Teaching, learning and assessment -

The course is classroom-based and involves group and individual study. It includes field trips to Morgan Motor Cars in Coventry and local marketing communications agencies.

Work experience -

Several units provide opportunities to work on live projects. For the Marketing Consultancy Project, for example, past students have completed research for Symantec, Southampton City Council, the Leprosy Mission, the Nuffield Theatre, Cunard and Microsoft.

Placements are available during the summer vacation, giving you the chance to work closely with a UK business and, by agreement, undertake research for your dissertation.

Assessment -

Assessment is through individual and group work. There are no examinations.

Our Performance programme has 2 pathways, “Theatre” and "Theatre Collectives”, and is designed especially for both emerging and established theatre and performance artists or groups. A part ‘taught’, part ‘research’ model, the programme is centred on core modules in postgraduate research methodologies, around which you create a new piece of work, an artists portfolio, business plan, and a practice-led-research project, as well as opportunities to establish a professional artistic identity and platform your own work in National and International markets, and develop prospects for continuing higher education, both in terms of teaching and in terms of continuing study.

Course Content:
This programme is designed to be extremely flexible, reflecting the diversity of approaches to making artwork. It can be studied full-time or part-time. Students are expected to develop two parallel projects: a work-in-progress piece informed by an extensive critical agenda and a major performance event. These projects are underpinned by extensive (written) critical study and the development of a ‘professional (business) portfolio’ that helps define the nature and purpose of the creative projects in an external context.

“Groups" and “Individuals"
A key feature of the programme is the ‘Theatre Collective’ strand: we welcome block-applications from groups of artists, who are keen to develop their creative identity as part of a shared collective. Individuals are, of course, welcome, either as solo performers or as individuals looking to share practice in new contexts.

Chichester: Working Environment
Students will be entering into one of the most vibrant and connected environments and communities for making contemporary theatre and performance. The Department of Theatre at Chichester has an established reputation for working with a wide range of established performance artists who recognise the opportunities of creative research and development within an applied university context. Much of the work developed by students Department is presented in our ShowRoom Theatre, a key venue in the national touring network, with a reputation for programming innovative and radical work, but we also have firm links with venues and festivals in Brighton, London, Bristol and Edinburgh.

Our Facilities
During the last two years we have considerable refurbishments to both our Chichester and Bognor Regis campuses. These renovations include a purpose-built Assembly Theatre, used by Theatre students for rehearsals and performance. We also have a number of soundproofed practice rooms for rehearsals and lessons, as well as lecture and seminar rooms. Our Chapel is also a fantastic venue for performances and rehearsals, and is the centre piece of the campus. There are also several dance studios, a fully-equipped 250-seat theatre, and a 110-seat studio theatre.

Our new award-winning Learning Resource Centre is at the heart of the campus, and we offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research. A range of study areas for group and quiet study including Wi-Fi areas for laptop use are available, or you can use our open access PC and Mac areas. Also situated in our LRC is Costa Coffee and nearly 100 open-access work stations. An equipment loans centre offers laptops, tablets and other electronic devices for short and long term loans.

where this course can take you
You will be encouraged to think about your own future within theatre along with the help of our academic lecturers, many of who are professional artists with links to hundreds of theatres across the UK. Your own new work will be stimulated by a continuous programme of professional performances from a wide range of international artists, many of whom support the work of the department through teaching and mentoring.

Work Placements
Every year we offer students the chance to work with the technical, marketing, or outreach departments of our local theatres in art centres and other venues, theatre companies, independent producers, schools/colleges and various other related contexts. These programmes are designed to help get your foot on the ladder on graduating within an established organisation or professional context.

Indicative modules:
This programme constitutes 180 Credits and is broken into five compulsory modules:

* Developmental Project (Practice led Research and Development, including a written dissertation, 60 credits)
* Production (Practical Project, 60 credits)
* Professional Portfolio (Professional development and representation, 30 credits)
* Research Methodology (Critical Studies, 15 credits)

The Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Management offers a well-rounded education through coursework from the Department of Theatre & Dance, the Manderson Graduate School of Business, and the College of Communications and Information Sciences.

