This master programme equips you with the knowledge and skills to study human behaviour in traffic, and to conceive of interventions that keep people mobile.

Reduced mobility in old age results in a significant increase in the cost to society, not only because of the need for hired transport but also because of secondary consequences, like less social integration, lower satisfaction with life, and reduced mental agility, which can then lead to tertiary consequences like isolation and depression.

This programme makes you an expert in this field. Different disciplines cover the broad theme of mobility and offer courses that examine social perspectives, that consider how a decline in the ability to process information affects mobility, and that focus on the clinical effects of ageing (e.g. dementia). A practical course element provides hands-on training using state-of-the-art assessment techniques and instruments. The Intelligent transport system master's programme focuses on the integration of telecommunications and information technology into vehicles and physical road infrastructure in order to achieve increased efficiency, safety and mobility while decreasing environmental impact.

The programme gives students the engineering and managerial skills required for the design, planning, analysis and management of transport systems. The focus lies on road transportation systems and public transport and the understanding of traffic congestion, air pollution and road accident prevention.

The ITS programme gives students the skills to understand and control transport systems through the use of optimisation and simulation tools and application of telecommunications and geographical information systems. Study areas also include traffic modelling and traffic simulation, as well as road safety issues and management skills. To prepare the students for management positions, language and oral and written communication courses are integrated in the programme.

During the course of the programme students will be able to specialise in areas such as traffic safety management, mobile and wireless telecommunications or mathematical modelling of traffic systems. The programme ends with a six month long degree project.

ITS students at Linköping University will be at the frontline of Swedish ITS research as Linköping University is the coordinating university of the Swedish National Postgraduate School of ITS. The university is also a member of ITS-EduNet, the network for Training and Education on Intelligent Transport Systems.

-Part II: Attendance at City (or other locations) for the module over three days.
-Part III: Examinations are held on the third day of the core modules.
-Part IV: Coursework is due within six weeks from the last day of the module.

We explore air transport management from a broad perspective so you will be exposed to areas as diverse as human resources, regulation, and crisis management. The academic framework has been created by the industry for the industry. There is a high degree of flexibility in terms of sequence and time frame to suit students working in airlines, air traffic control, air forces and other organisations.

Students also take on a project/dissertation in an air transport related subject, which is usually completed within six to twelve months. From developing new safety measures to social media marketing in the aviation world, students choose their own research focus and often use the project as a way into a new career. Students who choose note to do the project, or are unable to complete the programme with the five years can receive a Postgraduate Certificate pending Programme Director approval.

We cover the full spectrum of a Master of Science education, adding Management modules for the future career in aviation. The Transport Planning and Modelling MSc is an industry accredited course designed for practising professionals and new graduates. You will develop and apply advanced skills and understanding to the planning, modelling and operation of transport systems.

Along with developing essential skills and understanding of the planning, modelling and operation of transport systems, we aim to help you establish a responsible attitude towards the needs of society, the environment and transport safety considerations. We will teach you core skills in:

Delivery:

The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, demonstrations, computer laboratory activities and visiting lecturers from industry. There is a programme of weekly research seminars to broaden students’ horizons into areas at the forefront of knowledge and professional practice. There is a compulsory field trip to Germany (most travel and accommodation costs are included in the course fee) to see advanced and varied transport systems in practice. This include visits to innovative major transport schemes under construction. The trip aims to apply knowledge gained in the rest of the course.

Transport Operations Research Group

As one of the leading centres of transport technology in Europe, the Transport Operations Research Group (TORG) is central to key research areas including road user charging and smartcards, developing both the policy ideas and the underlying technologies. We have two central research themes:
•technologies for transport monitoring and systems management
•travel behaviour and transport planning

TORG is currently running a world-leading trial in electric vehicles and public charging infrastructure in the north east of England. This research is informing policy, international standards development and its impact on energy demand and environmental emissions. Recently TORG have also developed a low-cost wireless sensing technology called Motes, which is being deployed commercially by several local authorities to monitor traffic pollution and help develop strategies to manage traffic demand and reduce emissions. This world leading technology is being assessed for deployment in a number of high profile international cities.

Bristol is the home of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and an exciting place to study transport and engineering. The city has some interesting and complex transport problems of its own, and plans to tackle them include a bus rapid transit network, continuing developments to cycling networks as the country's first Cycling City, and experimental closures of the city centre to motor traffic on Sundays. Our close links with local authorities in the area means we were commissioned to evaluate Bristol's Local Sustainable Transport Fund project.

Why do most Park and Ride schemes cause an increase in traffic? Why do people living in high-density housing make fewer journeys than people in suburbs, yet cause more traffic congestion? Does an increase in traffic inevitably increase collision and injury rates? These are just some of the questions posed by our researchers in the Centre for Transport and Society at UWE Bristol.

