The MA Transformational Leadership (Teach First) is for Teach First participants who occupy or aspire to a leadership and management position at any level in an education context.

It is particuarly relevant to middle (pivotal) and senior leaders and managers, but since leadership and management issues affect everyone in education, you would also benefit if you are not in such a formal role.

The course enables you to join, and make sense of, three often separate worlds:
• Research and theory
• Policy – international, national, local and institutional
• Your own practice and ideas.

Visit the website: https://www.canterbury.ac.uk/study-here/courses/postgraduate/transformational-leadership-teach-first.aspx

Year 1

- Module 1 – Independent Self Study

This module is based on the work within the Teach First Leadership Development Programme strands: Leading Learning, Leading People and Leading Self. The module assessment has two components.

Making the links:

Led by Christ Church tutors, you willl consider the following dimensions to the Masters programme, and in particular, the implications for Module 1 from the Leadership Development Programme:

• Reading and writing at Masters level with a view to creating frameworks for the two assignments
• Critical reading for self¬critical writing
• Finding a focus
• Studying independently
• Time management.

In addition to tutor¬led teaching, Action Learning Sets and Critical Friendship groups will be established. These will provide intensive, supportive critical perspectives to enhance professional development and leadership throughout the course, and will be employed in Module 1 to make the links between the Leadership Development Programme, the PGCE and the Independent Study.

- Module 2 – Transformational Leadership for Communities and Schools

Making the links:

Drawing upon learning from the PGCE, the Leadership Development Programme and the work underway on the Independent Study, you will be supported in engaging critically with the following themes:

• Leading and managing change for improvement
• Theories and practice of transformational leadership at school and community level
• Leadership challenges in the context of Kent and Medway
• Leading and managing effective teams to make a difference to schools and communities
• Understanding the impact of socio¬economic factors on learning.

Year 2

- Module 3 – Research Methods

Tutors will lead the research methods course, supporting you in enhancing your skills of review, analysis, critical reflection, interrogation and critical interpretation of data. Reflexivity will be revisited and positionality introduced in this module.

Action Learning Sets and Critical Friendship groups will provide the structure for you to co-construct your research proposals using frameworks provided within the module and to articulate them for approval.

- Module 4 – Dissertation (15,000 – 18,000 words)

You will be supported in researching and writing your dissertations in different ways:
• One-to-one support from a University supervisor
• Support in Critical Friendship groups through the VLE

In addition, you are invited to attend the postgraduate writing weekends. These well-established weekends are optional and provide you with a supportive space within which to think, discuss and write, making intensive use of University library facilities with tutor guidance and peer support.

Termly postgraduate conferences enable you to engage in discussion and share learning with other practitioner researchers; this includes conferences focusing specifically on research and writing along with a range of themes in education, learning and leadership.

The MA programme has been designed to achieve a close connection between the learning environment and the workplace. Emphasis is placed on face to face delivery of the programme with student participation and experience being central to the facilitation of learning and teaching. The use of professional specialists to provide input where required is also a key feature of the learning approach.

The programme examines the practice of leadership and management informed by an analysis of wider management theory, in a changing organisational context.

You will attend our Bognor Regis campus for 1 day per month for 10 months in the first 2 years. The final year is more flexible and focuses on producing a dissertation topic supported by your tutors. We predominantly use small group learning and Action Learning Sets to deliver the content of the programme. Assessment is via assignment/presentations and report completion.

You will create a detailed, transformational Personal Development Plan in your first year alongside a study into ‘Managing a Department’. In the second year you will study Strategic Leadership and High Performance Team Management. In the final year you will attend research methods workshops, decide on a specific area to investigate and report on what is relevant to you, your career or your employer.

Contemplating taking on a masters-level programme whilst maintaining a demanding full-time position and a young family is a scary thought. This worry, however, was quickly removed when starting on the University of Chichester’s part-time MA in Leadership and Management. It would appear to me that this programme is specifically designed for people in my situation. The self-directed teaching style, complemented with monthly taught sessions, creates the excellent balance to fit post-graduate study into an already busy schedule.

