The College of Arts and Humanities has a Graduate Centre. The MA in Public Policy is designed to provide a high level training in the study of public policy and policy making at international, national and sub-state levels.

Key Features of MA in Public Policy

The MA in Public Policy provides a solid grounding in the key theoretical approaches to the study of public policy, and seeks to develop the knowledge and skills of those wishing to engage in further academic study. At the same time, the Public Policy MA focuses on the necessary skills involved in working in a public policy landscape now increasingly characterised by change and interdependence. Consequently, it will also develop the knowledge and skills of those wishing to, or already, pursuing a career in public policy research, policy advice, lobbying, public sector management or journalism.

The full-time Public Policy course structure is split across the year with three modules taken in each academic semester (a total of six modules) and then a dissertation over the summer. Students study four compulsory modules and two optional modules. The dissertation is written on a specialist research topic of the student's choosing.

About the Program

Modern pharmaceutical science encompasses a number of disciplines, including biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology, immunology, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, and medicinal chemistry. The field is unified by the search for novel drug targets and the development of new agents and formulations for the treatment biomedical disease. This includes cutting edge techniques to target drugs to sites of therapeutic action and to reduce adverse effects related to drug metabolism, lack of target selectivity, and pharmacogenetic differences within the human population. PhD’s in pharmaceutical science are well trained for drug discovery and development positions in academic labs, government (e.g., Food and Drug Administration), and the pharmaceutical or biotech industries.
Each student completes a core curriculum including foundation training in biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology and pharmaceutics designed to give students a basic understanding of the biomedical processes by which the body operates and the pharmaceutical agents and delivery systems available to interact with these systems. Electives studies offer the student the opportunity for specialization in more focused areas of interest, including receptor biology, molecular drug action, cell signaling, cancer research, pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism, and biotechnology. Communication, research design, professional skills and ethics are developed throughout the curriculum in complementary courses. You’ll study

You’ll take two semesters of compulsory and optional taught classes. These are followed by a three-month research project in your chosen area. Opportunities exist to do the project through the department's competitive MSc industrial internships.

The internships are offered in collaboration with selected department industry partners including Selex ES, ScottishPower, SmarterGridSolutions. You'll address real-world engineering challenges facing the partner, with site visits, access and provision of relevant technical data and/or facilities provided, along with an industry mentor and academic supervisor.

Assessment of the summer research project consists of four elements, with individual criteria:
1. Interim report (10%, 1,500 to 3,000 words) – The purpose of this report is to provide a mechanism for supervisors to provide valuable feedback on the project’s objectives and direction.

2. Poster Presentation (15%) – A vital skill of an engineer is the ability to describe their work to others and respond to requests for information. The poster presentation is designed to give you an opportunity to practise that.

3. Final report (55%) – This assesses the communication of project objectives and context, accuracy and relevant of background material, description of practical work and results, depth and soundness of discussion and conclusions, level of engineering achievement and the quality of the report’s presentation.

4. Conduct (20%) - Independent study, project and time management are key features of university learning. The level of your initiative & independent thinking and technical understanding are assessed through project meetings with your supervisor and your written logbooks.

Texas A&M at Qatar offers two graduate degrees in chemical engineering: the Master of Science (M.S.), thesis option only, and Master of Engineering (M.Eng.). The M.S. degree program includes a significant research component in addition to graduate course work.

Some research areas available within the program include liquefied natural gas safety, water and environmental management, desalination, gas-to-liquid conversion, applied catalysis, design and simulation of chemical reactors, energy efficiency, process integration and optimization, oil and gas processing, nonlinear modeling, and process dynamics and control. Modern equipment and computational tools are available in numerous laboratories to perform research in these and other areas.

The Master of Science curriculum is designed to develop new understanding through research and creativity.

Degree Plan

The student’s advisory committee, in consultation with the student, will develop the proposed degree plan. The degree plan must be completed and filed with the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies prior to the deadline imposed by the student’s college and no later than 90  days prior to the date of the final oral examination or thesis defense.

A student should submit the degree plan using the online Document Processing Submission System located at ogsdpss.tamu.edu.

A student submitting a proposed degree plan for a Master of Science degree at Texas A&M at Qatar should designate on the official degree plan form the program option “thesis option.”

Additional course work may be added to the approved degree plan by petition if it is deemed necessary by the advisory committee to correct deficiencies in the student’s academic preparation. No changes can be made to the degree plan once the student’s
Request for Final Examination or Request for Final Examination Exemption is approved by the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies.

Credit Requirement

A minimum of 32 semester credit hours of approved courses and research is required for the Master of Science degree.
Ordinarily, the student will devote the major portion of his or her time to work in one or two closely related fields. Other work will be in supporting fields of interest.

Foreign Languages

No specific language requirement exists for the Master of Science degree.

Thesis Proposal

For the thesis option Master of Science degree, the student must prepare a thesis proposal for approval by the advisory committee and the program chair. This proposal must be submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies at least 20 working days
prior to the submission of the request for the final examination.

Compliance issues must be addressed if a graduate student is performing research involving human subjects, animals, infectious biohazards, and recombinant DNA. A student involved in this type of research must check with the Office of Research Compliance

You’ll gain expert knowledge of the latest technologies that will drive the next mobile, wireless and communications revolution, and evolve our current 4G environment to 5G communications enabled systems. Applications will cover robotics & autonomous systems, UAVs, immersive systems and augmented realities, health monitoring, cyber-integrated systems, and smart grids. Data handling of the expected 50 billion IoT (internet of things) devices coming on-line to monitor traffic, weather, environment, smart agriculture, and even when your fridge runs out of milk, will also be explored.

