The industry -

The UK’s economic recovery is maintaining a strong pace, with many businesses feeling comfortable enough to focus on growth for the first time since the survival-oriented recession years. Studying a postgraduate degree in marketing positions students perfectly to help drive that growth, delivering quality marketing research and then making decisions accordingly.

The programme -

Core units look at the significance of communication; the development of existing and emerging marketing strategies; new marketing technologies; globalisation; and relationship marketing. Students also learn how best to apply academic theory to real-life marketing scenarios, eventually researching and writing their own 12,000 word dissertation. This is an ideal opportunity to explore an area of marketing that is related to their own unique career ambitions.

Professional qualifications are offered alongside the core postgraduate curriculum. These include Chartered Institute of Marketing, CAM Foundation, PRINCE2 and Google Analytics awards. Professional qualifications of this kind are valued by many employers, giving students an advantage when it comes time to look for work.

Marketing management students also benefit from our strong links with industry, gaining access to a range of exciting guest lectures, live briefs and industry assessments. The Marketing Consultancy Project unit sees students working on marketing projects with either a commercial or not-for-profit business. Past students have completed work for Symantec, Southampton City Council, the Leprosy Mission, the Nuffield Theatre, Cunard, Microsoft, Bath Travel, Morgan Motor Company, Rotary International and Arlington Fleet Services.

The course team can help students to secure additional work placement opportunities throughout the course. Students also have the chance to develop freelance experience by pitching for work at Solent Creatives, our in-house creative agency.

Teaching, learning and assessment -

The course is classroom-based and involves group and individual study. It includes field trips to Morgan Motor Cars in Coventry and local marketing communications agencies.

Work experience -

Several units provide opportunities to work on live projects. For the Marketing Consultancy Project, for example, past students have completed research for Symantec, Southampton City Council, the Leprosy Mission, the Nuffield Theatre, Cunard and Microsoft.

Placements are available during the summer vacation, giving you the chance to work closely with a UK business and, by agreement, undertake research for your dissertation.

Assessment -

Assessment is through individual and group work. There are no examinations.

Graduation costs -

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2015, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £42 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

This programme is designed to be extremely flexible, reflecting the diversity of approaches to making artwork. It can be studied full-time or part-time.

Students are expected to develop two parallel projects: a work-in-progress piece informed by an extensive critical agenda and a major performance event. These projects are underpinned by extensive (written) critical study and the development of a ‘professional (business) portfolio’ that helps define the nature and purpose of the creative projects in an external context.

“Groups" and “Individuals"

A key feature of the programme is the ‘Theatre Collective’ strand: we welcome block-applications from groups of artists, who are keen to develop their creative identity as part of a shared collective. Individuals are, of course, welcome, either as solo performers or as individuals looking to share practice in new contexts.

Chichester: working environment

Students will be entering into one of the most vibrant and connected environments and communities for making contemporary theatre and performance. The Department of Theatre at Chichester has an established reputation for working with a wide range of established performance artists who recognise the opportunities of creative research and development within an applied university context.

Much of the work developed by students Department is presented in our ShowRoom Theatre, a key venue in the national touring network, with a reputation for programming innovative and radical work, but we also have firm links with venues and festivals in Brighton, London, Bristol and Edinburgh.

Our facilities

During the last two years we have considerable refurbishments to both our Chichester and Bognor Regis campuses.

These renovations include a purpose-built Assembly Theatre, used by Theatre students for rehearsals and performance.

We also have a number of soundproofed practice rooms for rehearsals and lessons, as well as lecture and seminar rooms. Our Chapel is also a fantastic venue for performances and rehearsals, and is the centre piece of the campus.

There are also several dance studios, a fully-equipped 250-seat theatre, and a 110-seat studio theatre.

Our new award-winning Learning Resource Centre is at the heart of the campus, and we offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research.

A range of study areas for group and quiet study including Wi-Fi areas for laptop use are available, or you can use our open access PC and Mac areas. 

Also situated in our LRC is Costa Coffee and nearly 100 open-access work stations.

An equipment loans centre offers laptops, tablets and other electronic devices for short and long term loans.

Where this can take you

You will be encouraged to think about your own future within theatre along with the help of our academic lecturers, many of who are professional artists with links to hundreds of theatres across the UK.

Your own new work will be stimulated by a continuous programme of professional performances from a wide range of international artists, many of whom support the work of the department through teaching and mentoring.

