The Civil Society, NGO and Non-profit Studies PDip/MA provides you with an advanced understanding of social science debates, theories and concepts relevant to organised civil society.

Strengthening the profile and capacity of civil society is now seen as a top priority by political commentators, social scientists and policy-makers all over the world. There has never been a greater need to develop a critical yet constructive understanding of the actions, behaviours and institutions that populate the space between states and markets, ranging from local voluntary associations to national social enterprises and transnational charities.

This programme draws deeply on the unique combination of scholarly and practical knowledge of the third sector, social movements and philanthropy situated in the School. You develop an in-depth understanding of the evolution of the meanings of civil society across time and space and the role its organisations and institutions play in political, social and economic life.

Teaching imparts country-specific as well as cross-national and transnational empirical and theoretical knowledge of the historical and contemporary challenges faced by these organisations.

You are also engaged in analysing how third sector organisations relate to ongoing social, political and economic transformations. In particular, your capacity to think sympathetically, but critically, about third sector contributions to policy through welfare systems and in other public policy arenas is developed.

Essentially, its purpose is to enhance the capacity of organisations, and the people within them, to successfully execute tasks and achieve specific work outcomes through effective leadership.

This MSc is for experienced graduates in management, or related areas, who are looking to enhance their subject knowledge and develop advanced research skills. The programme is particularly suitable if you are aspiring to a career with a significant focus on management and/or organisational development.

What will I study?

A number of pathways are available on this MSc, allowing you to specialise in leadership and management development, third sector management or international management.

Modules common to all pathways cover topics such as business planning and financial resource allocation, the nature of leadership and management roles, the impact and influence of development interventions on the individual and organisation, and the relationship between strategy, organisational and national cultures.

You can tailor the MSc to explore the economic and social challenges facing modern organisations and consider the trends and development in management across different sectors. Alternatively, you can assess the impact of international politics and the need for a global perspective on management, or analyse the decision-making process within third sector governance and undertake a period of work-based learning.

Whichever pathway you choose, you will be introduced to a wide range of research methods and the methodologies applicable to management research as well as being supervised and supported through both conducting research and writing a dissertation.

How will I study?

The programme will be delivered through a hybrid approach that makes use of group sessions and one-to-one meetings. The modules may be delivered weekly, in block sessions, or by some other appropriate arrangements such as audio/video conferencing or online discussions as appropriate.

How will I be assessed?

Most modules are assessed through essays and other written research projects. The dissertation/research project is predominately assessed based on a 25,000-word written thesis.

Who will be teaching me?

This MSc is taught by highly motivated and experienced academics specialising in different areas of management research. All members of the programme team are active researchers engaged with projects at national and international level.

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) is an internationally recognised professional postgraduate degree, which is a public sector equivalent to the Master of Business Administration (MBA). The course is targeted primarily at public service and third sector professionals. The content is relevant to both international students and those based in the UK.

The aim of the MPA is to enable learners to build on their professional experience by engaging critically with, and reflecting on, key developments in public administration in order to more effectively deliver public service outcomes in a rapidly changing environment.

The course is based on a philosophy of transformational learning and transformational change. Central to this is the role of public services in promoting social justice and equality. International examples will be used to provide thought provoking challenges to the way our public services are designed and delivered. Rather than reflect today’s public services, the state and society, this MPA aims to shape the public service landscape of tomorrow.

This MPA offers an excellent student experience and includes an innovative ‘leadership exchange’ element, working with the Association of Chief Officers of Scottish Voluntary Organisations (ACOSVO), to enable all students to participate in an appropriate exchange within another public service organisation.

The MPA offers options for both full-time and part-time study which will fit with busy working lives. This is a multidisciplinary course, with the purpose of preparing students for professional roles in the public sector. As such the delivery draws on academic expertise from a range of backgrounds such as administrative justice, public management and social policy. - Dr Emily Glorney is a Registered Forensic Psychologist with over 15 years of experience working in forensic practice and conducting research across secure hospitals and prisons. Emily is currently working on collaborative research projects with Broadmoor Hospital, exploring the meaning of religion and sprituality in the recovery pathways of patients and developing a quantitative observation system for the alerting of aggressive and violent behaviour.