In addition, students receive invaluable hands-on, practical work experience through a rotation of assistantships, including Assistant Business Manager, Box Office Manager, Patron Services Manager, Marketing Manager, Digital Marketing Manager, and Education and Outreach Manager. These assistantships enhance the students’ professional experiences in all aspects of arts administration, making them desirable to arts organizations and corporate employers.

Enrollment into this program is capped at six per year. However, assistantship awards are limited to a maximum of three per year. Admission to the program and assistantships are awarded based upon a portfolio review, interview and acceptance into The University of Alabama Graduate School. MBA/MFA Theatre Management

This three year program offers students the opportunity to earn two degrees simultaneously through the Department of Theatre & Dance and the Manderson Graduate School of Business. Students spend the first year of study primarily with the MBA program. Consistently ranked in the top 50 programs for Best Value, Manderson prides itself on small class sizes and collaborative group exercises for students to learn about trends in the business world today.

Additionally, students receive hands-on, practical work experience through rotating assistantships in the theatre management office. Students manage marketing, outreach opportunities and daily operations for the theatre and dance programs including 14 productions throughout the year.

The joint program provides students an opportunity to incorporate business skills in both corporate and nonprofit arts professions. This is an 18-month course, the majority of which is based at the London campus. The final term takes place at our Paris campus. The Theatre and Performance Pathway of the MA in Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship allows you to build on a historical and theoretical understanding of cultural and creative industries and the development of a cultural economy to create your own creative initiatives, which might be research-based, policy-based, practice-based, or a combination of any or all of these.

The MA will be taught in partnership by a number of departments within Goldsmiths and with key individuals and organisations in the creative and cultural industries sector.

Our collective approach is to integrate entrepreneurship within the development of creative practices and to take a ‘creative’ approach to the development of new businesses and the infrastructure that supports them.

Modules & Structure

The programme contains four taught modules and a further dissertation/portfolio component.

You'll have a range of choices throughout the degree enabling you to design a pathway that is most relevant to your academic, business and career ambitions.

All students take modules I and III, and you can choose between options offered in performing arts for modules II and IV.

Attendance is mandatory for all taught sections of the programme. To encourage collaborative learning we try to teach all students together wherever possible, irrespective of their particular pathway.

Module I: Theories of the Culture Industry: work, creativity and precariousness- 30 credits
Module II: Creative Practice- 30 credits
Module III: Entrepreneurial Modelling- 30 credits

Module IV: Entrepreneurial Practices and Modes of Production within one creative industry sector

You can choose from two strands for this module (i) College-Based and (ii) Internship.

(i) College-based

Delivered by the partner departments – these modules deal with creative sector issues and case studies within a specific discipline, although taking into account the cross-over with other areas – including Performing Arts (theatre and dance), Visual Arts, Music, Design, Media & Communications, Publishing and Computing. As well as studying producing companies, this would also include consideration of creative agencies relating to the above. The programme will start with the above areas but in this modular system can easily expand to include other subjects.

Computing offers Sector overview: Games and Interactive Entertainment Industries.

Design offers Sector overview consisting of: Component A – Design and Futuring, and Component B – Business and Design, or an industry placement.

Drama offers A Sector overview: Cultural Policy and Practice combined with management practice in audience development and fundraising.

Fashion offers Designing Fashion, taught by the Department of Design (subject to approval).

Media and Communications offers Either an industry placement, assessed by placement report, or an industry contextual module: Media Landscapes.

Music offers Sector overview of Music industries (a) combined with management practice in audience development and fundraising.

(ii) Internship

You will undertake an internship within an SME, Producing or Research Organisation within the cultural and creative industries. There will be initial taught/tutorial sessions on managing an internship and experiential learning and assessment would be by an analytical report on the ‘culture of management’ of the organisation. In some pathways this will be augmented by classes in specific skill areas (such as marketing) as you are likely to be working in skill-specific departments of organisations.

It is envisaged that the internship would be the equivalent of two to three days a week for three months, however each internship will be individually negotiated between you, the organisations (learning partner), and the department. Although duration and attendance pattern of each internship will vary, it will provide you with the context and experience to undertake the assessment. Please note that these module options are subject to ongoing revision. Any changes will be available at the start of the programme.

