Who is it for?

The MSc Business Economics / International Business Economics is for students who want to apply economics to real-world issues. From transfer pricing, to the complexity of financial markets and the pros and cons of EU membership, you will need to be strong at statistics and quantitative methods to get to grips with the material that makes up the core modules. The MSc is designed to give you the tools to apply your knowledge, so we expect you to be downloading the free FT app and getting on top of current issues from the second you start.

Objectives

On the MSc Business Economics / International Business Economics you won’t be deriving equations. Instead, we use them to apply economics to current business issues.

The programme has been designed to equip students with a wealth of resources combining data banks from City’s Cass Business School and School of Arts and Social Sciences. This means you have access to everything from Datastream, Bloomberg and Bankscope, to Morning Star and Orbis.

MSc Business Economics / International Business Economics maximises City’s central London location. With high-profile guest lecturers such as Jim O’Neill, former Chief Economist from Goldman Sachs, you gain insight straight from the City studying in the heart of "the world's biggest financial centre" (Economist, 2012.)

Teaching and learning

The course is taught through a series of lectures (which are also available as online resources), seminars, student presentations and interactive group work. Computer laboratory teaching gives you practical experience using software packages to develop statistical and econometric skills that are formatively assessed by computer-based exercises.

You also undertake a research project or economics literature survey on a subject that is of interest to you. This must cover a current topic that is within the remit of Business Economics or International Business Economics.

Pre-sessionals

Pre-sessional activities covering statistics, mathematics, and Stata run in September before the start of term. These are available for all students who secure a place on the MSc International Business Economics and MSc Business Economics courses. Pre-sessionals are included in your degree fee and are designed to prepare you for the course. We therefore strongly encourage you to make every effort to attend. Dates of the sessions for 2018 are TBC.

Assessment

You are assessed by coursework and examination. Your overall degree result is based on your performance in the taught modules and the dissertation.

Modules

The core content is covered in the first term, making this a programme with a lot of choice. There is an economics and econometrics focus, but you also can study topics including the economics of micro-finance, e-commerce, asset pricing and the history of economic thought.

If you choose to study MSc International Business Economics you will need to study the International Business Economics elective in the second term, and your research project has to cover more than one country. So, for example, you could not focus on a single-country subject such as privatisation in the UK.

The complex financial times we live in demand greater modelling techniques and a deeper understanding of financial data. The Master in Finance at the Barcelona GSE is designed to meet these challenges, as it is a comprehensive program that covers all the important areas of finance and prepares you for the most demanding jobs in banking, consulting and asset management.

This program is unique because it offers better training on quantitative topics than most masters in finance, and has a broader focus than the typical master in quantitative finance.

Our graduates excel in the ability to design and implement complex financial models; understand the theory and bring it to the data. They outclass their peers with a more qualitative background (like an MBA), because they can work in a wider range of positions (risk management, derivatives trading, venture capital, wealth management, etc.). At the same time, our graduates are more versatile than students with a pure quantitative background, because they can reach beyond purely technical jobs.

Degree

The degree requires the successful completion of 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits of graduate courses (6 credits are equivalent to a 40 hour course), some compulsory and some elective. The students' final program must be discussed with and approved by the Master Director.

A wide range of regulatory and transactional areas are covered including, monetary law, banking law, financial regulation, central banking, securities law, secured transactions, corporate finance and M&As, insolvency cross-border insolvency, electronic banking, financing of developing economies, EU financial law and business ethics. Our academics are engaged in current banking and finance policy making and legal regulatory reforms. It is designed to equip lawyers for the substantive, procedural and technical aspects of tax practice, and to expand and deepen the knowledge base of established practitioners, but no previous knowledge of taxation is required. Modules cover Business Taxation, International Taxation, EU Tax Law, VAT, Intellectual Property taxation, Taxation Principles and Policy and US Taxation. They are taught by leading academic and practitioners, with a strong practical emphasis.

Globally, financial tools, products and software are becoming increasingly complex and sophisticated. There's a demand for market-aware graduates who can demonstrate an understanding of mathematical models used in these products.

