The MA in Transportation Design emphasises the design of niche and alternative fuelled forms of transport that explore our evolving relationship to mobility in a shrinking world. Design strategies aim to encourage free thinkers who are prepared to challenge received wisdom in the pursuit of excellence in vehicle design.

Course Overview

This programme explores the inter-relationship of form and emotion in the design and development of all forms of transport. The programme provides a platform for students to further their knowledge of the nature of vehicle design and the necessity for its application in the design of sustainable forms of transport, bridging the gap between human interaction and innovative transportation solutions. The programme provides graduates with the opportunity to develop their expertise to make them a mover effective and reflective design practitioner. An interdisciplinary approach is adopted, allowing the students the freedom to challenge conventions through cross collaborative experimentation and lateral thinking, with a goal of harnessing design ambiguity into a tangible outcome.

The programme is about pushing the envelope of Transportation Design by educating the next generation of visionaries and implementers, who will embrace, reflect and address environmental, economic and social-cultural challenges through the medium of creative dialogue.

An interdisciplinary approach allows the students the freedom to challenge conventions through cross collaborative experimentation and lateral thinking, with a goal of harnessing design ambiguity into an entrepreneurial outcome. It is our intention to promote the growing reputation of the School by embedding a culture of design led research activity closely supported by local, national and international organisations.

The MA Transportation Design programme aims to educate designers for professional practice with the modules in Part 1 focusing on design thinking and the development of the student’s creative and philosophical attributes, with Part 2 allowing the student freedom to deliver an in-depth investigation to a self-defined question. Students will explore the evolving relationship between humans and mobility in an ever shrinking world, challenging the current conventional approach and proposing new directions for getting from A to B.

The programme is a platform for students to further their knowledge and application in the design of sustainable forms of transport, bridging the gap between human interaction, innovative transportation solutions and the creative approach to new vehicle aesthetics, providing graduates with the opportunity to develop their expertise to make them a more effective and reflective design practitioner, reflecting society’s future needs.

The main modes of assessment used on this programme are; studio projects, written assignments and seminar presentations.

The Project

We are developing a revolutionary new form of transportation at the intersection of airplane design, robotics and human-centered design. The goal of this project is to design the user experience of the whole process, starting from the user deciding to book a flight to walking away from the landing area. All aspects of the process need to be considered, including payment, instructions, communication with staff, friends, and family. You will be using a user-centered design process to go through several iterations of concept development, design and evaluation. The whole process needs to offer an extremely user friendly and attractive design while managing the complexity of flight. The project will start in mid February 2018 as part of the Masters in Human Interface Technology (MHIT) program.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate for this project would have a background in user experience design. Knowledge of scenario writing, personas and user evaluation would be desirable.

Module Details

Supply chain management is a philosophy, the implementation process and the control of this process through which different entities within a supply chain aim to streamline their activities to improve the overall effectiveness and efficiency of meeting final customer requirements. A variety of different techniques will be investigated, ranging from conceptual frameworks, analytical approaches, to computer-based models.

Here are the units you will study:

Supply Chain Management: This unit enable you to develop advanced skills so that you can deal with problems of supply chain management across different products, locations, and companies. The types of problems studied in this course are encountered in industry (e.g. retail, discrete or continuous production and logistics service providers) as well as in service organisations (e.g. banks, hospitals and law firms). Managers dealing with such problems are known under various titles, including production, operations, supply (chain), inventory, purchasing, distribution or logistics managers.

Logistics Modelling: Most problems arising in the fields of logistics and supply chain management have sufficient complexity and detail that they require the use of sophisticated modelling techniques. This unit looks at two of the most commonly used methodologies for modelling and solving logistics problems: simulation and heuristic techniques. In both cases a computer package is used to assist solution. The techniques will be demonstrated with a range of case studies drawn from the field of logistics including transportation, supply chain configuration and management, warehouse design and layout, container port layout, production planning and vehicle routing.

Operations Management: This unit teaches operations management techniques that are relevant to logistics. The commonly used techniques of linear and integer programming will be taught using Microsoft Excel based methods for solution. You will look at case studies covering production planning, transportation, logistics planning and supply chain configuration. You will also be taught about locating facilities such as factories, distribution centres, cross docking centres and retail outlets. The effective scheduling of labour force and machines will be demonstrated, and current state-of-the art production planning models will be covered.

