Our Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) MA will provide you with a thorough introduction to current research, teaching theory, principles and practices in English language teaching. You will have the opportunity to observe actual language classes, plan and teach real lessons and carry out research on language learning and teaching.
Through our Master’s course you will learn sophisticated approaches to second-language pedagogy, second-language learning theories, linguistic analysis and research methods. This will give you a solid foundation of professional knowledge and expertise in preparation for a teaching placement and provide skills to continue your professional development. Our optional modules and dissertation module will allow you to connect this knowledge to specialist areas such as language assessment, the development of teaching materials and teaching English in a variety of contexts. You will also have the option of four weeks of supervised teaching practice through our collaboration with International House, the leading provider of the initial teacher training certificate. If you are successful in the placement you will gain an additional qualification through International House, either the Cambridge English CELTA or the IH Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

It will give you the basic research skills you need to investigate language learning, and to help you to develop your individual pedagogic style by reflecting on practice.
The programme provides students with a thorough introduction to current research, theory, principles and practices in English language teaching. It enables students to acquire a range of practical skills for teaching English as a second/foreign language, and prepares students to develop the capacity to engage independently and critically with current language teaching and research issues. It will provide students with basic research skills to investigate language learning, and help students to develop their individual pedagogic approaches by reflecting on practice.
We will teach you through lectures, teacher-led class discussions and group work, and you will typically have 40 hours of this for every 30-credit required module. We also expect you to undertake 260 hours of independent study per 30-credit required module. Contact hours for optional modules may vary slightly. During your dissertation we will provide you with seven hours of one-to-one contact with a supervisor and 20 hours of lectures on research skills to complement your 573 hours of independent study. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.
We will assess your performance on our required modules through essays, language analysis tasks, oral presentations and lesson planning tasks. We assess most of our optional modules through one 3,500-word essay per module, although assessment methods may vary depending on the optional modules you choose. You will also write a 15,000-word dissertation.

The MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at the University of Hertfordshire is a one year programme for graduates in English, with little or no teaching experience who want an initial preparation course in English Language Teaching at post-graduate level.
The programme gives an in-depth introduction to the teaching of English and provides a strong practical foundation for future development. A practical teaching element is a central feature of the programme; students will participate in practice teaching sessions throughout their study period. It is a twelve month full-time programme.

Graduates of the programme will be qualified for jobs teaching English at a range of levels in most countries of the world. They will be able to take on positions of responsibility at course design, and course management levels.
The programme content will be covered by lectures introducing the various topics. The lectures will be supplemented with workshops, out of class reading and seminar discussions. Practical tasks and assignments supported by relevant theory and discussion will also be used. Modules are typically assessed with a 4,000 word written assignments in which students are asked to explore a topic of their choice, review relevant literature and collect and analyse some data in a small-scale research project. This will help you gain a deeper understanding of an aspect of the teaching and learning process and suggest practical implications. For some modules, assessment will take the form of a design and evaluation of curriculum or teaching materials. There will be an early opportunity to submit a short piece of written work and receive constructive feedback from the tutor.
The dissertation is 15,000 words in length, and encourages students to explore an aspect of TEFL which is personally relevant to them and their teaching contexts. Designed for TESOL professionals, you will consider how to analyse and describe the English language for pedagogic purposes, and examine different approaches and principles to teaching the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.
You can also choose to specialise in certain aspects of TESOL: for example, teacher education, materials development, curriculum reform, the teaching of grammar and vocabulary, the use of ICT, or language assessment.
MEd TESOL follows the same syllabus as the MA TESOL programme, but asks you to apply a more practical, rather than theoretical, orientation to your final critical study. You will focus upon a professional issue within language education and apply ideas from your reading and a small-scale research study to find solutions to genuine English Language teaching problems.

MEd TESOL is a comprehensive programme that will allow you to develop both academically and professionally.
In semester one, you will deepen your understanding of teaching the English Language. You will focus on how people learn languages, how to describe and explain language to learners, and the approaches you can take to teaching reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
In semester two, you will expand your knowledge of more specialist areas. You will choose from a range of optional modules to suit your own interests and professional contexts: for example, the development of TESOL materials, teaching young learners, or language learning assessment. Alternatively, you could choose modules from another area of the School’s provision: for example, you may want to study digital learning, international educational management or theories of childhood and youth.
In the final part of the year, you will use your newly-acquired knowledge and skills to carry out a small-scale piece of research. Your critical study can be related to your own interests within the field of education. As a condition of the MEd programme, your study needs to have a practical focus and respond to a real-life professional issue in TESOL education.
To support your work on the project, you will take a non-assessed research methods course. Help with your academic writing is available throughout the year.
You will generally have around eight to ten hours of classes per week including seminars, tutorials and lectures. However, independent study is an important aspect of this programme, either alone or in a group, as it allows you to develop key research, analysis and communication skills and develop your own ideas.
We assess most of our modules through written assignments; you will be able to choose from a range of assignment topics. To help you prepare, you’ll be able to submit a draft to your tutor for comment beforehand.
Our students frequently find that new career opportunities open up for them, either in their home countries or in new international settings.
Some of our graduates have started work in teacher training, materials creation, or curriculum design. Others have started their own private language teaching business or moved from school to university teaching.