The MSc in Quantitative Finance – an innovative cross-faculty alliance between the Strathclyde Business School and the Faculty of Science – has been developed to address this need. The course has been designed so that students who have a strong aptitude for mathematics, statistics and computing but who have not studied these topics in detail in their first degree can learn the necessary skills to move into the financial industry.

This masters course will prepare you for a career in financial engineering and risk management. Careers include roles as a hedge fund manager or financial analyst.

You’ll gain:

  • a practical understanding of numerical methods in finance
  • an introduction to programming for financial applications

What you’ll study

Work placement

You may be able to undertake an industrial based MSc project. This takes place in the third semester of the course between June and September. The placement can be based in the UK or in another country and are typically paid internships.

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics has teaching rooms which provide you with access to modern teaching equipment and access to University computing laboratories with all necessary software available.

This unique programme provides numerate graduates with the requisite expertise for the development of a professional career in the profitable and intellectually exciting triangle formed by mathematics, technology and finance.

Financial institutions rely on a functional blend of Mathematics, Technology and Finance to develop, enhance and sustain their competitive edge. The financial industry is undergoing a second wave of technological transformation related in particular to: the establishment of electronic trading platforms; improved risk management and pricing accuracy; the high performance computing implications of expanding regulatory requirements.

As a result there is increasing demand for numerate and technologically capable personnel from a wide range of top employers including investment banks, hedge funds, financial software companies, brokerage firms and consultancy firms. Other business lines are now developing similar paradigms where numerate, technologically able personnel are part of business innovation and decision-making.

The Financial Computing MSc is run jointly by the School of Mathematical Sciences and the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science. It is aimed at science and engineering graduates with mathematical exposure and some experience in computer programming. The content of the programme is a combination of technology and financial mathematics. It contains modules related to up-to-the-minute industry challenges such as high performance and GPU development.

Programme Outline

The study programme consists of four compulsory and four elective modules. The modules offered by the School of Mathematical Sciences will provide a solid understanding of the principles of mathematical finance. The modules offered within the Schools of Electronic Engineering and Computer Sciences will focus on key aspects of technological implementation.

Full time Study

You will study eight modules in total with an even split across semesters one and two. You will complete a 10,000 word dissertation/research project during semester three.

Full time Study with Industrial Experience

You will study eight modules in total with an even split across semesters one and two. You will complete a 10,000 word dissertation/research project during semester three. Expert staff will support the arrangement of your industrial placement, which will be carried out in the second year of your programme and assessed through the completion of the Industrial Placement Project.

The industrial placement takes place from the September following the taught part of the MSc and is for a maximum of 12 months. It is a student's responsibility to secure their own placement, but the EECS Placement Team will provide support. The Placement Team source and promote suitable opportunities, assist with applications, and with interview preparation.

The industrial placement consists of 8-12 months spent working with an appropriate employer in a role that relates directly to your field of study. The placement is currently undertaken after you have completed and passed the taught component of the degree and submitted your MSc project. The placement will provide you with the opportunity to apply the key technical knowledge and skills that you have learnt in your taught modules, and will enable you to gain a better understanding of your own abilities, aptitudes, attitudes and employment potential. The module is only open to students enrolled on a programme of study with integrated placement.

In the event that you are unable to secure a placement we will transfer you onto the 1 year FT taught programme without the Industrial Experience. This change will also apply to any student visa you hold at the time.

Part time Study

Your programme is delivered across two academic years. You will study four modules in each year of the programme, registering upon two modules per semester to balance your workload.

Our modules are assessed by a mixture of in-term assessment and final examinations. Examinations are held between late April and early June. Dissertations are evaluated in September. Successful completion of the MSc programme will result in the award of the MSc Financial Computing (possibly with Merit or with Distinction).

Each MSc Financial Computing student is required to complete a 60 credit project dissertation. A typical MSc project dissertation consists of about 30 word-processed pages (10,000 words), securely bound, covering a specific research-level topic in financial computing, usually requiring the student to understand, explain and elaborate on results from one or more journal articles and possibly to implement some industry quality code.

