Overview

MA Fashion Marketing and Branding at Winchester School of Art is designed to balance the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to succeed in marketing roles in international based fashion and textile brands.

This MA programme will explore the specific marketing challenges and opportunities that exist within the world of fashion and its supporting textiles industries. The global nature of the Fashion industry, coupled with rapid advances in communication and digital technologies, have changed the nature of how we view the world of fashion and how consumers' tastes develop. In this context, the world of Fashion demands a focused and knowledge based approach to marketing.

You will critically analyse your ideas in relation to contemporary issues and theories of fashion and textile marketing from a local and global perspective. As such it is probably the current most important strategic development facing international fashion retailers. The programme aims to provide a highly targeted, practical programme to support this growing sector. As a business discipline, multichannel marketing management is essential for an organisation's overall strategic planning, as it is designed to maximise the revenues and profits of the firm. Emphasis is placed on linking the fundamentals of marketing to multichannel practices, considering the multiple routes by which customers and businesses interact with each other, studying the importance of multichannel retailing, marketing strategy development and integration of channels.

The Multichannel Marketing course is designed to help you develop a critical appreciation of key areas in fashion retail including:

Coursework and assessment

The first two semesters are spent following a programme of lectures and tutorials, which are continually assessed through written assignments. You take examinations in January and May and following a satisfactory assessment you commence a research project culminating in the submission of a dissertation in mid-September.

The fashion industry is a vibrant and challenging business environment. This Fashion Management with Marketing MA is designed to accommodate a range of career opportunities within this sector, providing you with an advanced understanding of the global fashion industry.

Our innovative programme is aimed at graduates with a fashion, textiles, design or business degree who wish to gain management knowledge, with the aim to become a manager within this sector. It will also provide a suitable progression route for those who have worked in the industry but want to improve their employment prospects to get to a higher level, as well as for those preparing for PhD study.

You will learn from a range of expert staff about the management practices which are specific to the fashion and textiles business, as well as the inclusion of fashion marketing and promotion techniques, and brand management theories. You will graduate with an advanced understanding of the global fashion industry.

Teaching usually consists of one hour lectures followed by one or two-hour seminars or tutorials for each module. You will also be expected to conduct a substantial amount of self-directed learning, which is important for you to contextualise your studies and to broaden your knowledge. The Fashion Management with Marketing MA is a theoretical programme and assessments are mostly by the submission of fully referenced and structured reports. Presentations are also fundamental as an opportunity for you to present your work to others either for assessment or within a scheduled class activity. One module includes the formulation of a weekly blog for you to keep abreast of topical issues. You will also be required to submit a project proposal which will act as your plan for future research, especially for the dissertation.

The fashion and textile business is highly competitive and we encourage you to develop networking opportunities by becoming a student member of trade associations and to engage in conferences and seminars delivered by industry members.
We expect you to be proactive and attend presentations provided by visitors from the fashion and textiles business to the university, as extra curricula activity. Teaching staff come from a range of art and design disciplines, contributing to their own areas of expertise. The programme of study allows you to freely develop creative design practice and valuable marketing and business skills, building comprehensive understanding, vision and direction.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

The course is developed through seminars, lectures, tutorials, visiting speakers, group critiques, market research and personal research. You will be introduced to research skills and methods, product development, design management and methods, with marketing and business skills. The emphasis of the course is learning how best to present ideas, and where and how to place them in the market.

Students develop and propose a personal route of study and explore and research an area of textiles in knit, print, weave, or embroidery for fashion or interiors, textile art, or in fashion design.

You are encouraged to trial a product in the market either through first hand experience, or through working with studios and agents for designers, shops and craft markets (for designer makers), or with galleries or public spaces (for textile artists).

MODULES

In the first trimester, you'll study Research Methodologies. This introduces generic methodologies and considers subject specific data retrieval analysis and evaluation techniques. You'll also study The Development of Product, Market Research and Product Ideas.

In the second trimester, you'll study Marketing skills. This about developing relevant professional skills and an understanding of marketing requirements for textile designers, makers and artists. You'll also study other modules such as Product Sampling and Development and Research.

The final trimester involves a practice-based Master's Project. This is about bringing ideas to a professional conclusion often in the form of an exhibition of finished wok and supporting promotional materials.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The PG Cert is assessed by studio exhibition and/or portfolio presentation with a marketing assignment.

The PG Dip involves a written report including market analysis of your chosen product field. Practical work is presented by studio work and/or portfolio and an evaluative report.

For the MA you will present a cohesive body of creative work, supported by an extended report.

