If your first degree was in a specific area of law there is nothing preventing you from choosing another area of law completely or a complementary area. You could study environmental law areas such as oil and gas law, energy and environmental law, low carbon energy transition with further environmental regulation. If you are more interested in criminal law you could look at Criminology, the politics of human rights, humanitarian law.  If you are more interested in business you might choose international law, intellectual property law, world trade organisation or for business with a creative aspect you might think about specialist in cultural property issues or law for business and arts and museums law.  There are many possible mixes of these general areas of law you might want to explore. Employment possibilities are huge from this range of areas of law and include all notable areas to practise law and careers within the legal profession to welfare sectors such as employment, business, HR and finance.

Law careers

You may become a Barrister if you wish to represent people at High Court and Magistrates court to put legal argument forward for decision. You could start off as a legal executive to later qualify as a solicitor with further training or after a number of years experience you may wish to become a judge. If you want some work experience you could become a court usher. Other careers include a Paralegal. This role undertakes much of a lawyers role in drafting documents, meetings and contracts.  If you decide your law degree is useful for other areas you may look at Civil Service careers, become a politician, work in the police, city, or teach.

Reliability Engineering & Asset Management offers a flexible approach to learning as follows:

Full-time in attendanceDirect Taught )

Students undertake eight units. Each taught unit lasts one week and is followed by time for coursework and revision for examinations. Students start work immediately on their project and the programme is completed in one year.

Part time in attendanceDirect Taught )

Students undertake eight units. Each taught unit lasts one week and is followed by time for coursework and revision for examinations. Students start work on their project in the final year and this option is completed in three years.

Part time by Distance Learning

Students undertake eight units, all in distance learning format, each of about three months duration. Teaching will begin with a short introduction allowing students to acclimatise to the Virtual Learning Environment, Blackboard 9. The programme is complete after three years. Students undertake their project in the final year. 

Teaching and learning

The coherent atmosphere in the classroom is to maintain high standards and quality and as such places are limited. Our teaching methods are similar to knowledge transfer concepts as well as case studies without involving much mathematical theories.

Teaching style

Direct Taught - Full and Part time

Each course unit runs for an intensive week-long period and tuition takes place at the University.

Distance Learning

For part-time Distance Learning students, the entire course is delivered via Blackboard, an online virtual learning environment. Two course units per semester are undertaken on-line accessing web-based teaching material which will include text, images, video and animation in parallel, over a three month period. Most importantly web-based teaching generates an interactive environment with real, active communication between students and staff and between groups of students throughout the programme. Distance Learning students will need to visit the University for a 2-day residential per semester for face-to-face discussion with their Unit leader .

Coursework and assessment

Each taught unit of the programme is followed by an assignment which is applied in the work place for part-time students or at the university for full-time students plus an examination either at the University or at higher education institute or British Council in the student's home country.

Assessment is by written examination and assignment. The assignment, which follows the taught element of the unit, accounts for 50% of the total marks, the examination 35% and an in-unit assignment the remaining 15%.

Semester 1 - 2nd and 3rd week of January

Semester 2 - 2nd and 3rd week of May

Dissertation Project

The dissertation project is intended to address a real issue in Reliability Engineering and Asset Management and is studied in depth, relating problems in the field to theory, case studies and solution reported in the literature, and often creating innovative proposals and field trials. All students have access to laboratory resources where appropriate.

Course unit details

REAM is a modular programme which consists of eight units, some of which include field and lab work followed by a major project. The earlier units address the management of the maintenance process, including such topics as asset management and maintenance strategy; asset maintenance systems and condition monitoring. Later more specialised units deal with auditing, advanced vibration monitoring, reliability and risk. Units on the full time programme are direct taught, however, part time students can choose either direct taught or web-based distance learning.

A professional doctorate that enables eye care professionals to enhance their knowledge, critical awareness of current issues, and to be at the forefront of their academic discipline through taught and research elements.

Course outline

The Doctor of Optometry/ Doctor of Ophthalmic Science (previously known as the Aston “Ophthalmic Doctorate”) is a unique qualification - a professional doctorate - that enables eye care professionals to enhance their knowledge, and critical awareness of current issues, and to be at the forefront of their academic discipline through taught and research elements.

Taught modules are 20 credits each, nominally equivalent to 200 hours of student learning. Modules consist of remote access lectures with electronic formative assessments and a module coursework assignment such as reflective case records, or an essay/literature review related to the module. There are two study periods per year to complete taught modules; 1st October -31st January and 1st March - 30th June. Module results are ratified at Examination Boards held shortly after the end of each study period.

The research project is the major component of the doctorate, supervised by members of the Optometry Subject Group academic staff. Students will develop their research proposals based upon their own clinical interests, or may opt to select a project nominated by an Aston academic. Because this is a distance-learning programme, the research is not normally carried out on the University campus, and it is essential that the student has access to the facilities and resources needed to carry out the research, usually in the student's place of work.

The research stage requires a significant long-term commitment, as it is equivalent to around 2 years of full-time work (i.e. 4 years part-time). Candidates ultimately submit a thesis which is examined in a viva voce examination.

The Doctor of Optometry programme is aimed at practising optometrists, who will complete case records where required for taught module coursework, and will undertake a practice- based research project. The Doctor of Ophthalmic Science programme is for eye care professionals who may not be practising optometrists, e.g. medics/ orthoptists/ product designers; these students may complete scientific essays to fulfil the coursework requirements, and undertake a non-clinical research project.

