In a fast changing, global economy, the MSc will equip you to assess the wider interconnections between organisations and their local, national and international contexts. You will build up a solid understanding of key management practice and develop your critical insight.

This MSc is specifically designed for anyone who may be looking to complement their non-business degree and has little or no prior business background. Alternatively, you may have completed to ordinary degree level and be aiming to enhance your qualifications. You will study a range of modules and complete a community based project where you will work with either a commercial business, community, voluntary or social enterprise. You can study for the general MSc International Management and Leadership or tailor your studies with our routes in Events, Family and Smaller Enterprise, Hospitality and Tourism (as follows).

Teaching learning and assessment

You will attend lectures and seminars, work in groups and carry out independent learning. You will be expected to participate in discussions, develop ideas and engage with experiential learning. Assessment methods will include management reports, essays, web-based discussions, reflections on practice and group work with presentations. A central part of the course experience is the regular involvement with industry, through specific visits, guest speakers and events all of which provide valuable insights into practice, contemporary trends and thinking. Class sizes are normally 10-30.

Attendance requirements at QMU will depend on which module you are studying and whether you are full or part-time. What will I study?

A number of pathways are available on this MSc, allowing you to specialise in leadership and management development, third sector management or international management.

Modules common to all pathways cover topics such as business planning and financial resource allocation, the nature of leadership and management roles, the impact and influence of development interventions on the individual and organisation, and the relationship between strategy, organisational and national cultures.

You can tailor the MSc to explore the economic and social challenges facing modern organisations and consider the trends and development in management across different sectors. Alternatively, you can assess the impact of international politics and the need for a global perspective on management, or analyse the decision-making process within third sector governance and undertake a period of work-based learning.

Whichever pathway you choose, you will be introduced to a wide range of research methods and the methodologies applicable to management research as well as being supervised and supported through both conducting research and writing a dissertation.

How will I study?

The programme will be delivered through a hybrid approach that makes use of group sessions and one-to-one meetings. The modules may be delivered weekly, in block sessions, or by some other appropriate arrangements such as audio/video conferencing or online discussions as appropriate.

How will I be assessed?

Most modules are assessed through essays and other written research projects. The dissertation/research project is predominately assessed based on a 25,000-word written thesis.

Who will be teaching me?

This MSc is taught by highly motivated and experienced academics specialising in different areas of management research. All members of the programme team are active researchers engaged with projects at national and international level.

Some seminars will be delivered by external guest speakers from academia and industry. You will also be invited to attend a series of research seminars organised by the department and have the opportunity to present your own work within a supportive and nurturing environment.

The programme will equip you with the necessary skills to take up a senior position in public administration. You will acquire a mastery of the diverse range of problems that public administration professionals face in the contemporary socio-economic climate and an in-depth understanding of the contested nature of debates in social and public policy.

This programme develops key leadership and management skills for current managers and future leaders of organisations in the homelessness sector.

The course was developed by the University's School of Business School in collaboration with the London Housing Foundation (LHF), who are sponsoring the course. LHF may consider sponsoring applicants from relevant areas of the public sector as well as the third/voluntary sector.

The course is primarily designed for appropriately experience and qualified staff in the homelessness and allied sectors. The course also enables you to make a study visit to a similar sector in another country through the support of the London Housing Foundation.

The course will run throughout 2017 on a part-time basis. There'll be an initial residential from Tuesday 24 to Thursday 26 January followed by a combination of weekly attendance (9 weeks) each Thursday afternoon and three two-day blocks (Thursdays and Fridays) during each Semester.

• Leadership and Management (20 Credits)

This module covers different concepts of leadership and management focusing on what might be considered the more appropriate styles in the homelessness and housing context. There'll be opportunities to evaluate your own individual and organisational competences and for skill development using in-depth reflections.

Assessment
100% coursework but with two elements as follows:

Element 1 (40% weighting) – two examples of high level reflections of your leadership or managerial performance
Element 2 (60% weighting) – an individual written assignment applying relevant theoretical concepts to your organisation.

• Introduction to Accounting (10 credits)

This module provides you with a knowledge of basic concepts and practices in accounting, an understanding of accounting requirements in third sector organisations and an appreciation of good practice in financial reporting.

Assessment
100% coursework based on a case study.

• Third Sector Organisational Development (20 Credits)

This module explores theories, techniques and knowledge in the area of Organisational Behaviour and People Management relevant to homelessness and housing organisations.

Assessment
100% Coursework but with two elements:

Element 1: (80% weighting) assignment based in students’ own organisation
Element 2: (20% weighting) individual presentation on recommendations from element 1.

