The MSc International Tourism Development programme is specifically designed for those with a particular interest in developing tourism in a sustainable way within a local, regional or national economy.

With an emphasis on both the theoretical and applied aspects of tourism planning and development, you will explore conceptual and practical issues facing the public and private sectors when dealing with the development of tourism.

The programme explores a wide variety of tourism development situations, drawing on our longstanding expertise in the sector.

Graduates often pursue careers in fields such as policy-making, strategic planning and development in local and national government, or tourism consultancy.

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year. It consists of eight taught modules and a dissertation.

Educational aims of the programme

The programme is designed for those with a particular interest in the issues, problems and processes associated with the planning and development of tourist destinations.

The emphasis of the programme is on both the theoretical and applied aspects of tourism planning and development. The programme provides coverage of both the conceptual and practical issues and problems facing the public and private sectors dealing with the development of tourism in a wide variety of situations.

It provides a basis relevant to a career in tourism development in the public or private sectors. The programme draws on the stimulus of the School’s recent research activities, and takes an integrated approach to the relationships between the various components of the programme.

The programme also provides students with opportunities to work directly with industry partners through not only guest lectures, but also on a real tourism project through the Applied Dissertation initiative and during fieldtrips. The programme provides students with the basis for developing their own approach to learning and personal development.

Upon completing the programme, students will be able to demonstrate:

  • A systematic, in-depth understanding of the development, issues and influences relevant to tourism development
  • A high level of theoretical and applied knowledge of the management operation, organisation and provision of business or service sector education

Programme structure

The programme is structured around a series of mobility periods across two years where you study at each of the three partner universities for one semester, taking a mix of core and optional courses. Teaching is delivered via mix of lectures and seminars, with occasional guest lectures and opportunities for work placements. The final mobility period can be spent with either partner, depending on your chosen topic of dissertation, under the supervision of a team from at least two universities. The programme also includes an optional two-week summer school at Wageningen University (Netherlands) at the end of year 1.

This programme is designed to deliver a substantial theoretical and practical understanding of the role and contribution of the tourism industry in the context of international development. You will gain the skills required to manage sustainable tourism businesses, alongside the specialisms of strategic destination management and marketing. You will explore tourism’s relationship with the socio-economic and political contexts within international development, tourism disasters affecting tourist destinations, and the role of tourism in the development of countries that have experienced conflict. An emphasis upon the micro-economic contribution of enterprise projects to support development and sustainability also features within the curriculum; delivered through the Ashoka Changemaker philosophy.

Upon completion of the programme, you may wish to progress your studies through a doctoral qualification.

Course content

The programme encourages you to analyse and evaluate the relationship between sustainable development principles and the management of destinations to achieve long-term viability of resources; and the role of event tourism in destination development as a catalyst for physical, economic and socio-cultural regeneration. In addition, the programme provides insight into the political economies surrounding development and the contribution that tourism makes to a destination’s risk mitigation, social renewal and recovery after disasters and post conflict scenarios.

Drawing on a variety of case studies and projects, the programme explores the global scope of tourism, the policies and strategies associated with successful management, the role the industry plays in international development, and the stakeholders involved in its development. The programme will also prepare students for the practical, project based, and customer focused characteristics of the tourism industry.

Semester 1

From the beginning of the programme, you will be introduced to some of the main themes in destination and tourism management, to enable you to analyse the strategic and dynamic nature of international tourist destinations and issues facing managers of such destinations. Modules in semester one will highlight the need to ensure long-term viability of destination resources through themes such as sustainable development and political economies of international development.

Semester 2

You will examine the vulnerability of destinations and the strategies and approaches needed by managers to develop and recover, particularly post-conflict. The strategic use of events in both the public and private sectors will be examined, particularly their use as a catalyst for physical, economic and socio-cultural regeneration. There is a strong emphasis on developing personal adaptability in cross cultural (work) environments as Master graduates can be expected to, and will have the expectation to – lead and manage other people internationally. You will also begin to prepare for the completion of a dissertation through a series of taught research methods sessions, during which a research proposal is produced.