Placements

A feature of this course is the potential for a work placement. This gives you the chance to gain valuable experience in practice and gain a competitive edge over graduates from other courses. If you choose to, we will help you find a suitable placement with an employer based in the area, for a few weeks in the summer after the end of teaching and assessment. The placement (which may be unpaid) will involve a project designed to address an employer's genuine needs. Your experience and findings will contribute to your project-based dissertation.

This course provides the necessary academic background to begin or enhance your career in transport planning.

Bristol is the home of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and an exciting place to study transport. The city has some interesting and complex transport problems, and plans to tackle them include a bus rapid transit network, continuing developments to cycling networks as the country's first Cycling City, and experimental closures of the city centre to motor traffic. We have close links with local authorities in the area, and have been commissioned to evaluate Bristol's Local Sustainable Transport Fund project.

Why do most Park and Ride schemes cause an increase in overall traffic? Why do people living in high-density housing make fewer journeys than people in suburbs, yet cause more traffic congestion? Does an increase in traffic inevitably equal increased collision and injury rates? These are just some of the questions posed by researchers from the Centre for Transport and Society at UWE Bristol.

MSc Transport Planningdraws on our strong links with employers, and offers the potential for a summer work placement linked to your dissertation.

Throughout the course, you will acquire the knowledge and skills transport planning employers look for in potential employees. You will also focus on how spatial planning interacts with transport needs and transport systems, and we encourage you to be open to new ideas and to critically examine established practices.

All of our teaching staff are engaged in research and consultancy, and often advise national and local government.

We also have guest lectures from professional practitioners, which give you valuable insights into the latest developments in practice.

Transport planners must be numerate. If you lack confidence in this area, we can provide guidance and assistance for the mathematical content of the course.

Placements

A feature of this course is the potential for a work placement. This gives you the chance to gain valuable experience in practice and a competitive edge over graduates from other courses. If you choose to, we will help you to find a suitable placement with an employer based in the area, for a few weeks in the summer after the end of teaching and assessment. The placement (which may or may not be unpaid) will involve a project designed to address an employer's genuine need. Your experience and findings will contribute to your project-based dissertation.

Assessment is through coursework presentations and examinations.

Opportunities in transport planning are growing. UWE Bristol's transport graduates have an excellent reputation, and several have since secured senior positions around the region and further afield.

For many of our students, the highlight of their year is the European Field Trip. This week-long trip which takes place after the summer exams and has been a fixture in the ITS calendar since 1987. Research environment

The Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) was established as the UK’s first multi-disciplinary transport department, and we continue to lead the field with our research.

Our economics research has been successful in bridging the interface between academia and industry. For example, CQC (Cost, Quality, Customer) Efficiency Network initiative which is based at ITS and a joint venture between the National Highways & Transport Network (NHT) and the University of Leeds. The CQC Efficiency Network offers local authorities throughout Britain the ability to quantify the scope for cost savings in the delivery of highway services and to identify better practises.

Other Study Options

This programme is available part time, allowing you to combine study with other commitments. You can work to fund your studies, or gain a new qualification without giving up an existing job. We aim to be flexible in helping you to put together a part-time course structure that meets your academic goals while recognising the constraints on your study time.

Learning and teaching

Postgraduate study involves a range of teaching methods, supported by independent learning. In addition to the traditional lecture and seminar formats, you’ll experience a blend of workshops, computer exercises, practical sessions, directed reading, reflective journal, student-led discussions, fieldwork and tutorials.

Assessment

Assessment is equally varied and can include coursework essays, case-study reports, group assignments, posters, presentations and exams.

Field trips

Transport at ITS is an applied subject. We offer plenty of opportunities for students to experience transport systems in action, both within the UK and Europe, allowing you to meet and hear directly from transport professionals and see what you’ve learned in practice.

For many of our students, the highlight of their year is the European Field Trip. This week-long trip which takes place after the summer exams and has been a fixture in the ITS calendar since 1987. The itinerary varies from year to year, but has often included Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany.

Stops en-route have included Pedestrian Centres and Docklands Transport in Rotterdam; Cycle and Traffic Calming Facilities in Delft; the Motorway Traffic Control Centre in Amsterdam; the Guided Bus System in Essen; the Wuppertal Monorail; Town Planning features in Duisburg and Dusseldorf; research talks at the University of Hasselt, and visit to the Brussels Metro.

Links with industry

ITS has close working relationships with a number of organisations and many employers visit ITS each year to interview our students for graduate schemes and other vacancies. ITS also regularly circulates specific job vacancies to students.

Our students are highly sought after and have a good reputation with transport consultants, and may receive a job offer before or shortly after graduation.

The organisations that have advertised and/or recruited directly from ITS include Arup, Mott MacDonald, AECOM, Capita, Transpennine Express, Transport for London, Pell Frischmann, Leigh Fisher, JMP, Amey and Hyder among many others.
