The MSc Chinese Herbal Medicine extends your acupuncture practice into the other of the major modalities of Chinese medicine. It is a theoretical and clinical professional entry-training. You will develop your diagnostic and case formulation skills and also learn the materia medica and formulae of Chinese herbal medicine. Phytochemistry and pharmacokinetics are integrated into the understanding of the energetic interactions of herbs. Extensive practice with patients will take place in our on-site teaching clinic where theory is deconstructed and applied. Working in the dispensary with raw herbs will develop your kinaesthetic skills to deepen understanding. The aim is that you learn how to modify classic formulae to create new formulae which address complex patterns of illness.

This course contextualises Chinese medicine within its historical roots, and grounds it in the legal, ethical and inter-professional framework of the UK.

"The University of Westminster MSc CHM is accredited (approved) by the European Herbal and Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association which accredits courses on behalf of all EHTPA Professional Associations, including the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine. This enables graduates from the MSc CHM to apply for membership of the RCHM. The EHTPA system of accreditation was endorsed by, and included in, the initial Steering Group Report to Government which recommended that a statutory register for herbal medicine practitioners be established".

However, traditional practice also utilises other techniques such as moxibustion and cupping. The Chinese word for acupuncture is zhenjiu; literally needle and moxibustion. It originated In China around three thousand years ago and soon spread to other countries in Asia such as Japan and Korea. Acupuncture is now widely used around the world.

This course provides a strong foundation in the theory and application of acupuncture, as well as extensive clinical experience and a grounding in Chinese language and culture. Over the four year course, you'll also gain a thorough understanding of western bio-medical sciences and the skills to be a reflective and professional practitioner. Research will play an important role in the future development of the profession of acupuncture and this programme is designed to equip you with excellent research skills.

Modules covering Chinese medicine, language and culture will be taught by experienced lecturers from China. You'll benefit from this wealth of clinical experience and extensive knowledge of the various traditions and historical developments in Chinese medicine. You'll also learn from practitioners based in the UK to gain a more complete picture and understanding of the skills required to be a professional acupuncturist in the West.

Clinical experience is central to understanding and good practice of acupuncture. You'll train throughout the course at our teaching clinic. You'll also undertake an extended clinical placement in a Chinese hospital and study at our partner institution the Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine.

All this combined will help you to develop the skills to be a reflective and professional acupuncturist.

You will focus on both the evaluation of health issues to be expected in the field and the planning and preparation phase for any remote or wilderness activity. Key to the programme is that you learn to recognise and evaluate the unique ethical, professional and legal challenges of delivering medical care in challenging environments. The programme will develop in you, the skills necessary to evaluate research literature, and manage the challenge of implementing health interventions where evidence may be weak or conflicting.

A key part of the programme are the short residential courses designed to provide the challenge of learning in an unfamiliar environment and relying on the collaboration and support of the other participants.

Expert tutors will facilitate group discussions and project work and provide support for independent learning. Assessments are designed to provide opportunities for personal reflection, critical appraisal, evaluation and analysis to demonstrate the knowledge and skills gained throughout the programme.

Course detail

As the average age of parents increases, the call for increasingly novel treatments to aid reproduction is similarly on the increase. In the UK around 1-2% of all babies are born through IVF. Reproductive medicine generally, and IVF in particular, is an area in which the UK is world-leading.

Purpose

This course will aim to answer fundamental questions such as:

• What is the scientific basis of development and infertility?
• What are the legal and ethical implications of the work that is done?

The course provides training in the modern practical, academic and research skills that are used in academia and the clinic. Through a combination of lectures, small-group seminars and practical classes, you will apply this training and learn how it is applied towards the development of new therapies. The programme culminates with an individual research project or dissertation on a specific aspect of reproductive medicine research that interests you most.

Format and assessment

The MSc in Reproductive Medicine involves studying for 125 credits of taught modules, as indicated below. The taught component takes place during the autumn and spring terms, while a 60-credit research project take place over the summer months.

In addition to traditional scientific laboratory reports, experience is gained in a range of scientific writing styles relevant to future employment, such as literature reviews, patent applications, regulatory documents, and patient information suitable for a non-scientific readership.