Semester 3

The research proposal produced in Semester two will guide the development of a clearly defined and evidenced study purpose, a critical review of the extant literature, and a robust methodology. Data is then collected, analysed, interpreted and applied to the study purpose, and a 15-20,000 word research report (dissertation) is produced, with the support of a dissertation supervisor.

Opportunities Abroad

In previous years students have participated in an optional study trip to an international destination. The cost of this optional trip would not normally exceed £500 for flights and accommodation. Students normally allow an additional £100 for their expenses.

The programme team also aims to provide a regional or national study trip annually to a tourism attraction or exhibition. In some cases students are required to contribute to the cost of entry; this would normally not exceed £50.00.

Methods of Learning

Typically you will have nine hours (approximately) of contact time with your tutor in the first semester and eleven hours (approximately) in the second. Overall you will spend 108 hours per module in self-directed study (reading and research).

Assessments

A variety of individual and group based assessments are used including reports, presentations, posters, e-portfolios, projects, client briefs, multiple choice tests and examinations.

We will teach you through a combination of lectures and seminars, and you will typically have 20 hours of this per module. We also expect you to undertake 180 hours of independent study for each module. For your 12,000 word dissertation, we will provide four workshops and five hours of one-to-one supervision to complement your 587 hours of independent study. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.

Assessment

Performance on taught modules in the Geography Department is normally assessed through essays and other written assignments, oral presentations, lab work and occasionally by examination, depending on the modules selected. All students also undertake a research-based dissertation of 12,000 words.

The SOAS MA Anthropology of Travel and Tourism enables students to pursue specialist interests in global voluntary mobility while gaining advanced training in social and cultural anthropology in a world-leading department. Students will develop expertise in anthropological theory and practice; learn to undertake ethnographic research; and gain comprehensive grounding in the anthropological study of travel and tourism, including issues of development, political economy, cultural change, heritage, cross-cultural encounter, representation and meaning, space and place, commodification, and interconnections between diverse histories and cultures of travel worldwide.

Tourism is not only a culturally and historically shaped form of travel, but a complex social field that spans the globe, comprised of diverse actors, institutions, activities, and modes of interaction that overlap with and cross-cross other forms of global interconnection. As a whole, it comprises the world's largest industry and the single greatest peacetime factor moving people around the globe.

Both a manifestation and a medium of globalisation, tourism has profound significance in multiple realms of human life—economic, environmental, material, social, and cultural. This makes it an ideal lens through which to explore core themes in contemporary social anthropology, such as identity and alterity, political economy, development, heritage, locality, representation, imagination, commodification, and the global circulation of people, objects, ideas, images, and capital.

The MA programme draws upon:

- the emerging body of theoretically sophisticated, ethnographically rich work involving tourism and travel;

- a thorough grounding in the history and contemporary theoretical trends of social-cultural anthropology;

- close engagement with noted and rising scholars in the field, via the programme's Colloquium Series in the Anthropology of Tourism and Travel, as well as opportunities for informal dialogue with visiting anthropologists and sociologists of tourism;

Programme Structure

The SOAS MA in the Anthropology of Travel and Tourism is designed to offer students a chance to pursue specialist interests via a considered selection of courses to suit their individual needs. It provides:

1. a broad-based MA programme for students with some background in issues of tourism/travel who wish to enhance their knowledge in light of contemporary anthropological research.

2. a special-interest MA which will enable students to study topics involving tourism/travel in-depth, in relation to a specific theoretical approach or region.

The programme consists of four units, comprised of a combination of full-year (1 unit) and half-year (.5 unit) courses.

Teaching & Learning

The learning environments making up the MA programme in Anthropology of Travel and Tourism run the gamut from lecture halls to intimate seminar rooms, suiting a wide range of learning styles. Study a language; take a course (or two) in anthropology of human rights, development, globalisation, religion, or gender, among many others; choose a course in another department that catches your interest and contributes to your dissertation plans, from world music to development studies.

The academic staff in the Department of Anthropology are dynamic, experienced teachers who are widely recognised for their expertise and enjoy working directly with students. Renowned scholars from other institutions also come to share their knowledge: nearly every day of the week, the SOAS Anthropology Department has a public lecture series running, including series in the general Social Anthropology, Anthropology of Food, Migration and Diaspora Studies, and, of course, Anthropology of Tourism and Travel.