- Professor Rosie Meek is a Chartered Psychologist and prison researcher, conducting qualitative and quantitative research throughout the UK and internationally. She works closely with a range of Criminal Justice agencies, including prisons and Immigration Removal Centres, a broad range of third sector organisations that work directly with offenders, and the Ministry of Justice. Her specialisms include prison healthcare and education, the role of the voluntary sector in reducing reoffending and promoting desistance, and the evaluation of prison-based interventions and programmes. Dr Meek’s most recent book ‘Sport in Prison’ has been used by those responsible for developing physical activity policy in prisons in England and Wales.

- Dr Laura Mickes is a Cognitive Psychologist who specialises in modelling human memory. Laura was part of the team that developed a widely-used statistical method for use in eyewitness identification research. Her current research is dedicated to identifying and developing procedures that enhance eyewitness accuracy, where she works with Identification Officers at the Metropolitan Police.

- Professor Amina Memon is a Chartered Psychologist with over 25 years of experience in higher education and research. Her research in the area of psychology and law spans cognitive, social and forensic domains. Her work is firmly grounded in policy and practice, for example she studies how to maximise the accuracy, truthfulness and credibility of witness statements, has contributed to training of the police and judiciary and has served as an expert witness in family court cases and criminal trials. Professor Memon’s background in human rights had led to her extending her research to third sector organisations such as Asylum Aid, Plan UK and Freedom From Torture.

- Dr David La Rooy is a Chartered Psychologist. He is an internationally recognised memory expert, expert in investigative interviewing techniques, and conducts research that has influenced the training of child forensic interviewers, the police, lawyers and judges around the world in how best to interview victims of child abuse. He has co-edited two volumes for the 'Wiley Series in the Psychology of Crime, Policing and Law.'

Course content and structure

The programme is made up of the following six core courses (Four delivered in the Autumn term and two in the Spring term) and the dissertation which is undertaken throughout the year.

The programme confers Stage 1 of a two-stage process of professional training in forensic psychology that is assessed by the British Psychological Society (the second stage of professional training is subsequent and external to the MSc Forensic Psychology programme at Royal Holloway). International students would be welcome on the programme of study.

The British Psychological Society requires that core knowledge domains are incorporated into the course so as to reflect the diversity of research and practice in forensic psychology. The unique selling point and emphasis of the programme at Royal Holloway is defined by the multidisciplinarity of the teaching (jointly by forensic psychologists and those carrying out research relevant to forensic psychology in the departments of Psychology and Law) and the research strengths of both departments.

The impetus for the MSc Global Healthcare Management programme stems from recognition, nationally and internationally, of the need to build leadership and management capabilities for those wishing to pursue careers within health care, social care and third sector organisations. Its rationale stems from the recognition, nationally and globally of the unique challenges and complexities that face the next generation of managers and leaders of health and social care systems across the world and the need to build leadership capability.

The MSc Global Healthcare Management programme has been carefully designed, drawing on the expertise of health, social care and leadership and management from within the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health to enhance students’ personal/professional attributes, abilities to think creatively and apply entrepreneurial skills, in leading the delivery of quality health and social care services and responding to the global health challenges now and in the future. Interdisiciplinary learning is a feature of the programme with students studying alongside their peers on other MSc programmes delivered within the faculty.

The MSc Global Healthcare Management with Professional Experience, is an extended full-time Masters programme with a substantive professional experience component. Within the professional experience modules, students have the option of undertaking an internship with an external organisation or, campus-based professional experience. Interprofessional learning across a range of modules, in which students will learn alongside their peers on other health and social care related MSc programmes in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health.

