Who is it for?

These courses are for high-performing, self-directed individuals who want to learn about complex problems of health and healthcare from a psychological perspective. Applicants will have the desire to conduct innovative research to understand these issues and develop and evaluate potential solutions. The programme is a Stage 1 Health Psychology qualification accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). It has been designed for students who would like to go on to a PhD or DPsych in Health Psychology.

The MSc Health Psychology is for students with an undergraduate degree accredited by the British Psychological Society. If you do not have Graduate Basis for Registration with the BPS but would like to undertake a Masters degree in this subject, we offer the MSc Psychology and Health as an equivalent programme with identical modules (but no accreditation by the BPS).

Objectives

Health psychology explores the psychological and behavioural processes that influence the maintenance and promotion of health, the development of illness, and the delivery of healthcare through rigorous research that feeds into evidence-based practice.

Teaching at City promotes the scientist-practitioner model in which research influences how we practice, while allowing our experiences in practice to shape the research questions we address.

We recognise that great research will not make a difference to people’s lives unless the lessons learned feed into interventions for the public, patients and healthcare professionals.  You will learn how to make research evidence accessible to help maximise its impact.

Taught by a team of leading research-active academics, who are members of the Centre for Health Services Research (CHSR), the MSc Health Psychology/ Psychology & Health programme is designed to give you foundational knowledge to propel you to an exciting career in the discipline.

Here are some examples of the kinds of questions the course considers:

  • How can psychological theory help us understand health and illness behaviours?
  • What can be done to promote and sustain health lifestyles?
  • How can we help people cope with a diagnosis?
  • What are the challenges facing individuals living with long-term conditions?
  • How can we make complex behavioural interventions more effective?

Accreditation

The MSc in Health Psychology has been accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) since 1999 and confers the Stage 1 requirements towards becoming a Health Psychologist.

The MSc in Psychology and Health, which is not accredited by the BPS, was set up in 1999 for applicants who do not have Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the BPS, but who have an interest in psychological issues related to health.

Teaching and learning

The course uses a range of teaching methods including classroom teaching, seminars and workshops. You will also be able to learn from our on-site TECS lab. This is a dedicated smart home equipped with tele-health and tele-care applications and an adjacent monitoring system.

The purpose of the TECS lab is to enable researchers to monitor long-term conditions, and use technology to track an individual’s health in real time. For example seat and bed occupancy sensors enable health psychologists to monitor physical movement and intervene when routine behaviours are disrupted.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a varied combination of formats throughout the programme including coursework, examination, a diary component, online discussion forums and a significant piece of empirical research.

Modules

The programme consists of eight compulsory modules and all the teaching takes place in the first two terms. In term one you will be introduced to behavioural medicine, lifestyle, gender and culture, theoretical foundations of health psychology and research design and statistics. In the second term you study understanding and managing long term conditions, developing complex interventions, professional practice and contextual issues in health psychology and advanced research design and statistics. The third term is dedicated to the dissertation.

You may have the opportunity to interact directly with patients or healthcare professionals at the dissertation stage of this Masters degree. You will be conducting your own independent research and this may, for example, involve interviewing patients or professionals about a particular subject, or delivering behaviour change interventions.

To become a qualified researcher and practitioner, you will need to be able to understand and critique published research and to understand practitioner issues, so you can conduct your own research from scratch. At City we will encourage you to conduct research on the front line working on projects that require ethical approval, where you are engaging with real people so you can have a direct impact on their lives.

Career prospects

Health psychologists work in academia as researchers and within the NHS and the wider healthcare sector. The nature of the work means you will be trying to influence public health policy in terms of the way that health care is practised. You will also be evaluating how health care professionals do their work while adhering to the best clinical standards.

Becoming a healthcare psychologist

As a UK student, because the Health Psychology MSc is accredited, it is known as Stage 1 of the standard training in healthcare psychology. By successfully completing this course you will be able to move on to Stage 2 training (a doctoral level qualification in health psychology). This leads to becoming a fully recognised health psychologist whereby you can apply for Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Full membership of the Division of Health Psychology means you will also be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Chartered Health Psychologist. You can only use the protected title ‘Health Psychologist’ by registering with the HCPC, the statutory regulator.