In addition to these formal settings for learning, our students also learn from one another. Hailing from around the globe and bringing diverse life experiences to bear on their studies, all MA students in the Department of Anthropology can take courses together, making it a rich environment for intellectual exchange. Students also benefit from campus-wide programmes, clubs, study groups, and performances.

Many students in the MA Anthropology of Travel and Tourism opt for hands-on learning via the half-unit Directed Practical Study in Anthropology of Tourism course, with placements in leading UK-based NGOs like Equality in Tourism and Tourism Concern, among others, as well as in private tour operator firms, providing background material for future research.

While students in the MA Anthropology of Travel and Tourism may take a language course for credit, all SOAS MA students, regardless of department or degree, are also entitled to register for non-credit free courses in a single language through the Language Entitlement Programme (LEP). This course meets the demand to develop managers with the ability to implement responsible tourism strategies within marketing, operations and product development.

You will explore domestic and international tourism understanding that responsible principles are as applicable to the Yorkshire Dales as they are to The Gambia. Our teaching is grounded in industry consultancy and research. The quality of our research is evident in the outstanding results achieved in the Research Assessment Exercise completed in 2014 in which Leeds Beckett came second in the country for sport and exercise science, leisure and tourism.

Lucy McCombes is a certified Travelife auditor and Dr Simon Woodward is chair of the ICOMOS-UK Cultural Tourism Committee and a Trustee of the Landscape Research Centre.

Responsible Tourism Theory & Practice (distance learning only) (20 credits)
This introductory module to the course introduces the concept of responsible tourism and ensures that all students have a common knowledge base about tourism assets and the tourism industry. (This module is not available to full-time students)

Tourism Destination Management: Planning & Policy (20 credits)
This module focuses on the strategies available for the management of a destination, including evaluating the role of public sector agencies and local communities in managing tourism and exploring how the public and private sector stakeholders can work together with civil society to achieve the objectives of responsible tourism management.

Masters Research Methods (20 credits)
This module involves learning the skills needed to research and assess responsible tourism initiatives and make realistic recommendations for enhancements.

Masters Research Project (40 credits)
This final module allows you to apply your research skills to an organisation, destination or initiative of your choice and apply your project management and business research skills to evaluating and improving the initiative, grounded on your theoretical understanding of responsible tourism.

Course Structure

The course is structured in three parts. Part A. Foundations for international sustainable tourism management studies, Part B. Core Master's study and Part C. Advanced expertise. All students complete Part B. Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A or Part C or a combination of the two.

PART A. Foundations for international sustainable tourism management studies
These studies will introduce you to international sustainable tourism studies at advanced undergraduate or graduate level. They are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field. .

PART B. Core Master's study
These studies draw on best practices within the broad realm of the tourism industry, policy governance and research, to develop a critical understanding of the relationships between tourism and sustainable development with a particular emphasis on emerging economies and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises within them.

PART C. Advanced expertise
The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development. You have two options.

The first option is a program of coursework study where you select the units to suit your own interests. This option includes the opportunity to undertake an internship in the field.

The second option is a 24 point research thesis. Students wishing to use this Masters course as a pathway to a higher degree by research should take this second option.

Students admitted to the course, who have a recognised honours degree in a cognate discipline including humanities or social sciences, will receive credit for Part C, however, should they wish to complete a 24 point research project as part of the course they should consult with the course coordinator

The MSc International Tourism Management course focuses on strategic decision making in relation to tourism operations, tourism marketing and strategic tourism management. This course enhances your practical work experience and career prospects through the requirement to engage in the production of aneco-tourism work-based project proposal. The first will comprise a research proposal (approx. 1,000 words) to be submitted online in week 5. Modular structure

The course comprises of two 20 credit modules set at Level 7. In summary: Module 1 is delivered as a face-to-face delivery block of 5 full days (6 hours per day); module 2 is delivered as 2 full days face-to-face tuition and 2 days of project site visits and 1 day of cohort project tutoring by distance learning (total 10 days delivery = 30 hours + 15 hours for scheduled assessment periods per module) = 45 hours per module.

