The academic team includes 16 criminology-specific academics with extensive research and engagement with the criminal justice system who bring their real-life experience to their teaching.

Nearly all criminology staff have received funding from leading research institutions and organisations such as Economic and Social Research Council, and they often work in partnership with state and third sector organisations such as Youth Offending Teams and homelessness charities.

They play leading roles in professional associations such as the British Society of Criminology and the Academy of the Social Sciences and serve on the editorial boards of leading disciplinary journals.

The department also has excellent international links within Europe, America and Australia where members of the staff team have been Visiting Fellows and Professors.

Teaching And Assessment

You will learn about research methods and their relevance to the global study of criminology, giving you the relevant skills to conduct your own research and engage with contemporary debates. These debates will be covered in the areas of global penal policy, international policing and security, and social exclusion.

All modules are compulsory, but assessment topics and dissertation allow you to concentrate on your own areas of interest as you develop your knowledge of theory, methods and practical topics.

Your learning combines formal input and practical exercises and discussion, allowing you to develop your ideas through interaction with academic staff and your peers.

Your dissertation is an independent and innovative piece of work, which is designed to demonstrate your skills in researching, collecting evidence, and organising that evidence. Working independently, with the support of a tutor, you’ll find your own sources and evaluate their helpfulness to your study topic.

Introduction

For individuals working in a health setting, this course provides the knowledge and skills to develop careers and become a Chartered Psychologist. You will come to UWE Bristol for around 14 Professional Doctorate Training Days and supervision meetings each year over three years, while working in your existing role as you carry out your research. You receive strong course support in person and online, so wherever you are in the country you can be sure of the best support.

You will learn from our outstanding team of HCPC-registered Health Psychologists, benefiting from their expertise in research, behaviour change, consultancy and teaching and training and their extensive professional network and strong links in the region. Teaching and learning

Diverse teaching methods (predominantly two hour lectures and one-and-a-half hour workshops) are employed throughout the GDL programme in order to give you the best opportunity to acquire legal knowledge and skills.

A number of those teaching on the GDL have qualifications and experience as barristers or solicitors, and a significant number of others hold research degrees.

Assessments (both coursework and exams) are spread throughout the course so that you will have an ongoing awareness of your progress. These teaching and assessment methods are described in the course handbook, and their effectiveness is monitored and analysed by students and staff in the module feedback system and the GDL annual review process.

Practical skills

In recognition of the professional nature of the course, our GDL places special emphasis on helping you to gain the legal skills you need to acquire to be a successful lawyer.

- Mooting
Mooting is a must on the CV of any aspiring barrister, and for many aspiring solicitors. Mooting gives you the chance to test your advocacy skills in a safe but exciting environment, and the opportunity to hear other students argue and learn from the questioning of the judges.
The School of Law runs a mooting competition each year and enters its champion mooting team into the English Speaking Union/Essex Court Chambers National Mooting Competition. In 2012 the Oxford Brookes GDL Mooting Team won the national final of the English Speaking Union/Essex Court National Mooting Competition, and went on to win the Commonwealth Mooting Championship in Cape Town in April 2013.

- Client Interviewing
Client interviewing is one of the key skills which every lawyer needs. GDL students, coached by members of staff, have the opportunity to take part in an annual internal Client Interviewing Competition here at Oxford Brookes.

The winners of the internal competition go on to take part in the regional and national finals of the Client Interviewing Competition of England and Wales. The winning team from the national finals has the opportunity to go forward to the International Client Consultation Competition which is hosted internationally and which includes students from around the world.

In recent years Brookes GDL students have had great success in the National Client Interviewing Competition. They achieved third place in the National Final in both 2009 and 2011, and won the National Final in 2010, going on to be overall runners-up in the International Client Consultation Competition 2010 in Hong Kong. In 2012 the Brookes student team were overall runners-up in the national final and won the trophy for best GDL team.

- Pro Bono Activity
Pro Bono offers students a valuable introduction to the world of legal practice, and involvement in pro bono work helps to demonstrate to potential employers a student's commitment to the law.

Students wishing to be involved in pro bono work can do so through our established pro bono scheme, winner of the Solicitors Pro Bono group national award.

In 2010 and 2013, GDL students were shortlisted for the Attorney General's National Student Pro Bono Awards for 'Best Contribution by an Individual Student' and attended the awards ceremonies at the houses of parliament.

Many of our students come to the GDL having already obtained training contracts with solicitors’ firms, and their GDL studies are funded by these firms.

