative and cultural industries more generally. This course provides the wide perspectives and specific skills that are essential for success in the broadcasting industry.

This innovative course examines the different ways in which broadcasting is organised around the world. It has a particular emphasis on the production techniques of British television, approaching them through a comparative international lens. Students study a major BBC drama series in depth (currently the Saturday evening series Casualty) from conception, through to scripting and production organisation. The course includes visits to the production base in Cardiff as well as crucial skills training in the industry-standard MovieMagic budget and schedule software.

Each student takes creative control of their own television or radio production to complete the course. The Media Arts department’s extensive range of industry-standard equipment, our TV production studio, state-of-the-art Mac Labs and location store (all of which has recently benefited from a £100,000 investment), is available to all students and training is provided in using it as part of the course.

Located near London, the course provides students with a privileged insight into the production practices of the UK television industry. You will have guest lecturers from both production and management in the broadcasting industry. The wide range of past guest lecturers include:

Students negotiate their own learning from the first module onwards, defining aims and approaches that are relevant and feasible within their individual context. They review and adapt these plans along with their emerging expertise to develop projects that can be applied to their local context. Emerging filmmakers who enter the course with a clear sense of direction can make their project funding applications and development plans more coherent and their career plans more feasible. Students apply to the course specifying their unique combination of ambitions and accomplishments. Their statement serves as a foundation for the My Learning Trajectory Assignment, detailing attainable course goals (aligned with employers’ agendas, where applicable, or industry research), outlining the strategies the student adopts to achieve them. The module My Film & TV Knowledge Base enables students to deepen their understanding of, and widen their range of practical, conceptual and theoretical investigations at postgraduate level. Following these introductory modules, students embark on their very own learning journey structured through four negotiated modules towards their personal stated - and regularly reviewed – attainment goals.

How will this course be taught?

Students will receive individual mentoring by both a postgraduate mentor and an experienced professional, who is usually working in the film or TV industries in a leading capacity. Students can also participate in regular web conferences together with peers led by a module leader, as well as optional face-to-face events coinciding with key industry networking opportunities such as international conferences and film festivals.

The course is designed for global delivery in a world where cameras and edit computers including smartphones are widely available - but expertise in using these devices in an effective way is hard to come by. Accordingly, we expect students with a professional background and ambitions to have access to their own equipment relevant to their chosen specialism, and would be able to complete practical course work submissions (which students negotiate themselves) using a recent smartphone. The course adopts a ‘Bring Your Own Device’ ethos, and students are being guided to plan practical work that they can complete relying on accessible equipment only.

How will I be assessed?

The journey starts with formative assessment of student blogs detailing the films, programmes and people that influence their plans and build towards both oral and written presentations of their plans, working towards the production of creative work and relevant business structures. As assessment on this course is highly integrative, these assignments look forward to later, student negotiated modules, and engage learners in evaluating and supporting the feasibility of their plans (whilst the evaluative parts of later assignments ask students to reflect on these earlier plans and the journey in between). Moreover, establishing a constant cycle of observing, theorising, planning and film TV programme making encourages students to experience the connections and synergy between all these stages and to develop habits that enable lifelong learning.

Screenwriters may use some of the earlier and smaller negotiated modules to lay out their story in an industry style ‘treatment’ or ‘step outline’, analyse ‘successful’ screenplays in their genre or made by intended collaborators, research future industry collaborators in depth before writing a full-length feature screenplay for their Major Project.

Directors can relate their aims, past work and approaches to industry practice, pursue a work placement if they are early in their career, or investigate and experiment with different ways to develop a visual strategy for a project, rewrite screenplays, look at performance and directing styles, or research successful case studies and potential collaborators.

Producers may evaluate a variety of past, ground breaking or potential future projects, research potential markets, audiences and finance sources including standard industry investors and crowd funding to build a detailed business case e.g. for their Major Project. Students focusing on technical grades may choose work placements (which they in the first instance identify, approach and negotiate as part of earlier negotiated course work), support practical work with in depth research including history and context, or experiment with new workflows.

