Course detail

Strengthening the profile and capacity of civil society is now seen as a top priority by political commentators, social scientists and policy-makers all over the world. There has never been a greater need to develop a critical yet constructive understanding of the actions, behaviours and institutions that populate the space between states and markets, ranging from local voluntary associations to national social enterprises and transnational charities.

This programme draws deeply on the unique combination of scholarly and practical knowledge of the third sector, social movements and philanthropy situated in the School. You develop an in-depth understanding of the evolution of the meanings of civil society across time and space and the role its organisations and institutions play in political, social and economic life.

Programme aims

Teaching imparts country-specific as well as cross-national and transnational empirical and theoretical knowledge of the historical and contemporary challenges faced by these organisations.

You are also engaged in analysing how third sector organisations relate to ongoing social, political and economic transformations. In particular, your capacity to think sympathetically, but critically, about third sector contributions to policy through welfare systems and in other public policy arenas is developed.

Through the successful completion of this programme you will gain knowledge and understanding of:

  • Foundational social science conceptualisations of civil society and their applicability to the modern world and its problems
  • Contemporary theories and ideologies of OCS and associated institutions and practices in a global age

The MSc International Management and Leadership is designed to be a vibrant and innovative course that focuses on best practice in  management and leadership while developing an international focus.  It covers contemporary management practice and also community engagement and service. In a fast changing, global economy, the MSc will equip you to assess the wider interconnections between organisations and their local, national and international contexts. You will build up a solid understanding of key management practice and develop your critical insight.

This MSc is specifically designed for anyone who may be looking to complement their non-business degree and has little or no prior business background. Alternatively, you may have completed to ordinary degree level and be aiming to enhance your qualifications. You will study a range of modules and complete a community based project where you will work with either a commercial business, community, voluntary or social enterprise. You can study for the general MSc International Management and Leadership or tailor your studies with our routes in Events, Family and Smaller Enterprise, Hospitality and Tourism (as follows).

This programme develops key leadership and management skills for current managers and future leaders of organisations in the homelessness sector.

The course was developed by the University's School of Business School in collaboration with the London Housing Foundation (LHF), who are sponsoring the course. LHF may consider sponsoring applicants from relevant areas of the public sector as well as the third/voluntary sector.

The course is primarily designed for appropriately experience and qualified staff in the homelessness and allied sectors. The course also enables you to make a study visit to a similar sector in another country through the support of the London Housing Foundation.

The course will run throughout 2017 on a part-time basis. There'll be an initial residential from Tuesday 24 to Thursday 26 January followed by a combination of weekly attendance (9 weeks) each Thursday afternoon and three two-day blocks (Thursdays and Fridays) during each Semester.

• Leadership and Management (20 Credits)

This module covers different concepts of leadership and management focusing on what might be considered the more appropriate styles in the homelessness and housing context. There'll be opportunities to evaluate your own individual and organisational competences and for skill development using in-depth reflections.

100% coursework but with two elements as follows:

Element 1 (40% weighting) – two examples of high level reflections of your leadership or managerial performance
Element 2 (60% weighting) – an individual written assignment applying relevant theoretical concepts to your organisation.

• Introduction to Accounting (10 credits)

This module provides you with a knowledge of basic concepts and practices in accounting, an understanding of accounting requirements in third sector organisations and an appreciation of good practice in financial reporting.

• Third Sector Organisational Development (20 Credits)

This module explores theories, techniques and knowledge in the area of Organisational Behaviour and People Management relevant to homelessness and housing organisations.

Element 2: (20% weighting) individual presentation on recommendations from element 1.

• Governance (10 Credits)

This module enables managers, of third sector and other civil society organisations, to reflect on and understand the role of governance in ensuring accountability within their organisations.

The Psychological Research Methods (Cognition and Neuropsychology) course provides broad training in the fundamentals of psychological science - the modern approach to studying mind and behaviour. The course combines training in psychological theory with practical skills development, preparing our students for a future career in psychology. Individual modules provide a thorough introduction to quantitative and qualitative research, the analysis and interpretation of data, and a critical skeptical approach to psychological science.