This programme explores the histories of science, technology and medicine (HSTM) through a wide range of case studies, from the emergence of professional scientific disciplines such as physics and biology, to the growth of `Big Science' in the Cold war era, to the complex history of the National Health Service. We focus on the integrated understanding of HSTM through consideration of sites, institutions, and schools of thought and practice, and pay particular attention to how scientists and medics have communicated with non-specialist audiences.

The taught course consists of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Reflecting CHSTM¿s established research strengths, studies focus on nineteenth- and twentieth-century cases. Students will gain experience in historical essay-writing before researching and writing an extensive dissertation on a specialised topic, supervised by experienced researchers.

This MSc is appropriate for students from any disciplinary background. It works both as an advanced study course for students with undergraduate experience in HSTM, and as a conversion route for students from other backgrounds (often in the sciences, but also including general history, social policy, and other fields).

The HSTM pathway is the most appropriate for students who have wide-ranging interests across the field, or are interested in the histories of the physical sciences or the life sciences in particular. If you wish to focus on biomedicine or healthcare, you may prefer the Medical Humanities pathway. If you are particularly interested in contemporary science communication or policy, you should consider the parallel Science Communication MSc programme.

Aims

-To explore the histories of theories, practices, authority claims, institutions and people, spaces and places, and communication in science, technology and medicine, across their social, cultural and political contexts.

Teaching and learning

Teaching includes a mixture of lectures and small-group seminar discussions built around readings and other materials. We emphasise the use both of primary sources, and of current research in the field. Most students will also visit local museums and other sites of interest to work on objects or archives. All students meet regularly with a mentor from the Centre's PhD community, a designated personal tutor from among the staff, and, from Semester 2, a dissertation supervisor. Progression is developed through the Faculty's online-delivery Electronic Graduate Training Programme.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is mostly based on traditional essay-format coursework submission. The HSTM pathway includes one examination based on a precirculated paper. All MSc students undertake a research dissertation (or optionally, for Medical Humanities students, a portfolio of creative work) counting for 60 of the 180 credits.

Many drugs listed as conventional medications are derived from plants and were originally administered in plant form.

Over recent years, in their search for novel therapeutic agents, there has been a huge rise in interest from the global pharmaceutical industry centred on the isolation and evaluation of compounds from plants used in medical treatment derived from traditional medicine sources.

Based on the increasing importance of this emerging area of natural product science this programme of study will enable individuals with specific expertise in the regulation and development of plant-based medicines to pursue a career in the rapidly expanding phytopharmaceutical industry or a government regulatory body.

Programme structure

Phytopharmaceuticals is multi-disciplinary. You will study, plant chemistry, phytochemical analysis, analytical methods, quality control, toxicology, ethnobotany, herbal therapeutics, legislation and regulation of herbal products, and research methods.

In order to be eligible for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma, a student shall have passed the two specialist modules, the optional module and the core module; or one specialist module, the research project and the core module (120 M Level credits). Students obtaining 60 M level credits (by the core module and either specialist module or the research project) may be considered for the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Life Sciences.

In order to be eligible for the award of the Masters degree, a student shall have passed both specialist modules, the optional module, the research project and the core module (180 M level credits).

Research

Sport and exercise science research occurs within the world-leading Applied Sports Technology Exercise Medicine (A-STEM) Research Centre.

Significant research in diabetes and health as well as sedentary behaviour, physical activity, fitness, fundamental movement skills in childhood obesity is undertaken by a number of clinical exercise science staff.

Our elite sport performance group is leading a project supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government to position Wales at the forefront of Science, Technology and Medicine in elite sport and to promote its wider application in health and education. This project represents a unique collaboration of leading Welsh academics, businesses and sport, with the overall objective of enhancing their respective performances.

Fundamental links integrating engineering and sport and exercise science research are being developed by the Sports Visualisation Group who analyse video material to rapidly produce data for immediate analysis of sports performance. Recently the Engineering Behaviour Analytics in Sport and Exercise (E-BASE) research group was set up to investigate the use of advanced sensor and processing technology to quantify training and activity in sport and clinical populations respectively.

