This unique course enables specialist registrars to acquire a scientific and analytical approach to orthopaedic practice, and engenders a class of orthopaedic surgeon with a depth and breadth of skills, knowledge and attitude based on a solid foundation of science and clinical expertise.

The postgraduate certificate aims, in exceptional circumstances, to allow those who withdraw from study at the end of one year to exit with an award for demonstrating a limited range of science, clinical skills, service delivery and research awareness.

Course structure
The course is designed for part-time study and is delivered on Wednesday afternoons each week with 14 mandatory skills days taught throughout the year. The taught component is delivered over a two-year rolling programme with Year 1 and Year 2 students studying modules together. Students will normally be expected to be working as an SpR or in a senior non-training post in trauma and orthopaedics. All applicants will be expected to undertake dissection. Teaching staff are nationally and internationally renowned experts and provide a broad range of learning experiences through lectures, student presentations, group work and discussion. Throughout the course, confirmed employment in relevant clinical activity is crucial in integrating the acquired science and clinical skills into the reality of clinical practice.

Areas of study
The underpinning science for trauma and orthopaedics will cover: gross and microscopic anatomy (presented specifically for this clinical setting); relevant physiology including biochemistry, genetics, biomechanics and bioengineering; the pathology and pathophysiology of both acute and chronic conditions; and a clear focus on treatment options. Studies in clinical and surgical techniques will address in detail both assessment and therapeutic approaches.

The Trauma and Orthopaedics MSc has been designed to reflect the growing trend towards greater integration of clinical service, research and education in the NHS, as exemplified by the development of the various Academic Health Science Centre models, in order to speed up the development of improvements in patient care.

Degree information

The programme complements clinical training, with a particular focus on the scientific and research content. Students develop an advanced understanding of orthopaedics and trauma and develop an appreciation of scientific research in terms of appraisal of the current scientific literature/evidence and experimental design, practice and analysis.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits). There are no optional modules for this programme.

Dissertation/report
All MSc students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 8,000–10,000 words.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and consultant clinical conferences. Each taught module will be assessed by a two hour unseen examination. The submission of the dissertation and viva voce for assessment will take place in the final year of the programme.

Careers

The programme aims to enhance the training of orthopaedic trainees, promoting a scientific approach to surgery. Combined with the existing NE London Higher Surgical Training programme, this MSc offers students an excellent preparation for FRCS (Orth) and/or further research in this field.

This two-year, part-time masters programme, taught entirely online, is offered by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh, and leads to the degree of Master of Surgery (ChM).

Based on the UK Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum, the ChM in Trauma and Orthopaedics provides the opportunity for trainees to select those advanced modules relevant to their declared specialty and supports learning for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) examinations.

The programme is designed to run alongside clinical training and complement in-the-workplace assessment.

A written examination (MCQ) is held in the second year, following completion of core modules.

Year 2

Teaching

Our learning and teaching strategy uses a blended approach. You must attend the Trauma and Orthopaedics module as block teaching. For all other modules the learning and teaching strategy is designed to be as flexible as possible. You can choose to study by attending classes, by distance learning or by flexible learning (a combination of attendance and distance learning).

If you are an attending student, learning and teaching methods include key lectures, seminars involving group discussions and structured learning activities, practical computer lab classes and tutorial support.

For distance learners, we use the virtual learning environment to provide you with interactive structured learning materials – written learning materials, narrated PowerPoint presentations, structured-learning materials and activities, alongside discussion boards, wikis and blogs to support discussion with module tutors and other students.

We provide tutorial support by email, phone or Skype for if you are distance learning student. As a flexible learner you can use both of these approaches throughout each module depending on your personal needs and work commitments.

The Trauma Surgery programme is unique in design, delivery and assessment with the innovative use cadaveric teaching and increasingly sophisticated simulation methods to enhance learning. This innovative Masters degree is suitable for qualified practitioners who have been appointed to surgical care practice training posts within surgical directorates. Your role should encompass the provision of care and appropriate intervention within the perioperative environment, on wards and/or in clinics (usually within a specified surgical specialty).

The programme will provide you with a systematic and critical understanding of the breadth and depth of knowledge within specific areas of practice. You will develop core and specialist surgical skills and extend your knowledge and practice within the surgical care environment. This will include some operative procedures that will enable specialist practitioners to provide continuity of service and standards of care to patients in areas which do not necessarily need to be provided by medically qualified staff.

What will I study?

Initially, you will be given a broad overview of surgical practice, covering areas such as clinical examination and diagnostic tests. You will also study and practice first assistant skills, basic surgical skills, and generic surgical care practice skills (including all of the pre, intra and post-operative patient phases). Research and leadership skills in relation to the role of a surgical care practitioner are also introduced and discussed.

In the second half of the programme, you will undertake a specialist negotiated module which will be tailored to your specific specialist practice requirements. For instance, if you work for an orthopaedic team then the module will be tailored to the specific requirements of that team, potentially considering themes such as understanding the pathophysiology of joint disease and strategies for their treatment, the use of implants in elective orthopaedic surgery and in relation to specific orthopaedic procedures, and knowledge of available options and surgical techniques.

A dissertation module focuses on a clinical project that will demonstrate leadership and innovation in a specific clinical issue.

How will I study?

The programme incorporates a blend of face-to-face study, independent learning and time spent working in practice. Delivery is at St James' in Manchester, although some face-to-face sessions and/or examinations may be undertaken at Edge Hill University.

For the time spent in university, the first half of the course will be delivered through block-weeks of face-to-face sessions. Eight block-weeks of face-to-face sessions will take place in the first year. Some reading time will be incorporated into these eight weeks to help you plan for the assessment and submission of work.

