Organisations and People: This module examines key issues arising from contemporary research in organisational behaviour (OB) and human resource management (HRM). It provides an integrated analysis of management, organisations and people, developing the conceptual, strategic and practical skills necessary for managers in complex, global organisational contexts.

International Strategic Management: This module analyses strategic decision-making within business. You will develop a critical understanding of the strategic processes of business management, the interconnections with the functional domains of marketing, human resource management and corporate finance, and the management of knowledge systems.

International Financial Markets: This module provides an overview of financial instruments in a multi-currency world, taking account of insights from portfolio theory concerning the relationship between risk and return, the diversification of risk, and the pricing of assets.

International Financial Management: In this module the financial management of multinational companies and the influence of macroeconomic, fiscal, currency and political environments on business and financial decision-making are examined in an international and global context.

New Venture Creation: This module examines the advantages and disadvantages of the various routes to business start-up, including new venture creation, or establishing a business based on your own expertise, experience and ideas; buying an established business; purchasing a franchise; and succession through a family firm, an increasingly common way of becoming involved in entrepreneurial activity.

Optional module (choose 2):

Islamic Finance: This module provides an insight into topical issues relating to Islamic financial instruments and related risk management issues. The first part of the module examines issues relating to financial contracting, instruments and various intermediation issues. The second part focuses on the role of the capital market in providing Islamic financing, and highlights financial engineering and risk management features of this type of business.

Knowledge Management: This module examines the processes whereby organisations and individuals develop and utilise their knowledge bases. Successful knowledge management hinges on people, culture and technology. As such it has professional and academic links with organisational behaviour and organisational learning.

Contemporary Issues in Management: This module develops several theories and concepts in contemporary management theory and practice. It provides a detailed and critical analysis of management, further developing the conceptual, strategic and practical skills necessary for managers in complex, global organisational contexts.

Financial Analysis: This module analyses the techniques that are used to evaluate a company’s financial position and performance. You will examine the principles underlying inter-firm comparison (comparing the performance of one firm with another) and trend analysis (comparing the performance of the same firm over different periods).

Investment Strategy and Portfolio Management: This module evaluates the development of investment strategies for bonds, equities and derivatives that are designed to achieve optimal risk-return outcomes, and examines the measurement and evaluation of the performance of a portfolio of investments.

Public Sector Management: This module identifies the distinctive characteristics of the public sector in a competitive market-driven environment. Organisational forms in the public sector are reviewed, in the light of the changing culture of public services, competition, best value and public expectations.

The MSc degree may be more suitable for applicants with some previous background in mathematics, statistics or econometrics, while the MA degree is more suitable for applicants who prefer to adopt a predominantly non-quantitative approach to their studies. However, both degrees include a compulsory module in Research Methods, which includes coverage of both quantitative and non-quantitative research techniques. Provided you are registered for the correct modules for your chosen degree, it is normally possible to transfer between the MSc and MA degrees during the first few weeks following your initial registration.

The MSc and MA degrees in Business and Finance are scheduled for a duration of 12 months. Each degree programme consists of two parts.

Part 1 is a wholly taught component, contributing 120 credits. Part 1 is taught during the two semesters which make up the academic year. Teaching during semester 1 normally runs from late-September to December, with examinations in January. Teaching during semester 2 normally runs from late-January to early-May, with examinations in May and June.

Part 2 is a supervised dissertation of around 10,000 words, contributing 60 credits. The dissertation provides you with the opportunity to critically review, and possibly (but not necessarily) produce an original contribution to, the literature in any part of the taught syllabus. Part 2 is completed during the summer months, from June to September. You are expected to submit your dissertation by the end of September in the calendar year following your initial registration for your MSc or MA degree programme.

Continuous assessment is an integral part of all of our taught modules. The weightings attaching to coursework and other forms of continuous assessment vary from module to module, from a minimum of 25% to a maximum of 50%.

Performance analysis is the newest of the sports science disciplines and investigates actual sports performance or performance in training. Analysis can include technical, tactical, KPIs, coaching behaviour and movement analysis within a game. It can also cover pre-match, live and post-match analysis, scouting, talent identification and trend analysis.

What is the MSc in Sports Performance Analysis about?
This programme has been developed in response to the marked growth in the demand for people with performance analysis knowledge, competencies and skills across a range of sporting clubs and organisations and it will be an area of expansion in the future. This innovative MSc (Level 9, 90 credits) programme will prepare graduates for future opportunities in perfomance analysis by offering a blend or theory and practice ensuring practical knowledge underpinned with a theoretical foundation. The programme is aligned with a number of National Governing Bodies of Sport to faciliitate experiential learning. Fashion design, wholesaling and retailing have grown dramatically in the last five years, with 10,000 fashion-related jobs. There are 4,600 fashion retail firms in Toronto that generate annual sales of $2.6 billion. Sales have grown by 6.4 per cent in the last year. Employment in the wholesale and retail trade grew by 34.5 per cent or 13,000 jobs in the last five years.