5G will provide greater capacity, improved reliability, support at higher rates of mobility, and wider geographical coverage, at even higher data speeds and throughput and many new services and facilities.

What you’ll study

The research interests of the group are in line with the mainstream of statistics, with emphasis on both theoretical and applied subjects.

The group regularly receives research grants. The EPSRC has awarded two major grants, which support the National Centre for Statistical Ecology (NCSE), a joint venture between several institutions. A BBSRC grant supports stochastic modelling in bioscience.

Research areas

- Biometry and ecological statistics

Specific interests are in biometry, cluster analysis, stochastic population processes, analysis of discrete data, analysis of quantal assay data, overdispersion, and we enjoy good links within the University, including the School of Biosciences and the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology. A recent major joint research project involves modelling the behaviour of yeast prions and builds upon previous work in this area. We also work in collaboration with many external institutions.

- Bayesian statistics

Current work includes non-parametric Bayes, inference robustness, modelling with non-normal distributions, model uncertainty, variable selection and functional data analysis.

- Bioinformatics, statistical genetics and medical statistics

Research covers bioinformatics (eg DNA microarray data), involving collaboration with the School of Biosciences. Other interests include population genetics, clinical trials and survival analysis.

- Nonparametric statistics

Research focuses on empirical likelihood, high-dimensional data analysis, nonlinear dynamic analysis, semi-parametric modelling, survival analysis, risk insurance, functional data analysis, spatial data analysis, longitudinal data analysis, feature selection and wavelets.

If you choose to study our MA in Archaeology then you will be joining a vibrant, active Postgraduate community in a setting surrounded by sites of archaeological interest. We are lucky in the West Country to have prehistoric Dartmoor on our doorstep, where the recent Whitehorse Hill burial was uncovered. Exeter itself is a city built on Roman foundations and the nearby Ipplepen dig is shedding further light on Romano-British history. The Anglo-Saxons too were active in our part of the world and we have excellent interdisciplinary ties with the History Department and Centre for Medieval Studies. In the past there have been opportunities for Exeter students to participate in fieldwork and outreach activities in as diverse locations as Argentina, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, South Dakota and Texas. In some cases, fieldwork may consist of archaeological work in a museum rather than excavation.

The MA Archaeology programme is flexible, so you can choose the modules that interest you – including those on Experimental Archaeology, Human Osteoarchaeology and Zooarchaeology. If you’re interested in going on to doctoral study then our MA will give you the right training and our academic staff will be happy to support you through the process of funding applications.

On-campus - Full-time or Part-time

Full-time study on campus is completed in 12 months or part-time over 3 years. The course consists of the taught (Diploma) element and the Dissertation element. The MSc in Health Management provides strategic insights and business skills for those working across the worldwide health sector. The focus is on innovation and implementation with client-facing learning emphasising forward thinking.

Learning on the course is interactive, developing student’s business awareness, leadership and management capabilities; skills in project management and working in multi-disciplinary teams.

Throughout the course students engage in client-facing activities applying taught health management skills in management consultancy, internships, technology transfer and commercialisation projects.

Practical and relevant industry discussions are born from an international student body, working across different management and professional backgrounds, alongside speakers from the professional and scientific communities who promote practical industry relevant discussion and insights.

The course aims to enable students to engage in cross-sector and multi-disciplinary working, improve their team working abilities and client facing skills to achieve careers at the highest level within the international health sector.

Placements

The MSc Health Management includes placements, projects, and internship opportunities.

Health management consultancy is a placement that is part of the academic requirement of the course. Consultancies address a wide range of issues: strategy development, operational efficiency, new technologies and business start-ups. Consultancy teams are directed by the client, and facilitated and supported by the MHM academic team.

Technology transfer and marketisation projects provide opportunities for training and mentoring in commercialisation, on-the-job learning in multi-disciplinary teams and in some cases the opportunity to join a start-up management team.

Internship opportunities are available through the MHM Intern Development Programme. This offers opportunities with some of the most influential healthcare organisations in London. Internships are three-month periods of work experience, and opportunities to leverage career experience and direction. These are in the winter and spring semesters, as the health management consultancy placement is completed in the summer semester.

The MSc Health Management is based in City’s Franklin Building close to the City of London, the School of Health Sciences, and Cass Business School.

As an international city and global health centre, London is an outstanding location for health management studies. Major international corporations are headquartered in London, as well as healthcare think tanks, and policy institutes. It is the centre of the national health service (NHS) for England, and the largest strategic health authority in the United Kingdom. This reflects in the range of placements, projects, and internships available on the course.

The assessment strategy reflects the management task, with a wide range of assessments allowing flexibility to tailor business knowledge to career needs. Collaborative group assessments emphasise communication and influencing skills as well as providing opportunities to address larger inter-connected challenges. Written assignments emphasise the principles of management and the core business functions and develop skills in organisation analysis and preparing business reports. Exams focus on specific applied skill sets for managers and leaders.

The health management consultancy project embodies the client-facing emphasis of the course, and the approach to assessment.

Modules

The MSc Health Management comprises seven modules and a 12-15,000 word health sector dissertation.

The emphasis is on practical and applied business skills, looking across the health sector. The outlook is international. From health services to pharma, to management consultancy, the course develops a wide range of industry relevant business skills.