As part of the programme, students will complete the Global Professional Development module which has been developed in collaboration with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) affording students who meet the CMI evidence requirements a Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership and a Level 7 Award in Professional Consulting. Successful completion of the module will also enable students to apply for Chartered Manager status via the qualified route.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will study a range of modules which provide a detailed understanding of leadership and management combined with examination of contemporary and global challenges within healthcare management.

The course will feature a range of current and management theories relevant to the health and social care sectors. In addition, it will also explore multi-cultural and international dimensions of healthcare management. The programme will also develop students’ entrepreneurial skills and offer support with seeking employment opportunities.

The Psychological Research Methods (Cognition and Neuropsychology) course provides broad training in the fundamentals of psychological science - the modern approach to studying mind and behaviour. The course combines training in psychological theory with practical skills development, preparing our students for a future career in psychology. Individual modules provide a thorough introduction to quantitative and qualitative research, the analysis and interpretation of data, and a critical skeptical approach to psychological science.

Opportunities for practical hands-on skills development are built in, ranging from low-tech observational assessment to high-tech eye-tracking, and including training on giving oral presentations. A self-reflective approach to personal development is encouraged, and students on this course are an integral part of Stirling Psychology's research community, housed within a dedicated MSc office. Course objectives

The primary aim of the course is to provide advanced training as a preparation for a research career in Psychology. The course develops the theoretical understanding and practical and interpersonal skills required for carrying out research. Postgraduates are an integral part of our research community. Students are based in a dedicated MSc office, or within an appropriate research group, and allocated a peer mentor. Students have an academic supervisor in Psychology who supports and guides their development - including the research dissertation project. Our aim is to encourage students to make the complex transition to become a fully independent research scientist.

Delivery and assessment

Teaching is delivered using a variety of methods including tutorials, demonstrations and practical classes, but the majority is seminar-based.

Students are typically taught in small groups in specialist classes, with first-year PhD students or other postgraduate students (for example, in modules from other MSc courses).

The individual module components provide 60 percent of the MSc grade, with the research dissertation contributing the remaining 40 percent.

This course will attract people holding an undergraduate honours degree who may want to change career to become an occupational therapist. It is an intensive course of study which will develop theoretical, analytical, practical and evaluative and reasoning skills.

Occupational therapists assess people’s disengagement from their occupations and provide ways for them to re-engage in their occupational roles or provide alternatives in order to improve their quality of life. Modules reflect the nature of occupational therapy, which is concerned with the relationship between people’s occupations and their health. The course prepares graduates to work in diverse practice contexts.

Teaching, learning and assessment

This course uses a wide range of learning and teaching methods, focusing on the person-centred nature of the work of an occupational therapist. Problem-based learning using case studies is a major feature with students working independently and collaboratively. Your performance will be assessed by a variety of methods including case studies, essays, projects and presentations. Practice education forms a core element of the course and your personal performance is also assessed. There are four placements in total (placement 1 – full-time 6 weeks, Placement 2 – part-time 17 weeks, placement 3 – part-time 14 weeks, Placement 4 – part-time 17
weeks). There may be additional travel costs for all placements and an accommodation cost for placement 1.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module which you study on campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. The PgDip academic modules require you to attend from 9.15am – 6.15pm.

You should be aware that services may operate over seven working days. Placement may involve evening and weekend attendance. All students are required to purchase professional indemnity insurance.

Links with industry/professional bodies

You can apply for membership of the College of Occupational Therapists and eligibility to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council to work as an occupational therapist.

Our goal is to help you develop into critical and reflective public health practitioners who have strong problem solving skills while being able to implement creative solutions. Consequently there is a high emphasis on student participation in all modules with a self-directed approach to learning being essential if you are to achieve the aims of the course within the one year timeframe. Our expectation is that you are active and engaged learners. Staff will expect you to attend class thoroughly prepared having reviewed the relevant directed study. This programme starts from an examination of UK social policy, with opportunities to examine the experiences of, and challenges facing other countries, as well as study UK social policy in depth. It includes a work-based placement within one or more public, private or third sector organisations in the West Midlands area. Policy into Practice is also offered without a work-based placement.

