It is a broad area of work that can require many different skills and others the option of specialisation – be it protecting the historical environment or urban design.

PgDip/MA Town Planning programmes are accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute. The courses enhance student's employability in planning, property development and research roles in the public and private sectors. This is through focusing not only on the planning system but on broader themes that influence the economic, environmental and social contexts in which we live.

The course enables you to study an area of spatial planning in some depth as many of modules are within a specialist area (urban design, urban regeneration or environmental planning).

Residential

It includes a compulsory one week residential European field study visit, recent destinations have been Venice and Germany. For all new entrants field study visit fees are included in the tuition fees.

Town Planning PgDip

You can also choose to study the PgDip for six modules; Full-time (10 months) or part-time (15 months).

Modules

Year 1:
- Planning history and theory
This module examines the history of planning and the evolution of the theories and ideas that have underpinned the various attempts to intervene in the natural and built environment through the institution of state-led planning systems. It stresses the concept of theory as understanding, the interlinked nature of history and theory and the importance for the development of planning practice.

- Sustainable places (with EU field study visit)
This module examines sustainability issues and challenges and the initiatives and responses from spatial planning and related agencies, institutions and organisations in the context of a European field study visit. The module will provide you with a detailed knowledge and understanding of the different forces at work within a region or city context. You'll develop your understanding of sustainability issues and the impact of climate change; recognise the processes of change and identify issues and mechanisms that allow an area to develop to fulfil its potential as well as respond to environmental and related challenges.

- Planning in London
You'll examine the planning context of London as a World City, as a centre for financial industries and as a home to millions of people. You'll find it particularly useful as an introduction to town planning in the UK and for understanding how a major city functions.

- Planning practice project
You'll have the opportunity to develop an individual project based on your chosen specialist area of study. The project must link together both theoretical and practice debates within the area of specialism (where required) and must be practice focused. You'll be able to relate the subject content contained in the specialist area of study to practical problems that may be encountered in a work situation. You'll be encouraged to explore the links between planning education and practice through a particular practice relevant project. In addition, the module will prepare you for your Assessment of Professional Competence (APC).

- Elective
Students are required to take an elective module, on offer from the Masters Level modules within the Department. This may be an additional specialism module if desired.

Plus one specialist option from:
- Urban design project (urban design specialism)
This project based module provides you with the opportunity to extend and develop your urban design skills in a practical context in relation to the planning process and the urban context for design. You'll also review theories and approaches to urban design in the context of real projects and places in use as well as your own work. Whenever possible the module will be linked to 'live' projects and areas and cases of current interest.

- Urban regeneration strategies and projects (urban regeneration specialism)
The module focuses on contemporary regeneration practice, which in recent years has taken place within an increasingly competitive context including declining public finance. This will be explored in the context of a specific 'major' project and the regeneration strategy that provides a framework for development in the wider area.

- Environment and resource management, or, Transport, society and planning (environment specialism)
You'll focus on a number of key themes in the context of environmental management and planning, and explore them in the context of current policy, law and practice. You'll also be introduced to environmental assessment, sustainability appraisal and environmental management techniques and processes.

Plus the Dissertation (MA only)
Part-time taught one day per week, with one or two modules being taught in each semester.

Employability

- Town Planner as a career
Currently there is a national shortage of qualified town and environmental planners in the UK so the demand for our postgraduate courses is particularly high.

The natural career path for graduates is to work as a town planner – this can be for a local authority, as private consultants or for planning government agencies.

- Role and responsibilities
General activities for town planners range from developing creative and original planning solutions to satisfy all parties, to writing often complex reports which make recommendations or explain detailed regulations, to conducting research and analysis to help determine strategic developments.

Most jobs will be largely office-based, but visits to meet clients and attend external meetings are not uncommon. There are opportunities available throughout the country, as every local authority employs planners.

- Career progression
Graduates from the programme will emerge with a range of knowledge and skills of value to potential employers and to career progression opportunities. Employment prospects are excellent with demand exceeding supply. Successful planning students are likely to find jobs with local authorities, private consultants in property and planning government agencies.

This course is aimed at built environment professionals and others with a relevant background who wish to gain an in-depth understanding of planning and sustainable development, whether to improve career prospects in their country or enter international practice. Through the course you will examine the growing problems of sustainable development facing cities, regions and communities in a rapidly urbanising world, subject to growing climate change and other environmental, economic and social pressures and risks.

Based in London, you will have access to internationally recognised experience of spatial planning for sustainable development, and explore contemporary theories, public policy thinking and good practice in planning in both the developed and developing worlds. The University of Westminster is the UK's first Habitat Partner University. We work with UN-HABITAT and like-minded institutions to promote the socially and environmentally sustainable development of towns, cities and regions, in accordance with the UN Millennium Development Goals.

The course is primarily for full-time international, UK and EU students, but it is also open to part-time UK-based students who want to explore an international pathway for their career development. Your study focuses on a range of themed, design-based studios dedicated to specific areas of practice or research. There are compulsory modules in town planning, humanities, management and building sciences, and an integrated town and regional planning project. This flexible and diverse course deals with these complex aspects in a creative and innovative way, with much of what you learn applicable worldwide.