Work placements

Every year we offer students the chance to work with the technical, marketing, or outreach departments of our local theatres in art centres and other venues, theatre companies, independent producers, schools/colleges and various other related contexts. These programmes are designed to help get your foot on the ladder on graduating within an established organisation or professional context.

Students are also encouraged to work further afield – across the UK, Europe, or the USA – with the Department’s Cultural Exchange programme. Intensive weekend residencies and summer schools will be arranged in accordance students’ needs: the programme is designed to work around the calendars of working artists.

Indicative modules

This programme constitutes 180 Credits and is broken into five compulsory modules:

  • Developmental Project (Practice led Research and Development, including a written dissertation, 60 credits)
  • Production (Practical Project, 60 credits)
  • Professional Portfolio (Professional development and representation, 30 credits)
  • Research Methodology (Critical Studies, 15 credits)
  • Cultural Identity and Performance (Critical/Practical Research Project, 15 credits)

Production and Developmental Project serve as the year-long core creative projects, supported by external and professional reflection through Professional Portfolio.

These projects are delivered in a rigorous, yet highly flexible, context, with regular masterclasses by professional practitioners, supported by tutorials and seminars with tutors and mentors.

Our programme is run by a team of highly dedicated academics and artists, who also teach on the highly successful BA Theatre Programme and on the Performing Arts MPhil/PhD programme.

You have the choice of applying for an 8 month paid work placement in a marketing role instead of completing a dissertation or client project. By gaining this professional experience you will be well prepared for your future career. 

Your individual employment prospects will be enhanced through knowledge of marketing and digital marketing theory and practice. In addition, you will have the opportunity to sit the Institute for Direct and Digital Marketing (IDM) Certificate level exam. The current fast-changing media and technology environment presents many challenges to marketers. You will develop the skills to analyse complex marketing situations in the digital environment, and reach decisions on solutions and actions. The MSc International Events Marketing welcomes students new to marketing and events and those with some events and marketing experience who wish to specialise or broaden their expertise. Working closely with our Research Centre for International Tourism and Events Management, you will explore recent research and the challenges within the sector to help develop your potential to become a leader within the events sector.

You will gain a strong foundation in marketing theory and practice and its relevance and application within an events context. With live case-studies, simulations and skills workshops we encourage an innovative and creative approach to your learning. 

We place emphasis on theory and practice and the development of core employability skills. You have the choice to apply for an 8 month paid work placement in a marketing role instead of completing either a dissertation or client project.

You will gain a wealth of knowledge in events marketing including:

  • the core principles of events marketing
  • contemporary issues, challenges and research in the events sector
  • customer behaviours and expectations, and the variety of channels used to interact with customers, thereby developing a customer-centric stance 
  • analysing marketing data
  • devising marketing strategy for global brands and organisations
  • developing the decision-making skills and rationale to devise marketing plans and communications.

Approach to assessment

Assessment methods have been designed to support the teaching and learning process, and where possible provide a vehicle for learning rather than an assessment of learning. For example, participation within the design, planning, delivery and post-event evaluation of a real event provide opportunities to learn and apply theory and event management tools. The Dissertation and Client Project are self-managed activities organised by students, and supported by a tutor in the role of Supervisor who will provide regular feedback on progress. For the Work Placement Project module, a Supervisor will similarly be allocated and provide a central point of academic support for you during the length of the project. The placement project itself is secured by you and organised jointly between the Faculty of Business and the supporting organisation. Initial information and guidance will be provided during Professional and Academic Development for Marketers and Event Managers.

Within the remaining modules you are assessed in a number of ways, including individual and group reports and presentations, portfolios, reflective statements, and open briefs that encourage individual creativity. While you are encouraged to work in teams to enhance your own and collective learning, group work is only summatively assessed in two compulsory modules.

Musical Theatre at Winchester focuses on the academic study of musical theatre, preparing you for a career in teaching, lecturing, research, reviewing, writing or direction. It is also suitable if you are a professional interested in honing your analytical and critical skills, out of a passion for the subject or in order to change career direction. The programme provides you with a firm grounding in the critical theories and dramaturgical structures of musical theatre that are necessary for analysing, critiquing, directing and composing musical theatre texts. You are encouraged to engage with academic literature, case studies and each other by reflecting on your own experiences.

