Structure and content

The programme has been designed around the specific themes of Innovation & Technology Management. The units are structured to provide a strong and coherent narrative. The introductory unit takes a high level look at innovation management, introducing the key themes and concepts that will be explored in more depth throughout the year. Subsequent units are focused on an aspect of innovation such as: creativity; strategy; new product development; and commercialisation. Every unit is bespoke - that is, tailored to the exact needs of the ITM programme. Each unit is delivered in modular format, over 1 week, which creates a unique, in depth learning experience.

Business, ethics and society

Business, ethics and society investigates and activates the role of business as ethical and social leaders. The specialisation equips students with an understanding of the theoretical foundations and practical issues of internal and external ethical and societal forces that businesses face, respond to and activate. Business, ethics and society especially develops students' critical engagement and leadership capabilities to manage diversity, inclusiveness, and work and life. These capacities are developed within a strong context of ethics and corporate responsibility, and the domestic and international environments in that organisations operate. The specialisation prepares students for active managerial roles within organisations in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Commercialisation

Commercialisation is the process or cycle of introducing a new product or production method into the market. The commercialisation process or cycle can be applied in many different contexts, including: art, design, and architecture; arts and humanities; business and economics; education; engineering; information technology; law; medicine, nursing and health sciences; pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences; and science and technology. The specialisation provides a comprehensive business-focused setting to help students develop the necessary business and entrepreneurial acumen and commercialisation knowledge to succeed. Commercialisation especially develops students' new venture finance, patenting, innovation, and wealth pathways skills and knowledge. The specialisation prepares students, particularly facilitated by the commercialisation project, for commercialisation and entrepreneurial roles within organisations in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Information technology

The information technology discipline allows students to build upon the core program with six units dealing with current practices and emerging strategies for the application of information technology in business management. Students are introduced to management of the creation, storage, recall and dissemination of business records within organisation-wide frameworks and they will gain a high-level of understanding of the processes of project management. Units are taught by the Faculty of Information Technology.

Law and responsible business

The fortunes of a business can quickly turn around if it does not pay proper attention to the laws that regulate its organisation and activities. The law provides the framework for all aspects of business from the internal management of business organisations to their relationships with clients, consumers and the public. The units in this specialisation provide students with an understanding of the legal framework within which business operates and the fundamental laws that regulate business activities and transactions, with particular emphasis on how legal and social responsibility considerations should impact business decision-making.

Managing human capital

Managing human capital is the recognition of people as valuable contributors, and the systems and operations for investing in people to enhance their contributions. The specialisation equips students with an understanding of the theoretical foundations and practical issues of managing and developing people within an international context. Managing human capital develops students' strategic and operational people management knowledge and skills, particularly for diverse, inclusive, and productive workplaces. This specialisation prepares students for careers in human resource management, industrial relations, consulting, public sector management, and general people management roles.

Marketing

Marketing is a fun, dynamic, complex activity (and discipline) that focuses on providing value to both organisations and consumers. Very simply, marketing is about matching what an organisation has (or can do) with someone who wants it. Marketing is about selling, it is about advertising, but it also so much more. The study and practice of the 'so much more' is what makes marketing so interesting!

In today's dynamic and global business environment, marketing permeates all areas of operations and forms an integral element of business growth and achievement. Highly qualified, innovative and international marketing practitioners, supported by well researched and pertinent marketing knowledge, are increasingly in demand.

Project management

A project is a collection of activities and resources undertaken to achieve planned objectives, which could be defined in terms of time, quality and cost or economic outcomes. Project management is the process of ensuring defined goals are achieved in relation to a project. This specialisation provides graduates with the knowledge, technology and processes employed in project management that allow them to pursue such professional roles in industry and government. This specialisation will provide graduates with an understanding and ability to apply the theories and concepts of project management, and will assist in a variety of roles in industry or government. Graduates will be able to analyse requirements for the management of given projects, identify the applicable methods and develop innovative project management strategies and processes.

Quantitative business analysis

Students will be provided with advanced quantitative skills required to carry out statistical analysis in business, economics and finance. They will also develop skills to report on the findings of their quantitative analysis.