The first module entitled Eco-tourism: Theory and Practice examines the economic, cultural and environmental impact of eco-tourism through face-to-face teaching delivery in London. This is delivered across five days as a block at the beginning of the first semester of entry to the course. Students then have the remainder of the 15 week semester to complete the integrative coursework assessment remotely.

The second module is entitled Developing a Project Proposal for Eco-Tourism. Its face-to-face content and site visits are also delivered at the beginning of the course (in the first semester of study) as part of the block delivery in London with two days devoted to tuition and two days to eco-tourism project visits. Students then continue their tuition remotely via distance-learning cohort tutorials during their second semester of study with one day’s remote cohort tutoring provided to support their project proposal development.

The Erasmus Mundus Master in Wine Tourism Innovation (WINTOUR) offers a truly integrated study program that takes advantage of the tourism and oenology expertise of three universities and regions of Europe: Rovira i Virgili University (Tarragona, Spain), the University of Porto (Portugal) and the University of Bordeaux (France). 

These universities are located in highly attractive touristic areas, recognized with the label of UNESCO Human Heritage, and have a long tradition in wine, producing specialty wines such as sparkling, fortified, aged red and sweet.

Program objectives

  • Prepare broadly trained, highly adaptable, qualified professionals for the tourism and wine industries. These graduates may then promote innovative wine tourism developments to generate added value through increased income and recognition of this sector.

Programme summary

Landscapes form our living environment. Natural landscapes are often beautiful in themselves, however most of those we now live in are the result of our complex interaction with the natural world. The new generation of landscape architects and spatial planners understand the challenges we face when shaping and creating the landscapes that form a key component of our living environment. Your goal is to study and design sustainable solutions for important landscape challenges such as climate change, energy needs, health, food security and urbanisation.

Specialisations

The programme offers two specialisations: landscape architecture and spatial planning.

Landscape Architecture
Your primary focus as a Wageningen landscape architect is the design and construction of metropolitan landscapes situated in estuaries and deltas worldwide. Your goal is to create sustainable designs based on a thorough investigation of the ecological, behavioural and aesthetical disciplines.

Spatial Planning
As a spatial planner you develop scenarios for future landscape transformation and evaluate the effectiveness of these scenarios for many different stakeholders. You study planning processes and generate and organise the theoretical and practical knowledge needed for spatial interventions.

Your future career

Once you graduate with an MSc in Landscape Architecture and Planning, you are well-prepared for a career as a landscape architect, spatial planning consultant, project manager, policy adviser and academic or applied researcher. Many of our alumni hold senior positions at consultancy and engineering companies, planning and design bureaus, district water boards, government agencies and universities. A number work for large multinationals, while others have set up their own company or are employed by small and medium sized enterprises.

For their thesis, Jesper and Ruud investigated sustainable tourism development in coastal landscapes. They visited the Dubrovnik Rivièra in Croatia for their case study and explored and developed an integrated design strategy for tourism development. Their designs on a regional and local scale show how site-specific landscape identities can function as a base for future sustainable tourism development. “We visited our study area twice. We explored the area ourselves, participated in workshops, and held interviews with local people. This gave us unique insights in the issues that arise when working in a different culture and landscape.”

The MSc in Rural Tourism Management is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute. Upon successful completion of the degree, you will be awarded CMI Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership and will therefore become a Member of the Chartered Management Institute (MCMI). You can then apply to the CMI for full Chartered Manager status if you wish.

Structure

The course may be studied full-time over 12 months or part-time over two years, plus one year to complete the Research Project.
You will study eight modules; five tourism and event management modules, two business management modules, and one research methods module.

If you do not wish to undertake the Research Project may choose to take a Postgraduate Diploma following successful completion of eight modules.

The sector - ranging from international hotel chains, airlines and tour operators to conference venues, tourist boards and government organisations - is one of the most diverse and exciting industries around, providing management opportunities worldwide in business operations, marketing, sales, customer service, HR, research, logistics and policy. Employment in this sector is set to grow over the next few years and the demand for senior and specialised roles will increase.

To excel in this industry you need to be a good leader, manager, entrepreneur and show awareness of the ethical, cultural, environmental and social settings within which you are working.