Strategic Logistics: This unit looks at the field of logistics from a strategic point of view. A number of quantitative techniques for strategic decision making such as decision analysis, multi-criteria decision analysis, data envelopment analysis and queuing theory are introduced in the context of logistics applications. The topic of strategic decisions in transportation modelling is then covered. The unit is completed by the analysis of a number of case studies relating to different applications of logistics with respect to financial, environmental, societal and economic objectives.

Project (Masters Logistics): This unit allows you to conduct research into a larger scale or challenging logistics problem. The project may be practical or theoretical and may arise either from the supervisor's research interests or from your own desire to study a particular topic or situation. Typical areas of logistics in which the project will be conducted include (but are not limited to) transportation, supply chain configuration and management, warehouse design and layout, container port layout, production planning, green logistics, facility location and vehicle routing.

This course is available with two pathways, Sustainable Highways or Sustainable Railways, this one-year, full time course keeps close to engineering practice. It aims to train engineers with the skills needed in the highway or railway infrastructure industries.

This one year, full time course has two distinct pathways; Sustainable Highways and Sustainable Railways.

  • Sustainability is more than a badge – assessing condition, assessing sustainability, diagnosis of faults, risk assessment and decision-making are pervasive features of all the engineering application topics covered by the courses, while the more fundamental topics in the MSc programme provide the tools to achieve these. Overall, this MSc programme seeks to show how advanced engineering techniques can best be applied in industry-relevant practice. Therefore it is biased more towards team-working and practice-related challenges, so as to test understanding and application skills, than towards narrow individual research studies.
  • It integrates physical understanding of the constituent materials of road and rail infrastructure and of their deterioration due to traffic and environment with modern techniques of condition assessment and asset management planning so as to extend reliable service lives, increase life-cycles and provide sustainable service for users. These threads run throughout our teaching. Tutor-led work in each semester provide a continuous thread of design development. This can lead into the summer period project. 

Both of the pathways within this MSc programme take a radical, hands-on approach by linking traditional teaching intimately to near-real life highway and railway engineering problems. Practising engineers contribute many guest lectures to show how real-life application works.

Mission & Goals

Electrical Engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and engineering electromagnetics, with particular focus on electric power systems, electrical machines and their control, electronic power converters, electrical transportation systems, electrical and electronic measurements, circuit theory and electromagnetic compatibility.
An electrical engineer has a wide background of knowledge that is necessary to address ever increasing challenges of the professional and research activities. These activities span not only in the traditional field of electricity generation, transmission and distribution, but also in the multi-faceted reality of industrial and home electrical appliances and systems, the electric systems in the transportation and health-care sectors, the electromagnetic compatibility, and the measurement and diagnosis techniques, just to mention some of the most relevant possible fields of activity.
A wide and in-depth knowledge of mathematics and physics is the essential background of graduates’ qualification in electrical engineering. Fundamental is also the background in computer science, automation and electronics applied to the different areas of electrical engineering.

Career Opportunities

There is a steady high demand for electrical engineers: in 2010, the Master of Science graduated of that year were 60, whilst the Politecnico di Milano’s Career Service received 546 requests for employment of electrical engineers. According to the Technical Report of the Evaluation Committee of Politecnico di Milano, 88% of the Master of Science graduated in Electrical Engineer in 2007, interviewed in December 2008, declared that they would have applied again to the same Electrical Engineering Programme and the 90% of the interviewed graduated declared to have a stable, full-time employment.

This track of the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering aims to form graduates with a comprehensive scientific and technological background on electrical power systems. It builds on basic disciplines (covering digital signal processing, electromagnetic compatibility and engineering electromagnetics, measurements and diagnosis techniques, power electronics and electrical drives, design of electrical machines and apparatus, etc.) and provides solid skills in the areas of electrical energy and renewable sources, electrical systems in transportation, design and automation of electrical systems. Graduates will be highly employable in the sectors of generation, transmission, distribution and utilization of electrical energy; manufacturing of electrical machines and power electronics equipment; industrial automation; design, production and operation of electrical systems for transportation (rail, automotive, aerospace and marine); companies operating on the electricity market.