Risk management

Risk is defined by AS/NZS ISO 31000: 2009 as 'the effect of uncertainty on objectives'. The management of risk is an evolving discipline that builds on current knowledge in a diverse range of activities. The risk management specialisation focuses on operational and financial risk in today's commercial world. It provides extended skills in the strategic and process applications of risk management and prepares for the increasingly complex risk management issues faced in many areas of business and government. It prepares graduates for roles that are required to address business, insurance and financial risk. The range of units undertaken will greatly assist those seeking employment in managerial positions where risk management is an expanding field of practice.

Supply chain management

Supply chain management involves the coordination of people, organisations, technologies and processes to ensure optimal supply of products and services. This specialisation develops students' capacity to design and optimise supply chains, and to manage them to achieve strategic business outcomes. Supply chain management enhances students' skills and knowledge in innovation and improvement, business optimisation, services and operations management, and sustainable operations management. The specialisation prepares students for careers in supply chain management roles in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Sustainability

The sustainability specialisation focuses on current practices and emerging strategies for improving corporate sustainability, particularly in social, economic and environmental domains. The units within this specialisation will provide insights into sustainability from the perspectives of governance, ethics and management. The MSc Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Technology degree contains a unique 60 credit hands-on project that is run in partnership with Waterloo University, Canada. During this project, you'll work on an innovation challenge and will apply the tools and techniques you've practiced over the previous year. Using Waterloo’s Virtual Incubation Platform, you'll pitch to experienced venture capitalists and other potential investors in the UK and Canadian ecosystems.

Student competitions

You'll be expected to participate in national and international entrepreneurship and innovation prizes. Strathclyde University has a strong track record of success in various prestigious competitions and there are considerable free support networks in place to help students with their entries.

Assessment

You will be ideally positioned to enter into a PhD after graduation, but could also pursue a number of career paths including: technology transfer officer within higher education institutions and national agencies, R&D project manager, commercialisation manager within a life science start-up, or development manager within the pharmaceutical sector. Prior to joining our University, Suneel worked as a technology transfer specialist at the University of Leeds and as a research scientist at GE Advanced Materials.He has spent most of the last 10 years in research and development, product development, technology transfer, innovation strategy, knowledge management and consultancy. He has worked with multinational companies such as Lucite International, Ineos, Dow, LyondellBasell and Intellectual Ventures.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Created in the context of the rapid advancement of the renewable-energy industry, this Masters programme investigates both renewable energy and systems technologies.

It is designed to build your competence and confidence in the R&D and engineering tasks that are demanded of scientific engineers in the renewable and sustainable-development sector.

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year and part-time students must study at least two taught technical modules per academic year. FACILITIES, EQUIPMENT AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Modules related to the different groups are taught by a total of six full-time members of staff and a number of visiting lecturers.

As part of their learning experience, students have at their disposal a wide range of relevant software needed to support the programme material dissertation projects. In recent years, this work included the design of various knowledge-based and business systems on the internet, the application of optimisation algorithms, and semantic web applications.

Numerous laboratory facilities across the Faculty and the University are also available for those opting for technology-based projects, such as the process engineering facility, a control and robotics facility and signal processing labs.

The work related to the MSc dissertation can often be carried out in parallel with, and in support of, ongoing research. In the past, several graduates have carried on their MSc research to a PhD programme.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Engineers and scientists are increasingly expected to have skills in information systems engineering and decision-support systems alongside their main technical and/or scientific expertise.

Graduates of this programme will be well prepared to help technology-intensive organisations make important decisions in view of vast amounts of information by adopting, combining, implementing and executing the right technologies.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

This programme investigates both renewable energy and systems technologies in order to produce scientific researchers and engineers who are competent in the R&D and engineering tasks applicable to the renewable energy and sustainable development sectors.

Its primary aims lie in developing a global understanding of the major types of renewable energy technologies, in-depth knowledge of the technology for biomass-based renewable energy, and knowledge and skills in systems modelling and optimisation.

A balanced curriculum will be provided with a core of renewable energy and systems engineering modules supplemented by a flexible element by way of elective modules that permit students to pursue an element of specialisation relevant to their backgrounds, interests and/or career aspirations.

An integrated approach is taken so as to provide a coherent view that explores the interrelationships between the various components of the programme.