This programme is part of a suite of programmes designed primarily for international students who are government officers or policy officers, researchers or practitioners in non-governmental organisations who have work experience in social policy areas. The study of Policy into Practice concerns the development and nature of government interventions aimed at ensuring the welfare needs of their populations are met, and the ways those interventions are put into effect. Starting from an examination of UK social policy, the programme widens out to examine the experience and challenges facing other countries. The programmes include the opportunity to have a work-based placement within one or more public, private or third sector organisation in the West Midlands area.

Specialist option in health policy

Good governance helps organisations to improve and deliver high quality services, through leadership, direction and control; whilst ensuring that the organisation is accountable to its stakeholders – both for spending money and achieving outcomes.

This course will be particularly of interest to members of public boards who are involved in the scrutiny and review aspects of organisations, whether their focus lies within health care, education or even housing services. It will also be of interest to middle and senior officers working in public and third sector organisations seeking to improve their governance skills.

The course has been developed by the Public Services team at the University of South Wales in collaboration with Cardiff Council, the Centre for Public Scrutiny and Academi Wales. It has carefully been designed to provide you with the systematic knowledge and skills that are highly sought from employers.

What you will study

The PgC in Governance comprises of three 20 credit modules which are compulsory for all students studying the course. Each module can be studied on a ‘stand alone’ basis under the University’s Associate Student (Governance) programme.

Modules of study include:
- Governance and Scrutiny – This module is concerned with governing structures and the activity of the board. It looks at the processes surrounding governance, issues such as accountability and regulation, and joint and shared governance arrangements.

-Political Awareness – The focus of this module is the concepts of political awareness, public and political leadership, and the significance of politics on a local and national level.

- Understanding and Challenging Performance – Helping you to understand and improve upon the performance of your organisation, this module will explore a range of performance criteria for reviewing and assessing performance.

Learning and teaching methods

The Postgraduate Certificate in Governance comprises of a combination of classroom-based teaching and work-based learning. You will be required to attend approximately 10 days of classroom sessions which will take place in the form of block delivery (involving a few days study at a time). For each module, there are three days of supported learning (with added time for course induction). There are no set delivery dates, but it is likely that there will be two start dates for this award per year. In addition to this, you will be expected to undertake self directed learning and reflection to include completing an individual and organisational analysis, guided reading and assignment work.

During your studies you will participate in interactive learning and teaching methods such as presentations, flip charts, individual and group work, reviews of data and role play. All of these methods will have a clear link to the workplace.

Throughout your studies you will be given the opportunity to attend guest lecturers from speakers who have previously included politicians and senior leaders from across the public sector.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

This course has been specifically designed to develop key governance knowledge and associated skills in those who are working in this role in a range of public service and third sector fields. If you are seeking to work in governance roles, this course is focused on the development of relevant skills to enable you access relevant positions.

This is a postgraduate course and on completion, you will easily be able to move on to a Postgraduate Diploma and then on to a Masters award.

Assessment methods

You will undertake a range of innovative assessments methods that have been specifically designed to be ‘workplace relevant’; focusing on building key scrutiny and governance knowledge, skills and competencies which are relevant to your current job role.

Through assessments you will be required to demonstrate a range of academic and subject-specific skills, particularly research, problem solving and critical thinking. You will be assessed through a variety of coursework and presentations that are related to the workplace.

This Master's programme provides an advanced critical insight into current developments in the study of migration, organised crime and human trafficking. It's one of few programmes worldwide to offer you the chance to study the main characteristics of modern forms of slavery, their causes/roots, impacts, and ways (legal and others) of fighting/preventing them.

The degree is unique in examining, in an interdisciplinary manner, the intersection between human trafficking and migratory flows, and forced labour, and organised crime.

