This programme is suitable for engineering and science graduates and also engineering professionals who wish to:

* enhance their expertise in engineering thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer;

* develop their competence the use of analytical and also state-of-the-art computational and experimental methods in the analysis of heat and fluid flow systems for both industrial and research applications.

The Programme Objective is to produce postgraduate specialists with:

* advanced understanding of heat and fluid flow processes and their role in modern methods of power generation;

* in-depth understanding of numerical and experimental techniques in heat and fluid flow.

This programme enables graduates to acquire training in the theory and practice of a broad range of industrially relevant topics within the fields of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. It is designed specifically to meet the needs of the modern engineer both in industry and in research or education establishments.

Special emphasis is placed on laboratory work both for gaining insight through experimentally observed phenomena and also to provide practical experience of a wide range of measurement and data analysis techniques. The programme has a strong practical orientation and, using a range of supporting facilities , aims to produce engineers with the theoretical and practical experience to enable them to analyse and investigate problems, and to engage in design, development and testing in areas involving: internal combustion engines and turbine, fluid flows and heat transfer.

The academics that support the TPFE course, either through teaching, or through supervision of Dissertation Projects , carry out research in wide range of Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer topics.

Module details

The taught part of the programme consists of four single and three double course units. The single course units are studied in the first ten-week block of lectures and provide essential groundwork for the double course units, which are taught in the second eight-week block of lectures. All course units are compulsory and typically include: Fluid Mechanics; Heat Transfer; Computational Fluid Dynamics; Thermodynamics; Experimental Methods; Internal Combustion Engines and Gas Turbines.

- Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer & Fluid Flow [70% exam, 10 credits]
The aim of this module is to provide students from related engineering backgrounds with an understanding of the fundamentals of heat transfer, fluid flow and thermodynamics for application to buildings and their engineering systems.

- Thermal Comfort & Indoor Air Quality [70% exam, 15 credits]
The aim of this module is for the student to understand the principles and practice involved in the design of indoor environments, with respect to occupant thermal comfort and air quality.

- Building Thermal Loads & Systems [70% exam, 15 credits]
The aim of this module is for the student to understand the principles of building thermal load analysis and required systems for medium to large buildings.

- Building Energy Supply Systems [70% exam, 15 credits]
The aim of this module is for the student to be provided with a practical foundation in system design and analysis, by developing the students' understanding of thermal plant in buildings including air conditioning systems and systems for heat recovery.

- Building Control & Commissioning [70% exam, 10 credits]
The aims of this module are for the student to understand the application of automatic control in energy monitoring and commissioning and to examine the control problems in buildings and develop control strategies that will improve thermal comfort and building energy use.

- Concept Design [0% exam, 15 credits]
The aims of this module are for the student to be introduced to the process within which buildings are conceived and designed by undertaking the architecture design of a major building using multi-disciplinary input. Students will develop team skills through working in design groups to generate schematic concepts before developing the best. They will apply previous knowledge of building services and low carbon design in the selection process and carry out performance analysis. Students will work with 3D architectural and 3D mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems within BIM software to further develop their concepts.

- Low Carbon Building Design [50% exam, 15 credits]
The module aims to introduce the principles of low and zero carbon building with special attention to the process of design and decision-making.

- Advanced Thermal Modelling [50% exam, 15 credits]
The aims of this module are for the student to understand the principles of building thermal modelling and HVAC plant simulation, and be given a perspective on the applications of these techniques to the design process.

- Research Project [0% exam, 60 credits]
The aim of this module is to provide the student with experience of the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to Building Energy

- Research Methods in Building Performance [0% exam, 10 credits]
The aims of this module are for the student to become familiar with and comprehend the wide range of research methods and skills needed to investigate, understand and communicate building performance.

Facilities

All masters students have access to a wide range of building simulation codes which include commercial software, as well as bespoke codes developed in-house. Students can run these codes on their personal laptops or access any one of our computer laboratories, including access to our recently commissioned 2000-node high performance computer cluster.

One of our key strengths at Loughborough is our experimental facilities which enable us to validate computer models. Our masters students have access to a vast range of experimental facilities, some of which are used during the taught modules and all of which are available for use by students during their research dissertations.