The suite of Masters programmes in the Department of Performing Arts draws together students on courses in Theatre Studies, Musical Theatre and Dance. You work together on modules in Critical Theories and Dramaturgies (Analysis and Composition) and in the optional intensive practical module, benefiting from interdisciplinary interactions, debates and discussions. Over the duration of the course, you develop skills in independent and critical learning, building your confidence and expertise progressively through independent and collaborative research, problem solving, and analysis with the support of staff.

Optional modules include Theatre Stories, Cultural Entrepreneurship, Performance Now, and British Theatre 1945–2015. The programme can be taken entirely by distance/blended learning, but Intensive Practice, Extending the Voice, and Physical Skills 3 are only available on campus and may be subject to audition.

The course prepares you for a range of careers, including research, teaching in schools or at further and higher education levels, the entertainment industry, the performance sector and production-related work, and outreach and facilitatory roles in community and social care settings.

It will help you to sharpen your practical skills as a creative artist. On a practical level, it will assist you in working as a freelance writer, composer or producer of musical theatre.

The MA focuses on the dramaturgy of the musical as a key factor in the future development of the genre.

Expert professionals are regularly employed as visiting tutors, to maintain direct links with the industry.

You follow one of the two pathways as either:

  • writer or composer

You undertake an analytic case study of a musical or production, a placement project and dissertation (producers), and a creative project involving either book and lyrics or music for a short original musical (writers and composers). Producers share some classes with students on the MA in Arts Administration and Cultural Policy.

You elect to follow one of two pathways on the programme – Producers, or Writers and Composers. In each case, the programme involves five separate modules:

1. Genre study – autumn and spring terms, both pathways.

This module runs for 20 weeks. It begins in autumn with an historical survey of the development of the American musical, from ‘Showboat’ (1927) to ‘Sweeney Todd’ (1979). It continues in the spring term with a look at new forms of musical theatre that have resulted from the fragmentation of the classic tradition of ‘book’ musicals, with the innovation of the ‘concept’ musical, the impact of rock musicals, the ‘invasion’ of Broadway by the British ‘megamusical’ and the subsequent globalisation of the market by Cameron Macintosh and Disney.

2. Case study – autumn and spring terms, both pathways. 

This module involves a 15-week introduction to the different structural components (book, music, lyrics, choreography, scenography) and industrial factors (producers, marketing, technology, conomics) 

determining the production of musicals today. The module is taught by a range of professional and academic experts with a variety of different perspectives on the subject.

3. Shared complementary/contextual module 1 – autumn term.

Students choose one of these modules:

Assessment 

Genre study is assessed by two 3,000-word essays; the case study is assessed by means of a 4,000-word essay. The nature and form of creative projects, dissertations and research/placement projects are agreed with the Module Convenor during the programme.

Skills

You will develop a critical understanding of the collaborative processes involved in the creation of musical theatre in the UK and USA.

Composers and librettists/lyricists will achieve an enhanced ability to engage with the integration of dramaturgical and musical components of musical theatre writing, and a comprehension of the various factors involved in working within the industry.

Producers will acquire an overall perspective on the industrial and organisational factors involved in musical theatre production, including methods of theatre marketing, systems of arts funding and policy, and a working knowledge of the strategies involved in producing a small-scale musical.

Producers will also develop skills of leadership and teamwork and the ability to develop and critique their own approaches to working in musical theatre production.

Explore the potential of performance design with this wide-ranging programme.

You’ll develop an awareness of the performance events and experiences that can be created with the aid of lighting, projection, settings and objects, puppetry, props, costume, sound as well as newer technologies such as digital and pervasive media. You’ll have space to experiment and come up with innovative and creative ideas for performance, while learning more about the theories and concepts that are shaping emergent forms of theatre, art and performance practice.

As you build up your MA portfolio you’ll engage with contemporary performance and arts practices – including immersive and participatory forms of performance, as well as those outside of the theatre – while considering the role they play in their wider social, cultural and economic landscape. This is the only research-orientated programme in the UK tailored towards academic and practical engagement with performance design.

You’ll be based in our purpose-built landmark building [email protected], with two professional-standard and publicly licensed theatres that regularly host works by students and visiting theatre companies. One of these is a technically advanced research facility, and both are fully equipped with the latest technology. A dance studio, dressing rooms and box office are also in the building, and our School includes rehearsal rooms, two black-box studios, costume construction and wardrobe stores, a design studio and scenic workshop, video editing and sound recording suits as well as computer aided design.