• Governance (10 Credits)

This module enables managers, of third sector and other civil society organisations, to reflect on and understand the role of governance in ensuring accountability within their organisations.

100% coursework: individual presentation on a governance scenario using digital story book.

The weighted pass mark across the modules 50%. Where there are multiple assessments, a 40% minimum pass on each element is a necessary condition of an overall pass. It's necessary to pass all the modules to be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate.

What you’ll study

Gender studies is a multi-disciplinary field dealing intersectionally with various social and cultural dimensions.

Reflecting this, the MSc Applied Gender Studies combines interdisciplinary core courses on gender theory, feminist research and the history of feminist thought, with optional classes within a range of disciplinary traditions.

Strathclyde has particular strengths in feminist and queer approaches within Journalism and Media Studies, English Literature, History, Creative Writing, Education, Politics and International Relations, Criminology and Social Policy.

This course comprises of three core courses:

  • Understanding Gender
  • Feminist Knowledge, Feminist Research
  • Feminisms – Continuity & Change

These core modules focus on providing students with an interdisciplinary frame for the critical study of gender that is underpinned by feminist theory and acknowledges the ways in which gender informs – and is informed by – other structural inequalities.

Understanding how feminist theory, research and activism has developed over time is a key element of the degree, and our core courses include visits to Glasgow Women’s Library to learn about feminist archiving and work with their original collections.

Collectively, these courses equip students with a knowledge and understanding of key feminist debates about ontology, epistemology and methodology, and enable them to identify both commonalities and differences in the ways these debates have been taken up in different disciplinary contexts over time.

Students also take three optional courses chosen from a range of modules. These are updated annually and may include:

The Gender Studies Research Placement and Advanced Topics in Gender Studies options run every year. You'll also complete a Gender Studies dissertation. We're well placed to supervise projects aligned to a range of disciplinary interests and using diverse methodologies.

In addition to the MSc Applied Gender Studies, we also offer the MSc Applied Gender Studies (Research Methods) which is the recommended route for students intending to apply for a PhD in the Social Sciences.

Students on this programme take core modules Feminist Knowledge and Research, Advanced Topics in Gender Studies, Perspectives on Social Research, Quantitative Methods and Qualitative Methods.

Students following this route take only one of the optional courses listed above and similarly complete a dissertation.

Research placement

The Research Placement option provides students with the opportunity to put their Gender Studies learning and research training into practice in a real-world environment.

Students conduct a piece of research according to a brief produced in consultation with the host organisation.

The course team have established links with potential placement providers - in Glasgow and beyond - from the feminist third sector and a range of organisations committed to gender equality in arts, culture and sport.

Examples of organisations we have links with include Women in Journalism, Engender, Glasgow Women’s Library, Zero Tolerance, Rape Crisis Scotland, Women’s Support Project, Scottish Football Association, The Parliament Project and the National Union of Journalists.

Learning & teaching

The core courses are delivered in weekly seminars where there is an emphasis on student participation and engagement.

On both Feminist Knowledge, Feminist Research and Feminisms – Continuity and Change, some of our classes are held at Glasgow Women’s Library.

Assessment

The assessment is all in the form of coursework, with a range of assessments designed to allow students to demonstrate different research and writing skills.

All the core courses have more than one assessment point so that receiving and responding to feedback is built in to the course design. Optional modules are taught and assessed in a variety of ways.

On the Research Placement module, students will deliver their research in a form agreed in advance with the Placement provider so as to best meet their needs and provide the student with the opportunity to develop skills in delivering research in real world contexts.

That’s why the public sector of the future needs experts who combine knowledge in public administration and public management on the one hand, and information systems and eGovernance on the other hand. The Erasmus Mundus Master of Science in Public Sector Innovation and eGovernance (PIONEER) is a new and unique programme delivering those experts.

What is the Master of Public Sector Innovation and eGovernance all about?

Experience our excellent research-based education in an international student group, providing you all the opportunities for a rich learning experience. A specific focus is placed on the use of case studies; the emphasis is placed on how new problems in the field of public administration and public policy can be solved through the use of (technological) innovations. Moreover, specific courses are built to help you increase your international experience and interdisciplinary expertise. Added value is created by giving attention to the practical challenges of professionals in policy, administrative and consultative functions.