Opportunities for practical hands-on skills development are built in, ranging from low-tech observational assessment to high-tech eye-tracking, and including training on giving oral presentations. A self-reflective approach to personal development is encouraged, and students on this course are an integral part of Stirling Psychology's research community, housed within a dedicated MSc office. Course objectives

The primary aim of the course is to provide advanced training as a preparation for a research career in Psychology. The course develops the theoretical understanding and practical and interpersonal skills required for carrying out research. Postgraduates are an integral part of our research community. Students are based in a dedicated MSc office, or within an appropriate research group, and allocated a peer mentor. Students have an academic supervisor in Psychology who supports and guides their development - including the research dissertation project. Our aim is to encourage students to make the complex transition to become a fully independent research scientist.

Delivery and assessment

Teaching is delivered using a variety of methods including tutorials, demonstrations and practical classes, but the majority is seminar-based.

Students are typically taught in small groups in specialist classes, with first-year PhD students or other postgraduate students (for example, in modules from other MSc courses).

The individual module components provide 60 percent of the MSc grade, with the research dissertation contributing the remaining 40 percent.

This MBA offers real-life experiences and engagement with the industry. We have a strong belief and desire to take you out of the traditional classroom setting to experience and explore the sector for yourself. For example, current students were overnight guests at a five star hotel where they were able to discuss the history, operations and challenges with the owner.

Within the hospitality sector, the need for high performing groups and teams is of particular importance. This course will attract people holding an undergraduate honours degree who may want to change career to become an occupational therapist. It is an intensive course of study which will develop theoretical, analytical, practical and evaluative and reasoning skills.

Occupational therapists assess people’s disengagement from their occupations and provide ways for them to re-engage in their occupational roles or provide alternatives in order to improve their quality of life. Modules reflect the nature of occupational therapy, which is concerned with the relationship between people’s occupations and their health. The course prepares graduates to work in diverse practice contexts.

Teaching, learning and assessment

This course uses a wide range of learning and teaching methods, focusing on the person-centred nature of the work of an occupational therapist. Problem-based learning using case studies is a major feature with students working independently and collaboratively. Your performance will be assessed by a variety of methods including case studies, essays, projects and presentations. Practice education forms a core element of the course and your personal performance is also assessed. There are four placements in total (placement 1 – full-time 6 weeks, Placement 2 – part-time 17 weeks, placement 3 – part-time 14 weeks, Placement 4 – part-time 17
weeks). There may be additional travel costs for all placements and an accommodation cost for placement 1.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module which you study on campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. The PgDip academic modules require you to attend from 9.15am – 6.15pm.

Our goal is to help you develop into critical and reflective public health practitioners who have strong problem solving skills while being able to implement creative solutions. This programme has been designed primarily for international students who are government officers or who have work experience in social policy areas. This programme starts from an examination of UK social policy, with opportunities to examine the experiences of, and challenges facing other countries, as well as study UK social policy in depth. It includes a work-based placement within one or more public, private or third sector organisations in the West Midlands area. Policy into Practice is also offered without a work-based placement.

This programme is part of a suite of programmes designed primarily for international students who are government officers or policy officers, researchers or practitioners in non-governmental organisations who have work experience in social policy areas. The study of Policy into Practice concerns the development and nature of government interventions aimed at ensuring the welfare needs of their populations are met, and the ways those interventions are put into effect. Starting from an examination of UK social policy, the programme widens out to examine the experience and challenges facing other countries. The programmes include the opportunity to have a work-based placement within one or more public, private or third sector organisation in the West Midlands area.

The programme introduces students to the study of Social Policy and Practice and considers current and future political, economic and demographic contexts of policy making around the world.

Specialist option in health policy

What you will study

The PgC in Governance comprises of three 20 credit modules which are compulsory for all students studying the course. Each module can be studied on a ‘stand alone’ basis under the University’s Associate Student (Governance) programme.

Modules of study include:
- Governance and Scrutiny – This module is concerned with governing structures and the activity of the board. It looks at the processes surrounding governance, issues such as accountability and regulation, and joint and shared governance arrangements.

-Political Awareness – The focus of this module is the concepts of political awareness, public and political leadership, and the significance of politics on a local and national level.