- Technology evaluation and commercialisation
In this module you'll deploy an algorithmic model to evaluate the business opportunity that can be created from a technology's unique advantages. You'll be guided towards identifying a technology project idea that you will evaluate for its business potential. To do this you'll conduct detailed research and analysis in order to evaluate the business potential of this technology idea. The outcomes from this will serve as the basis for implementation of the selected technology in the business sense. Through the module you'll develop the appropriate commercialisation strategy and write the business plan for your high-tech start-up company.

- Technical, research and professional skills
This module is taught to all our engineering Masters students; it provides training for the skills that are necessary for successful completion of Masters studies, as well as your professional development in the long-term future. More specifically, the module teaches how to search and gather relevant technical information, how to extract the essence from a piece of technical literature, how to carry out a critical review of a research paper, how to write a feasibility report, how to give presentations and put your thoughts across effectively, and how to manage a project in terms of time and progress in a group project environment.

- Economic aspects of engineering projects
This module focuses on economic management and viability appraisal. It develops the specific expertise that an engineering manager may need in order to construct and critically examine effective economic arguments. The module will arm you with sound economic assessment techniques and processes, as well as providing you with skills to produce effective economic appraisal documents. You'll critically evaluate the financial risks involved in engineering projects and economic decision-making processes. It will include a special focus on R&D and new technologies projects.

- Electromechanical systems and manufacturing technology
This module covers a broad range of conventional and advanced manufacturing technologies in the context of engineering management. You'll develop your understanding of the strategic significance of high value manufacturing, in terms of new and emerging technologies and the management of associated assets as contributory factors in achieving a sustainable competitive advantage. You'll appreciate the synergistic integration of mechanical engineering, electronic control and systems and understand how they are realised as mechatronics solutions to improve manufacturing processes, effectively manage time, waste and energy thus enhancing the competitive advantage of the business. The themes of globalization, concurrent engineering and related manufacturing strategies are explored through lectures, case studies and a combination of interactive workshop and laboratory sessions.

- Supply chain engineering and operations management
This module explores the concepts and strategies related to supply chain and operations management within an engineering context. It develops your understanding of the issues practising engineers can expect to encounter, so enabling you to make informed strategic decisions with respect to the management of activities associated with the creation of products and services. Whilst exploring these key themes the module will closely examine current, established and emerging procedures and processes related to the effective allocation of resources within a variety of engineering environments. A combination of lectures, workshops and case studies will be used to develop your ability to effectively apply a range of tools and methodologies associated with strategic planning, effective implementation and problem resolution.

- Energy, the environment and product life-cycle
This module is composed of three elements. The first concentrates on energy utilisation and management; the second on environmental issues; and the third on the Product Life Cycle. The module addresses the ethical, economic and socio/cultural changes in the society that will be influenced by (and have an influence on) engineering practice. This module will enhance your ability to think critically about future challenges and will also challenge you to explore alternative strategies and tools to develop new sustainable engineering solutions. This module will cover legislative issues, enabling you to work with current legislation, evaluate and possibly develop appropriate environmental legislation.

- MSc engineering project / dissertation
This module requires you to undertake a major project in an area that is relevant to your Masters course. You'll choose your project and carry it out under the guidance of your supervisor. At the end of the project, you are required to present a dissertation, which forms a major element of the assessment. The dissertation tests your ability to integrate information from various sources, to conduct an in-depth investigation, to critically analyse results and information obtained and to propose solutions. The other element of the assessment includes an oral examination (viva-voce). The Individual Project carries 60 credits and is a major part of a Masters program.

Methods of assessment

Assessment is through examinations and also practical work and assignments using case studies, group work, research projects and presentations.

Development of practical skills

You'll develop your practical engineering skills through work carried out in laboratories and workshops; in industry through supervised work experience; in individual and group project work; in design work; and in the development and use of computer software in design, analysis and control. Evidence of group working and of participation in a major project is expected.

Overview course structure

The course is based on two semesters per academic year with three modules being delivered and assessed in each semester on the full-time mode. The part-time curriculum consists of the same modules, set out over two years.

The Master in Engineering Management develops those areas of management that you'll require to progress in a management career, but firmly anchored in an engineering context.

- Digital signal processing
This module introduces the theory behind digital signal processing and how DSP can be implemented in real-time. You will gain an understanding of how to program hardware to perform fundamental DSP algorithms such as filtering and spectral analysis. You will gain a fundamental understanding of DSP algorithms and how to implement them in hardware for real-time applications.