These include: a fully controllable environmental chamber; sophisticated thermal and breathing manikins; an indoor solar simulator; a 'darkroom' facility to carry out optical and high dynamic range measurements; and full-scale houses for pressure testing and studying innovative heating and control strategies. A recent investment of £360k was made to purchase an extensive array of monitoring and measuring equipment for use during field studies.

How you will learn

You will learn through a carefully balanced combination of lectures, in-class guided workshops, hands-on computer modelling, field measurements and independent research. Students have access to a wide range of air flow and thermal modelling software as wells as extensive laboratory facilities. Following nine taught modules, students pursue a research dissertation of their choice which draws on the skills developed during the taught modules.

Students are assessed by a combination of traditional written exams, coursework and assignments. This split is typically 70/30 (exam/coursework) or 50/50, although some modules, such as research methods and concept design are assessed entirely based on coursework which comprises individual presentations and group work.

Careers and further study

Previous students have gone on to work for leading consulting engineering companies such as Arup, Pick Everad, Hoare Lea, Cundall, Foster & Partners, and Atkins. Some of these companies offer work placements for students to undertake their research dissertations. Many visit the university to deliver lectures to our MSc students providing ideal opportunities for students to discuss employment opportunities.

Scholarships

The University offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a county outside the European Union. These Scholarships are to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) is one of the leading MAE departments in Asia. The aim of the MAE Department is to produce high quality MAE graduates with competitive academic training, technology leadership, and/or entrepreneurship.

The Department has 26 full-time faculty members. Many of them are internationally renowned scholars in their fields. There are about 150 research postgraduate students. The MAE Department is also equipped with many state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. Solid Mechanics and Dynamics
These are two of the fundamental pillars of Mechanics research. The Department has a diverse faculty with expertise in these fields. Research activities range from applied to theoretical problems, and have a marked multidisciplinary nature. They involve: applied mathematics, solid mechanics, nonlinear dynamics, computations, solid state physics, material science and experiments for various kinds of solid materials/systems and mechanical behaviors. Faculty members work on problems of both static and dynamic natures with different types of evolutions. These problems also involve multi-field coupling on different scales of time and length, from micro-second to long time creep processes and from a very small carbon nanotube or a cell to macroscopic scale composite materials and electro-mechanical devices/systems.

Materials Technology
Materials engineering focuses on characterizing and processing new materials, developing processes for controlling their properties and their economical production, generating engineering data necessary for design, and predicting the performance of products. Research topics include: smart materials, biomaterials, thin films, composites, fracture and fatigue, residual life assessment, materials issues in electronic packaging, materials recycling, plastics flow in injection molding, advanced powder processing, desktop manufacturing, and instrumentation and measurement techniques.

Energy/Thermal Fluid and Environment Engineering
Research in energy, thermal/fluids and environmental engineering includes fuel cells and batteries, advanced renewable energy storage systems, thermoelectric materials and devices, nanoscale heat and mass transfer, transport in multicomponent and multiphase systems, innovative electronics cooling systems, energy efficient buildings, and contaminant transport in indoor environments.

Design and Manufacturing Automation
These elements lie at the heart of mechanical engineering in which engineers conceive, design, build, and test innovative solutions to "real world" problems. Research is being conducted in the areas of geometric modeling, intelligent design and manufacturing process optimization, in-process monitoring and control of manufacturing processes, servosystem control, robotics, mechatronics, prime-mover system control, sensor technology and measurement techniques, and bio-medical systems design and manufacturing.

Microsystems and Precision Engineering
Micro ElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) is a multidisciplinary research field which has been making a great impact on our daily life, including various micro sensors used in personal electronics, transportation, communication, and biomedical diagnostics. Fundamental and applied research work is being conducted in this area. Basic micro/nanomechanics, such as fluid and solid mechanics, heat transfer and materials problems unique to micro/nanomechanical systems are studied. New ideas to produce microsystems for energy, biomedicine and nanomaterials, micro sensors and micro actuators are explored. Technology issues related to the micro/nanofabrication of these devices are being addressed.

Aerospace Engineering
Aerospace engineering is a major branch of engineering concerned with research, development, manufacture and operation of aircraft and spacecraft. Within the aerospace engineering group, fundamental and applied research is being conducted in areas such as aerodynamics, aeroacoustics, aircraft and engine noise and performance, combustion dynamics, thermoacoustics, atomization and sprays, and aircraft design and optimization. Advanced experimental facilities and high-fidelity computational methods are being developed and used. The group boasts two world-class anechoic wind tunnels for aerodynamics and aeroacoustics research, and is home to a major research center on aircraft noise technology.

