This course is designed to allow graduates with an appropriate honours degree to train at postgraduate level to become a primary school teacher.

You will leave this Teacher Training course with a PGCE qualification. This can be awarded at 3 levels dependent upon performance during the training year, either 30 (Professional) or 60 or 90 (Postgraduate) M level credits, in addition to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), the required qualification to teach in England.

The course aims to develop your professional competencies in the creation and delivery of programmes in primary education, and to develop the wider professional knowledge and skills expected of a qualified teacher.

This is a 36 week course. The equivalent of 24 weeks (120 days) is spent in 2 carefully selected placement schools and 12 weeks in the university.

Course content

After a one week Induction Programme, you will be in school on serial and block placements to gain a supported understanding of the role of the teacher. Within a school, you will receive expert support from a subject or class mentor who will hold weekly meetings with you to help you to prepare, teach and review lessons and develop your subject knowledge.

Each school or college will have a professional mentor who will help you to understand the organisation of the school, pastoral care systems and the legal and social framework of school including supporting services.

Associate Teachers have a phased introduction to teaching that will reflect your personal needs. Initially you will observe the regular teacher, help with group work and then move towards sharing classes with the teacher before eventually taking classes yourself. As well as teaching your subject, you will be required to contribute generally to the life of the school.

The university element of the course is designed to engage Associate Teachers in critical reflection on the nature of education. We also aim to develop your knowledge of the primary curriculum. Group and individual tutorials in the university will give you an opportunity to discuss your ideas and the challenges you may face.

The university aspects of the course take place on the Stoke campus and will draw upon the experience of practicing teachers as well as highly experienced tutors. The school experience is based in local, carefully selected partnership schools.

The blend of practical experience and university study will be evidenced by the compilation of portfolios and the production of short written academic papers.

Graduate destinations

On completing your Teacher Training course (PGCE) you are qualified to teach in schools in England. On starting your first teaching job, you can join our Masters in Education course and be in a position of completing your Masters in Education by the end of your second year of teaching.

This course is designed for those with a first degree in either forensic science or another science subject (ideally chemistry or biology but other degrees are also acceptable) who want to further their knowledge and experience of forensic science.

The full-time distance learning MSc should be completed in 18 months including your dissertation. There is a two-week long residential practical programme, held at our Stoke-on-Trent campus at the end of Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma stages of study. These workshops enable you to put your learning into practice and gain valuable experience in our state-of-the-art laboratories, crime scene house and mock courtroom facilities.

The MSc dissertation completes your study. This is a independent research project which will usually be undertaken, at least in part, in our state of the art specialist facilities.

Course content

This course builds upon your previous experience in the biological, chemical or forensic or other appropriate sciences to develop your ability to analyse evidence in a myriad of forms. The emphasis is on accuracy, accountability and thoroughness, with the ultimate aim of providing results and interpretation for use by a court of law. The theory is delivered using Blackboard, an online virtual learning environment. This provides the flexibility of studying at your own pace and from any location in the world. Whilst using Blackboard, you will interact with other students on the course through online discussion groups and receive excellent support from tutors via e-mail or phone.

The Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma courses are, respectively, the first third and first two thirds of the MSc course. At Postgraduate Certificate level, the emphasis is on the crime scene, specifically the collection, packaging and analysis of evidence such as fingermarks, footwear marks, documents, hairs, fibres and glass. Those continuing on to the Postgraduate Diploma will then change the emphasis of their studies to the chemical and biological analysis of evidence in forensic laboratories. During the Diploma, you will learn about a host of techniques, from the interpretation of blood spatter evidence to the analysis of illicit drugs, and from DNA profiling to the analysis of fire accelerants and drugs. The Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma stages of study each end in a two-week long residential practical programme, held at our Stoke-on-Trent campus. These summer workshops enable you to put your learning into practice and gain valuable experience in our state-of-the-art laboratories, crime scene house and mock courtroom facilities.

MSc students continue their studies beyond the Postgraduate Diploma stage, allowing specialisation in an aspect of forensic science. To complete the MSc, you will undertake a independent research project in an area either suggested by yourself or by choosing a title from a list of topics. In this work, the emphasis is on initiative and originality in the analysis and interpretation of results. The experimental part will usually be undertaken at our Stoke-on-Trent campus but, by agreement, could be based at the learner’s place of work or at a local institute.

Today, Cyber-Operators are required to have an ‘enriched’ background drawing elements of practical experience from fields as diverse as sociology, psychology, networks and network security, computer science and computer security, information management and information security, software engineering and reverse engineering, and of course, the law.

We have a diverse number of placements with companies from the security industry, high tech crime units and government organisations.

This one year, National Award is available to SENCOs from any school in the UK. It is delivered though a partnership between Nottingham Trent University and Nottinghamshire County Council. Prior to the establishment of the National Award, we had an established track record of jointly delivering a highly regarded induction course for SENCOs.

What will I study

The National Award comprises of two elements:

Study sessions involve:

* five days for independent set tasks

Compulsory taught sessions

The compulsory taught sessions cover:
1. Introduction to National Award for SEN Co-ordination and induction into NTU; ethics; and the importance of pupil voice.
2. The national and local policy context; an overview of the legislative framework; SEN tribunals; and removing barriers to achievement.
3. The professional role of the SENCO and the role of leadership.
4. Assessment and planning.
5. Working in partnership with others.