- Pattern recognition and machine learning
This module introduces the fundamentals of both statistical learning theory and practical approaches for solving pattern recognition problems. Further, it consolidates lectures with experimental computer-based assignments to inculcate the basics of machine learning and classification. The module covers the fundamentals of pattern recognition and provides the essential background to machine learning and classification.

- Advanced instrumentation and control
This module develops advanced techniques in data acquisition and manipulation required for instrumentation and control applications. Further, it consolidates lectures with experimental computer-based assignments using industry standard hardware and software (NI DAQ and LabView). The module develops your knowledge and experience in data acquisition and virtual instrumentation used in Industry for control purposes.

- Advanced power electronics and renewable energy systems
The material in this module is divided into two parts. The first part covers the analysis and operation of power electronics and machines and their application in the areas of power conversion, power conditioners and electrical machine drives mostly, found on the 'load' side of the electrical power system but sometimes integrated into the supply network. This part will also include elements of computer control systems that are designed to produce non-sinusoidal waveforms and methods of dealing with undesirable harmonics and their effects on the power network. The second part of the module will focus on renewable energy and sustainability. This will include: solar cells, biomass, wind and wave power; intelligent environmental sensing and feedback (in areas of pollution, petroleum, energy consumption, etc.); and renewable design and effectiveness (solar, wind and wave).

Bio-energy

Our research spans the whole supply chain:
-Growing novel feedstocks (various biomass crops, algae etc)
-Processing feedstocks in novel ways
-Converting feedstocks into fuels and chemical feedstocks

Cockle Park Farm has an innovative anaerobic digestion facility. Work at the farm will develop, integrate and exploit technologies associated with the generation and efficient utilisation of renewable energy from land-based resources, including biomass, biofuel and agricultural residues.

We also develop novel technologies for gasification and pyrolysis. This large multidisciplinary project brings together expertise in agronomy, land use and social science with process technologists and engineers and is complemented by molecular studies on the biology of non-edible oilseeds as sources for production of biodiesel.

Novel geo-energy

New ways of obtaining clean energy from the geosphere is a vital area of research, particularly given current concerns over the limited remaining resources of fossil fuels.

Newcastle University has been awarded a Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher Education for its world-renowned Hydrogeochemical Engineering Research and Outreach (HERO) programme. Building on this record of excellence, the Sir Joseph Swan Centre for Energy Research seeks to place the North East at the forefront of research in ground-source heat pump systems, and other larger-scale sources of essentially carbon-free geothermal energy, and developing more responsible modes of fossil fuel use.

Our fossil fuel research encompasses both the use of a novel microbial process, recently patented by Newcastle University, to convert heavy oil (and, by extension, coal) to methane, and the coupling of carbon capture and storage (CCS) to underground coal gasification (UCG) using directionally drilled boreholes. This hybrid technology (UCG-CCS) is exceptionally well suited to early development in the North East, which still has 75% of its total coal resources in place.

Sustainable power

We undertake fundamental and applied research into various aspects of power generation and energy systems, including:
-The application of alternative fuels such as hydrogen and biofuels to engines and dual fuel engines
-Domestic combined heat and power (CHP) and combined cooling, heating and power (trigeneration) systems using waste vegetable oil and/or raw inedible oils
-Biowaste methanisation
-Biomass and biowaste combustion, gasification
-Biomass co-combustion with coal in thermal power plants
-CO2 capture and storage for thermal power systems
-Trigeneration with novel energy storage systems (including the storage of electrical energy, heat and cooling energy)
-Engine and power plant emissions monitoring and reduction technology
-Novel engine configurations such as free-piston engines and the reciprocating Joule cycle engine

Fuel cell and hydrogen technologies

We are recognised as world leaders in hydrogen storage research. Our work covers the entire range of fuel cell technologies, from high-temperature hydrogen cells to low-temperature microbial fuel cells, and addresses some of the complex challenges which are slowing the uptake and impact of fuel cell technology.

Sustainable development and use of key resources

Our research in this area has resulted in the development and commercialisation of novel gasifier technology for hydrogen production and subsequent energy generation.