Entry requirements

Those with relevant experience are encouraged to apply for admission with advanced standing through Accreditation of Prior Learning or Prior Experiential Learning, where appropriate. Students entering with advanced standing will be advised of the procedure for claiming accreditation of prior experience or learning, and of the regulations governing the amount of credit that can be claimed (see below). Advice will also be given on the extent of the match between their experience/learning and the relevant course outcomes.

Applicants have to meet their own equipment needs on this course. This includes a recent computer (laptop, desktop or versatile tablet, less than 5 years old, including software relevant to their specialism) and a broadband connection, as well as access to filmmaking equipment (e.g. camera, sound recording, postproduction facilities and other relevant resources) that may be required to produce practical course work to the technical standard that they specify in the early modules.

Each application will be required to include a ‘statement of intent’ (500 words for applicants meeting all admission criteria, 1500 words for applicants using APL/APEL), and applicants may be required to provide other supporting material, e.g. full marks/results records, or examples of their practical, professional or academic work. Eligible applicants will be interviewed by videoconferencing (e.g. Skype).

Overseas students may apply directly to the University. Students for whom English is not their first language should meet the appropriate English language standards. Who is it for?

This course is suitable for students with a first degree looking to become good all-round television journalists capable of working in newsrooms, on multi-media and in documentaries and current affairs. Applicants should have an interest in video and TV films and have a broad general knowledge including lifestyle, sport and politics. While this course is NOT about TV presenting, it’s important that you aren’t afraid to be in front of the camera and even more important that you are keen to write and provide material for others to present. Vitally, you should want to communicate using moving pictures and be excited by the wonderful world of television!

Objectives

The MA in Television Journalism has unparalleled contact with the TV industry and each Wednesday in term one and two, students work in the TV journalism industry. The course is designed for 30 students subdivided into teaching groups of 15 with daily personal contact with Professor Lis Howell, and award winning film maker Sally Webb. The documentary legend David Lloyd (formerly commissioning editor of Channel Four current affairs programmes) and ABC news producer Mike Trew make up the team. Students make half hour documentaries in teams of three in term three and these films have won awards like Guardian Young Journalists of the Year; The BJTC documentary award; and been re-worked for broadcast on BBC 2’s ‘Newsnight’. The course is grounded in news production but also branches out with a Question Time programme which has included guests such as Jeremy Corbyn; Stephanie Flanders; Jon Snow and Yasmin Alibi Brown plus may more.

The MISP is a full-time intensive course, with a maximum enrollment of 42 students. The diploma, issued by Università Cattolica, is recognized as a first level Master’s degree by the Italian Government.

Three months before the end of theoretical classes, the students will have to choose between one of the following careers: screenwriting or production. The students, who choose the screenwriting career, will have to write and deliver a final project from which the writing abilities developed during the program should emerge. Typically,the final project takes the form of a script for a feature film, which can either be an original idea or an adaptation.

The final project can be written in English, Italian, French or Spanish. The students, who choose the production career, will have the opportunity to undertake an internship within an established production or distribution company, a TV network, an advertising agency or on a film set.

The MISP aims at providing its stu- dents with the adequate knowledge, wide-ranging skills and contacts to meet the requests of an increasingly global and varied audiovisual industry.

This course enables you to develop your professional scriptwriting goals by providing the opportunity for you to learn not just scriptwriting skills but an awareness of the demands of the broadcast industries served by these skills and how to address an audience through genres developed specifically for broadcast media. You will be enabled to work autonomously and in groups to solve problems of storytelling, plot and characterisation and to demonstrate an awareness of the commercial demands of the industries you will serve. The ability to advance your knowledge of scriptwriting and the industries of television and radio are provided on this course and you will also experience the opportunity to develop new skills such as pitching script and story ideas and communicating in more traditional academic formats like essays alongside your existing scriptwriting ability.
