The industry -

The UK health and fitness industry is experiencing continued growth. Fitness membership in the UK has risen by 4.5% and now exceeds 8 million (2014 State of the UK Fitness Industry Report). Despite this, industry commentators have urged the sector not to become complacent and to continue to promote a healthy lifestyle to the nation.

This course can help graduates tap into a number of good career opportunities in sport and exercise science across a number of specialist fields, from developing programmes for elite athletes to working with schools and colleges to encourage the next generation of athletes to excel.

The programme -

Built on a successful and popular undergraduate programme, this high-level master’s degree helps to prepare students for a career in the sports industry by delivering hands-on professional skills and adopting an interdisciplinary approach to coaching.

During the course, students will explore key areas such as talent identification, long-term athlete development, performance analysis, strength and conditioning, peak performance, technical and tactical development, marginal gains, and injury prevention and management.

To complement their studies, students are expected to undertake work placements relevant to the course within professional sport and exercise organisations. Working at all levels, from elite athletes to schools or rehabilitation patients, students will gain valuable ‘real-world’ experience working alongside leading experts. Work placements are expected to have been organised prior to joining the course; if students have been unable to organise a placement, the University will support them in finding a suitable opportunity.

Students have full access to the University’s leading, fully-equipped sports science facilities, which boast a BASES-accredited physiology laboratory, as well as biomechanics, health and exercise, and psychology laboratories. Many of these facilities are regularly used by professional athletes, including players from Southampton FC.

Past students have benefitted from a guest speaker programme which has featured lectures from professionals from the highest level of a variety of sports, who have shared their advice, knowledge and experience of the industry.

The course team has strong industry links and the University is a partner of Southampton FC. The University also works with other top sports organisations, including Reed’s High Performance Academy, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Crystal Palace FC, London Irish RFC and GB Wheelchair Rugby.

Course Content

Technical Development in Sport: On this unit you will critically analyse coaching methods and how skill is acquired, building your understanding and use of technology for developing, monitoring and testing athletic performance.

Psycho-Social Development in Sport: The aim of this unit is to analyse the theories underpinning talent identification and long-term athlete development, and to examine the psycho-social factors affecting performance throughout an athlete’s career.

Physical Preparation in Sport and Exercise: This unit examines the science behind effective training, injury prevention and rehabilitation in a practical setting. You will focus on physical and mental loading, and on the key fitness components of strength, speed, endurance and flexibility.

Tactical Development in Sport: This unit focuses on performance analysis techniques, providing practical opportunities to collect, assimilate and analyse tactical, technical and time motion information, with the aim of improving performance.

Marginal Gains for Peak Performance: This unit identifies past, current and future methods of obtaining potential marginal advantage in performance, with a chance to build first-hand experience via off-site learning.

Individual Project: The project provides an opportunity to undertake a sustained, intensive and independent investigation into a topic of your choosing, presenting your work in a peer-reviewed journal format.

Teaching, learning and assessment -

The course combines theory-led sessions with practical sessions, working individually and in groups in both the laboratory and the field. On all units you’ll work with real-life clients, in a placement either organised yourself or by members of the course team.

Work experience -

Prior to starting the course you’ll be expected to have a placement organised that will last throughout your studies; this can be in more than one organisation if required. The placement should be in a role relevant to the course, and might include (but not limited to) coach, sport scientist, performance analyst, strength and conditioning coach, exercise physiologist, biomechanist, laboratory technician, etc.

If you’ve been unable to organise a placement, the course team will support you in finding a placement, potentially with university partners Southampton FC or a range of other top sports organisations, including Reed’s High Performance Academy, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Crystal Palace FC, London Irish RFC, GB Wheelchair Rugby and more.

Assessment -

Assessment will be a range of written coursework, viva, presentations, reports and practical tests.

Assessment

As a student of this programme, you will acquire an advanced understanding of issues in the field of sport sciences, both applied and fundamental. The MSc in Sports Performance is an innovative course designed to meet the needs of students who are interested in maximising sports performance. The course is designed to provide the necessary theoretical and practical skills for those who wish to work within the sport and exercise industry as a Strength and Conditioning Coach, applied sport scientist or a technical coach. It will allow you to be capable of training, test and coach performers to maximise their physical potential to help improve their sporting ability.

Career Management Skills

This Masters degree aims to provide an understanding of real life applications of theory. You will encounter a range of examples of the application of enhancing athletic performance relevant to a future career in the sport and exercise industry or in a profession where such knowledge and skills acquired during the degree would be useful. Throughout the course you will have lectures and workshops given by the Centre for Personal and Career Development.

An initial session on career options is offered by the team from the Centre for Personal and Career Development through your induction process. Professional competencies are embedded throughout this course. Experiential learning will be promoted through case study and practical assessments of your competency, while work experience and placement opportunities are available both extra to the course and as part of formal learning in a Work Experience unit. Students are encouraged to develop a critical appreciation of the changing demands in their field and, in doing so, they become equipped with the skills to deal with any challenges that these changes may present.

