The Postgraduate course in Fashion and Lifestyle Brand Studies is predominantly theoretical, analytical and research based, allowing individuals from related disciplines who do not necessarily have appropriate practical skills, to study at postgraduate level within the fashion environment.

Individual projects will address a range of student led interests, supported by theoretical underpinning. Case Studies will inform the background issues emerging in the industry, whilst also exemplifying key directions for future markets. Trend forecasting and application, brand management, consumer demographics and industry analysis all underpin and facilitate the development of campaign planning and management.

Teaching involves a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, presentations and industry liaison, and assessment is continuous. Students are expected to contextualize their work within a current framework, and develop evaluative skills in order to articulate their point of view, discussing and debating them in a peer group, consequently preparing them for a wide range of careers, including brand management, trend forecasting and brand consultancy.

OPPORTUNITIES

Study trips are an essential part of research activity that brings design to life. Throughout the programme, students are introduced to contemporary influences with international city trips and study visits to exhibitions and museums - Manchester, London, Berlin and New York have been regular trips in recent years (students will be required to pay for overseas trips/visits and these are, therefore, optional).

The opportunity for a structured work experience will be provided for every student who requests it. This is a major commitment by the University to help our graduates to reach their potential and thrive in their careers after graduation.

A course module that will help you plan your career is available as a free choice module (called an elective), which you can study as part of your degree programme.

Overview

This dynamic new course will prepare you for the world of contemporary, global fashion design, improving your professional skills, your academic understanding and your industry knowledge.

You’ll develop a comprehensive understanding of the international fashion world, and the business-led factors that influence professional practice.

Our course mixes traditional and experimental fashion design processes with theory and practical work. This will encourage you to think about important issues and future trends in the fashion industry and how you could adapt or improve upon your design, styling, marketing or promotional work. For example, you might explore relationships between your design process, marketing strategy and psychological theories. Or you might look at the connections between mathematics and pattern-cutting; or sustainable design and production processes.

We'll investigate different markets and consumers, too. Having learned more about people's wants and needs, you'll use your insight to create innovative designs, along with branding and promotional strategies.

Throughout the course you'll be working closely with other students. Together, we'll share and debate our ideas and working practices, and learn to critically analyse our work.

Your studies will take place over three trimesters in a single calendar year.

Our course will equip you with the skills, knowledge and professional understanding you need to work as a fashion designer. You’ll also be well-prepared for related roles, such as styling and promotion, brand and marketing management, PR management/press, fashion production, buying or trend forecasting.

Assessment

We'll measure your progress using a number of assessment methods that reflect the skills you'll need to demonstrate in the fashion industry. These include sketchbooks; reflective journals; technical files; brand, consumer and market research files; collaboration files; brand and promotion packages; portfolio work (visualisation and styling); 3D realisation and collection creation; presentations (audio visual and oral); written reports; your Master's dissertation; and Personal Development Planning (PDP).

Course Structure

Subject specific modules for this course include a lecture and seminar programme, a portfolio of concepts and treatments, research strategy, portfolio – short projects (management), and a major project / dissertation, where you can write about a subject you enjoy in much greater depth.

Theoretical concepts will be delivered in a lecture, followed by smaller group seminars based on case study analysis. Short, post-lesson ‘fact’ tests will be made available over Moodle, with discussion and interactive sessions will encourage you to critically examine key elements of business and management.

You will study the course full-time for one year. Assessments are an integral part of the learning process, and it’ll take on various forms within the modules, including coursework assignments, reports, controlled assessments, exams and your final dissertation. MA Design Management and Cultures combines academic study with creative and professional practice in a project-led curriculum that draws on a range of interdisciplinary perspectives from business and the arts.

The content of the MA Design Management and Cultures course reflects current knowledge, debates and issues within the discipline. Students will interrogate, through practical projects, a range of perspectives including: design research methods; design thinking for the cultural and creative industries; branding; the role of creative interventions in brand communications; trend forecasting; strategies for management of brand experiences; design for social needs and sustainability; project management; entrepreneurship and innovation; change management; and design leadership.

The course is designed to support employability and employer engagement by developing both transferable and industries specific high-level skills. There will be regular contact with industry professionals through studio and industry visits, live briefs and guest speaker and networking events.

MA Design Management and Cultures combines an understanding of management and organisation from perspectives drawn from business, the arts and humanities. The curriculum has a professional focus with a strong emphasis on the development of leadership, management, communication and analytical skills.

Structure

MA/Postgraduate Diploma Design Management and Cultures is a four term full-time programme (30 weeks for PG Dip, 45 weeks for MA). Taught within the School of Design at LCC, it is part of a suite of courses that includes MDes Service Design Innovation.

In the autumn term you will critically engage with ‘design thinking’ and concepts and theories of leadership and innovation and experiment with a range of interdisciplinary research methods.