Graduates may find employment in companies that develop, manufacture, market, import, wholesale, distribute or retail fashion apparel and accessories. Employment settings include apparel suppliers, wholesale distribution companies, fashion retail companies, importers and logistics firms, marketing divisions within major retail operations, and up and coming online businesses. The Postgraduate course in Fashion and Lifestyle Brand Studies is predominantly theoretical, analytical and research based, allowing individuals from related disciplines who do not necessarily have appropriate practical skills, to study at postgraduate level within the fashion environment.

Individual projects will address a range of student led interests, supported by theoretical underpinning. Case Studies will inform the background issues emerging in the industry, whilst also exemplifying key directions for future markets. Trend forecasting and application, brand management, consumer demographics and industry analysis all underpin and facilitate the development of campaign planning and management.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

Teaching involves a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, presentations and industry liaison, and assessment is continuous. Students are expected to contextualize their work within a current framework, and develop evaluative skills in order to articulate their point of view, discussing and debating them in a peer group, consequently preparing them for a wide range of careers, including brand management, trend forecasting and brand consultancy.

The course is aimed at ambitious designers, designer-makers or textile artists who wish to develop opportunities within the profession and who may wish to set up on their own or with others in small teams.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

The course is offered in both full and part-time modes. It is normally one year (3 trimesters) in duration in full-time mode or 6 trimesters in part-time mode. The first two trimesters comprise taught sessions and assessed projects, while the Master’s Project in the final part of the course is by negotiated project only. Completion of the first 2 modules on the course lead to the award of the Postgraduate Certificate, and completion of the first 4 modules leads to the award of the Postgraduate Diploma. Subsequent completion of the MA double module leads to the award of MA Design: Fashion and Textiles.

You will be introduced to research skills and methods, product development, design management and methods, with marketing and business skills. The emphasis of the course is learning how best to present ideas, and where and how to place them in the market.

The course is developed through seminars, lectures, tutorials, visiting speakers, group critiques, market research and personal research. You are encouraged to trial a product in the market. This may be through first hand experience, or through working with studios and agents for designers, shops and craft markets (for designer makers), or with galleries or public spaces (for textile artists). Students propose a route of study through the course to explore and research a chosen area of textiles in knit, print, weave, or embroidery for fashion or interiors, or in fashion design.

Research Methodologies - Part One introduces generic methodologies with Part Two considering subject specific data retrieval analysis and evaluation techniques.

The Development of Product, Market Research and Product Ideas - Developing ideas technically and aesthetically, in-depth investigation into techniques and researching to market.

Marketing Skills - Marketing and Business skills – developing an understanding of marketing requirements for textile designers and artists.

Product Sampling and Development and Research - Initial product sampling techniques and investigation. Developing and progressing ideas to enable the creation of new products. Range planning.

TEACHING METHODS AND RESOURCES

The first trimester (PGCert) consists of two modules. Research Methodologies consists of a taught programme of lectures, seminars, group critiques, and assignments. You will also negotiate a programme of study for the Product, Market Research and Product Ideas module. The emphasis at this level is on ideas. During the second trimester (PGDip) you will take two further modules: Marketing Skills comprises of lectures, seminars and research; the Development of Product and Product Ideas is negotiated by each student. The final trimester, leading to the MA, involves a negotiated study which you will propose. The study will be research based resulting in a body of work for assessment.

Specialist facilities include computer studios with over 70 Macs, as well as flatbed and transparency scanners. There is a recently re-equipped digital media studio. Fashion and Textiles students benefit from specialist studio spaces for both digital and screen printing, knitting, weaving, embroidery, laser cutting and pattern cutting, using the latest digital technology for CAD/CAM. All students have access to workshops in photography, sound and video, etching and litho, as well as the specialist Art and Design library.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The main aim of the course is for students to identify their own employment opportunities. Other possibilities may include textile design, product or fashion design, retail or sales and marketing opportunities, teaching, trend prediction and promotion, or further research in industry or education, and exhibiting in galleries as a textile artist.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The PGCert is assessed by studio exhibition and/or portfolio presentation with a marketing report. The PGDip involves a written report including market analysis of your chosen product field. Practical work is presented by studio work and/or portfolio. For the MA you will present a cohesive body of creative work, supported by written work.
