Ecological Design Thinking

Never has there been a more important time for a new approach for engaging with the challenging situations we face from the local to the global levels. In a rapidly changing dynamic situation, solutions rarely remain optimal for very long and continuous active participation is a necessary ingredient for success. Growing resilience in individuals and communities is the way to keep going despite the continuous change around us.

Our programme in Ecological Design Thinking embraces and explores this complex world of interactions with lively engagement and an optimistic approach. It offers powerful, practical and ecology-centred skills and knowledge to apply to a diverse range of practices from design, education and business to the more specific roles of leadership, management and consultancy.

The Ecological Design Thinking programme is trans-disciplinary, insightful and universal in its application; pragmatic and integrative in its operation. It brings together theoretical and practical discourses on ecologically inspired design, with methods of design thinking that are merged with the latest developments in anthropology, psychology and socio- political economics. It aims to create a novel ground for change makers at the forefront of our transition to sustainable societies.

Ecologically inspired design includes the study of ecological worldviews, systems dynamics and applied complexity theory alongside the philosophies and practices of permaculture and biomimetic design.

Design thinking is a well-established participatory technique grounded in the empathic understanding of the feelings, experiences and emotions of others. It engages people in lively conversations, visually stimulated interactions and playful prototyping. It frames problems as opportunities, forms insights and generates creative and collaborative solutions in complex situations.

The Ecological Design thinking programme aims to provide a nourishing environment for participants by incorporating short-courses led by internationally recognised thinkers, place-making projects in collaboration with the Dartington Hall Trust, the home of Schumacher College, and short placements offered by external partner organisations.

This programme is the fourth radical postgraduate programme developed at Schumacher College and contributes to and enhance the College’s ongoing collaborative inquiry into sustainable living – a live and networked inquiry of practice underway around the world by the College’s 20,000 alumni and others.

Who is this course for?

We would be delighted to receive your application whether you are coming directly from an undergraduate degree, taking time-out to study mid-career or wanting an opportunity to develop your understanding of a practice that is of great importance to all of our futures. We encourage applications from community practitioners and activists as well as planners, educators, architects, politicians and policy makers. You do not necessarily need a first degree in design to apply for this course. You only need to be enthusiastic, resilient and committed.

It’s a highly focused course that gives you a thorough understanding of the key practices surrounding simulating and evaluating radiation doses for radiotherapy.

You gain an in-depth understanding of current and future radiotherapy planning issues and, crucially, develop the ability to apply critical thinking skills to practice. You gain general critical thinking and literature skills as well as more specific planning theory and plan evaluation skills.

Your studies cover core modules involving fundamental planning theories, plan evaluation, advanced planning and image guided radiotherapy. We also introduce you to research skills, which you use to produce a final dissertation.

The course is delivered using our virtual learning environment, known as Blackboard. You don't need to attend the university and you can study via the web in your own time, which means you can fit the course around your clinical work. On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

- Conduct a comprehensive literature search using all available resources of seminal and recent research in a specified topic
- Analyse, synthesise and summarise information critically, including published research or reports, and write a well-constructed and concise scientific report.0
- Explain the principles of, and apply in practice, techniques used in nutritional sciences research;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between nutrition and the development of disease and disorders;
- Demonstrate the importance of nutrition to facilitate optimum physical and mental development and maintenance of health throughout life;
- Apply critical thinking skills to solve problems in nutrition;
- Communicate effectively on nutrition-related issues with different stakeholders;
- Demonstrate the capacity to undertake lifelong learning.

Format

The course content of the PG Dip Nutritional Science is adjusted to each individual students needs therefore it is impossible to quantify contact hours precisely. This PG Dip programme is a challenging course and is intended to be full time. Students are expected to attend lectures or be engaged in their research from 9 am to 5 pm each working day from September to May.

Modules will be chosen with the approval of the Programme Board depending on the student's background. Students take 60 credits.

The emphasis of the course is the development of critical thinking skills and their application to concrete research problems and issues. The modules are wide ranging covering a broad base of academic subjects in law, humanities and social sciences.

What happens on the course?

The course consists of both taught and research elements, with modules covering the philosophy and ethics of research, quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and the application of computerised and virtual research techniques.

The course culminates with an option to produce a piece of independent, original research, guided by a supervisor with expertise in your chosen area of study or to complete a grant funding proposal for potential development as a research project at MPhil or PhD level.

The course aims to give trainee teachers the confidence and skills needed to become successful teachers of Drama. It providesa firm foundation in understanding the teaching and learning process which is essential for the development of excellent professional classroom skills and high teaching standards.

Trainees are introduced to a range of essential teaching skills such as lesson planning and preparation, questioning, explaining, marking pupils’ work, preparing resources, classroom management and control strategies in order to produce efficient,enthusiastic and creative teachers of Drama. I.C.T. provides opportunities to enhance delivery in the classroom and features as an important element of the course.

Trainees are expected to actively participate in the course;for example delivering micro lessons, creating resources, developing thinking skills and experimenting with new ideas for teaching Drama.

The study of the practical and theoretical aspects of Drama are core to the university-based course. Students are introduced to methods of class management within the drama studio and explore the use of various stimuli for class activities at Key Stage 3 and 4.
