The MSc Transport and Planning is unique in offering you an opportunity to study different aspects of transport including planning, policy, operation and management, as well as other areas of urban planning.

The course will explain and demonstrate the principles and practice of transport scheme appraisal and evaluation and will enable you to understand and use statistical and modelling methods for analysing travel behaviour and a range of transport options.

You will be able to critically appraise a range of transport policies for promoting greater sustainability at national, regional and local levels, and to design transport policies at the local level that respond to the economic, social, health and environmental challenges of the society.

Distinctive features

• This course is professionally recognised by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). This means that all graduating students are exempt from the qualifying examinations of the Institute.

• Also recognised by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) as a 'specialist' masters, allowing those who have completed a three year RTPI recognised undergraduate spatial planning degree to complete the RTPI's educational requirements for membership.

• The course also meets the academic requirements for the Transport Planning Professional Qualification from the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT).

Structure

The MSc Transport and Planning is offered as a one year full-time course.

It is divided into two parts:

Part one comprises a teaching programme of core and option modules over two semesters. The core modules provide the necessary analytical, economic and planning framework, while the selection of optional modules provides the opportunity to study particular aspects of transport and related topics in depth.

Part two comprises an individual dissertation on a topic related to transport, selected in consultation with members of staff. You have discretion to select topics over a wide area, including, for students from overseas, issues arising in your country of origin.

Teaching

The modules are ‘M value.’ Acquisition of 120 credits will lead to an award of a Diploma in Transport and Planning. Currently this constitutes part one of the MSc course. Part two of the MSc is a Dissertation.

Passing both parts of the programme entitles you to the award of MSc in Transport and Planning (with Distinction if the appropriate standard attained).

The dissertation constitutes a further 60 credits, and the MSc requirement will be 180 credits at M level (with Distinction assessed according to the University’s rules for modularised Master’s programmes).

Assessment

Modules are assessed through continuous assessment (a variety of seminars, essays, project work and practical exercises) and examinations. Where required there is room for flexibility in setting alternative, comparable assessments.

Examinations take place at the end of the semester in which the module is completed. Coursework is submitted on one or more dates in the academic session.

The Transport Planning and Modelling MSc is an industry accredited course designed for practising professionals and new graduates. You will develop and apply advanced skills and understanding to the planning, modelling and operation of transport systems.

Along with developing essential skills and understanding of the planning, modelling and operation of transport systems, we aim to help you establish a responsible attitude towards the needs of society, the environment and transport safety considerations. We will teach you core skills in:

Delivery:

The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, demonstrations, computer laboratory activities and visiting lecturers from industry. There is a programme of weekly research seminars to broaden students’ horizons into areas at the forefront of knowledge and professional practice. There is a compulsory field trip to Germany (most travel and accommodation costs are included in the course fee) to see advanced and varied transport systems in practice. This include visits to innovative major transport schemes under construction. The trip aims to apply knowledge gained in the rest of the course.

Transport Operations Research Group

As one of the leading centres of transport technology in Europe, the Transport Operations Research Group (TORG) is central to key research areas including road user charging and smartcards, developing both the policy ideas and the underlying technologies. We have two central research themes:
•technologies for transport monitoring and systems management
•travel behaviour and transport planning

TORG is currently running a world-leading trial in electric vehicles and public charging infrastructure in the north east of England. This research is informing policy, international standards development and its impact on energy demand and environmental emissions. Recently TORG have also developed a low-cost wireless sensing technology called Motes, which is being deployed commercially by several local authorities to monitor traffic pollution and help develop strategies to manage traffic demand and reduce emissions. This world leading technology is being assessed for deployment in a number of high profile international cities.

Moreover, the remarkable increase in visits to and from the UK during the last ten years, growing UK trade and special events, such as the London Olympics held in 2012, all demand well-established transport systems, logistics planning and management expertise.

This programme is designed to meet the needs of home and international graduates who have not previously specialised in logistics and transport or those who are interested in expanding their knowledge and practical capabilities in this area.

The programme tries to explore the key notions of transport and logistics and discusses new approaches to the design and analysis of transport and logistics systems. In addition to the basic concepts of passenger and freight transport, and local and global logistics, the programme focuses on contemporary issues, such as e-business, transport systems modelling, and environmental issues in transport and logistics, thus ensuring it is up to date and fit for the current needs of employers.

Programme details

Transport engineering modules relate to traffic engineering and transport systems design. Transport planning modules consider policy (such as reducing car dependency), travel demand forecasting and appraisal. If you have a civil engineering background you can elect to take an optional module in transport infrastructure design as an alternative to the extended modelling and appraisal work.

The course is supported by field surveys, seminars and studio work, allowing students to experience a range of relevant computer packages and methodological approaches.

You are also required to produce a dissertation with the close supervision of an expert academic member of staff.

This course may be taken on a full-time or part-time basis. The part-time course enables candidates who would not normally be able to obtain a year’s release from employment to also study in depth and is used by some employers as part of their formal graduate training programme.

The Intelligent transport system master's programme focuses on the integration of telecommunications and information technology into vehicles and physical road infrastructure in order to achieve increased efficiency, safety and mobility while decreasing environmental impact.

The programme gives students the engineering and managerial skills required for the design, planning, analysis and management of transport systems. The focus lies on road transportation systems and public transport and the understanding of traffic congestion, air pollution and road accident prevention.

The ITS programme gives students the skills to understand and control transport systems through the use of optimisation and simulation tools and application of telecommunications and geographical information systems. Study areas also include traffic modelling and traffic simulation, as well as road safety issues and management skills. To prepare the students for management positions, language and oral and written communication courses are integrated in the programme.

During the course of the programme students will be able to specialise in areas such as traffic safety management, mobile and wireless telecommunications or mathematical modelling of traffic systems. The programme ends with a six month long degree project.

The information listed in the section entitled ‘What you will study’ is an overview of the academic content of the programme that will take the form of either core or option modules. Modules are designated as core or option in accordance with professional body requirements and internal Academic Framework review, so may be subject to change. Students will be required to undertake modules that the University designates as core and will have a choice of designated option modules.
