Mechanical engineering combines scientific principles, mathematics and realisation. Scientific principles underpin all aspects of engineering, while mathematics is the language used to quantify and optimise solutions. Realisation encapsulates the whole range of creative abilities which distinguish the engineer from the scientist; that is, to conceive, make and actually bring to fruition something which has never existed before.
The course comprises advanced topics in mechanical engineering, with modules that have been developed to complement departmental research, along with our strong industrial links. Modules and projects are delivered by academic staff who have international expertise in their discipline.

Engineering is an exciting profession; it is multi-faceted and continually evolving. This programme is designed for engineers who wish to advance their skills and knowledge to a level appropriate for a professional engineer at the cutting-edge of their profession.
The programme focuses on techniques specific to mechanical engineering. It shares five modules with the MSc Mechanical Engineering programme, and teaches skills in subjects including intelligent control, renewable energy and many other technical areas.
You will receive technical modules that aim to increase your understanding of a diverse range of evolving engineering fields. You will be trained in many areas of project management, and will develop management and leadership skills whilst gaining experience of working in a team environment. The programme includes an industry-led group project and culminates with a substantial individual project which will enable you to become familiar with applying the skills you have learnt in a real environment.
A range of practical lessons will increase your understanding of a diverse range of industries, giving you the confidence to apply the skills you have learned in a professional environment. Module topics focus on case studies, workshops, projects with local industry and a substantial summer project.