Construction Contract and Disputes

Examine the legal and contractual issues involved with projects; focusing on the critical appraisal and application of contract administration for construction projects. This includes the analysis and evaluation of approaches to the selection of appropriate procurement strategies for international construction projects. The module also considers how failures have occurred in respect to conflict in construction and proceeds to discuss methods for the management of conflict and the means of resolving disputes, from an international perspective.

Construction Economics and Procurement

Gain a full conceptual understanding of the economics of the construction industry. The module also focuses on the interaction between the national economy and the construction sector including the forecasting of construction demand. It will also cover the microeconomic issues including supply chain management.

Construction Financial Management

Provides an understanding of financial management within the wider construction industry and how this can be affected through cyclical trends. All aspects of the financial management of construction projects are considered, with particular attention paid to capital investment decisions and cash flow management.

Development and Project Economics

The management of projects from a commercial perspective, i.e. the economic appraisal of projects.

Quantification and Costing of Works

Core competencies for the quantity surveyor. The module examines the measurement and quantification of construction works using a range of measurement methods. It also examines estimating and pricing methods of construction works based upon a variety of information.

Risk and Value Management

The management of risk on international construction projects including methodologies for risk identification, analysis, acceptance and transfer - vital elements to the success of a project - using hypothetical and live projects to place the topic in context.

Sustainable Design and Construction

Core construction technology competencies related to sustainability for the quantity surveyor. Providing students with knowledge and understanding of the principles of sustainable design and construction; and introduces the main requirements, technologies, tools, methods, processes and systems required to develop a sustainable building.

International Construction Project Finance

The financial management from bid preparation to contract financing, with particular emphasis on capital investment decisions and cash flow management, all within the context of international construction projects.

Project Management

Project management concepts, the roles and responsibilities of project managers and organisational structures within which project management operates.

Masters Dissertation

An opportunity to undertake an in-depth investigation, with a strong emphasis on originality and analysis.

Assessment methods

Combination of exams, coursework, online discussions and a presentation. The university has a policy of using the Blackboard web-based virtual learning environment to complement face-to-face tuition.

Distance learning access

Quantity surveying students taking the distance learning option require their own computer and internet access. A high level of technical knowledge is not required, however you should be comfortable using a word processor package, email and have some experience of searching the web.

All EIT Digital Master School programmes follow the same scheme:

  • Students study one year at an ‘entry’ university and one year at an ‘exit’ university in two of EIT Digital’s hot spots around Europe.
  • Upon completion, graduates receive degrees from the two universities and a certificate awarded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology.
  • The first year is similar at all entry points with basic courses to lay the foundation for the chosen technical programme focus. Some elective courses may also be chosen. At the same time, students are introduced to business and management. During the second semester, a design project is combined with business development exercises. These teach how to turn technology into business and how to present a convincing business plan.
  • In between the first year and the second year, a summer school addresses business opportunities within a socially relevant theme.
  • The second year offers a specialisation and a graduation project. The gradation project includes an internship at a company or a research institute and results in a Master thesis with a strong innovation and entrepreneurship dimension.

About EIT Digital Master School

EIT Digital Master School offers two-year, European Masters in computer science and information technology, with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. Students study two years in two leading European universities. They earn two Masters degrees from those universities together with a certificate awarded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). Students enjoy an array of benefits which includes European mobility, a three-day business challenge, a two-week Summer School, an internship and access to the EIT Digital community. Upon graduation, students are equipped with the tools to become digital innovators.

Scholarship:

·        European citizen: No tuition fees. Up to 750 Euros monthly allowance

·        Non-European citizen: tuition fee waiver of up to 50% and 750 Euros monthly allowance

Application deadline to begin studying in September 2018:

·        15 April 2018 (Open to EU/EEA/CH citizens/ Non-EU citizens*.)

*Please note that this application period is not recommended for applicants who require a visa due to time constraints. If you require a visa to study in an EU country, we recommend you delay your application to November 2018 when the application portal opens again, to start in Autumn 2019.