This Masters degree helps prepare you for this. We encourage an entrepreneurial and questioning approach to the industry, examining growth and development through the prism of social responsibility and sustainability. The degree also emphasises the management of strategic issues that arise in the sector, through the specialist modules of marketing, business development and management, leadership and cross cultural management.

We examine the needs of both the commercial and non-commercial elements of the sector and the networks and partnerships that link them.

Field trip

Postgraduate students enrolled in the MSc International Tourism and Hospitality Management join a residential five day trip Semester 2. For the last three years we have been to Belfast where we study the processes of city marketing. On your return we analyse the issues that the city faces in becoming a competitive destination and you write a City Marketing plan for Belfast.

International Tourism and Hospitality Management Top-up

If you already hold the Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management from either the Confederation for Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) or the Organisations for Tourism and Hospitality Management (OTHM) you can top-up your qualification to a full MSc by studying a research methods module and researching and writing a 20,000 word dissertation.

The degree is jointly delivered with ESHotels in Paris enabling you to integrate with students from this course when you jointly participate on a field trip.

Part-time = two modules a year for three years then dissertation in Year 4; or four modules in Year 1 then two modules plus the dissertation in Year 2, with dissertation extending into Year 3.

Teaching and learning

Classroom teaching includes a mix of traditional lectures, seminars, workshops and guest lectures from industry stakeholders. We undertake a real life business development scenario with our industry partner Merlin Entertainments and undertake a residential field trip in Semester 2.

The nature of the teaching and assessment will allow you to apply the theories and processes learnt in class to their preferred setting (e.g. public or private sector; tourism or hospitality industries; UK, European or International).

We are currently negotiating a partnership with InHolland University, Amsterdam, where you could study Semester 1 in Amsterdam and complete Semester 2 and the dissertation at LSBU (This option is open to UK and EU students only).

Academic expertise

Department staff are experts in their respective fields of urban, environment, tourism, heritage and leisure and related educational policy. Many have professional affiliations, appointed positions and research links, for example with the Association for Tourism in Higher Education, Local Economy, The Landscape Research Group, The Organisation for Tourism and Hospitality Management (OTHM), the Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality, the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Tourism Society. We integrate these links into our teaching wherever possible.

Tools and knowledge

The course develops the appropriate skills, tools and knowledge to operate innovatively in the global tourism and hospitality environments. The nature of the teaching and assessment allows you to apply the theories and processes learnt in class to your preferred setting (e.g public or private sector; tourism or hospitality industries; related policy and government organisations; UK, European or international).

Placements

If you are a home or EU student you may wish to consider undertaking a voluntary year-long work placement in the UK or overseas to gain, extend or seek variety in your experience within the industry prior to studying with us. If you undertake such a placement you may use this as the basis for an extended industry-related management project instead of the traditional dissertation. This is subject to prior approval by the Course Director and must be an investigation into an aspect of management that is worthy of investigation and is subject to the usual academic discipline.

This option is not open to overseas students, as Home Office regulations mean that overseas students are unable to get a visa for the placement year.

Professional links

We have a wide range of industry speakers on the course and you undertake a range of projects that bring you into contact with managers from the sector. In particular, you'll undertake a research project for the global attractions company Merlin Entertainments in Semester 1 where you analyse their operations and policies, develop solutions to a particular challenge and report back directly to their managers.

International Tourism as a career

Tourism is an international service industry and so you can probably expect a busy, fast-paced job wherever you decide to specialise, interacting with different people and organisations around the globe.

Our LSBU post graduates work around the world. Many work for international companies, tourist boards, policy and development institutes, acquiring senior management skills as they progress.

The nature of the industry - the large majority of organisations in the sector are small to medium enterprises (SMEs) - also provides opportunities for you to start your own business. Web-based tour operations, restaurants and events management companies are all popular options for start-ups. You certainly have choices over the route you take into this vast sector.

Career progression

There is a worldwide shortage of well qualified tourism and hospitality managers, particularly in Asia, and this professional Masters qualification will help you to progress your career. If you are academically minded this could also be a positive step towards a PhD and academic career.