Architecture, planning and landscape present a complex inter-relationship between people, buildings, landscape and the environment. The course focuses on understanding the role of architectural design in the built environment. This includes the need to relate buildings, and the spaces between them, to human needs.

The course provides a framework for you to develop your critical thinking about the design of place and space. You will learn how to deal with complex aspects of planning, landscape and architecture in a creative and innovative way.

This module focuses on introducing students to the various areas of law and issues of professional practice used and applied in the construction and property industries.

- Construction and planning
A module to provide a broad and critical perspective on planning and construction, as well as an understanding of the context within which planning and construction decisions are made and implemented.

- Valuations
This module is intended to allow the theoretical knowledge gained in a series of lectures and workshops to be applied in practice. The module will consider the fundamental principles of valuation, valuation formula and discounted cash flows. It will examine the methods used in the valuation of office, retail, industrial and residential properties. The module will also introduce the process of development and redevelopment of property.

- Applied valuations and the management of property interests
This module gives a practical insight into managing property. The roles and responsibilities of both landlords and tenants are considered in property management. Financial calculations that inform property management decisions are also considered.

- Economics for property professionals
This module provides an introduction into a set of theoretical and practical principles that enable property professionals to develop, manage and grow successful businesses.

- Property development process
This module provides a broad and critical perspective on property development and an understanding of the context within which property development decisions are made and implemented.

- Project finance
This module provides the necessary skills and knowledge for project funding, project evaluation and management in the property industry.

- Planning law and practice
This module examines the history of planning and the evolution of the theories, ideas and practices that have underpinned its attempts to intervene in the natural and built environment.

- Dissertation
The module provides the opportunity for students to undertake an independent piece of research, investigating in depth a subject, in which, they have a particular interest and of their own selection. Each student will submit a dissertation of between 15,000- 20,000 words. The module includes teaching of research methods.

The module develops a comprehensive understanding of the decision-making process in any real estate decision and it transition mechanism to market prices.

- Building control
The module focuses upon the control and enforcement of the Building Regulations and associated legislation, along with supporting technical documents and alternative solutions, to meet specific regulative requirements as they apply to various building schemes.

- Building information modelling and collaborative working
A module to provide a general understanding of the role that BIM can play throughout the design, construction and operation of building assets. It looks to identify and develop the necessary managerial, technical and interpersonal skills required to deliver better value through a collaborative BIM approach.

- Health and safety management in construction
This module focuses on the management of safety on site – a process that can be applied to a wide range of work settings and project types.

- History of architecture and construction
This module examines the inter-relationship between building design and production as it occurred throughout historical time. Particular attention will be paid to those periods in history when major transformations occurred in architectural style and the building process. Other historical themes will also be pursued.

- International real estate and construction
This module introduces students to the international context of real estate markets, construction industry and project development. It specifically focuses on the activity of international real estate investors and large construction companies. The module also provides students a comparative perspective on real estate markets and construction process.

- Legal resolution of property and construction disputes
This module focuses on the range of dispute resolution techniques used by construction and property professionals to resolve and manage disputes in the construction and property industries.

On completion of the course you will be able to offer a broad range of expertise, harnessing your first discipline with the theories, practices and techniques of the planning and development surveyor.

Transport touches everyone's lives. Transport planning is all about finding out how to reconcile today's needs for movement and development with protection and improvement of natural and urban environments. This course provides the necessary academic background to begin or enhance your career in transport planning.

Bristol is the home of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and an exciting place to study transport. The city has some interesting and complex transport problems, and plans to tackle them include a bus rapid transit network, continuing developments to cycling networks as the country's first Cycling City, and experimental closures of the city centre to motor traffic. We have close links with local authorities in the area, and have been commissioned to evaluate Bristol's Local Sustainable Transport Fund project.

Why do most Park and Ride schemes cause an increase in overall traffic? Why do people living in high-density housing make fewer journeys than people in suburbs, yet cause more traffic congestion? Does an increase in traffic inevitably equal increased collision and injury rates? These are just some of the questions posed by researchers from the Centre for Transport and Society at UWE Bristol.

Course detail

MSc Transport Planningdraws on our strong links with employers, and offers the potential for a summer work placement linked to your dissertation.

Throughout the course, you will acquire the knowledge and skills transport planning employers look for in potential employees. You will also focus on how spatial planning interacts with transport needs and transport systems, and we encourage you to be open to new ideas and to critically examine established practices.

All of our teaching staff are engaged in research and consultancy, and often advise national and local government.

Format

We use a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, workshops, debates and discussion, teamwork, presentations and external visits. Teaching staff are mainly active researchers in the Centre for Transport and Society, but where appropriate we include contribution from UWE Bristol experts working and teaching in other related fields.

We also have guest lectures from professional practitioners, which give you valuable insights into the latest developments in practice.

Transport planners must be numerate. If you lack confidence in this area, we can provide guidance and assistance for the mathematical content of the course.