At the start of the spring term you will take the collaborative unit, which is common to all courses at Masters level. Mid-way through the spring term you will consider how design management can bring about transformation within a global context, and explore the role of design in the creation of social, political and cultural meaning.

In the summer term you take the knowledge, skills and experience from the units studied to date on the course and synthesise these through the production of a self-directed major project and associated thesis.

This merging of textiles technology and aesthetics is complex and requires designers who are able to converse with engineers and scientists, handling technical information as well as expressing conceptual design ideas.

Through established links with the DR-i (Design Research Initiative) and Brighton's School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, this MA is designed to stimulate such diversity in textile design thinking. We are seeking talented students who are keen to push the boundaries and perception of what we understand textiles to be.

This course is suitable both for recent graduates interested in furthering their skills or exploring new areas and markets, and for experienced designers who want to challenge their practice in a creative environment.

Due to the open and explorative nature of the course, students from non-textiles backgrounds such as 3D craft design, fine art, materials development, engineering and science are welcome to bring a fresh viewpoint and build on their existing specialist knowledge.

Semester 1

The first semester is made up of three modules and serves as a foundation to your learning experience, imparting key research skills, exploration beyond your discipline and initial explorative practice-based enquiry.

Practice-based Enquiry (Part One)

Spanning semesters one and two, this module provides a reflective environment for rigorous explorative practice-based enquiry and the development of design concepts identified in the self-initiated project proposal submitted at interview. Increasingly informed by research and critical awareness skills developed in the supporting modules, you will explore and reflect on novel design concepts and the application of practice-based research methods. You will also be encouraged to engage with live research, industry contacts and collaborative projects.

Research Skills and Training

Through a series of lectures and seminar groups with active researchers, you will explore the value of research within a practice-based design context. You will develop research skills and an understanding of different methodologies and how research can be used as a design tool.

Option module

Placed in the first semester to maximise the potential areas of study, the options module takes advantage of the range of subjects and learning experiences available from across the college. This module allows you to tailor your study and learning experience to complement and inform your specific area of interest from an early stage. Learning alongside students from varied disciplines, you will be able to explore areas of personal interest from subjects including design history, sustainable design, professional practice, and historical and critical studies.

Creative and Contextual Enquiry

Informed by the learning undertaken in semester one, you will critically engage with and reflect on your subject area, exploring diverse cross-disciplinary influences that inform your practice. Through the use of relevant research methods, this creative contextual enquiry will stimulate awareness and rigorous critical evaluation of cultural, technological and research debates, both within and outside of your discipline.

Semester 3

In the third semester, you will fully integrate your previous learning into the realisation of your thesis.

Practice-based Textile Design Thesis

During this self-directed module, you will put into practice the skills acquired throughout the programme of study, working towards the realisation of the final proposal submitted at the end of semester two. You are expected to rigorously explore and fully resolve a body of practice-based textile design inquiry, which should be positioned at the forefront of your academic or professional discipline and advance design thinking within your stated field.

The module contains planned lectures, group seminars and individual tutorials delivered by lecturers who are active researchers or innovative design practitioners. You will have access to a diverse range of lecture series and conferences held at the university as well as exhibitions and trade fairs relevant to your study.

You will have the opportunity to extend your skills through advanced textiles technology, working closely with expert technical demonstrators. Relevant placements or access to external study are negotiable on an individual basis, determined by the requirements of your proposal.

Careers and employability

Having attained a high level of specialist textile and transferable design skills as well as research skills, graduating students will be ideally placed to take advantage of a diverse range of employment opportunities. This skill set will facilitate employment for graduates as innovators and decision makers, leading developments and advancing design thinking within the textiles and allied design industries, research within the commercial / industrial sector, further academic research at doctoral level or serving as a strong foundation to the development of their own business.

The course will be ideal for graduates motivated by the desire to launch or develop an existing career in the fashion industry. Central to our MSc Fashion Marketing Management degree is the opportunity to integrate marketing theory with and principles with practice, especially in relation to your own career needs.

You will gain critical insights into the needs and desires of fashion consumers, understand the importance of brand marketing in fashion and the international scope of the fashion industry. You will explore aspects such as fashion buying and merchandising including trend prediction, supply chain management and fashion forecasting.

You will discover the art of effectively communicating with a variety of fashion customers using both digital and traditional methods through our Multi-Channel Fashion Marketing module. Finally you will apply your knowledge and understanding to creating marketing strategies within International Fashion and Brand Management focusing on all levels of the industry, from fast fashion to luxury brands.

