This programme offers a detailed overview of health informatics, including telehealth, mHealth, data analytics, knowledge management and decision support. You’ll study modules totalling 60 credits. These are made up of two core (compulsory) taught modules and two optional modules from a range offered in Health Informatics or Health Sciences. Learning and teaching

This CILIP-accredited course is aimed at health care professionals who want to improve services in their sector by getting more out of information and communication technologies. It’s taught online so you can fit it around your work.

Alongside the more specialised knowledge, you’ll acquire valuable transferable skills such as presentation and report writing. We can also help you develop leadership and management capabilities.

How we teach

All our courses (except our distance learning courses) include lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical laboratory classes, group work, online discussion, case studies and lectures by visiting speakers. Our MA Librarianship course also includes visits to library and information service organisations. Learning Environment

The iSpace is an open plan, social learning area for students. It has display facilities, open-access PCs and bookable partitioned group work areas. Teaching and learning

Students have the opportunity to work within their practice or other health care settings, and learn from lecturers who are experienced advanced nurse practitioners engaged in active clinical practice. Assessment strategies include coursework, examinations, reports, seminar presentations, portfolios, skills schedules and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs). These lead to a University of Edinburgh postgraduate award of academic credit. Full-time students will usually study two modules per semester, spend two days a week in classes and two-three days in the clinical area.

Teaching and learning

The programme is taught by academic staff from the School of Health Sciences, supported by clinical colleagues. Most of the modules are worth 15 credits (or 1\8 of the total programme). However, some modules are worth 30 credits.

A range of teaching and learning strategies are used, depending upon the nature of the material; these will include lectures and small group tutorials, group work, simulated practice and visits.

Assessment

The assessments are equally as varied, and will include course work, online projects, invigilated examination and practical examination.

Your dissertation is worth 60 credits (1\3 of the entire programme) and is a piece of research undertaken with the supervision of an academic member of staff with a special interest in your topic. They are appointed by the programme director or the module leader.

You are required to undertake 15 days additional experience in an area of, or that may be of, responsibility, even if not central to the defined area of practice. This can be anywhere in the world. Past students have visited Denmark and Scotland, for example, as well as working elsewhere in London. They have worked with food banks, specialist nurses, environmental health officers and been involved in community development projects.

For the final ten weeks of the programme, you will work consistently in practice, consolidating your learning.

During your placement, you will have at least three visits from your link lecturer (who is also your personal tutor) to support learning in practice and facilitate theory- practice development.
