This MSc programme is designed to provide students with an in-depth working knowledge of the principles and practice of forensic toxicology. The major strength of this programme is that students study within an operational ISO 17025 accredited forensic toxicology laboratory and are taught by practising forensic toxicologists. This programme will be of particular interest to those interested in pursuing or furthering careers in forensic toxicology as court-reporting scientists, laboratory scientists or academics. This programme also enables graduates to gain experience in research before applying to a doctoral programme.

Why this programme

-We are the longest established forensic toxicology MSc in the UK, and the only programme in the UK delivered by practising forensic toxicologists in an operational ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.
-Our staff are regularly called to court to give evidence as expert witnesses. You will have the opportunity to visit a Scottish court in session and develop skills as an expert witness though lectures and practical sessions, including a moot court exercise.
-Students can learn first-hand within a unit with one of the largest forensic toxicology laboratories. No other Universities offering a taught Forensic Toxicology degree have an associated laboratory.

Toxicology is the study of adverse effects of chemicals and other substances on humans, other animals, plants and the environment, and how they can be avoided or minimised. These courses provide an introduction to the principles of modern toxicology in relation to environmental, occupational, and public health in the context of the chemical, food and pharmaceutical industries. These courses are aimed at individuals with a scientific qualification who wish to develop their skills and knowledge of toxicology and gain a recognised third-level qualification in the area. Current practising toxicologists will also benefit from undertaking individual modules for continuing professional development (CPD), as all of the modules will contribute towards maintenance of professional toxicological accreditation. The course content has been approved by the Irish Register of Toxicologists (IRT) and is recognised as accreditation for CPD in this area.

Our Toxicology MRes is a research-based course with a taught component that is equivalent to an MSc. It provides a springboard into a career that involves a working knowledge of scientific research.

The course is designed for graduates with a BSc in the life sciences or other science disciplines, and for intercalating and fully qualified MBBS or BDS students. It can be taken either as a stand-alone qualification or as an entry route onto a PhD or MD.

The taught component of the course includes subject-specific content in the area of toxicology. You have the flexibility to develop your own bespoke course by selecting additional, complementary modules. You will also participate in training in general research principles, and other professional and key skills.

The subject-based modules give a broad understanding in toxicology, from basic concepts and molecular mechanisms to a review of target organ toxicities, pre-clinical and clinical pharmaceutical toxicology testing. They provide a broad overview of toxicology as it is applied in the pharmaceutical industries.

Your research project comprises the major element of the course. This project will involve 24 weeks of research in an area of toxicology under the supervision of an expert academic researcher in the field.

You will learn about the nature and mechanism of adverse effects of chemicals such as those found in industry, in the household, in agriculture, in medicine and those that occur naturally in the environment. We give particular emphasis to molecular and cellular mechanisms of toxicity and to risk assessment.

The MSc in Toxicology programme aims to:

- provide a broad, modern training in the theoretical and practical aspects of toxicology
- prepare individuals to collate, interpret and communicate toxicological information
- provide an opportunity to study at the cutting edge of research in a chosen specialist field of toxicology in clinical practice, industry or academia

This new and innovative Masters programme caters for the current global need for toxicologists and ecotoxicologists who are competent in conducting hazard and risk evaluation of chemical substances.


Aims
The programme aims at providing students with an advanced and up-to-date understanding of the effects of chemicals on human and environmental health and the resulting impact on chemical risk assessment and regulation. The programme covers both human and ecotoxicological risk assessment and includes modules on topical areas, such as mixtures toxicology, endocrine disruption and computational toxicology. Some modules have been designed specifically to be offered as short-term training programmes for professionals


The course is suitable for graduates interested in obtaining a qualification in human and environmental health, as well as students already in full time employment who require either formal qualifications or intend to revalidate their qualifications in toxicology. This will contribute to their continuing professional development (CPD) and towards the requirements for the UK Register of Toxicologists.

Students wishing to undertake graduate studies at the MSc or PhD level with emphasis on toxicology will be admitted by a participating department and will register in both the participating department and in the collaborative specialization in Toxicology.