- Scholarships for barristers
Oxford Brookes GDL students going to the bar are exceptionally successful in securing much sought-after funding and scholarships. Each year a significant proportion of Brookes students gain prestigious scholarships through the Inns of Court.

A small number of our students use the legal knowledge and analytical skills gained through the GDL course to pursue a business, public sector or financial career, or continue on to further academic study.

Research highlights

There is a wide range of research interests among staff, with particular strengths in the areas of public law, international law and human rights, employment, religion and the law, criminal justice, and IT and the law. In the latest government research rating exercise, the 2014 REF, 85% of staff research output is internationally recognised.

Professor Peter Edge researches in the interaction of religion and law, and the law of small jurisdictions including International Finance Centres. Recent projects exploring these at the transnational level have included a study of foreign lawyers working in small jurisdictions, and a comparative study of the status of ministers of religion in employment law. Past PhD students have worked on projects such as a comparison of the European Convention on Human Rights and Shariah, and a comparative study of how criminal law treats religion.

Professor Lucy Vickers’ research into the religious discrimination at work has led to consultancy work for Equality and Human Rights Commission, as well invitations to speak at United Nations with the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion and Belief.

Sonia Morano-Foadi, interviewed and quoted in The Economist, secured £12,000 from the European Science Foundation to fund exploratory work into the effects of EU directives on migration and asylum.

Professor Ilona Cheyne has been invited to participate in the EU COST group on 'Fragmentation, Politicisation and Constitutionalisation of International Law', working on standards of review in international courts and tribunals.

This course is designed to develop the skills of practitioners who are able to respond and be proactive in the complex assessment and management of patients undergoing surgery in a variety of settings.

It promotes the development of expert perioperative practitioners with the ability to think critically utilising a relevant evidence base.

It also aims to promote a multi disciplinary/professional team (MDT/MP) approach to perioperative management, meeting the requirement of the Department of Health Practitioner Programmes.

Course overview:
The course is aimed at people who wish to develop their role within the surgical team, supporting the team in the delivery of high quality patient care.

As well as developing your ability to respond and be proactive in the complex assessment and management of patients undergoing surgery in a variety of settings, you will examine how to develop, enhance and improve the quality of perioperative management within the health care arena in order to provide improved care provision through the development of appropriate knowledge and skills.

One of the real strengths of this course is its flexibility. You can choose to study the whole Postgraduate Diploma or you can simply pick and choose the modules that suit your aspirations and those of your organisation.

Entry Requirements:
• You need to be a professionally registered health practitioner, with current registration as a health care professional
• You must also possess either a degree or equivalent level qualification, or provide evidence of relevant experience of working in perioperative management. (This will be assessed prior to or during interview).
AND
• You and your employer will have identified and obtained the full agreement of a Consultant Surgeon who will act as your clinical supervisor during the Course.

By the end of the course you will be able to:
• Identify and appraise current literature in relation to perioperative care management and identify the appropriate use of literature in relation to perioperative management.
• Identify and critically evaluate the diverse needs of the patient in the perioperative arena and the need to ensure appropriate channelling of resources, appreciating diversity in culture and lifestyle amongst patients in a variety of health care settings.
• Act innovatively in relation to perioperative services and to provide leadership in your specific area of practice.
• Deliver expert and creative approaches to perioperative management, educational enhancement and the development of strategies for evaluation and research in perioperative management.

The programme will be delivered over two academic semesters. Modules will be delivered sequentially, enabling you to link to and build upon existing and new knowledge.

This will start at the beginning of semester one and should be submitted within 18 months of commencing the programme. Practice placements will be organised and negotiated on a tripartite basis between the student supervisor and academic team in order to ensure that your experience will enable you to achieve the required learning outcomes.

It should be noted that you are likely to be taking on a new role. If you are undertaking this programme to gain the award of Postgraduate Diploma – Perioperative Specialist Practice you will be supernumerary for the duration of the programme.

Mode of delivery:

The 60 credits of the taught element will be delivered face-to-face, combining formal lecturing, seminars, and group work in addition to tutor-led practical classes. The remaining 120 credits for the research element will be available as distance learning either off or on-site. Irrespective of the location for conducting the research project, students will supported through monthly online (Skype)/or face-to-face supervisory meetings.

Course Structure

Students must complete 3 modules of 20 credits each and produce a 120 credits thesis on a research project aligned to one the College’s research theme. Each taught module of the programme requires a short period of attendance that is augmented by preparatory and reflective material supplied via the course website before and after attendance.

The Medicine and Life Sciences programme is designed in two phases:

Phase 1 – Training and Application (October – January; 60 credits)

Taught modules in Research Methods and their application to Medicine and Life Science. Personalised education and training relevant to student’s research interests. Identification of research questions and how they might be addressed.Focused on students existing knowledge and research skills.