Achieving all of this means our approach to teaching goes beyond merely presenting you with sets of theories and principles of marketing. Instead it extends to you being able to evaluate the usefulness of these theories and principles in practice through the use of case studies and 'live' projects. Course Content

The programme is comprised of three distinct stages, Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) Fashion Marketing, Postgraduate Diploma (PGDIP) Fashion Marketing, and MSc Strategic Fashion Marketing, with a range of compulsory taught modules (120 credits), and a non-taught element (60 credits). The MSc will be awarded on successful completion of 180 credits.

Term 1: (Certificate = Completing 60 credits):

• Multi-channel Fashion Marketing (20 credits) • Strategic Fashion Buying and Product Management (20 credits) including Trend Prediction, Supply Chain and Fashion Forecasting • Modern Marketing Research for Fashion (20 credits)

Learning & Teaching

The course is delivered with a mixture of lectures and seminars. Many of the assessments will be based on real world cases and therefore specialist guest speakers and visits to businesses will also form part of the learning journey. At Master’s level, self-management and independent research and study is expected with students being directed and encouraged to deepen their understanding of particular areas of Marketing. Moodle is used as an interactive VLE but the development of a learning community is particularly prevalent at Cardiff Metropolitan with excellent student support. 

Assessment

Assessment on the programme is mixed and will include a variety of formats. You are assessed throughout the course on the basis of coursework and presentations, many of which are focused on real-life cases studies.

In this groundbreaking 42-credit program, students explore the production, dissemination, and consumption of fashion from both historical and contemporary vantage points. The program investigates the different segments and meanings of fashion as creative and multifaceted industry – from haute couture to fast fashion; as a phenomenon dealing with identity, race, and gender; as an everyday act of consumption; as a material object; as an image; and as an artistic practice.

By situating fashion as a manifold phenomenon, the program casts light on the relationship between practice and theory as students explore the interdisciplinary theories and methodologies that have shaped the field of fashion studies while also discussing their applications within the fashion industry. The program also challenges students to engage with contemporary concerns such as sustainability, fashion curatorial practice, globalization, technological innovation, and digital fashion futures.

Core and elective courses open up broad perspectives on fashion and its connections with design, production, consumption, imagination, representation, embodiment, and identity. Finally, as fashion studies is inherently interdisciplinary and multi-methodological, courses examine fashion through the perspectives of anthropology, sociology, art history, gender studies, visual and material cultural studies, and film and media studies.

Paris and Access to Fashion

With Paris as a backdrop, the program brings students in contact with the European and French fashion industry and its cultural fields of production. Students are invited to engage with the industry through lectures and master classes held by fashion practitioners; special projects with fashion brands (mainly Paris based); visits to European and Parisian fashion trade fairs like Première Vision-Paris; unparalleled access and visits to fashion houses and ateliers; and the most prominent fashion and textile collections and archives in France, from the Musée Galleria to the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. The program also assists students in applying for internships with established and independent fashion brands during Paris Fashion Week and during the summer break while also encouraging them to independently observe Parisian streets, neighborhoods, and retail environments critical to the fashion system.

Skills, Competences, and Professional Possibilities

The aim of the MA Fashion Studies program is to create polyvalent and critical researchers and professionals able to adapt to the heterogeneity of the fashion industry and its various sectors. In particular, our students develop competencies in fashion communication – from fashion writing and criticism to "image-making"; in trend-forecasting and marketing analysis; in fashion curating; in the research and archival practices connected to private and public museums or/and brand heritage. The course is aimed at both professional practitioners wishing to pursue a sustained period of time developing new ideas or recent graduates wishing to focus their studies and refine ideas at an advanced level. The course will also consider students from a non-industrial / product background, providing they can offer clearly articulated and informed reasons for wishing to study Product Design at an advanced level.

A student defined placement module in the second semester of studies allows the student to further explore areas of relevance to their studies, either through arranged placement, collaborative activity or research visits. As well as ‘hard skills’ such as modelling, new product development, styling and product graphics, they are now also beginning to embrace the ‘soft skills’ of branding, user interface design, trend spotting and forecasting. Spin offs of these activities can now be seen as production management, new start up initiatives / own product development, corporate identity and qualitative market research

Students will be supported by staff input through a series of design activities during semester one that are designed to identify an area or interest that can then be fully explored through the following two semesters. Complementary to the design modules are two research modules that provide theoretical underpinning. There are opportunities to explore issues through a dynamic research experience that again is defined and structured by the individual. The final semester of studies allows students to bring together all that has been developed and researched during the course.

We have well equipped studios and workshops, supported by highly skilled technical staff. Supporting the craft workshops and design studios, we have excellent suites of high spec computers for CAD, assignment writing and image manipulation. The University has excellent library / study facilities with a very extensive collection of design books and periodicals, together with many e-resources and support.

Graduates have developed successful careers within a wide range of design related disciplines, including designer / maker, freelance or in-house designer for manufacturing, teacher, design buyer and design manager to name a few.