Module V: Dissertation or Project/Portfolio plus reflective analysis
The content and research imperatives of the dissertation/portfolio can be developed in tutorials with staff to address your individual needs. It could range from an entirely written document researching a particular area of the cultural and creative industries to a fully developed proposal for a new business.

Skills

You can expect to develop an independence and integrity in developing creative ideas. You will be able to apply entrepreneurial approaches to creative projects and demonstrate an understanding of different business models to establish a creative enterprise. You will also develop team-working and leadership skills, and effective business and communication skills.

Careers

The programme will enable those who have previously studied an area of creative study/practice, to start a career developing a business arising from an existing or new creative practice. This may relate directly to a 'product' or 'process' arising from you own practice or to a form of 'expertise', 'consultancy' or 'knowledge'. The programme will also equip those who wish to work within organisations that develop the infrastructure and environment for new creative businesses with the capacity to flourish in a variety of contexts.

This is a degree that is heavily embedded into the Theatre making industry and is useful for those wanting to develop careers as producers, directors, venue managers, writers, agents, company and production management, marketing, event management, casting agents, among many others. It is based in Theatre, but is also relevant in many other areas such as Film and TV, as well as general business and commerce. The content is focused on the professional skills of the producer, giving a broad but in depth understanding of the commercial, creative and contemporary issues needed to succeed in the business we call Showbusiness.

As a participant you will experience an intense taught period over the first term where you will learn the business and personal skills needed to develop, negotiate and create business and artistic plans, through a mix of workshops, seminars and lectures. You are stimulated to develop further your own individual creative approaches to Theatre, exploring ideas and critical awareness. We do this through looking at the current state of play within the world of Theatre; we invite key people to give talks and workshops, starting you on the road to building effective future networks. This is assessed through a mix of presentations, written case studies, and group research projects.

In term 2 you then work more independently on the application of your skills you can choose to have a work placement or in depth company analysis, this is assessed by regular blogs and a reflective or analytical written report. You then develop your own creative idea as a business plan, assessed through a full written submission and a presentation pitch to a panel of experts. Instead of the Business Plan you can choose an optional module from the School of Arts that you can demonstrate will support the focus of your studies and dissertation. Over the summer you will then work on your agreed dissertation.

You elect to follow one of two pathways on the programme – Producers, or Writers and Composers. In each case, the programme involves five separate modules:

1. Genre study – autumn and spring terms, both pathways.
This module runs for 20 weeks. It begins in autumn with an historical survey of the development of the American musical, from ‘Showboat’ (1927) to ‘Sweeney Todd’ (1979). It continues in the spring term with a look at new forms of musical theatre that have resulted from the fragmentation of the classic tradition of ‘book’ musicals, with the innovation of the ‘concept’ musical, the impact of rock musicals, the ‘invasion’ of Broadway by the British ‘megamusical’ and the subsequent globalisation of the market by Cameron Macintosh and Disney.

2. Case study – autumn and spring terms, both pathways.
This module involves a 15-week introduction to the different structural components (book, music, lyrics, choreography, scenography) and industrial factors (producers, marketing, technology, conomics)
determining the production of musicals today. The module is taught by a range of professional and academic experts with a variety of different perspectives on the subject.

3. Shared complementary/contextual module 1 – autumn term.

Students choose one of these modules:

Assessment

Genre study is assessed by two 3,000-word essays; the case study is assessed by means of a 4,000-word essay. The nature and form of creative projects, dissertations and research/placement projects are agreed with the Module Convenor during the programme.

Skills

You will develop a critical understanding of the collaborative processes involved in the creation of musical theatre in the UK and USA.

Composers and librettists/lyricists will achieve an enhanced ability to engage with the integration of dramaturgical and musical components of musical theatre writing, and a comprehension of the various factors involved in working within the industry.

Producers will acquire an overall perspective on the industrial and organisational factors involved in musical theatre production, including methods of theatre marketing, systems of arts funding and policy, and a working knowledge of the strategies involved in producing a small-scale musical.