We have international research links and projects with universities in Southern and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USE, Italy and Austria.

Why study Palliative Care Research at Dundee?

Dundee is ideally placed to deliver the MPH in Palliative Care. The Division of Population Health Sciences has several internationally recognised research programmes, with associated academic and research staff, and the Division also houses the renowned Health Informatics Centre (HIC) which provides researchers access to anonymised record-linked data. This includes routinely collected NHS patient datasets for the whole population.

The MPH degree has been run successfully in Dundee for over 25 years and our past students now contribute to the global public health workforce. Building on this success, we are ideally placed to offer a new exit - in palliative care research - from the core MPH. The MPH Palliative Care Research presents an opportunity to integrate public health with quality palliative care research and the clinical palliative care services. This provides a rich learning environment for prospective students.

Research led supervision

The Co-Director of the course, Dr Deans Buchanan, was recently appointed Consultant in Palliative Medicine. The Tayside Palliative Care Service is well placed to support excellence in research and in research training. The varied clinical settings throughout Tayside provide an excellent basis for research projects. Clinicians from within the palliative care service will supervise dissertations and include: Dr Rosie Conway, Dr Claire Douglas, Dr Fiona McFatter, Dr Martin Leiper and Dr Alison Morrison. In addition, Dr Bridget Johnston, Reader in Palliative Care (School of Nursing and Midwifery) will also contribute to the teaching and supervision of students.

Aims of the Programme

This course will provide you with:

* The necessary skills and expertise to enable you to undertake well designed research and interpret research data.
* The requisite communication skills and understanding of the importance of such communication.

Teaching & Assessment

This course is based in the School of Medicine. The MPH in Palliative Care Research degree course starts in September each year and lasts for 12 months on a full time basis, or 24 months on a part time basis.

How you will be taught

A variety of teaching methods will be used including traditional lectures; tutorials; discussion sessions; self directed learning including the use of internet based resources; and supervised research.

The MPH programme of studies provides teaching within a supportive environment and students are encouraged to contact lecturers to raise specific questions.

Dissertation
The purpose of the dissertation is to enable students to write a dissertation which utilises all of the knowledge and expertise that they have acquired during the taught component of the course.

How you will be assessed

Performance is monitored by formal examinations and continuous assessment. Formative assessment is delivered through group and individual feedback during the tutorials, discussion sessions and on coursework. Summative assessment is based on assignments and examinations. Examinations are marked by two independent members of the School who are blinded to student identity. Guidelines for markers are provided. The dissertations are also double marked.

Careers

An MPH (Palliative Care Research) will enhance the employability of professionals interested in palliative care research.

For Specialty Trainees in Palliative Medicine this will add distinct skills sets and an essential understanding of both research and public health issues. Such qualifications will open job opportunities in academic medicine and at policy development levels. This course is compatible with the Palliative Medicine Curriculum and dissertation projects could be undertaken in candidates own localities.

Non-medical staff (including nursing staff) will benefit from the same skill set and enhanced ability to enter academic palliative care. Multi-professional learning is encouraged and dissertation projects can be tailored to specific backgrounds.

The Graduate Certificate in Integrative Health is designed for health care professionals desiring graduate study of evidenced-based, integrated approaches to health promotion, disease prevention, and treatment.  An accelerated format is available for many of the courses, so that the Certificate can be earned in three semesters or less.  Students without adequate preparation in disease etiology are strongly advised to take    HEA 500 Diseases. Those desiring advanced study in a particular integrative health area may elect, under advisement, HEA 609 Independent Study; while those desiring a clinical field experience may elect HEA 611 Field Placement, also under advisement.

Delivered fully online, the course-based Master of Science (MSc) in One Health degree program is designed to equip veterinarians, animal scientists, medical doctors, health professionals and biological scientists with an in-depth understanding of the principles of, and issues associated with, One Health. Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) is committed to a One Health approach to sectoral and multidisciplinary integrative mechanism to enable research aimed at sustainably reducing the burden of zoonoses. RUSVM’s geographical location in the Caribbean, its existing research focus on One Health, its experienced faculty and its global partnerships will allow students to gain a hands-on educational experience on one of the most topical global issues.