Independent set tasks

The set tasks all involve school-based activities and include:
1. One day (equivalent) of meetings with your head teacher to focus on the professional role of the SENCO and review how to meet your learning outcomes. It is recommended this is around two hours a term.
2. Half day visit to an alternative phase mainstream setting, focussing on the professional role of the SENCO, low / high incidence of SEN and disabilities, participation and learning, and working in partnership with other professionals.
3. Half day visit to either a community special school or a special school focussing on a particular needs, for example autism. The focus is on high incidence of SEN and disabilities, participation and learning, and working in partnership with other professionals.
4. Half day attendance at a multi-professional / multi-agency meeting, with a focus on working with other professionals.
5. Two days in school to undertake tasks linked to the written assignments, with a focus on conducting an inquiry, audit and evaluation of provision and working with pupils, parents and colleagues.
6. Half day optional attendance at a tutorial on Meeting the Learning Outcomes at NTU. If you decide not to attend this, you may use the time for further course related work in school.

Masters level study

The Master's component consists of four compulsory tasks:
1. A critical review of legislation, policy and literature as it relates to the SENCO role.
2. A critical review of SEN policy in action within your school
3. A small-scale research study about improving pupil achievement.
4. A critical analysis of school practice of consulting, engaging and communicating with pupils and parents.

Our MSc Finance degrees give you the theoretical background and practical skills for a career tackling contemporary issues in Finance. Each course has been created in collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Finance (CFA), so your modules also contribute towards the institute's own qualification, which you can work to complete after graduation.

Our MSc Finance and Accounting route is designed to build on your first degree in Accounting. Its focus is on developing your understanding by applying theories to practice, covering the subjects that will enable you to complete your professional body entrance exams and progress your career.

If you are starting your course in September, you can choose to add a year's work placement, making your master's a two-year course. It's a great way to put your learning into practice and gain valuable real-world experience to boost your career.

We have extensive links with corporate partners who can offer placements, so we can help you find something perfect. If you undertake a placement, you must take up the Business Research Project in Semester Three.

Teaching and learning methods are centred around interactive workshops which are highly participative in nature and will employ case studies, discussions, business simulations and group activities.

Interactivity is key to our teaching and we are committed to providing courses that adopt teaching methods that are appropriate to the student cohort and the specific modules.

We ensure that support and guidance is in place, especially during the early stages of the course and assessment periods, to help you become comfortable with operating in a student-centred learning environment.

Assessment methods

A range of assessment methods are used across the course, the choice of which reflects the needs and demands of the different types of module. Some modules will assess the ability to work collaboratively in a team and others will assess individual capability. Types of assessment will range from examinations to group presentations including essays, reports, financial analyses, literature reviews and research based projects.

The interactive nature of the taught sessions offers opportunities to gain feedback on your performance before being formally assessed and increasing use is made of eLearning to further support the feedback process.

Our innovative MSc International Business (Dual Award) course enables you to achieve two M-level degrees, from two different universities, faster and at a lower cost than taking them one after the other. It's an opportunity to make a major impact on your career in a relatively short period of time, broadening your horizons and giving you sought-after international exposure.

You will begin by exploring the core areas of International Business here at Nottingham Business School. You will then build on this by studying for a term at one of our acclaimed partner institutions (ISCTE in Lisbon, Portugal; KEDGE in Marseille, France; ESC Clermont in France, or Brescia University in Italy).

Study tour

The study tour takes place each year, all students have the opportunity to take part. The cost of the trip is covered by your tuition fees, and all students will be provided with help and support in applying for the necessary visas.

The destination and style of the trip varies each year, but previous destinations have included Lisbon, Brescia and Venice. 

While abroad you will have the chance to take part in a number of activities, including industry visits, networking opportunities, attending lectures and seminars at a summer school, and of course some sight-seeing. The trip is also normally linked to your consultancy project, giving you the opportunity to meet the organisation you are working for, and present your ideas directly back to them.

The trip has proven itself to be a key factor in the success of the programme, with students benefiting from the business and cultural aspects of it. Some students have also been successful in securing internships with organisations involved.

Our MSc Economics degrees build on your undergraduate knowledge, providing you with the theoretical understanding and practical skills to progress your career in a challenging and rewarding role. Throughout, you will learn from a wide range of business, management and social perspectives.

In your first semester you will work with the latest economic theories and the methods of analysis based on them, including the use of quantitative data. You will use these methods to contribute to resolving challenging issues in today's global business and management environment.

Your first semester develops a strong core knowledge of institutional, accounting and financial modelling frameworks. You will explore the operation of markets, their major participants and the regulatory environment, as well as building a firm understanding of corporate finance, basic accounting and financial analysis.

In your second Semester you can deepen your core knowledge of Finance, or specialise by taking an Investment Banking or Accounting route. Finally, your third semester sees you undertake a major project, applying your skills in a real-world setting, conducting independent research or gaining an international perspective by working overseas.

On our MSc Finance and Investment Banking route, you'll learn about analysing and valuing investment products, critical analysis of information in derivatives markets and portfolio and investment management. You'll work hands-on with financial tools and techniques, including using our Trading Room.

Our MSc Entrepreneurship degree is designed for ambitious future entrepreneurs from a whole range of first degree backgrounds, including engineering and science. It aims to foster innovation and value creation, giving you the knowledge, skills and capabilities to create and lead successful start-ups.

You will develop a strong foundation in building and managing the key functions of a new venture, and be given the opportunity to actually do so during the course. We will expose you to the networks and investment opportunities you will need to get your ideas off the ground, and there’s even the chance to access seed funding directly from the Business School.