In the second half of the programme, there is a greater focus on independent learning. However, some face-to-face sessions will be planned and there will also be an attendance requirement for assessments.

Throughout the programme, you will undertake training in your place of employment, working alongside the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe and effective care to patients in the perioperative environment, on the wards and in the clinics both pre and post-operatively.

A minimum of 33.5 hours per week, for approximately 37 weeks, will be spent working in practice.The national curriculum requires a minimum of 2,200 hours over the two years in combined clinical activities in and out of the theatre environment. A minimum of 1,100 hours has to be spent in the operating theatre environment.

In addition to the above, a half-day per week will be built into your annual timetable to facilitate self-directed learning and engagement with Edge Hill University’s virtual learning environment.

How will I be assessed?

In university, assessments will take the form of essays, written case studies, viva voce (oral) examinations, written examinations and observed structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).

In practice, you will be assessed using a variety of techniques, including:

- The Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS), where you will perform a specific practical procedure that is directly observed;

- Case-based Discussion (CbD), requiring the evaluation of your performance in the management of a patient. This will provide an indication of your competence in areas such as clinical reasoning, decision-making and the application of medical knowledge in relation to patient care;

- Clinical Evaluation Exercise (CEX), where a clinical encounter with a patient is evaluated to provide an indication of your competence in skills essential for outstanding clinical care.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by tutors from the Faculty of Health and Social Care who have the experience and expertise to deliver the applied elements of this MSc via lessons, seminars and discussions. In addition, teaching will be provided by associate lecturers who are either medically qualified, or employed as qualified surgical care practitioners.

You will require a mentor who must be a consultant surgeon for the practice elements of the programme, although it is expected that you will work with a variety of staff within the surgical team. This may include, for example, other consultant surgeons, registrars and junior medical staff, in addition to other surgical care practitioners (subject to availability). The mentor(s) must be willing and available to work alongside you in the clinical arena, with real patients, supervising and assessing your clinical activities.

What are my career prospects?

On completion of this programme, you will gain a nationally recognised qualification that enables you to undertake the role of a surgical care practitioner.

You will also be able to demonstrate a number of core and specialist skills that will enable you to work effectively as part of the surgical team, work competently to practice within your field of speciality (e.g. cardiothoracic, colorectal, or trauma and orthopaedics) and to be able to function confidently, competently and autonomously.

It is designed to be readily accessible, irrespective of location or time zone, with the option of a 2-week residential summer school in London- one of the most, vibrant, dynamic and exciting cities in the world. It has a rich pedigree and is offered in collaboration between London's most established major trauma centre, the UK's lead centre for research into Complex Trauma Care and one of the oldest medical schools in the world.

Trauma is one of the world's leading killers and is responsible for a significant proportion of the global burden of disease. Improving survival and outcomes following traumatic injury has been identified as a key priority by the World Health Organization and orthopaedic injuries pose a major clinical challenge world-wide.

This two year online distance-learning course commences in October 2014 and uses novel teaching and assessment techniques. It will provide a broad and critical understanding of the most up-to-date science and practice of trauma care, with a particular focus on orthopaedic and ortho-plastic management. It combines an international expert faculty with technology-enhanced learning so that students can readily access knowledge from around the world at a time and place of their choosing. Interactive discussion forums and one to one tutor sessions help to engender an inclusive and supportive community, as well as facilitating a worldwide network of contacts with shared interests.

This is further developed by an optional 2-week residential summer school at the end of the first year in London. This incorporates simulated scenario training to complement the didactic learning and to provide practical knowledge and experience of decision-making and the safe, professional delivery of core clinical functions in the management of seriously injured patients. The second year of study entails a written dissertation on a specific area of knowledge or original research.

Degree information

Students on this MSc programme acquire essential scientific knowledge, improve their basic research skills, and are equipped with the ability to solve the musculoskeletal problems emphasised within the NHS framework. The programme emphasises the four major areas as identified by the Bone and Joint Decade - arthritis, osteoporosis, trauma and spinal disorders, and transferable skills and research methodology in orthopaedic bioengineering.

All MSc students undertake an independent research project, which can be carried out at their own institution or hospital, and culminates in a dissertation and oral examination.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of web-based taught lectures, seminars, tutorials, online research forum, group project work and workshops. Assessment is through unseen written examination, coursework, and the dissertation and viva voce. Candidates are examined in the year in which they complete the programme.

You’ll work under the direction of a clinical consultant surgeon, as well as academics and explore techniques to evaluate, develop and influence practice to make sure that everything you do maintains and enhances patient care.
You’ll develop your skills in clinical reasoning and problem solving and understand professional, ethical and legal limitations.

Course detail

The Physician Associate curriculum begins with a year of rigorous medical science, pharmacology and clinical reasoning taught by a qualified team of specialist physicians and Physicians Associates. One day per week in the first year is spent in a general practice clinical setting. The second year is comprised of six specialist clinical placements and intensive classroom teaching in advanced skills and concepts.

Upon successful completion of the Postgraduate diploma in Physician Associate Studies, you are eligible to take the National Exam for Physician Associates and be part of the Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Registry (PAMVR) which allows you to be employed by the NHS. The profession is currently working towards regulation in the UK and is overseen by the Royal College of Physicians Physician Associate Faculty.

All modules are taught using a combination of teaching methods, including lectures, problem based learning, short case review and hand on/skills practice.

Lecture, practice based learning, case review and skills application are incorporated in each module to ensure students assimilate clinical knowledge and skills in all areas.