This degree is only available as part-time distance learning, so it is vital that the student has access to a good broadband internet connection.

Flexible credit accumulation

New students initially register as LHS postgraduate students within a framework of flexible credit accumulation (FCA). Within this framework it is possible to graduate with a Postgraduate Certificate in Optometry (60 taught credits); Postgraduate Diploma in Optometry (120 taught credits); M.Sc. in Optometry/ Ophthalmic Science (180 credits: 120 taught, 60 dissertation) or the Doctor of Optometry (DOptom)/ Doctor of Ophthalmic Science (DOphSc).

As part of the flexible programme, UK optometrists may complete the theoretical element of the GOC-approved Independent Prescribing for Optometrists. Further information is available here: http://www1.aston.ac.uk/lhs/cpd/courses/optometry/independent-prescribing-for-optometrists/

The MSc requires the completion of 6 taught modules (120 credits) and a 60 credit narrative research review (dissertation).

Completion of the DOptom/ DOphSc requires 180 taught module credits and successful completion of a substantial personal research project, with submission of a thesis/ portfolio of work and a viva voce examination with an internal and external examiner. Up to 60 credits may be awarded in respect of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), whether experiential or certificated (e.g. previous completion of the Aston MOptom). To progress to full doctoral registration requires a minimum of 120 taught module credits including the compulsory 20 credit Research Methods module, an approved project proposal, and successful completion of the qualifying report stage, assessed by viva voce examination with an internal examiner. The report and the viva voce examination will be used to assess suitability for progression to the full doctoral project.

Timescales for study

Taught credits are valid for 5 years, so students studying for an MSc/PG Diploma/PG Certificate must complete their studies within 5 years of enrolment on the programme.

Students undertaking the DOptom/DOphSc. programme must complete their taught module requirement and complete the research stage within 6 years of registration. Note that in accordance with University Regulations for part-time research students, the earliest date for completion of the doctoral programme (i.e. submission of thesis/ portfolio) is 4 years following registration.

Learning, teaching & assessment

For taught modules, online lectures, available on our virtual environment whenever you chose to view them are accompanied by short tests throughout the module. Each module includes a substantial piece of coursework, e.g. a scientific literature review or portfolio of case records. The pass mark for all forms of taught module assessment is 50%.

For the main element of the doctorate, the research project, candidates submit a report and undergo a qualifying report stage within one year of becoming research active. Once this stage has been passed, candidates continue their research, culminating in the submission of a thesis (up to 80, 000 words) which is examined in a viva examination by experts in the chosen field. The degree of Doctor of Optometry or Doctor of Ophthalmic Science is awarded to candidates who successfully defend their thesis.

It provides you with the knowledge to review reliability of engineering facilities, materials and products and legislative framework at the same time. Safety has always been of paramount concern in the oil and gas industry with a lot of learning and knowledge acquired since the oil industry growth of the 1970s. Ageing infrastructure from the golden days of the oil and gas and energy industry is now being identified for decommissioning. Some of it is in the North Sea but many other countries are increasingly realising that they need to decommission properly and effectively due to environmental regulation. Building a platform has provided a rapid and continuous learning process since the start of the energy industry but learning how to decommission a platform has now started a rapid learning experience about best practise methods across the supply chain and facilities available to deal with entire platforms and their various facilities are now an important concern.

The degree will cover all aspects of decommissioning process including engineering, legal, environmental regulation, business and project management risks and challenges across the oil and gas industry, You study the important aspects of offshore subsea systems, well plugging, offshore installations, project evaluating and economics, environment impact assessment process an regulation, and a group project in comparative assessment. You also look at process shutdown and disposal.  This is a highly complex area due to the level of environmental contaminants and different types of facilities to take down.

This course leads to graduate membership of ICSA , the international membership and qualifying body for chartered secretaries and other governance professionals. The course has been developed in close collaboration with the Institute and is fully accredited by them.

Due to its success rate for graduate recruitment and links with employers, this course was awarded the PostGrad Ireland Postgraduate Course of the Year – Business in 2012. Graduates from the course go on to work for organisations such as Deloitte, KPMG, Eversheds, Citi and PWC. Such is the demand for students who are qualified in management and corporate governance over the past few years that over 90% of successful students have gained graduate level jobs.

Course content is structured to ensure that students gain essential, current knowledge and skills in a range of subject areas as well as meeting the professional requirements of ICSA. Jordanstown Campus

The full-time MSc Management and Corporate Governance course is usually taught on two days a week, with lectures taking place during the afternoon and evening. As well as weekly lectures some subjects are taught on a "block" basis - meaning that the modules are taught over three days; one module in each of semesters 1 and 2 is taught in this way.

The part-time MSc Management and Corporate Governance course is usually taught over 2 years. In semesters 1 and 2 the lectures take place during the afternoon and evening of one day per week. As well as these weekly lectures, three modules are taught on a "block" basis - meaning that the modules are taught over three days.

Students completing the Master's qualification will be required to take three modules in semester 3, these are usually taught on a 3 day "block" basis between May and July.

Marino Institute, Dublin

Students study the course over a 2 - 3 year period. Students begin by working towards the Postgraduate Diploma from Ulster University which includes GradICSA. This is taught in Dublin at the Marino Institute. Students then have the option to continue on to the Master's part of the course.

Modules are taught over 4 days. Some modules are taught over 2 consecutive Fridays and Saturdays, others are delivered over 3 weekdays with a follow up day later on in the month. Sample timetables are available by emailing .