As part of the course, students are afforded the opportunity to reflect on and engage in debate about the issues and developments within their professional context. This responsive approach to professional development encourages students to explore issues as they emerge.

The course is flexible by its nature, but it lies within a solid framework. Your supervised projects will focus on areas which are relevant to you, and each has its own qualification outcome. At each stage, you will work within a carefully constructed template which provides clear guidance on structure, content and the research process.

1st Year - PG Cert - Conceptual and Theorectical Discourses
Consideration of debates and developments that constitute the terms of reference within the sport and health science environment. For example, debates relating to long term athlete development, exercise referral clinics, healthy lifestyle management, strength and conditioning, physical activity and public health policy, preparing for competition in a variety of climates, talent identification and the application of development theories to the specific disciplines within sport and health science.

2nd Year - PG Dip - Contemporary Contextual Issues.
Concern with the issuesthat define the contemporary parameters of sport and health work. For example, ways in which the public policy frame, and professionalism, informs the characteristics and priorities of sport and health science programmes and initiatives within, and across, National Governing Bodies and accrediting organisations. This will include exploring the development and implementation of policy, the role of stakeholders, professionalism, lifestyle management and evaluation in the policy process.

3rd Year - MA Masters Project - Developmental Considerations
The focus would be on a research project through primary data collection. For example direct engagement in some aspect of sport and health science leading to individual or team performance improvement, the evaluation, impact and effectiveness of exercise referral clinics on specific populations, the implementation of innovative training methods or a mono, multi- or interdisciplinary approach to athlete support.

This course is led by Lance Doggart, a sport and health sciences teacher with a particular interest in sport science support and research methods. Lance brings an extensive background in sports coaching and interdisciplinary sport science to the course.

More Information

Delivery
Delivery of the programme is based on the allocation of a project supervisor for each stage. This supervisor will have expertise in the chosen area and will provide guidance throughout the process. Where appropriate, a second supervisor will also be involved. In addition to project supervision, research workshops will be offered during the course of the year, when students will be brought together to explore particular research themes. Electronic resources will be available to support each stage and additional tutorial support will be made available as appropriate. It is anticipated that one of the projects undertaken will lead to a joint publication (supervisor and student).

Program

The International MBA is a 1-year full-time program. The curriculum lays a strong foundation of theoretical knowledge, which participants will learn to apply in various practical contexts.

Throughout the IMBA, the faculty adopts a thorough and practical approach using cases and real-life examples to apply concepts to solve business issues.

Participants are required to work on cases and/or group projects for each course. Faculty members foster interactions in the classroom – participants learn from each other’s experiences and are trained to develop and defend their opinions.

IMBA Curriculum -

There are two semesters of course work. An internship, thesis, or consulting project finish the program.

Professional Development Support

The IMBA program provides participants with the tools to develop your skills, knowledge, and expertise for their next professional challenge. Alongside their peers they will receive guidance through small-group workshops and interactions with corporate professionals. On a personal level, accredited coaches and tutors will support them throughout, using a program developed to meet their specific needs. Coaches will use proven tools and techniques to prepare participants, not only for their next position, but for their entire career.

The IÉSEG Talent Program is available to support IMBA candidates as they prepare for the post-MBA recruitment process. Professionals from various firms in talent-acquisition will discuss their work, their recruitment processes, and the type of profile that gets noticed. Next, professionals will give workshops to help participants prepare the first steps in the recruitment process: identification of skills and experience, refinement of their 'elevator pitch', an explanation of networking options, preparation for tests and assessments, and a review of cover letters and CVs in both French and English. One-to-one mock interviews and training sessions will provide practice for participants for recruitment sessions in March. The Talent Program team will support IMBA participants throughout the year to ensure they maximize the impact of their unique talents and skills in the recruitment process.

Admission requirements -

IMBA program is open to candidates with an undergraduate degree in any discipline from a recognized university and with a good command of English: IELTS (6.5), TOEFL (85 IBT), TOEIC (795).

Native English speakers or students whose Bachelor degree was taught in English may be exempt from the above. A minimum of 3 years of full-time work experience is required.

Application process -

Admission is via an online application at https://application.ieseg.fr and the review of the supporting documents. Qualified students will be contacted for an interview. Rolling admission is offered to selected students from October 2016.

The dissertation involves the identification and refinement of an HR problem, undertaking an in-depth literature review, the collection of primary data, and the analysis and evaluation of this data so as to produce a set of implementable and/or secondary recommendations.

Students studying for the MSc HRM and PgDip HRM will be required to complete the 4 core units in your first year. In your second year you will take Research Methods plus one core unit and two electives. Each year of the programme features a residential weekend as an integral part of the overall course.