Course content

  • The cultural reception, dissemination, promotion and eventual disposal of a fashion product within international markets involves an astoundingly complex chain of activities. This programme allows you to develop a unique blend of management skills, master analytical tools and customer marketing techniques in order to understand and shape global retail operations.
  • You’ll study six compulsory modules in total, covering fashion marketing, retailing and a specialised fashion dissertation in the School of Design, and the management of logistics, supply chains and understanding global consumers in Leeds University Business School. You’ll also study two from a selection of fashion-based optional modules, allowing you the flexibility to specialise in an area of your choice.

Learning and teaching

This programme employs a variety of learning and teaching methods including lectures, seminars, tutorials and group discussions. The modules will utilise methods of learning, teaching and assessment which are appropriate to Masters level study, such as group discussions, presentations, and report writing. Although a proportion of the contact time will be spent in teaching, emphasis will also be placed upon the use of group and independent learning. Discussion and interactive sessions will encourage you to critically examine key elements of fashion retail and management further. You will have the opportunity to hear from external academic and professional speakers from the fashion and retail business world, and it may be possible to participate in retail colloquiums.

Assessment

You'll be assessed by a variety of methods. Assessment on the programme is designed to be an integral part of the learning process, allowing you to enhance and confirm your knowledge and practice. Formative feedback will be provided through a combination of self-reflection, peer group and tutor feedback. Summative assessments will provide a measure of the extent to which you have achieved the learning outcomes of the modules.

Assessment within the modules will take various forms including: coursework assignments, reports, group work, presentations, examinations and the dissertation. This programme combines strategic business design, fashion enterprise and social impact to help you become a successful fashion business innovator.

Run by the School of Design and Leeds Enterprise Centre, Leeds University Business School, the programme allows you to view the fashion industry from social and cultural as well as commercial perspectives.

Along with concepts such as consumer behaviour, supply chain structures, branding and marketing, you’ll also study the principles of business and entrepreneurship and how they relate to social enterprise. You’ll also address the challenges of sustainability.

You’ll mix design, business and market-centred innovation to gain a broad base of skills to thrive in a complex, fast-paced and rapidly evolving industry.

Course content

From the very start of the programme you’ll develop a broad base of knowledge. You’ll explore the concepts of entrepreneurship, enterprise and social enterprise as well as different ethical, social and sustainable approaches. You’ll study the challenges faced by social enterprises today and even the process of setting up a new business.

At the same time, you’ll learn about consumer behaviour and the fashion marketing cycle. You’ll research and develop prototype garments to explore how innovative design ideas can meet the challenges of sustainability and ethics, or make the most of emerging technologies.

In addition, you can tailor your degree to suit your interests and career plans with a choice of optional modules on topics such as fashion photography, textile design, fashion industry analysis and sustainability. You will be presented with a range of research methods in cultural studies to develop research skills by applying them in your independent Masters project, through discussion with the tutors and potential supervisors.

Your independent project can be developed as a traditional dissertation on a fashion related topic of your choice, or a more creative based Professional and Contextual Studies project. In the contextual route you’ll research and develop your own design solution – which you’ll exhibit at the end of the year – supported by case studies and other independent work.

From the appointment of JW Anderson as Creative Director to Loewe to the acquisition of stakes of Christopher Kane by Kering Group, all events seem to indicate that now more than ever fashion creation remains essential for the activities of large luxury brands and mass-market brands.

Despite an apparent return to a pure and fresh creativity, the components of fashion design related jobs have dramatically changed. Imagining garments in an intuitive way is only one aspect of a designer’s responsibilities. A head designer or a creative director must not only anticipate social and aesthetic changes, but also understand the strategic issues faced by brands in terms of positioning, market potential and communication.

Our Master of Arts in Contemporary Fashion Design was specifically designed to address these changes and is aimed at Fashion Design graduates who want to go beyond product design and development.

For instance our ‘Fashion Cross Culture’ module was developed with the Musée des Arts Décoratifs to provide a more sophisticated approach towards the analysis of cultural discrepancies and their effect on fashion. Another key module would be “Fashion Product Semiology”. It uses semiology as a methodology to decode a garment and to decrypt its aesthetic aspect in order to better understand how it is perceived.

- Developing student creativity with modules such as « Creative Process» that helps students become more aware of their own “creative logic” and increase their potential. The addition of practical workshops will provide students with a new approach on known production and designing techniques. For example the “Pattern and Draping Development” module introduces new research methods based on experimentation and opens new perspectives for students when it comes to finding inspiration.

- Helping our students understand how the fashion industries work and how brand strategies are crafted on a global context. Marketing, organisational issues, financial challenges as well as image and communication strategies will be discussed in a series of various modules

The course ends with students developing their own collection project with the guidance of a tutor. This project includes creating a garment and/or an accessories collection. The process involves designing prototypes for 12 silhouettes as well as developing marketing and business plans. This collection is then examined by a jury of professionals and the best students receive the opportunity to show their work to fashion professionals at the IFA Graduate Show that takes place during The Haute Couture Fashion Week. Students are also tutored to take part in several international contests that represent a great platform for young fashion designers.