The flexibility of course content and focus on work-based learning has allowed me to bring my studies into the workplace and has already helped to deepen my understanding of my role as a manager. Learning and sharing with others professionals seeking to also broaden their perception of management practice is a real asset and allows for further insight through supportive challenges and encouragement.

I would certainly recommend this course to others wishing to develop themselves as a leader, to bridge the gap between management theory and practice and to deepen their understanding of the role they play in their respective teams."

Vito Mastrolonardo, Head of Support & Customer Experience:

"There are a number of organisational developments where I work and with development comes change and opportunity. I want to put myself in the best place possible for the career developments that may arise.

Furthering my education in a practical and hands on way looked like the best option. And that is exactly what the MA Leadership and Management does.

I had a degree in Business Studies and the next logical progression route was a professional qualification or a masters level degree. However a Masters or MBA appear on the face of it very expensive and require a major time commitment. That is, until I found the University of Chichester MA in Leadership and Management. It is still a long term commitment, it still has a commitment to work hard and be very self-directed but, it is over three years. One day a month. And I can jump off at the end of each of those three years with a post graduate qualification.

What’s more, it was a ‘hands on’ course. All the assignments must be relevant and applicable to your job. This is even better. I need to manage a department, I have a team to lead, what better than to directly and immediately apply that knowledge.

I’m now 5 months in to the programme. 5 sessions that have included developing my knowledge in creating vision, objectives, strategy and change management. In additional to the directed learning, action learning sets that have been invaluable in helping me to understand myself and question what we have learnt in a facilitated, confidential group environment.

I am already applying my new found knowledge. I need to create a new strategy for my department and this has become the focus of one of my assignments. My personal journey has seen me read a number of contrasting articles on strategy and leadership, encouraging me to critically evaluate my thinking and the thinking of others. This has been especially useful when reading journals and books on leadership and applying this critical thinking to the workplace.

This is the course for me. This was the way for me to cement my knowledge in leadership and management and how to develop it further. It gives me the opportunity to advance my learning and knowledge in a practical and applied way to my work. It allows me the valuable opportunity to work on assignments during my working day as they directly relate to the work that I am currently doing. I am now on a respected, powerful journey to becoming a Master Leadership and Management enabling me to develop my career and satisfying my thirst for personal development."

This includes making sense of the organisation as a whole and in your every day practice acting with relational sensibility, poise and practical wisdom.

You will become an agent for change, development and organisational learning who contributes to your organisation or your clients organisation from different systemic consultancy positions, by becoming a reflexive learner yourself, by critically and appreciatively engaging in the process of organisational development and change, and by designing, facilitating and evaluating development interventions to achieve organisational aims.

You will form an identity as a systemic organisational research practitioner with your own research experience and contribution to ethical organisational practice through inquiry and a critical appreciation of different forms of inquiry as instrumental to the emergence of an organisation and the people in it. This will be paramount to taking responsibility for the design and conduct of further research and research programmes and the promotion of ethical organisational practice through forms of inquiry.

Possibilities for further study: Some graduates decide to expand and deepen their systemic insight and practice through a Professional Doctorate in Systemic Practice. Other graduates may want to apply and amalgamate their systemic skills and insight in studying subject matters related to their field of practice e.g. human resource management, business or public administration, education, social work, project management and so on.

Running throughout our program is the Leadership stream. This begins during the Immersion phase with a series of self-assessment tools – including a 360° leadership review by your peers.

The stream is complemented by guest speakers sharing their personal leadership stories during the program, and culminates in Module 6 which focuses on individual self-awareness, as well as actions and values necessary to lead a globally responsible organisation. The stream links together academic concepts of organisational behaviour, human resource management and leadership, with personal and career development planning.

Our approach to leadership development is customised to executives, using the research knowledge of our professors, professional leadership coaches, and the experience and resources of your classmates.

Through the Leadership stream you will transform your understanding of leadership, by analysing it from a variety of angles including your personal leadership style, the dynamics of team leadership, and the particular challenges of leading organisations effectively.

TRIUM capstone projects

The Capstone Project sits at the heart of TRIUM. It is an opportunity to apply your program learning to your current business environment, a start-up or a social cause.