Zoonoses and other diseases affecting livestock production and health have serious impacts on the economic growth, health and food security and alleviation of poverty in tropical and resource constrained countries. Students will have the opportunity to explore the complex interplay of altered environments and infectious diseases as an increasing threat to agriculture, public health and endangered/threatened species, on a global basis.

The MSc One Health degree program requires 41 credits ( based on guidelines from the United States Department of Education), obtained through coursework and a project, leading to the submission of a thesis. Students are required to undertake specified core courses amounting to 23 credits. The MSc program is delivered over 1 year on a full-time basis as well as part-time over 2 or 3 years.

Students will acquire and enhance intellectual skills in scientific assessment and research methodology, as well as practical skills in communication, organization and scientific writing.

Delivery

The taught component will be instructed by distance learning via eCollege®, our virtual learning environment. You will be taught by our faculty and specialist modules may be delivered by our partner institutions.
The research project may be carried out in St. Kitts and Nevis or in other locations, as appropriate, under the supervision of a RUSVM faculty member. The research component may be desk-based, lab-based or through fieldwork and will result in the submission of a thesis. A short residential component will allow the student cohort to share their perspective and dissertation work to the RUSVM research community.

Assessment

Assessment will be conducted through traditional and novel methods suited to an online delivery mode and will include, for example, essays, critical review of peer-reviewed articles, online tests and quizzes, blog writing, research proposal writing, research/fieldwork journal development, group discussions, group project work and social media interactions. This innovative master program enables you to meet the demands of employers in the scientific field worldwide. You will be trained in all aspects of cutting edge molecular stem cell biology including legal and ethical aspects, good medical practice and acquisition of third party funding. The course combines cutting edge approaches such as iPSC and bioprinting with traditional basic disciplines such as histology to secure an in-depth understanding towards innovative translational approaches in medicine. The course is entirely taught in English.

Holding our degree means you have acquired a robust expertise in theory and practice in one of the most scientifically and ethically demanding biomedical fields of today.

During the first year of the program, students achieve a fundamental understanding of developmental processes that are linked to the current progress of stem cell research. This theoretical knowledge is further deepened and expanded on by hands-on experience in the relevant laboratories.

About the programme

Sexual health is a national priority in Scotland. Many traditional family planning and genito-urinary services have integrated in order to provide a holistic, one-stop-shop approach to care.

Clinical practice is integrated with the theoretical component of the programme and may be started after the first six days of theory. Health boards allocate clinical placements to students and clinic times vary depending on the health boards.

The focus is on working in partnership with clients to promote excellence in sexual and reproductive healthcare.

Your learning

Three modules are taken together in one trimester:

Reproductive Health – explores contemporary issues in contraception and reproductive health

Genito-urinary Medicine – offers you an opportunity to explore contemporary issues in genitourinary medicine (GUM)

Sexual and Reproductive Health Practice – gives you the opportunity to apply theory learned from Reproductive Health and Genitourinary Medicine modules to clinical practice within sexual and reproductive health clinics in health boards throughout the west of Scotland.

Practical experience

Students will undertake fifty hours clinical practice which must be completed by December. Clinical placements will be allocated to the
student by the health board.

Our campuses are equipped with artificial simulated environments with contemporary healthcare technology, where you’ll learn in a realistic context, to put your knowledge into practice. The unpredictability of patient symptoms are mimicked using sophisticated software in a clinical ward setting, ranging from low to high dependency beds.

Investment in the Domus Initiative – an older adult artificial home environment – provides you with experience in caring for older people and dementia care. In a first for the Scottish university sector, we have established A Community Orientated Resource for Nursing (ACORN) where students can practice within a simulated primary care environment.

Lanarkshire and Paisley campuses also provide midwifery students with excellent learning and teaching environments with facilities and equipment that includes a birthing room with maternal simulator and a birthing pool for simulated water births.

• we are working with the Glasgow Improving Cancer Journey Programme to evaluate this groundbreaking intervention in cancer care in Scotland