As with the other IFA Paris courses, the Master of Arts in Contemporary Fashion Design benefits greatly from its Paris location. With its rich cultural life, its two museums dedicated to fashion, its 6 annual fashion weeks, hundreds of showrooms and textile fairs as well as the vicinity of small-scale crafts industries, the city of lights remains the undisputed fashion capital of the world.

All our programs are articulated around the ECTS framework as defined by the Bologne convention. After completing their course, students receive a total of 120 ECTS that can easily be transferred if they decide to study further. The MA Fashion Studies at Parsons Paris is the first master's program in its field in France and one of only a handful worldwide. In this groundbreaking 42-credit program, students explore the production, dissemination, and consumption of fashion from both historical and contemporary vantage points. The program investigates the different segments and meanings of fashion as creative and multifaceted industry – from haute couture to fast fashion; as a phenomenon dealing with identity, race, and gender; as an everyday act of consumption; as a material object; as an image; and as an artistic practice.

By situating fashion as a manifold phenomenon, the program casts light on the relationship between practice and theory as students explore the interdisciplinary theories and methodologies that have shaped the field of fashion studies while also discussing their applications within the fashion industry. The program also challenges students to engage with contemporary concerns such as sustainability, fashion curatorial practice, globalization, technological innovation, and digital fashion futures.

Core and elective courses open up broad perspectives on fashion and its connections with design, production, consumption, imagination, representation, embodiment, and identity. Finally, as fashion studies is inherently interdisciplinary and multi-methodological, courses examine fashion through the perspectives of anthropology, sociology, art history, gender studies, visual and material cultural studies, and film and media studies.

Paris and Access to Fashion

With Paris as a backdrop, the program brings students in contact with the European and French fashion industry and its cultural fields of production. Students are invited to engage with the industry through lectures and master classes held by fashion practitioners; special projects with fashion brands (mainly Paris based); visits to European and Parisian fashion trade fairs like Première Vision-Paris; unparalleled access and visits to fashion houses and ateliers; and the most prominent fashion and textile collections and archives in France, from the Musée Galleria to the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. The program also assists students in applying for internships with established and independent fashion brands during Paris Fashion Week and during the summer break while also encouraging them to independently observe Parisian streets, neighborhoods, and retail environments critical to the fashion system.

Skills, Competences, and Professional Possibilities

The aim of the MA Fashion Studies program is to create polyvalent and critical researchers and professionals able to adapt to the heterogeneity of the fashion industry and its various sectors. In particular, our students develop competencies in fashion communication – from fashion writing and criticism to "image-making"; in trend-forecasting and marketing analysis; in fashion curating; in the research and archival practices connected to private and public museums or/and brand heritage. Thanks to faculty contacts and the program's strategic geographical position, MA Fashion Studies functions as a European hub, giving students access to other important fashion cities like Milan, London, Antwerp, Berlin, and Stockholm as well as international fashion institutions like the Victoria and Albert Museum or the Fashion Museum of Antwerp (MoMu). The program sponsors public events, panels, open lectures and symposia on fashion, inviting established and emerging fashion scholars, curators, and professionals. This is a creative, project-based course focusing on the dynamic between creativity, technology and business awareness. The course develops the critical and creative, and technical and professional skills necessary to advance practice and stimulate innovation in the fashion industry.

As an MA Fashion student, you will explore the boundaries of creative fashion design and develop your digital skills utilising a range of prototyping technologies. The course will challenge you to re-examine the underpinning methodologies and ways of working that characterise creative practice in fashion. You will be encouraged to challenge the boundaries of traditional fashion design, practice and manufacture, and explore the creative opportunities offered by technology and new ways of working.

Course structure

1. Technology issues – Within the technology issues unit students will engage with 3 to 5 week project cycles that will enable them to explore ideas and build on skills in interdisciplinary, cross disciplinary and individually negotiated projects. These units are structured to encourage students to engage collaboratively with fellow students.

2. Business and innovation – Taught during the term before the Final Major Project Unit, this unit helps students develop an understanding of business and innovative practices in the creative industries. It challenges and supports fashion design students in turning their ideas and skills into viable, innovative market propositions and business plans.

3. Research process – This unit supports students in gaining the research skills needed for the development of students' individual projects. Concept and prototyping – Allows students to further develop their skills, focusing on their chosen specialist area within fashion and pursue a single line of inquiry, idea or theory embedded in fashion and research and develop the concept.

4. Major project – For the Major Project, students will develop and manage an individual programme of enquiry and creative development in fashion culminating in the realisation of a final collection, fully informed by professional and industrial contexts and multi-disciplinary perspectives.
