This means that our programmes are based on the reality of the classroom and the education system. This one year qualification will build your confidence in the classroom, your understanding of the wider role a teacher plays and provide you with all the subject knowledge to effectively teach your specialist subject to all age groups of secondary school children.
You will select a subject that you would like to specialise in and over the course of the year complete two modules in this subject. You will be introduced to a range of theories, practice, pedagogy, current research and literature relevant to that subject. All of your learning will ask you to reflect on your own experiences in your school placement with a consideration of current issues and research. These reflections will then allow you to review and adjust your teaching methods to improve your own practice.
You will undertake two blocks of school experience, two blocks of school experience, Foundation for 6 weeks in one school, and 12 weeks Development and Consolidation in another.

This degree will qualify you to teach a specialist subject across the secondary sector. Besides teaching and school responsibilities, a number of our graduates go on to management and leadership roles within schools and other education settings. Graduates also follow careers in consultancy, sector communications, publishing, training, charity, policy, advocacy, government, national assessment and curriculum development roles. Others go on to further academic study, for example our MA in Education.
The aim of the course is to prepare you to be a qualified citizenship teacher who is passionately committed to the subject and able to progress to teach it confidently, meaningfully and creatively to 11-18 year olds in both secondary school and college settings. Your teaching and support is shared between the university its partner schools across the Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Humberside region.
You access a programme of university based subject training days focused on teaching citizenship, and led by specialist experienced citizenship practitioners. These are spread over the year, but 'front-loaded' to prepare you for your teaching placements. Most subject sessions take place on a Friday. Additionally, a smaller number of days will be focused on the teaching of subjects in the humanities - RE, Geography, and History - which help broaden your skills and knowledge, and prepare you for a wider range of teaching in schools.
External inputs from national providers like the UK Parliament Education Service, the Holocaust Education Trust and Personal Finance Education Group, develop your awareness of wider opportunities, resources and support for creative teaching. We spend a full day exploring approaches to teaching outside the classroom at the Peoples’ History Museum in Manchester.
Subject sessions in the university, and access to the university’s library resources, offer the necessary support for when you go onto produce the two required academic assignments for the award of QTS. During the course you can choose to complete either the PGCE or the professional graduate certificate in education (ProfGCE). Both qualifications achieve QTS but the PGCE also gives you 60 masters level credits, which you can use towards a full masters degree (180 credits).
Subject sessions are also very practically based – introducing you to a variety of resources, ideas and teaching techniques appropriate to the citizenship classroom in Key Stages 3, 4 and post 16. Working with other trainees in the university setting provides opportunities to share and explore other teaching ideas and strategies throughout the year. As a subject group we build a shared bank of ideas and resources for teaching pupils of different ages and abilities, which can be trialled in the classroom on placement and stored for future use.
In the university sessions, we help you develop the knowledge and skills you need to be a successful teacher of citizenship, then with our partners in schools we support you in deploying these in practice in the classroom, building your confidence and professional autonomy.
School placements are central to the course. We have strong partnerships with secondary schools and colleges in the Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Humberside area. You complete two teaching placements, one in the autumn term between October and December and the second longer placement from January to June. During this time you are supported by a University-trained mentor in school, helping you develop your classroom pedagogy through advice on planning, regular classroom observation, and regular meetings to discuss progress and next steps.
The mentors also encourage and support wider thinking not just about the subject but the wider role of the teacher and about teacher professionalism. You engage in school-based training activities intended to complement the university-based programme, either alongside other trainees, NQTs or more experienced teachers to compliment this support.
School-based mentors also support you in completing a range of school-based tasks known as 'professional studies tasks', and an online tracking document known as the 'professional development portfolio' (PDP). By the end of the two placements you will be able to provide a range of evidence showing how you meet the qualified teacher status standards that are required by this course.
Your course tutor also visits you on both placements to observe you and discuss your progress, keeping in touch with your school-based mentor throughout.

We support your work in schools with a programme of preparation and support. You experience various school placements, including at least two continuous blocks of time on teaching practice. These are in two different schools and usually require some travelling within the region.
We have an excellent graduate employment record. Over 96% per cent of our PGCE graduates are teaching or in further study within six months of graduating.
Some graduates choose to continue with further study or find alternative employment in education-related fields.
that will enable you to pursue a career as a teacher in the further education and training sector, which is predominantly students aged 16 and above.
You can follow a full-time programme at the university, or train on a part-time basis at one of our partner colleges (Havant and South Downs College, Chichester College, St Vincent College campus and Eastleigh College). The full time route is intended for those not currently employed in a teaching role whereas the part time route is designed for teachers who currently work in further education and training sector. Both routes encourage you to develop subject-specific knowledge by working closely with your course teachers and work-based subject mentors.

On this course, you will develop your skills as a teacher through practical activity and the study of theories and contemporary issues within further education.
You will join fellow professionals from a range of subject backgrounds for lectures and seminars, creating an effective peer network where a variety of teaching practice can be shared. You will then gain work experience in a teaching placement.
For full time students the course is similar to a full time job as you will attend lectures and seminars at the university or be on placement days per week. While hours may vary slightly a student’s average hours of attendance are from 8.30am to 4.30pm. Placements are arranged by the university for all fulltime students.
On the part time route, you will attend one of our partner colleges once per week (see college’s website for details). You are expected to have secured your own teaching placement where you will teach at least 50 hours per year and have an identified subject mentor.

The PGCE is a professional teaching qualification which is recognised by further education providers in the UK. This means upon successful completion you may gain employment with a further education provider. In addition PGCE graduates may apply to the Society for Education & Training (SET) to gain QTLS.
Teaching Block 1 focuses on developing you as a teaching practitioner. This involves learning about teaching concepts and developing practical skills in planning and delivering lessons to a high standard, as well as assessing students. This will be delivered and assessed via the following two units:
Unit 1.1 Planning, Assessing and Evaluating Teaching and Learning Programmes: this unit encourages you to understand how to organise and plan your teaching and learning sessions and use different assessment methods, as well as start developing your own personal and professional skills.
Unit 1.2 Theories and Principles for Planning and Enabling Learning in a Specialist Subject Area: in this unit you will examine a range of teaching and learning theories, learn how to plan and develop inclusive learning into your lessons and understand how to use a range of communication and classroom management skills.
Teaching Block 2 is designed to enable you to establish a wider knowledge of the further education sector. You will research contemporary issues which are affecting further education as well as continuing to hone your teaching practice. This will be delivered and assessed via the following two units:
Unit 2.1 Professional Practice: this unit encourages you to review the development of your personal and professional skills, develop a career management file and research into a specific area of your teaching.
Unit 2.2 Curriculum Design in a Specialist Subject Area: in this unit you will learn about the range of contexts in which education and training are offered, analyse theories and models of curriculum design and understand how to promote equality within practice.
Teaching aims to demonstrate good practice and therefore employs a range of styles which include seminars, workshops, lectures and active group participation. Your time in class will develop your skills and knowledge to inform your own teaching practice and help to develop your own teaching style.
The emphasis throughout the course is on inclusive learning and teaching combined with reflective practice within a teacher’s own specialist subject area.
Each teaching block you will complete two units of study, with each unit comprising between 2 – 3 assignments. On the full-time pathway you will take both teaching blocks (four units of study) during the year. On the part-time pathway you will take one teaching block (two units of study) each year.
Each unit has varying approaches to assessment. Examples include research based essays, teaching practice files, lesson observations and logging personal development which will be supported by reflective accounts.
This programme will enable you to teach in further and higher education environments. It is also an eligible course for conversion to Qualified Teacher Status.