- Understanding and Challenging Performance – Helping you to understand and improve upon the performance of your organisation, this module will explore a range of performance criteria for reviewing and assessing performance.

Learning and teaching methods

The Postgraduate Certificate in Governance comprises of a combination of classroom-based teaching and work-based learning. You will be required to attend approximately 10 days of classroom sessions which will take place in the form of block delivery (involving a few days study at a time). For each module, there are three days of supported learning (with added time for course induction). There are no set delivery dates, but it is likely that there will be two start dates for this award per year. In addition to this, you will be expected to undertake self directed learning and reflection to include completing an individual and organisational analysis, guided reading and assignment work.

During your studies you will participate in interactive learning and teaching methods such as presentations, flip charts, individual and group work, reviews of data and role play. All of these methods will have a clear link to the workplace.

Throughout your studies you will be given the opportunity to attend guest lecturers from speakers who have previously included politicians and senior leaders from across the public sector.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

This course has been specifically designed to develop key governance knowledge and associated skills in those who are working in this role in a range of public service and third sector fields. If you are seeking to work in governance roles, this course is focused on the development of relevant skills to enable you access relevant positions.

This is a postgraduate course and on completion, you will easily be able to move on to a Postgraduate Diploma and then on to a Masters award.

Assessment methods

You will undertake a range of innovative assessments methods that have been specifically designed to be ‘workplace relevant’; focusing on building key scrutiny and governance knowledge, skills and competencies which are relevant to your current job role.

Through assessments you will be required to demonstrate a range of academic and subject-specific skills, particularly research, problem solving and critical thinking. You will be assessed through a variety of coursework and presentations that are related to the workplace.

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) is an internationally recognised professional postgraduate degree, which is a public sector equivalent to the Master of Business Administration (MBA). The course is targeted primarily at public service and third sector professionals. The content is relevant to both international students and those based in the UK.

The aim of the MPA is to enable learners to build on their professional experience by engaging critically with, and reflecting on, key developments in public administration in order to more effectively deliver public service outcomes in a rapidly changing environment.

The course is based on a philosophy of transformational learning and transformational change. Central to this is the role of public services in promoting social justice and equality. International examples will be used to provide thought provoking challenges to the way our public services are designed and delivered. Rather than reflect today’s public services, the state and society, this MPA aims to shape the public service landscape of tomorrow.

This MPA offers an excellent student experience and includes an innovative ‘leadership exchange’ element, working with the Association of Chief Officers of Scottish Voluntary Organisations (ACOSVO), to enable all students to participate in an appropriate exchange within another public service organisation.

Teaching, learning and assessment

The MPA offers options for both full-time and part-time study which will fit with busy working lives. This is a multidisciplinary course, with the purpose of preparing students for professional roles in the public sector. As such the delivery draws on academic expertise from a range of backgrounds such as administrative justice, public management and social policy. The input of research active academics will be complemented with expert guest speakers and visits to key public administration sites such as the Holyrood Parliament in Edinburgh, Houses of Parliament in London, Parlament de Catalunya in Barcelona and the European Parliament in Brussels.

Teaching hours and attendance

The amount of contact time will vary depending on whether you are studying on a part-time or full-time basis.

Links with industry/professional bodies

The ‘leadership exchange’ element of the course is delivered in association with the Association of Chief Officers of Scottish Voluntary Organisations (ACOSVO). We are also an institutional member of the Joint University Council’'s Public Administration Committee.

Modules

There is a range of core and optional modules from which you will need to complete 120 credits, plus the 60 credit dissertation module in order to complete the MPA. Module options include:
International Trends in Public Administration/ Gender and Equalities/ Leading Change in Public Services/ Workplace Learning/ Law and Public Administration/ Social Justice and Critical Perspectives on the State/ Information Governance and Data Protection/ Multilevel Governance in Europe.

Careers

In Scotland 21% of the workforce is employed in the public sector. This does not include the many private and Third sector organisations that help deliver vital public services. At a time of increasing pressure on public finances it is increasingly important that all those who support the delivery of our public services continue to develop their professional skills and knowledge.