Phase 2 – Research Project (February – September; 120 credits)

The project is selected by the student in combination with an academic supervisory team. Focussed on one of the College’s four main research themes: Biomarkers and Genes, Devices, Microbes and Immunity, and Patient & Population Health and Informatics. At the end of Part 2 students submit a 40,000 word thesis worth 120 credits leading to the award of Master of Research in Medicine and Life Science.

Attendance Pattern

Students are required to attend the University for 1 week (5 consecutive days) for each module in Phase One. Attendance during Phase Two is negotiated with the supervisor.

Learning and teaching methods

We offer a flexible portfolio of ACCA courses at our Newport City (part-time and full-time) and Cardiff (part-time only) campuses.

- ACCA at Atlantic House, Cardiff Campus:
ACCA tuition is now available at our Cardiff Campus for papers F7-F8 and Professional Level papers (excluding P4).

The course is delivered on an employer-friendly, afternoon-evening basis. Tuition occurs in weekly slots, with students attending one day per week. Tuition runs between September-December (for examinations in December) and January-June (for examinations in June). September-December deliveries also include additional whole days. Students can commence studies in either September or January.

Course delivery has been designed to offer an excellent platform to learn, with knowledge built up gradually and sustainably through exam question practice which is undertaken week-on-week. This mode of delivery also ensures that students are not required to be absent from their work place for long periods of time.

We deliver the curriculum of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (a world recognised professional body) teaching about hazard and risk in the topics of: housing and health, environmental protection and health, occupational health and safety, food safety and public health. On completing this course you will have a detailed understanding of risks and how to mitigate impacts using technical, scientific or legal interventions to create a safer and healthier environment.

In the second year, for one semester, you’ll undertake an internship, study in another country or join a research group. This valuable experience will enhance your employability and further develop your theoretical and practical skills.

Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time in one of the many companies/industries with which we have close links. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to find and secure a suitable position but ultimately we are in the hands of the employers who are free to decide who they take into their organisation.

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Geography and Environmental Studies Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Please note that this option may require you to obtain a visa for study in the other country.

Accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) the first 180 credits of this course course fulfils the academic requirement to gain recognition as an Environmental Health Practitioner. Full professional accreditation, opens up a broad range of career prospects in the public, private and voluntary sectors in the UK and abroad.

Teaching And Assessment

This course is focused upon the five core CIEH subject areas: food safety, housing, health and safety, environmental protection and public health.

Delivering an excellent postgraduate experience you will be offered the opportunity to question and reflect on how the world around us can impact on public health, whilst developing the skills and knowledge necessary to understand these risks and how to intervene and manage them effectively.

Teaching is delivered through a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops. You will also participate in debates, discussion and critiques of academic papers, field trips, case study scenarios and general discussions of academic and ethical issues.

Pre-term

Suitability

The MSc Psychology (conversion course) is designed for those wanting to pursue a career in psychology but who hold an undergraduate degree in a subject other than psychology or a non-accredited psychology degree (either combined or single honours). This conversion course will give you a good grounding in the core areas of psychology and confer eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society (BPS), which is a requirement for postgraduate training in psychology. This conversion course can also be used as a stepping stone to postgraduate research in psychology.

Content

Term 1 (September to December) covers core content in the different areas of psychology, as well as basic research methods content. Part-time students would complete these modules during the first leg of their degree. If you are enrolled on the full-time route, you'll also begin work on your research project with your supervisor, who will be an active researcher within the Psychology Team and assigned to you on the basis of common research interests.

Term 2 (January to March) covers more sophisticated research methods and students take two optional modules from a range of four, which tie in to the research themes in the psychology team and to various career paths. Part-time students would also complete these modules as part of leg 1. During this term, full-time students continue to work on their research project.

From April to August, if you are a full-time student you'll be working on your project and an extended essay. The project involves an empirical study, due in at the end of August. The extended critical essay is due in at the end of May and it involves a critical review of issues surrounding research (e.g. epistemology).

If you are a part-time student, you would re-join us at the beginning of the next academic year for leg 2 of your programme, to work on your projects and complete your extended essays.

Format

You will experience a variety of learning and teaching techniques, which will vary from module to module. These may include lectures, discussion-based sessions, workshops, hands-on research, as well as a substantial amount of self-directed study. For every hour of directed study, you are expected to put in around 5-6 hours of independent study. In total, you are expected to dedicate about 35-40 hours per week (including on-campus sessions) to your studies.