Placements

A feature of this course is the potential for a work placement. This gives you the chance to gain valuable experience in practice and a competitive edge over graduates from other courses. If you choose to, we will help you to find a suitable placement with an employer based in the area, for a few weeks in the summer after the end of teaching and assessment. The placement (which may or may not be unpaid) will involve a project designed to address an employer's genuine need. Your experience and findings will contribute to your project-based dissertation.

Assessment is through coursework presentations and examinations.

Careers / Further study

Opportunities in transport planning are growing. UWE Bristol's transport graduates have an excellent reputation, and several have since secured senior positions around the region and further afield.

Every year, employers ask the programme leader to advise students of their vacancies. Several of our students have been hired as a direct result by employers such as Arup, Halcrow, ITP, WSP, Matrix, Parsons Brinkerhoff and Bristol City Council.

This fast-track conversion course is a one year full-time / two year part-time professionally accredited postgraduate planning programme that is fully recognised by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and is also accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors under their Planning and Development (P&D) specialism.

The programme is popular with students who would like to undertake a Planning Masters Degree that will, after the successful completion of their studies and a period of working in practice, enable them to work in the planning and development professions in the UK. It has also proven popular with international students where RTPI accreditation is recognised by the equivalent planning body in their native country. In recent years, the programme has attracted students from a range of countries including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Barbados and India.

On successful completion of the programme students will have gained an understanding of the full range of professional skills relevant for planning practice. Graduates will also possess specialist skills relevant to a chosen specialism.

Special features

An overseas field visit is an integral part of the programme. The cost of the visit is largely covered by the course fee, but students in recent years have also been asked to contribute around £200 towards the costs of the trip, depending on the venue. Recent locations have included Toronto, Barcelona and Amsterdam.

The programme also includes a module that introduces students to the excitement of working within a professional, 'real world' context on a 'live' consultancy project. Working with industrial partners, students will be asked to complete a piece of work on an area of planning, urban regeneration, or environmental management - depending on their chosen specialism - to a standard that is expected and demanded in the planning, environmental management or development professions. Professional accreditation

The MSc in Spatial Planning is fully accredited by both the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). This means that on graduation you can complete the Assessment of Professional Competence programmes of these professional bodies and become a full member.

In order to attain full accreditation for both the RTPI and RICS, graduates must combine the Postgraduate Diploma in Spatial Planning with one of our specialist master's programmes. These include: an MSc in Environmental Assessment and Management, an MSc in Historic Conservation, an MSc in Urban Planning: Developing and Transitional Regions, or the MA in Urban Design.

Teaching and learning

Learning methods include lectures, directed reading, workshops, seminars, and practical and project work. Some modules include site visits and fieldwork.

Teaching is organised on a module-credit basis, involving approximately 200 hours of personal study and approximately 36 hours of staff contact, normally delivered through three-hour teaching blocks over a 12-week period.

Approach to assessment

Each course module is assessed individually, generally on the quality of written or design work, and to some extent on verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include essays, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project work, design and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations and practical exercises.

Field trips

The MSc in Spatial Planning includes a compulsory overseas field trip that is part of the two semester 1 core modules. The field trip is designed to provide students with practical examples and experience of planning in another European country.

The trip usually takes place in mid-November and normally includes three to four nights away from the UK. In the past, this field trip has been to Barcelona, Amsterdam and Lyon. The teaching staff are constantly reviewing new destinations that can best contribute to students' overall planning education.

Other half or full-day field trips often form part of the individual programmes of specialist modules.

Attendance pattern

Teaching is organised on a module-credit basis. Each module involves approximately 200 hours of personal study and approximately 36 hours of staff contact, normally delivered through three-hour teaching blocks over a 12-week period.

In recent years, teaching has been largely concentrated on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with two modules taught on each day. Generally the first year of the part time course takes place on Thursdays, and the second year on Tuesdays, whilst the full time course has teaching on both these days.

In addition the wide spread of backgrounds and current work positions among students on our courses gives access to much valuable experience within each planning cohort.

Not only is the MSc in Spatial Planning seen as the benchmark qualification for professional planners, it is also widely recognised as providing the transferable skills and critical knowledge necessary in many fields of work in the built and natural environment.

Local government is just one of very many career opportunities available to MSc in Spatial Planning graduates.

Today our alumni can be found in senior positions in some of the largest international planning and environmental consultancies, in government agencies, in large NGOs and campaigning organisations. They can also be found in similar positions in organisations across the globe.

You will gain a sound understanding of the procedures and methods of town and country planning in the UK, and to some extent Ireland - developing an appreciation of who does what, why and how.

Our course is suitable if you are in a related profession and wish to improve your knowledge as part of your continuing professional development or, if you are a planner - including Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) members - wishing to update your knowledge on core aspects of planning practice, either for your professional development or other reasons such as returning to work.

Mohammad is responsible for the strategic leadership of the Faculty of Arts, Environment and Technology,having joined our University in June 2011 from the University of East London. A well published researcher, with over 50 refereed conference and Journal publications, his research profile includes many funded research programmes including JISC and EU FP7 projects. Mohammad’s first degree was in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He then went on to complete a PhD in the 'Design, Development and Evaluation of Multimedia Based Learning Systems' at Kingston University. In 1989 he set up one of the UK's first multimedia PC companies, 'Systems 2000'.
