Course Content

Throughout the year you’ll be introduced to the key methods and approaches in translation studies in a core module. In your first semester you’ll also begin to develop interpreting skills and work on specialised translation in your chosen languages. You may continue with translation in the following semester, while you’ll build on your interpreting skills by practising simultaneous and liaison.

In either semester, you can choose optional modules on topics like public speaking and genre analysis in translation. You’ll also complete a summer project by the end of the course in September, which could be either a dissertation or two extended pieces of translation work.

All translation modules are offered INTO English, though for some languages we also offer a FROM English module. In your liaison interpreting modules (business and public service interpreting), you will train to interpreting into both of your working languages. In your simultaneous interpreting modules, you will train into you native language. We don’t offer training in any combination of languages that doesn’t include your first language.

Independent study is also an important part of the programme.

Because this is the two-language programme, you’ll train to interpret from two other languages into English. In your first semester you’ll begin to develop your interpreting skills and be able to choose from optional modules on specialised translation, or topics related to our tutors’ research interests like public speaking and genre analysis in translation.

You’ll build on this in the following semester, when you’ll practice your skills in simultaneous and consecutive and bilateral interpreting.

The master of science in health care interpretation is designed to meet the demand for nationally-certified sign language interpreters who wish to work in health care environments.

Health care interpreters work in various health care settings where hearing people and deaf or hard-of-hearing people need to interact and communicate. Interpreters may assist deaf patients and their families in understanding medical testing, treatments, and diagnoses; facilitate communication for deaf health care professionals with colleagues and patients; and/or provide interpretation for deaf individuals who are enrolled in health care-related degree programs or training courses designed to educate and prepare them for careers in health care-related professions. This unique program also prepares interpreters to work in administrative roles ensuring language access to patients in hospital settings. Successful completion of this program could lead to employment as a sign language health care interpreter and/or a language access coordinator of sign and spoken language interpreting services in one of the most important new fields of health care.

The program may be completed on a full- or part-time basis.

Designed specifically for starting or advancing a career in translation, the course is open to qualified graduates and translators seeking a professional qualification in specialised translation to enhance their career.

The programme aims to equip students with the required knowledge and skills to succeed in the industry, where the need for qualified translators able to communicate complex, specialised material has never been greater. The course has a vocational emphasis on specialist translation, focusing on areas such as law, politics, medicine, business, IT media, subtitling and website and software localisation and translation of institutional documents.

After the course

This course is an excellent preparation for career opportunities in translation agencies, EU and international institutions, multinational companies, news corporations, government bodies or work on freelance basis.

A substantial built-in part of the course is the work placement, which is an opportunity to gain hands-on professional experience with one of the many translation service providers in the UK and, whenever possible, with the UN and the EU. These placements may lead to longer-term work opportunities for our graduates.

Some of our students also go on to further advanced study (PhD).

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.

First taught in 2007, the Master’s Degree in Foreign Language Teaching (SFL/EFL) has now split into its two component specialities: English and Spanish. The resulting Master’s Degree in English Language Teaching aims to train professionals to teach English for both general and specific purposes. The degree is a combination of professional and research tracks, and it is designed for national and international graduates, with or without experience, who wish to work professionally in the field of English language teaching.

Student Profile

The Master’s Degree is designed mainly for students with a background in English studies, and such related fields as modern languages, culture and communication, translation and interpretation, or schoolteachers specializing in foreign languages. Nevertheless, the Master’s Degree is also open to people holding some sort of official university degree (bachelor’s degree, pre-Bologna bachelor’s degree or 3-year diploma), or an equivalent that may not be directly related. In the latter case, students will be required to take a bridging course (see the specific regulations).

Career opportunities

The obvious area in which the graduates from this programme can work is English language teaching at all levels. In general, language teaching provides students with multidisciplinary training in the humanities which prepares them for all sorts of activities involving the transmission of cultural knowledge. Fundamental to progression within the programme is the development of BSL competence with particular emphasis on the appropriate use of sign to understand and respond to complex information in the workplace. You will develop the advanced level of understanding and fluency required to contribute to high level discussions and explore the appropriate registers and discourse styles for presenting and delivering formal, prepared, technical information.


Key elements of the course focus on promoting understanding and competence required for undertaking the role of a BSL/English interpreter. Training and support strategies will be studied, alongside issues of the values, practices and professionalism of interpreters and their relationship with personnel in allied occupational roles. At this stage, you will also receive initial coaching in skills, strategies and models for interpreting practice.
This is a two-year part-time course for those seeking to attain professional status as British Sign Language/English Interpreters. The course is mapped with the National Registers of Communication Professionals working with Deaf and Deafblind People (NRCPD), allowing graduates to register with NRCPD. This course will enable those currently practising to improve their skills and work towards nationally recognised professional and academic qualifications. The course focuses on interpreting skills development including Level four British Sign Language (BSL) tuition.

The taught sessions occur on six two-day blocks a year (one weekend a month, every other month, commenting in January), with accessible coaching and support structures available in between teaching weekends. Students on this programme will benefit from high quality learning opportunities designed for people who wish to maintain their career while engaging in further development of their professional competence. Programme structure

The Programme is comprised of two core courses, a selection of optional courses, and an independent research project (dissertation), which provides an opportunity for you to identify an area of interest for an in-depth critical exploration.

The range of options on offer enables you to create your own Masters programme. It also allows you to work in an interdisciplinary capacity, selecting courses from across the College of Arts, according to personal interests. The Programme Convenor will work with you to construct a portfolio of courses according to your personal aims and objectives.

Teaching is almost entirely in small-group seminars, with student assessment based on presentations, essays and individual research diaries; any language classes you may take will have assessment as appropriate to that mode of learning. Core courses

Semester one

Core 1: Introduction to Comparative Literature [Comp Lit 5030] (20 credits)
◾The aim of this course is to provide a solid theoretical background in the discipline of Comparative Literature, harking back to the origins of literary study and aesthetics in Classical times and focusing largely on the developments of the 20th and 21st centuries.
◾Key terms and concepts to be introduced and discussed typically include: World Literature, Global Literature, Reception Studies, Intermedial Studies, Translation Studies, Cultural Studies, Intercultural Studies, Post-Colonial Studies, Literary Theory and Literary History.
◾The Course will provide a largely theoretical background which is meant to complement the more hand-on research skills Course (Comparative Literature in Practice) to follow in semester 2.

Semester two

Core 2: Comparative Literature in Practice (Comp Lit 5031] (20 credits)

The aim of this course is to provide:
◾A solid background in the real-life intercultural and interdisciplinary encounters, including Literary (Cultural) Reception History, and Intermedial, Interdisciplinary and (of course) Intercultural analysis, based on the work of staff and research students in the SMLC as well as students’ own forays into the current scholarship.
◾A forum for developing, in discussion with staff and other students, viable research questions, and setting about the research decided upon.
◾Skills training specific to student’s own emerging project in finding resources, keeping an annotated bibliography, writing a research plan and funding application, giving a public spoken presentation as well as defending a poster.

Selection of options is subject to approval by Programme Convener. A sample list follows below, but not all these options will be available in a given year.

Employers welcome our graduates’ abilities to 'think outside the box' in relation to cultures other than their own, as well as their ability to communicate in oral and written form in a logical, coherent, articulate and creative way.

Our graduates go into the workplace well-prepared to work in a global, international environment, as well as in any field requiring sophisticated communication skills. Some common careers include: publishing, editing, creative industries, and teaching.

The programme also provides an excellent preparation for further study in the fields of Comparative Literature and Modern Languages and Cultures.