All staff involved in the delivery of the course are research-active academics. Some sessions may also involve and /or be led by practitioners and other relevant individuals (e.g., patient groups), to make sure your experience is as rich and well-rounded as we can possibly make it.

Assessment

Assessment is on an on­going basis, using a number of formats designed to tap into the different skills you are expected to develop during your time with us, including objective assessments, essays, portfolios, practical reports, presentations, podcasts and a final research project.

What can I do next?

This conversion course confers eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered membership of the BPS, which means you can go on to further post-graduate training in psychology. This applies to vocational / professional routes, such as Forensic, Clinical or Educational Psychology, or research-focused training (PhD).

This Doctorate in Medicine is for clinicians working in practice who would like to undertake a programme of individual research, under the principal supervision of a clinical specialist. It provides maximum flexibility and enables candidates to contribute to the final award using previous research.

The MD will provide the opportunity to study a wide range of subject areas relevant to clinical practice, these may involve clinically based research, laboratory based research or a combination of both. Candidates who have completed the MD programme will typically:

--- Who should enrol? ---
The MD is offered as a part time programme for Medical Consultants, General Practitioners, Specialist Registrars and other interested medical clinicians. The programme is designed to allow the thesis to be completed over a minimum of two years alongside any existing clinical commitment.

Candidates must provide evidence of personal, professional and educational experience that demonstrates an ability to meet the demands of and benefit from a programme of research training.

In additions candidates wishing to enrol for the award of MD shall satisfy the following criteria:

• Normally have obtained MBBS degrees (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery) or equivalent from a recognised institution.
• Hold or be eligible for full registration or hold limited registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or equivalent.
• Normally have three years relevant professional practice experience.
• Be in employment or have arranged employment for the period of research.


--- Resources ---
Whilst undertaking the programme candidates will have access to a variety of learning opportunities to meet their individual learning needs. This is provided by the generic research training programme. An individual programme of skills development and training will be negotiated with the candidate and supervisory team prior to registration.

Candidates will also have regular opportunities to network with peers via regular monitoring meetings and also via StudyNet, the University’s managed learning environment.


--- Supervision ----
Supervision is provided by a supervisory team made up of at least two supervisors, a university academic and a clinical supervisor. The team will have experience of supervision of at least 2 successful doctoral level studies.

Whilst undergoing the programme and in addition to ongoing supervision by the supervisory team, candidates will undergo periodic progress assessments and must provide evidence of progress of the programme of research, including details of achievements to date and future direction of the work, as well as discussing the approach taken and how the work is contributing to clinical practice.

The student-centred Advanced Practice in Health Care postgraduate programme is the only one in Wales to be accredited by the Royal College of Nursing. The Advanced Practice in Health Care programme enables experienced health care professionals from varied clinical backgrounds to develop their skills and knowledge to an advanced level of practice in health care. The MSSc and PGDip in Advanced Practice in Health Care has also been carefully mapped against the prospective Advanced Nurse Practitioner competencies of the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The clinical component of the Advanced Practice in Health Care programme is taught by a team of active practitioners consisting of: Advanced Nurse Practitioners, an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner and a Medical Doctor.

The Advanced Practice in Health Care programme is consistent with current thinking on advanced practice and complies with both the competencies provided by the Royal College of Nursing, 2012 (RCN) and their high standards of course delivery. Staff Expertise

The academic lead for the Advanced Practice in Health Care team works on a national basis with the Welsh Government on advanced practice policy.

Several members of the teaching team for the Advanced Health Care programme have published books and papers on the subject of Advanced Practice in health care.

Swansea was one of the first universities in the UK to offer nurse practitioner/advanced nurse practitioner education. We now have twenty years of experience of doing so. The programme is informed predominantly by the Advanced Practice Toolkit, the Royal College of Nursing document (RCN, 2012) and by working closely with our colleagues in the NHS.

Links with practice in health care

The practitioner teachers work within the local NHS and so provide a link. There is a formal link between the College of Human and Health Sciences and the Bridgend Rehabilitation Team. Based within the School of Communication, the programme is distinctive in its breadth, offering modules in core theoretical generative linguistics as well as modules in conversation and discourse analysis with special focus on the study of English. The programme team includes experts in the various areas of linguistic research with PhDs from top universities in the world. The members of the team are all actively involved in research on a variety of topics. Language acquisition and multilingualism are core overlapping research interests of the group as a whole. The team also benefits from links to research groups in other universities in the UK, Australia and the US and has established a series of research seminars which bring in speakers from the UK, Ireland and overseas.