We are delighted to announce that a limited number of tuition fee scholarships have been granted by the Digital Health & Care Institute for the September 2018 entry of MSc e-Health. To be considered for the scholarship, you should indicate your intention to select the MSc e-Health stream within your Personal Statement during the application process. Scholarships will be awarded on a first come, first served basis to applicants who are normally eligible for Scottish Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) funding. This course is also recognised as by SAAS for access to postgraduate tuition fee and cost-of-living loans for UK and EU applicants. For all such applicants, residency criteria apply.

Our e-Health course focuses on teaching the advance topics of e-Health including:

You will develop your practical skills through a comprehensive understanding of fundamental knowledge and hands-on experience of e-Health technologies within industry and academia.

Modules will focus on planning, analysing, developing, evaluating, deploying, and managing e-Health systems/services for modern day organisations/businesses.

All modules are designed to respect the overarching themes of e-Health, delivering research informed teaching in lectures, tutorials, and laboratory sessions; other modules will focus on academic, research and ethical practices within a professional environment.

In the course, unique and challenging modules are introduced, for example: Introduction to e-Health; Mobile networks and smartphone applications; Data mining and visualisation.

Course Details

Our e-Health course was motivated by the growing importance of e-Health (Connected Health, Digital Health, Tele-Health, m-Health). According to grand view research, the total market size of e-Health will grow to £253 billion by 2022. In addition, the NHS has forecasted the funding gap of £30billion by 2020-2021 that can only be addressed by using smart technologies to reduce the cost.

The Master of Applied Science (MAppSc) is a 180-point, coursework postgraduate degree. A candidate would normally be a graduate but the degree is also open to those with other relevant qualifications.

The MAppSc is designed for students who wish to pursue an interdisciplinary programme of study underpinned by science that delivers versatile skills relevant to multiple end-users. Optional paths are available that enphasize commercialisation, workplace-based projects or independent study.

The MAppSc can be completed in 12 months or in stages, providing flexibility for recent graduates and those currently employed.

Structure of the Programme

The programme of study:

-shall consist of approved papers at 400-level or higher worth at least 180 points, selected from the papers specified in Science Schedule D for the Master of Applied Science subject concerned, and including at least one of APPS 596-598

-shall normally include papers from more than one subject.

-may, with the approval of the Head of Department or Course Director concerned, include papers worth up to 60 points from 400- and 500-level papers other than those specified in Schedule D.

-A candidate who has completed the requirements for the Postgraduate Certificate or the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Science shall be exempted from those papers in the programme for the degree which have previously been passed for the certificate or diploma.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at BGU, established 2000, conducts vibrant cutting-edge research across a broad spectrum of fields, led by 10 faculty members. Areas of research include biomedical optics, bioelectronics, biomechanics, biomembranes, biomaterials, medical and tele robotics, neuroscience, biopharmaceutics, and physiological signal processing. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and research facilities supported by numerous prestigious academic funds. The department invests considerable efforts in providing students with hands-on experience in laboratory classes that develop engineering skills, particularly in two clusters: Biomedical Signal processing and Biomechanics. Many of the biomedical engineers who graduated from the department now hold key positions, nationally and internationally, in academic institutions and the biomed industry.

M.Sc. degree in Biomedical Engineering

The BME Department offers graduate studies towards both M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Biomedical Engineering. The The M.Sc. degree is typically completed within two academic years (four semesters). The program is research oriented and conducted in the BME laboratories under the guidance of our faculty members.  It includes graduate-level coursework and a research thesis that presents the unique scientific contribution of the student.  Many of our M.Sc. students qualify for doctoral studies in the Combined Ph.D.t, such that the M.Sc. thesis can also

Application requirements

Applicants to the M.Sc. Program in the BME Department should hold a B.Sc. degree in Biomedical Engineering or in closely related fields from an accredited institution at a minimum GPA of 80/100, as well as have a TOEFL score of at least 85/120 or an equivalent score in an internationally recognized English proficiency exam. The English proficiency requirement is waived for applicants who received their B.Sc. degree in a program taught in English. GRE is recommended but not required. Additionally, prior to applying to the M.Sc. Program, the applicant is expected to contact a potential advisor among the BME faculty, as well as the director of graduate studies for further information.

The M.Sc. Thesis

The research leading to the M.Sc. thesis is conducted throughout the two years of studies. The student is expected to publish and present the research results in leading international journals and conferences. The thesis is evaluated by a scientific committee through a written report and an oral examination.