PIONEER is:

  1. new Erasmus Mundus programme, subsidized by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency of the European Commission;
  2. An interdisciplinary programme combining the expertise of the fields of Public Administration, Public Management, Information Systems and eGovernance;
  3. An international initial Master of 120 ECTS, organized jointly by the University of Leuven, the University of Münster and the Tallinn University of Technology. The programme will allow you to study in at least three different countries, starting in Leuven for the 1st semester, continuing in Münster for the 2nd semester and in Tallinn for the 3rd semester. You will dedicate the final semester to your Master Thesis and can decide – according to your desired field of specialization – where to write it.

Structure

The main objective of the PIONEER programme is to provide students with specialised competencies about public sector innovation and the role of ICT and technological evolutions in the innovation process. This is a joint master programme between 3 universities in Europe aimed at both addressing state-of-the art expertise in Public Administration, Information Systems and eGovernance and building bridges between these fields.

Each university will offer courses with a total workload of 30 ECTS. Students start in the first semester at the KU Leuven with courses on Public Administration and Management, a general introduction in the use of information systems in the public sector and an introduction into eGovernance practices.

In the second semester students will move to the University of Münster where they gain insights into the use of ICT in relevant business processes, ICT projects, new approaches of service delivery and the possibilities of ICT for governance purposes.

In the third semester, students move to Tallinn University of Technology to gain in-depth knowledge on the potential benefits, risks, factors of failure/success of eGovernance, the role of eGovernance towards society and trends in public sector innovation. By this semester students will have received enough expertise on Public Administration and Information Systems to reflect from both fields, in an integrated way, on eGovernance and the use of ICT for public sector innovation.

In the fourth semester the students will concentrate on their master thesis (30 ECTS). The master thesis can have two tracks: students can choose to do an internship in a professional organization being an integral part of their master thesis, or they can conduct research at a research institute. All courses are obligatory.

The Psychological Research Methods (Cognition and Neuropsychology) course provides broad training in the fundamentals of psychological science - the modern approach to studying mind and behaviour. The primary aim of the course is to provide advanced training as a preparation for a research career in Psychology. The course develops the theoretical understanding and practical and interpersonal skills required for carrying out research. Postgraduates are an integral part of our research community. Students are based in a dedicated MSc office, or within an appropriate research group, and allocated a peer mentor. Students have an academic supervisor in Psychology who supports and guides their development - including the research dissertation project. Delivery and assessment

Teaching is delivered using a variety of methods including tutorials, demonstrations and practical classes, but the majority is seminar-based.

Students are typically taught in small groups in specialist classes, with first-year PhD students or other postgraduate students (for example, in modules from other MSc courses).

The individual module components provide 60 percent of the MSc grade, with the research dissertation contributing the remaining 40 percent.

Social Work (Research Methods) offers students with an interest in social work research the opportunity to learn about key issues in this area while they develop the skills required to carry out their own research, at an advanced level.

The course offers an attractive Masters qualification and individual modules will offer a Continued Professional Development option for social work practitioners who wish to critically evaluate their own practice. A social work qualification is not necessary to take this programme. Students will benefit from a vibrant learning environment that draws on a range of professional expertise.

What you'll study

The programme is offered on a full time (12 months) and part time (24 months basis) and students will complete six modules and a dissertation. The first three modules are offered on a faculty wide basis, hence students will benefit from a multi-disciplinary approach and will share learning with students from a range of backgrounds.

Major projects

Students will complete a 12,000-word dissertation in an area of their choice that relates to social work research. Assessments in other modules will prepare students to undertake the dissertation by requiring them to think in-depth about a range of methodological and ethical issues.

Students will be matched with a supervisor who has expertise in their chosen area. Supervisors will support students to develop a range of strategic links across relevant organisations including government departments, local authorities and third sector organisations.

Guest lectures

This course is taught by staff with expertise in undertaking social work research with a range of service user groups including children and families, those with mental health problems and learning disabilities and criminal justice service users. Guest lectures will be given by 'users' of social work research including policy makers, service managers, social workers and people who use social work services.

Learning & teaching

The course will be delivered primarily using a lecture and workshop format. Where relevant, there will also be a range of field trips to visit key stakeholders in social work research.

Assessment

Each module will be assessed using a range of methods including essays, case studies and projects. Assignments are tailored to allow students to develop expertise around particular areas of interest. Assignments will allow students to develop knowledge that will contribute directly to their 12,000-word dissertation.

Careers

Graduates with a Masters degree in Social Work (Research Methods) will be able to choose between two distinct career paths:

  • a career in senior management within a local authority or other social work organisation including within policy and planning divisions of these organisations
  • a career in social research within research organisations, charities, pressure/ lobbying groups, independent or third sector organisations, academic research, central and local government

Given that this programme fulfils ESRC training requirements for subject specific research training, it is also likely that many graduates will use this qualification as a platform to PhD study.