But our biggest strength is our links with external organisations, which give you the chance to get outside the theatre and explore performance in different environments. Our partners include Opera North, West Yorkshire Playhouse, the National Media Museum, Leeds City Council, Red Ladder Theatre Company, Limehouse Productions, Phoenix Dance Theatre, the National Coal Mining Museum for England, HMP New Hall, Blah BlahBlah Theatre Company, the BBC and HMP Wetherby.

Course content

Throughout the programme, you’ll develop an awareness of research methods and approaches in performance and the cultural industries. In Semester One, you’ll also take a core module which introduces you to key concepts, theories and ideas in performance design, exploring ideas such as visuality and the theatre, spectacle, audience experience and multi-sensorial performance.

This foundation will inform the rest of your studies, including your practice. In Semester One you’ll also work with a range of scenographic materials to develop your own creative practice, spending time in practical workshops alongside lectures where you’ll consider current issues and debates in performance design and the role of practice-led research.

In Semester Two you’ll apply all the knowledge and skills you’ve gained to an independent research project, which could be practice-led or a written dissertation on a topic of your choice. You’ll also be able to spend more time on your practice – you’ll have the chance to complete an individual project, or to collaborate with fellow students from across the School, or work on another small-scale research project based on a two-week placement in an external organisation. Alternatively you could choose from optional modules on topics such as audience engagement or debates on culture and place.

If you choose to study part-time, you’ll study over a longer period and take fewer modules in each year.

Learning and teaching

We use different teaching and learning methods to help you develop your skills and make the most of our tutors’ expertise, including, practicals, seminars, tutorials, lectures and group learning. Independent study is also integral to the programme, since it helps you to form your own ideas and build skills in research and analysis.

Assessment

The assessment methods you experience will vary depending on the module. However, to allow you to develop skills in a range of areas they will include essays, performances, visual documentation, verbal presentations, critical evaluations and reports.

Career opportunities

This programme will give you the knowledge and skills to become an articulate and creative performance design practitioner. This could include; working as a designer or director in theatre, live performance, festivals or the events industry (either within a company or freelance), creating your own performance events or performance company, or working in community arts.

You’ll also gain a range of transferable skills in research, analysis, interpretation and communication, as well as imagination, independence and cultural awareness. This will equip you to work for a variety of roles across the cultural and creative industries, for example, in administration, marketing and management.

Because of the emphasis on research, it’s also good preparation for PhD-level study and teaching.

This MA in Creative Producing is the first programme ever offered in Theatre producing in a UK university. Created in 2002 as Producing, Promoting & Managing Theatre it then changed into the shorter present title in 2006. It has built strong links and recognition within the industry and many companies actively seek to work with our students and graduates.

This is a degree that is heavily embedded into the Theatre making industry and is useful for those wanting to develop careers as producers, directors, venue managers, writers, agents, company and production management, marketing, event management, casting agents, among many others. It is based in Theatre, but is also relevant in many other areas such as Film and TV, as well as general business and commerce. The content is focused on the professional skills of the producer, giving a broad but in depth understanding of the commercial, creative and contemporary issues needed to succeed in the business we call Showbusiness.

As a participant you will experience an intense taught period over the first term where you will learn the business and personal skills needed to develop, negotiate and create business and artistic plans, through a mix of workshops, seminars and lectures. You are stimulated to develop further your own individual creative approaches to Theatre, exploring ideas and critical awareness. We do this through looking at the current state of play within the world of Theatre; we invite key people to give talks and workshops, starting you on the road to building effective future networks. This is assessed through a mix of presentations, written case studies, and group research projects.

In term 2 you then work more independently on the application of your skills you can choose to have a work placement or in depth company analysis, this is assessed by regular blogs and a reflective or analytical written report. You then develop your own creative idea as a business plan, assessed through a full written submission and a presentation pitch to a panel of experts. Instead of the Business Plan you can choose an optional module from the School of Arts that you can demonstrate will support the focus of your studies and dissertation. Over the summer you will then work on your agreed dissertation.

Postgraduate Drama and Theatre studies at Kent has a very strong reputation for research and supervision in contemporary theatre and performance. Drawing on close working relationships with a host of partner organisations, including Museums Sheffield and the Cultural Industries Quarter Agency, this course combines a thorough grounding in cultural policy and theory with practical management skills.

With the creative economy continuing to out-perform other sectors in the UK and overseas, this course is ideal if you are