Producers will also develop skills of leadership and teamwork and the ability to develop and critique their own approaches to working in musical theatre production.

On our course you gain a deep understanding of the theoretical and practical interactions between literature and film, choosing specific areas of literary and cinema studies to complement your preparation for a creative practice or theoretical dissertation project of your choice. You will forge and develop connections between audio-visual and textual media. Focusing a variety of cultural productions and diverse forms of enlightenment, and entertainment, you will encounter parallel and sometimes more densely intertwined media histories, discovering the complex ways in which media anticipate, interfere with, and draw on one other.

We also offer supervision for PhD, MPhil and MA by Dissertation in different literatures and various approaches to literature, covering most aspects of early modern and modern writing in English, plus a number of other languages.

Our University is one of only 11 AHRC-accredited Doctoral Training Centres in the UK. This means that we offer funded PhD studentships which also provide a range of research and training opportunities.

Explore and make creative connections between film analysis and film practice.

Our course has a distinctive focus on international, alternative, and documentary cinemas, while also providing a solid foundation in key elements of film history and theory, including Hollywood. This critical appraisal of such a wide range of genres gives you a solid understanding of what makes film work well, enabling you to improve your own production skills in camerawork, editing, lighting, screenwriting and production management.

You gain a strong sense of independent filmmaking practice, and learn to apply your academic knowledge of film through exploring topics including:
-The formal, social, cultural and political dimensions of films from both within and beyond Hollywood
-Fiction film production, including pre-production, camera, lighting and sound
-Classics of the documentary form , docufictions and mockumentaries
-Collective and individual filmmaking projects
-Storyboarding and editing

You also benefit from a series of masterclasses conducted by invited industry professionals which focus on the craft of filmmaking: developing your technical understanding of cinematography, directing and editing/postproduction.

These also introduce you to potential employment routes and industry career pathways, from setting up your own production company, to identifying and tapping into distribution networks, and preparing and marketing your completed films.

We are ranked Top 20 in the UK (Times Good University Guide 2015), and three-quarters of our research is rated ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (REF 2014).

Our expert staff

Our intensive modules are taught in small groups by expert academic film specialists and professional filmmakers.

The Centre for Film and Screen Media at Essex is part of a vital departmental unit that offers talented students the support and confidence to respond both critically and artistically to the study of film. This distinctive environment is possible because we are a community of award-winning film-makers, scholars, and media specialists; our staff over the years have included Oscar winners and BAFTA winners.

This course features academic staff who specialise in a wide range of production and critical areas, including producing, screenwriting, documentary, film theory, Soviet cinema, US cinema, films of the Asia and Pacific regions, modernism and the avant-garde, adaptation, and silent cinema. Production staff have extensive experience with organisations such as the BBC.

Our Department has a distinguished history of combining critical and creative work, and we have long been home to poets, novelists, translators, dramatists and actors, alongside literary critics, drama scholars, filmmakers and film theorists.

Specialist facilities

For your film production modules, you have priority use of industry-standard editing facilities, two state-of-the-art studios, and a range of cameras and other filmmaking equipment. You also gain experience using professional film production software including Avid and Final Cut; everything you will need to produce films to an expert standard.

Centennial College's Arts Management program prepares you for a career in the evolving arts and cultural industry. The Arts Management courses in the two-semester post-graduate certificate program focus on developing the knowledge and skills needed to work in the performing arts sector (theatres, dance companies, music organizations and presenting facilities), the exhibiting arts sector (galleries, museums), and many other cultural and arts-related areas such as arts and film festivals.

The offering explores the current issues and practices that allow cultural organizations to build audiences and flourish today — and in the years to come. Facilitated at the Story Arts Centre, Centennial College's School of Communications, Media and Design, the program combines business management, marketing and planning with the tools required to connect art, artists and audiences through fundraising, education and volunteerism.

The extensive experiential learning opportunities in the program connect principles with practice, actively engaging you with the arts management profession throughout your studies. You also have the opportunity to apply your learning in the industry as part of an eight-week field placement.

As an Arts Management program graduate you will have a thorough understanding of the political, economic, social, ethical, technological and managerial issues facing this sector.