Students can work with faculty members within ten separate departments and undertake research in areas such as: role of oxidative stress in Alzheimer disease, DNA damage by chemical carcinogens, regulation of drug metabolizing enzymes, biodegradation of environmental pollutants, risk assessment of pesticides and pesticide screening by antibody development, insect resistance to insecticides, metal contamination of soils and toxicity to plants.

One of the most rapidly developing areas of toxicology is the use of molecular, cell biology and omics to identify adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) and to develop a mechanistic understanding of chemical toxicity at the cellular and molecular level. This is not only of fundamental interest (i.e., understanding the mechanism of action) but it also relates to an increased need for a mechanistic component in chemical risk assessment and development of high throughput screens for chemical toxicity.

The MRes in Molecular Mechanistic Toxicology is a one-year full-time programme that provides students with a research-orientated training in a lively, highly interactive teaching and research environment.

Programme content

The programme is coordinated by the School of Biosciences, which is recognised internationally as a major centre for both teaching and research in Toxicology. Molecular Toxicology is a major component of the School of Biosciences research activities along with interactions with other departments including Chemistry and the Medical School.

Specific areas of active research include:

- Mechanisms of cell toxicity
- Development of novel DNA binding chemicals
- Cellular proliferation and differentiation
- Environmental genomics and metabolomics

On this course you'll study the signs and symptoms associated with the use of common drugs and poisons, basic pharmacology, mechanisms of drug/poison action, drug metabolism and drug elimination from the body. In addition to the more traditional areas of forensic toxicology, the course will introduce you to aspects of environmental forensic science where toxicology may be involved.

Toxicology and Environmental Health

In the Master's in Toxicology and Environmental Health you gain knowledge and skills in the recognition and evaluation of human or animal exposure to potentially hazardous factors in the environment.

The Master's programme in Toxicology and Environmental Health deals with the health risks of exposure to potentially harmful agents in the environment, in the workplace and through the food chain. Possible effects on ecosystems are also examined.This two year research programme is comprised of theoretical courses, a major and minor research project to gain practical skills, and the writing of a final Master's thesis. This programme is organised by the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS), an inter-faculty institute of Utrecht University; for your research projects it is therefore possible to work within one of the divisions of IRAS. Your minor project may also be carried out at an institute outside Utrecht University or abroad; or depending upon the career you find most appealing, you may replace your minor research project with a professional profile, including Management, Communication & Education, or Drug Regulatory Sciences. Graduates of the programme are prepared for further PhD studies in fundamental or applied research, or for a post at an academic level; they may work as toxicological risk assessors, occupational hygiene consultants, or forensic specialists.

MSc Forensic Toxicology combines aspects of analytical chemistry, biochemistry and pharmacology that are crucial to the role of the drugs chemist working within a toxicological environment. While the primary focus of this course will be drugs of abuse, the underpinning science and methodologies are equally relevant to a toxicologist analytical chemist working in the pharmaceutical or other related industries.

As a Forensic Toxicologist you may be called to provide evidence in a court of law, training in this important aspect is provided through an Expert Witness module which includes a moot court presentation. In addition to acquiring a sound theoretical understanding of the subject area there is a strong emphasis on developing practical skills throughout the course.

This cumulates in a 60 credit project whereby students have the opportunity to specialise in various areas of drugs toxicology. This course will appeal to graduates from a wide range of disciplines including forensic science, chemistry, biology and other related disciplines.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION

We will be seeking accreditation from the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Computing Facilities are available in the general computing suites found within the building and throughout campus. Extensive Resources are available to support your studies provided by Learning & Information Services (LIS) – library and IT staff. You are advised to take advantage of the free training sessions designed to enable you to gain all the skills you need for your research and study.

LIS provide access to a huge range of electronic resources – e-journals and databases, e-books, images and texts.

Course and module materials are not provided in ‘hard copy’ format, however, wherever practicable, lecture notes and/or presentations, seminar materials, assignment briefs and materials and other relevant information and resources are made available in electronic form via eLearn. This is the brand name for the on-line Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) that the University uses to support and enhance teaching and learning.

All students can access the eLearn spaces for the course and modules that they are registered for. Once logged into your eLearn area you can access material from the course and all of the modules you are studying without having to log in to each module separately.

The modules are assessed by both coursework and examination. To ensure that you do not have an excessive amount of assessment at any one time, the coursework assessment will take place uniformly throughout the course.
