Master of Transportation Systems, SEU-Monash Joint degree

Transportation professionals require a range of advanced skills with a global perspective to develop more sustainable transport systems. To gain this technical and planning expertise in transportation systems, Southeast University and Monash University have established a joint Master’s program in Transportation Systems. This joint Master’s program is undertaken over two years and students graduate with two Master’s degrees; one from Southeast University and one from Monash University.

This first year of the program comprises two semesters of coursework units delivered in English. Units are taught at the Southeast University and Monash University Joint Graduate School in Suzhou, China. The Joint Graduate School in Suzhou is located in the newly developed Suzhou Dushu Lake Higher Education Town that is a part of the Science and Education Innovation District of Suzhou. This area has a number of Universities and Research Institutes as well as recreation and cultural facilities.

In Semester 1, students are required to take six units taught by Southeast University consisting of three core units and three elective units:

Core Units, Semester 1 (by SEU):

- Highway Design Theory and Methods
- Road Traffic Safety

Elective Units, Semester 1 (by SEU):

The second year of the program consists of students undertaking a research project supervised by academics from Southeast University as well as a mentor from industrial institutes in the Suzhou area. A research thesis is required for each student.

The MA in Transportation Design emphasises the design of niche and alternative fuelled forms of transport that explore our evolving relationship to mobility in a shrinking world. Design strategies aim to encourage free thinkers who are prepared to challenge received wisdom in the pursuit of excellence in vehicle design.

Course Overview

This programme explores the inter-relationship of form and emotion in the design and development of all forms of transport. The programme provides a platform for students to further their knowledge of the nature of vehicle design and the necessity for its application in the design of sustainable forms of transport, bridging the gap between human interaction and innovative transportation solutions. The programme provides graduates with the opportunity to develop their expertise to make them a mover effective and reflective design practitioner. An interdisciplinary approach is adopted, allowing the students the freedom to challenge conventions through cross collaborative experimentation and lateral thinking, with a goal of harnessing design ambiguity into a tangible outcome.

The programme is about pushing the envelope of Transportation Design by educating the next generation of visionaries and implementers, who will embrace, reflect and address environmental, economic and social-cultural challenges through the medium of creative dialogue.

An interdisciplinary approach allows the students the freedom to challenge conventions through cross collaborative experimentation and lateral thinking, with a goal of harnessing design ambiguity into an entrepreneurial outcome. It is our intention to promote the growing reputation of the School by embedding a culture of design led research activity closely supported by local, national and international organisations.

The MA Transportation Design programme aims to educate designers for professional practice with the modules in Part 1 focusing on design thinking and the development of the student’s creative and philosophical attributes, with Part 2 allowing the student freedom to deliver an in-depth investigation to a self-defined question. Students will explore the evolving relationship between humans and mobility in an ever shrinking world, challenging the current conventional approach and proposing new directions for getting from A to B.

The programme is a platform for students to further their knowledge and application in the design of sustainable forms of transport, bridging the gap between human interaction, innovative transportation solutions and the creative approach to new vehicle aesthetics, providing graduates with the opportunity to develop their expertise to make them a more effective and reflective design practitioner, reflecting society’s future needs.

Assessment

The main modes of assessment used on this programme are; studio projects, written assignments and seminar presentations.

Assessment at postgraduate level is reflected by your ability to reformulate and use relevant methodologies and approaches to address problematic situations that involve many interacting factors. It includes taking responsibility for planning and developing courses of action that initiate or underpin substantial change or development, as well as exercising broad autonomy and judgement. The Project

We are developing a revolutionary new form of transportation at the intersection of airplane design, robotics and human-centered design. The goal of this project is to design the user experience of the whole process, starting from the user deciding to book a flight to walking away from the landing area. All aspects of the process need to be considered, including payment, instructions, communication with staff, friends, and family. You will be using a user-centered design process to go through several iterations of concept development, design and evaluation. The whole process needs to offer an extremely user friendly and attractive design while managing the complexity of flight. The project will start in mid February 2018 as part of the Masters in Human Interface Technology (MHIT) program.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate for this project would have a background in user experience design. Knowledge of scenario writing, personas and user evaluation would be desirable.

This masters program embraces the entire design development process by researching new experiential concepts, redefining architectural solutions and redefining new standards for comfort and efficiency. Today’s design paradigm must be brought into question in order to better interpret new aesthetic and social trends.

The studio projects are organized in collaboration with major car companies, and provide a platform for students to develop and test their ideas. In particular, SPD has signed a long term educational partnership with Volkswagen Group Design involving the participation of designers from the various brands – from Audi to Lamborghini – into teaching activities.

After the initial exploration, students move into design concepts and their refinement up to both physical and digital modeling. It’s a long process that demands a high level of personal commitment and flexibility, organizational and time management skills as well as a strong attitude to teamwork.

Projects are subject to group critiques and critiques with outsider reviewers. Transportation designers thus acquire a constant spur to innovation both in form language and function, allied with the understanding of engineering and production processes.
The course lasts 15 months (from October until December) and is entirely taught in English language.

QUALIFICATION

After passing the final exam, eligible students will obtain a Master’s Degree from IULM and SPD. The Master corresponds to 60 ECTS credits.

Situated in Milan, the capital of design, Scuola Politecnica di Design pioneered design education thanks to its solid grounding and to its peculiar approach integrating different domains: ergonomics, art, perception studies, semiotics.

Today, SPD is an international laboratory for the exchange of ideas, experience and creativity in order to develop projects. Since its foundation the school has welcomed an extraordinary community of students from various countries and backgrounds.

All courses are taught in a personalized and small learning environment promoting easy contact with the faculty and the staff. Indeed, at SPD every student is followed individually by a faculty formed by designers, professionals from different fields and visiting tutors.

The masters programs offered by SPD are organized in collaboration with IULM University, and award academic degrees recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education, The University and Research MIUR, corresponding to 60 credits under the ECTS system.

The teaching method at Scuola Politecnica di Design is arranged into intensive workshops, studio classes, theoretical lectures, seminars and visits. Research work is carried out in collaboration with leading companies such as Volkswagen, Microsoft, PepsiCo, Heineken, IKEA, Artemide and Poltrona Frau Group among the others.

These projects are deveopped according to an interdisciplinary approach which is a testing ground for the student’s skills, from the concept idea to its execution.

This two-year Erasmus Mundus masters course has been developed by 4 leading European universities in partnership with 16 major international companies/organisations to respond to key challenges facing the energy sector:

the development of new energy sources and understanding their implications on power systems
identifying methods to reduce CO2 emissions by increasing energy efficiency and using cleaner energy sources
One solution explored by this masters programme is the development of electric and hybrid electric vehicles which will help reduce CO2 emissions and lessen our reliance on fossil fuels. This innovative programme also looks at electrical power systems, energy efficiency and renewable energy, and has a strong focus on innovation and sustainability issues.

Students will investigate:

the management of generation technologies, particularly renewable energy sources
grid connection interfaces including electronic power converters
transport and distribution systems, including smart grids and micro-grid concept
the impact of electrical transportation systems (EV/HEV) on the electrical network
power electronics applications for EV/HEV