We have developed ways to produce alternative fuels, in particular a novel biodiesel pilot plant that has attracted an Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) AspenTech Innovative Business Practice Award.

Major funding has been awarded for the development of fuel cells for commercial application and this has led to both patent activity and highly-cited research. Newcastle is a key member of the SUPERGEN Fuel Cell Consortium. Significant developments have been made in fuel cell modelling, membrane technology, anode development and catalyst and fuel cell performance improvements.

The global population is projected to increase dramatically from 7 to 9 billion in the next 30 years, causing an unprecedented demand for food and increased pressure on land. The aim of this Food Security Degree is to provide you with knowledge and skills relating to the broad topic of food security, incorporating socio-economic, animal and crop aspects.

Programme structure

We welcome students from diverse educational backgrounds and we anticipate that many will be unfamiliar with all the topics in this programme. Teaching Methods
Most courses are taught through lectures and tutorials, in which there will be discussion of key concepts and training in the critical appraisal of published information. Two courses provide training in laboratory skills: Molecular Lab Skills and Plant Genetic Engineering. The project will involve an independent investigation of a selected topic in food security under supervision from an expert in the field.

Placements

The MSc Health Management includes placements, projects, and internship opportunities.

Health management consultancy is a placement that is part of the academic requirement of the course. Consultancies address a wide range of issues: strategy development, operational efficiency, new technologies and business start-ups. Consultancy teams are directed by the client, and facilitated and supported by the MHM academic team.

Technology transfer and marketisation projects provide opportunities for training and mentoring in commercialisation, on-the-job learning in multi-disciplinary teams and in some cases the opportunity to join a start-up management team.

Internship opportunities are available through the MHM Intern Development Programme. This offers opportunities with some of the most influential healthcare organisations in London. Internships are three-month periods of work experience, and opportunities to leverage career experience and direction. These are in the winter and spring semesters, as the health management consultancy placement is completed in the summer semester.

Careers

Dramatic progress has been made in the past few years in the field of photonic technologies. These advances have set the scene for a major change in commercialisation activity where photonics and electronics will converge in a wide range of information, sensing, display, and personal healthcare systems. Importantly, photonics will become a fundamental underpinning technology for a much greater range of companies outside the conventional photonics arena, who will in turn require those skilled in photonic systems to have a much greater degree of interdisciplinary training, and indeed be expert in certain fields outside photonics.

Employability
Our students are highly employable and have the opportunity to gain industry experience during their MRes year in large aerospace companies like Qioptiq, BAE Systems, Selex ES; medical equipment companies such as Hitachi; and technology and communications companies such as Toshiba through placements based both in the UK and overseas. Several smaller spin-out companies from both UCL and Cambridge also offer projects. The Centre organises industry day events which provide an excellent opportunity to network with senior technologists and managers interested in recruiting photonics engineers. A recent 2014 graduate is now working as a Fiber Laser Development Engineer for Coherent Scotland. Another is a Patent Attorney for HGF Ltd.

Rapid growth in the global medical devices industry demands an innovative fusion of biomedical, materials sciences, manufacturing, and engineering knowledge - and the University of Auckland is responding to the challenge.

This programme is aimed primarily at engineers and health professionals to provide them with the necessary broad range of knowledge in the various technologies underpinning medical devices.

Programme Structure

Taught or Research (120 points)
The programme is normally two semesters and will accommodate part-time enrolments. To best meet the needs of participants with different backgrounds, including those coming from industry, the programme is provided as both a research masters and a taught masters.

All students complete two core courses that give an overview of technology and practices related to medical devices.

Students have a choice of completing a 90-point research portfolio or a smaller 60-point research project. In both cases the research is a significant component of the study programme and will involve working with a research group or being seconded to industry for a supervised research project that provides specialisation in a particular aspect of medical device technology. For participants without a medical background, a clinical secondment will be used to strengthen the experiential component of their learning.

Participants enrolled in the 90-point research portfolio will prepare a written thesis, while participants enrolled in the 60-point project will prepare a written project report. Both are examined following the standard the University of Auckland processes.

The taught masters option provides a wide variety of courses that participants can draw upon to best address their own areas of interest. Courses are lecture-based and delivered as modules, each taught by the University’s research specialists ensuring participants meet the multidisciplinary requirements of medical devices technology.