The Capstone Project brings your coursework to life in a potentially life-changing way. As part of a team you will choose a project category and develop a business idea from inception to launch, leveraging the resources of our program and faculty, your classmates and alumni connections.

The Capstone Project offers you the intellectual space, resources and mandate to strike out in a new and innovative direction: the opportunity to take your vision, expertise and experience, and make something new, by identifying a niche and creating a business to fill it. And, whether your interest in our program is to further your career in a major corporation, or give you the confidence to set out on your own, your participation in the project will enable you to do so in ways you may never have considered before.

Management and Leadership (Aggregate Industries)

This bespoke programme has been developed for Aggregate Industries to meet the needs of managers across the industry. This is a fully integrated postgraduate programme allowing delegates to progress from Diploma to MSc.

See the website http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/sbe/executive-education/programmes/accredited/aggregate/

About the Programme

The postgraduate programme in Management and Leadership (Aggregate Industries) is specifically designed for experienced managers in Aggregate Industries seeking to develop practical skills whilst working towards a recognised university award.

The course covers a wide range of areas, including finance, marketing, leadership and managing people. At each stage of the programme you will be asked to draw on your work experience and to apply your learning within your own organisational context:
- Learning objectives will reflect the needs of today’s business environment, developing skills and knowledge immediately relevant to you and your workplace.
- Programme assessments require delegates to relate each topic to their experience, thereby developing skills in practically relevant ways.

Throughout the programme both student and organisation will benefit from a demonstrable return on investment back in the workplace.

Structure

In response to the needs of busy managers, the programme is offered on a part-time basis. The minimum period of study for the award of MSc is thirty calendar months. The minimum period of study for the award of Postgraduate Diploma is eighteen months.

Delivery

Modules are taught as 2-day or 4-day workshops scheduled in consultation with our client.

Learning methods are tailored to meet participants’ needs, including a combination of:
- short inputs
- pair and group work
- case studies
- distance learning
- work-based assignments and projects

The MSc element of the programme will be over a 12 month period and will require delegates to attend an initial taught session covering research methods and project design which is delivered at Loughborough University. Participants will then be expected to design, implement and write-up a research project exploring a topic of their own choice.

Assessment

There are no exams for this programme.

Each module is assessed through coursework which may include in-class group presentations, in-class tests and individual coursework assignments. Our coursework assignments require the student to read and research the topic of the module to address a question that is based within a work environment. All modules require the student to draw on their own work experience and/or their current work situation.

Content

Each programme starts with an induction event where participants will review and improve their learning, researching and writing skills. Following this, the modules address the fundamentals of management and business competitiveness.

The content of assessments addresses real work examples within past and current experience.

For the MSc project a topic to address a problem directly impacting on the participant’s work area is agreed with the University and the employer. An integral part of that project will be the requirement to demonstrate the benefits to the organisation and to the participant’s own learning.

Understanding the nature of consciousness has been described as the primary challenge facing us today. By combining the study of consciousness with recent developments in the psychology of spirituality, this MSc is distinctive in encouraging students to explore the further reaches of human experience.

The MSc will appeal to those who share our vision that three core features are central to the study of consciousness and the human mind:

• Connectedness to a larger scale of being
• Recognition of the sacred
• Sense of quest - that some form of spiritual journey lies at the core of human experience.

The paradigm shift underpinning this course has had significant impact in professional arenas, with increasing recognition of spiritual values in the workplace, the role of transformational leadership, and the importance of transpersonal experience in working towards realisation of our potential.

The masters provides an intellectually-challenging programme of study including:

• The nature of consciousness and its relation to the brain
• The psychology of self and higher states of being
• Creativity and transformation
• Psychological aspects of spiritual and mystical practices
• Transpersonal approaches to therapy
• The dialogue between science and mysticism

Experiential approaches to learning are also used to enable you to integrate insights from the course into your own life journeys.

This Masters operates fully online, enabling you to take control of the timing and pace of your study. There are no external workshops or study days during this programme, enabling us to offer this programme at a competitive rate.