This module critically examines the key elements of strategic marketing and its interface with business strategy.

This module provides a solid foundation for writing and factual story-telling as well as verbal communication within a marketing and PR context.

- Managing Professional Development
The aim of this module is to support personal and professional development for a business related professional career.

- Third Sector & Political Public Relations
This module critically evaluates the PR practice within the public/political sector. It accordingly examines how PR is utilised by third sector organisations, such as pressure groups, charities, trade unions and social enterprises, as well as political parties.

- Campaign Planning for Marketing & PR
The aim of this module is to enable you to understand the key constructs associated with campaign planning for marketing and PR, notably the use of digital technology.

- Research Methods
The aim of this module is to develop your understanding and skills of research in a management and/or professional development context, focusing on a critical review of research methodologies and methods.

- Management Project
This module introduces you to the intellectual and scholarly requirements of producing an extended piece of written postgraduate research.

Learning and teaching methods

Full-time students study each subject intensively over a period of several weeks. Part-time delivery is designed around the needs of practicing marketing managers and PR professionals. You will learn through lectures, seminars, group work, case studies, and analyses of communications materials and networks, as well as specialist guest lecturers from leading professionals. The course also includes potential for a site visit to a media communications organisation.

Through our series of guest lecturers delivered by leading industry experts, you can also gain up to the moment insights into the challenges and practices pertinent to image management and PR planning.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

The skills you will gain on the MSc Public Relations course will allow you to help your employer or company gain a competitive edge by managing meaningful relationships through PR. You will also gain the latest intelligence about social networking, new communication techniques and how to manage new and emerging digital channels.

Students will typically be offered the opportunity to meet representatives from PR companies who offer internships by way of guest talks. In addition, the University of South Wales Careers and Employability Service helps students with all aspects of careers and employability. Services range from individual advice and guidance on CVs & applications, interviews, work experience, internships, volunteering, practical support with job hunting and working/studying overseas.

As a student of this course you will have access to help and advice from a dedicated student area on the CIPR website on starting your career within the public relations industry.

Assessment methods

Assessment is assignment-based, so you can explore each subject to develop your critical and analytical skills. The final requirement is a dissertation or business research project, where you will examine an aspect of PR in depth.

This programme has been designed primarily for international students who are government officers or who have work experience in social policy areas. This programme starts from an examination of UK social policy, with opportunities to examine the experiences of, and challenges facing other countries, as well as study UK social policy in depth. It includes a work-based placement within one or more public, private or third sector organisations in the West Midlands area. Policy into Practice is also offered without a work-based placement.

Course details

This programme is part of a suite of programmes designed primarily for international students who are government officers or policy officers, researchers or practitioners in non-governmental organisations who have work experience in social policy areas. The study of Policy into Practice concerns the development and nature of government interventions aimed at ensuring the welfare needs of their populations are met, and the ways those interventions are put into effect. Starting from an examination of UK social policy, the programme widens out to examine the experience and challenges facing other countries. The programmes include the opportunity to have a work-based placement within one or more public, private or third sector organisation in the West Midlands area.

The programme introduces students to the study of Social Policy and Practice and considers current and future political, economic and demographic contexts of policy making around the world.

Specialist option in health policy

Students can now study an MA or PGDiploma in Policy into Practice with Integrated Placement (Health) which has a particular focus on heath policies and interventions. Developed in collaboration with the Health Services Management Centre (HSMC) the programmes cover UK health policy, as well as the experiences of, and challenges facing, other countries in relation to health policy and population health and wellbeing. The programme has been designed for national and local government officers, as well as officers of non-governmental organisations who are involved in health policy-making or delivering health services in countries other than the UK. Students take a combination of modules on social policy and health services management. For module options please see the course brochure. The MA includes a 20 week work-based placement in a non-clinical health setting, and the PG Diploma includes an 8 week work based placement in a non-clinical health setting.

Learning and teaching

All participants will be supported by a personal tutor and will also be able to draw on the support of the Department's Programme Director, Welfare Tutors and International Student Tutors.

Work-based placements

Work-based placements are sought in discussion with the student and every effort is made to find a placement which will suit the student and provide a valuable learning experience for both the student and the organisation.

Participants will also benefit from access to e-learning resources as well as the University's main library and student services.

Employability

Our graduates come from the UK and from a wide range of other nations including Chile, China, Cyprus, Japan, Poland, South Korea, Indonesia and Taiwan. Our graduates have gone on to careers in the public and non-governmental sectors as civil servants, policy analysts, practitioners and social researchers. Others have continued with Doctoral level study.