The programme consists of five core modules including essential advanced level aspects of solid and fluid mechanics, precision engineering, modelling and simulation.

You can tailor the course to your interests through your individual project and by choosing three optional modules drawing in subjects such as biomechanics, heat transfer, renewable energy, energy storage technologies, mathematical and computational modelling, or further advanced fluid dynamics. The five core modules of the course focus on essential advanced level aspects of solid and fluid mechanics, precision engineering, modelling and simulation. These topics develop skills in understanding and modelling a range of complex systems, developing the theories of interaction and representing these with mathematical formulae. Solution of these models is covered through analytical solution, writing computer code and using proprietary (industry standard) software. These skills are useful in all areas of mechanical engineering and are associated with the application of computers in engineering practice.

Three optional modules allow a focused study of topics directed towards the students’ own interests and provide students with a knowledge and understanding of the ‘state-of-the-art’ in one or more of the many areas of mechanical engineering in which the School has acknowledged expertise. The optional modules are run in subject areas for which Warwick has a very strong research background and are led by academics who are experts in the field.

Projects can be chosen in any available subject area. The project allows students to specialise further in their chosen field of interest, gaining substantial expertise in one particular area. WHAT DOES THE MASTER IN ENERGY ENGINEERING OFFER TO ITS STUDENTS

In the last years both industrialization and population growth have brought to a higher demand for sustainable energy, smart energy management with reduced environmental impact. As a result the MSc Energy Engineering was born out of the need to better cope with Sustainable Development issues and progress in energy conversion technologies, in including renewable energy generation and energy storage, NZE buildings, with an increasing attention devoted to greenhouse gas emissions reduction through a multidisciplinary approach.

The University of Genoa and Siemens jointly developed a smart polygeneration microgrid in Savona Campus – officially commissioned on February 2014.

Since then the campus has largely generated enough power to satisfy its own needs with the help of several networked energy producers, i.e. total capacity 250Kw of electricity and 300kW of heating.

The grid includes microgasturbines, absorption chillers, a photovoltaic plant, a solar power station and electrochemical and thermal storage systems.

As enabling technologies become more easily accessible, engineers are faced with increasing demands for designing and producing more complex mechanical devices to serve the needs of the society. Next generation engineering products will be ‘smart’ with many functionalities; they will be made of new materials; they will increase energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact; they will vary in size from nano to mega scales; and they will be more closely integrated with information processing systems. Also as mechanical systems are becoming increasingly complex to analyze and expensive to experiment, more emphasis will have to be placed on computer aided analysis, design, verification and manufacturing. Teaching And Assessment

The initial semesters of this course focus on taught subjects that cover topics such as computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer, multidisciplinary design and engineering optimisation, composite materials and lightweight structures, advanced stress and analysis and thermo-mechanical energy conversion systems.

Teaching is primarily delivered by lectures, seminars and workshops, all of which are assessed by methods such as assignments, exams and technical reports. All of this course’s assessments have been devised to closely mirror the outputs required in a real working environment.

On completion of the taught modules you will undertake a substantial piece of research related to an area of mechanical engineering that particularly interests you. Our teaching team will be on-hand to offer support and guidance throughout every stage of your course.

The UK continues to lead the world in power and propulsion technology. In addition to its established aerospace role, the gas turbine is finding increasing application in power generation, oil and gas pumping, chemical processing and power plants for ships and other large vehicles.

Course overview

The course consists of approximately ten to fifteen taught modules and an individual research project.

In addition to management, communication, team work and research skills, each student will attain at least the following outcomes from this degree course:

The MSc in New and Renewable Energy is designed to equip our graduates with the skills required to meet the growing challenge to achieve energy and environmental sustainability through the application of new and renewable energy technologies. The programme aims to enable students to develop the capacity to solve problems across the traditional Engineering boundaries and to have an appreciation of complete energy systems from source to end user, to have knowledge of the relevant technologies and to understand the interactions between them. The programme also provides students with the opportunity to develop skills in research, development, design and project management through individual and team-based project work.