The programme combines vocational and theoretical components. You'll study the social conditions in which human trafficking occurs, including wealth, social and gender inequalities; migration due to political instability, war and poverty; and the role of criminal gangs and organised crime groups in the proliferation of this crime in recent years. The modus operandi of traffickers and their networks will be explored as will the challenges raised by the role in family members and communities in this increasingly complex issue.

You'll also engage critically with existing legal frameworks and policing in place to combat human trafficking. The degree also offers te chance to examine different discourses used to analyse the issue including debates about terminology, media representations, effectiveness of anti-trafficking policies and the efficacy of rescue and rehabilitation programmes.

Why St Mary's?

The MA programme is part of a wider commitment to addressing modern slavery and human trafficking through the work of the Centre for the Study of Modern Slavery, established at St Mary’s in 2015. The Centre was founded to develop an evidence based response to addressing the current intensification of human trafficking and slavery cases globally. It is part of the Santa Marta Group and has links to many external partners including Kevin Hyland, the UK’s first Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner and Visiting Professor at St Mary’s University, policy makers, police, other academic institutions, safe houses, campaigners, international organizations and NGOs. Students on the MA in Human Trafficking, Migration and Organised Crime will have access to the resources of the centre, including cutting edge research and lectures by high profile experts in the field.

An inaugural conference, which took place in February 2017, was the first of an annual event, organised by the Centre for the Study of Modern Slavery. With the aim of using research to fill the knowledge and evidence gaps experienced by policymakers and practitioners, the conference provides a space to promote debate and encourage collaboration on addressing the subject of human trafficking and modern slavery, with contributions from UK and international experts. Discussions between policymakers, practitioners and researchers will identify evidence gaps and tailor research to these needs. All MA students will be encouraged to engage with and contribute to future conferences and may choose to evaluate the experience and learning as part of their assessed work.

Your learning

The course has three parts:

- Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits):
Includes an overview and introduction to the key aspects of later life, including physical, psychological, social, political, and relationship issues. Core modules are Understanding Later Life, Research in Health and Social Care, and Frailty in Later Life. You will be introduced to research at this stage.

- Postgraduate Diploma (60 credits):
The core Independent Study module is the foundation for the Masters dissertation year. Option modules currently available are Dementia Care Principles, Delivering Compassionate Care and Complexities of Pain.

- MSc (180 credits):
You will complete a supervised dissertation (worth 60 credits) in a subject relevant to adults in later life

This programme will prepare experienced professionals to embrace the challenges of autonomous practice, decision-making and leadership necessary for this important sector. It is recognised that advanced and specialised knowledge is needed to support the increasingly blended and integrated roles that professionals will adopt in supporting older people.

Current students include occupational therapists, integrated discharge facilitators, care home and assistant care home managers and charge nurses.

State-of-the-art facilities

Our campuses are equipped with artificial simulated environments with contemporary healthcare technology, where you’ll learn in a realistic context, to put your knowledge into practice. The unpredictability of patient symptoms are mimicked using sophisticated software in a clinical ward setting, ranging from low to high dependency beds.

Investment in the Domus Initiative – an older adult artificial home environment – provides you with experience in caring for older people and dementia care. In a first for the Scottish university sector, we have established A Community Orientated Resource for Nursing (ACORN) where students can practice within a simulated primary care environment.

Lanarkshire and Paisley campuses also provide midwifery students with excellent learning and teaching environments with facilities and equipment that includes a birthing room with maternal simulator and a birthing pool for simulated water births.

Life-changing research

We work jointly with a range of partners, both nationally and internationally, on our research interests, and this directly informs teaching at UWS – which means that you’ll learn from the experts.

Our programmes are informed by practice and all of our academic staff are members of the School’s Institute of Healthcare Policy and

• the launch of a new resource, ‘Jenny’s Diary’, which will provide an invaluable tool for families and practitioners to help people with a learning disability understand their diagnosis of dementia

• the launch of Dumfries & Galloway Recovery College – the first of its kind in Scotland – which offers short courses designed to enhance self-belief, identify ambitions and encourage learning