Course Structure

The programme consists of four core modules to provide a solid foundation in a broad range of New and Renewable Energy technologies and three optional modules that allow students to choose more specialised study programmes that are most suited to their interests. Learning and Teaching

This is a 12-month full time degree course that starts in September with an intensive core module on engineering fundamentals and finishes at the end of August the following year, when students submit a report and have an oral examination on their chosen research project. The programme consists of four core modules to provide a solid foundation in a broad range of New and Renewable Energy technologies and three optional modules that allow students to choose study programmes which are most suited to their interests. The modules include lecture courses, a group design project and an individual research and development project.

The course starts in September the first of the core modules (Renewable Energy Fundamentals), which prepares students from different backgrounds to take full advantage of all aspects of the courses. This module consists of an intensive study programme which typically combines over 30 hours of lectures with 12 hours of tutorials and labs. Topics studied include thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, power system plant, electrical circuits and power electronics and converters. The module also introduces students to best practice research techniques.

The second core module (Renewable Energy & the Environment) typically involves 19 hours of lectures and tutorials. Assessment is through a combination of examination and a coursework.

The third core module is a group design project focused on a realistic application of renewable energy. Students gain experience of teamwork and project management, as well as the technical aspects of engineering design.

A major individual research and development project completes the core modules. This provides an open-ended challenge to each individual student, in collaboration with a staff supervisor. Regular meetings are held with the supervisor to discuss project progress and planning issues. A mid-term assessment is carried out to ensure project is on track. At the end of the project students are required to submit a final report on their work, in the style of a research paper. They are also required to prepare and to present a poster to allow an assessment to be made of their understanding and ability to present their work, plus an oral examination is held to allow detailed questions to be put to the student regarding the technical aspects of their project. Students should expect to have up to 20 hours of contact time with their supervisors plus 500 hours of research work, supported by the School’s technicians and other research workers, over the course of their research projects.

Each of the optional modules involves typically 19 hours of lectures in addition to tutorials, laboratory work and assignments.

Lectures, design tutorials, computational tutorials, lab work and industrial seminars.

All courses use lectures by academic staff and industrial partners, laboratory work, site visits, design projects and dissertation. Assessment is by formal examinations, coursework assignments and a dissertation with oral examination.

September–June: taught modules and preparation for your dissertation.
June–August: complete your dissertation.

Your research dissertation gives you the opportunity to work with an academic on a piece of research in a subdiscipline. We’ll give you training in research skills.

Mechanical engineers design and develop everything you think of as a machine - from supersonic fighter jets to bicycles and toasters. Mechanical engineers may work in a number of different industries including automotive, aerospace, chemical, computer, communication, paper, and power generation.

The Master of Professional Engineering (Mechanical) is a 3 year full-time course delivering technical and professional outcomes that will allow you to be recognised as an Australian graduate engineer in this field. This degree has been given full accreditation at the level of Professional Engineering by the industry governing body, Engineers Australia http://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/

If your bachelor's degree included foundational engineering units, you may be given advanced standing and be eligible to enrol either in a reduced length graduate certificate or directly into the Master of Professional Engineering. Entry pathways are available for students with widely varying backgrounds.

In this course you will engage in areas of study including system dynamics and control, thermal engineering, fluid dynamics, and mechanics of solids. You will also have the opportunity to complete either an engineering project or research at the end of the course.

This course is designed to give participants a thorough training in the theory and practice of modern analytical techniques, with special regard to solving problems such as arise in various areas of Irish industry. Towards these ends the course will consist of (i) lectures, (ii) laboratory work on set experiments and (iii) a short analytical research/development project.

Course Details

Among the topics covered in lectures are: Introduction, sampling, classical methods of analysis, instrumentation in spectroscopy, atomic and molecular spectroscopy, near infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, separation methods (incl. gas-liquid and high-performance liquid chromatography, supercritical fluid extraction), ion exchangers, potentiometry, voltammetry, sensors, process analysis, thermal methods, materials analysis, statistical data handling and the use of computers in analytical chemistry.

Format

Lectures, chosen from the following topic areas, are provided in a dedicated lecture schedule and through attendance at appropriate modules.

Set experiments

Set experiments are selected from the topics listed above and will involve the whole analytical process from sampling to the assessment of results and reliability parameters.

Project

A short research/development project is completed during the summer by full-time candidates (for part-time students special arrangements will be made).

Placement and study abroad

Opportunities exist for industrial placement both locally and through IAESTE and for exchange of staff and students with other European research laboratories through various EU-supported Socrates networks, linked to University College Cork.
