This course is one of the most well-established of its kind in the UK, having evolved from the very successful MSc course in Machine Tool Technology, and is regularly updated in line with subject developments and changing industrial practices. Advanced Manufacturing Technology and Systems Management has developed into a broad based multi-disciplinary field, demanding expertise in many diverse topics. The structure of the course reflects this by requiring in-depth study of a number of topics ranging from the fundamentals of manufacturing processes to the management of manufacturing systems. More specialised study takes place during the dissertation project where students undertake individual research projects of industrial relevance. The MSc course has a strong practical orientation and it aims to produce engineers with the theoretical and practical experience which will enable them to analyse and investigate problems and to engage in design, development and research involving manufacturing technology. The course also prepares graduates for the management of manufacturing systems. Whilst the course is intended primarily for those wishing to pursue an industrial career, it is equally relevant as preparation for research in advanced manufacturing technology and systems management.

Teaching and learning

The Advanced Manufacturing Technology and Systems Management MSc is a full time course which is studied over 12 months and there is one start date each year in September.

Throughout the course you will develop advanced technical skills in both manufacturing technology and systems management, as well as soft skill such as team working, presenting and report writing, all of which will enable you to pursue a career in both general and specialised engineering industries or develop an in-depth knowledge for a career in research in industry or academia.
During the course you will visit a number of companies, such as Airbus and Jaguar Land Rover, and have the opportunity to attend industrial guest lectures, which will not only further enhance your understanding of manufacturing but also to give you an insight into the practical application of many of the subject areas you will be studying. Moreover, many of the dissertation projects, one of which you will be working on as part of this course, originate from and are run in collaboration with industry.

Our teaching philosophy revolves around you both ‘learning by doing’ and also transferring acquired knowledge to others. Activities will be conducted both individually and in teams, with tutors providing leadership and mentoring aimed at supporting your transition into independent learners. You will study several key topics and complete a four-month individual project in which you apply your knowledge to a significant, in-depth piece of analysis or design. Projects are tailored to your individual interests and may take place in our own laboratories or, by agreement, in industry. Experts from Industry (STS Nuclear) deliver part of the course as visiting lecturers, bringing professional expertise and industry-relevant material to the programme.

Here are the units you will study:

Power Systems Technology: This unit provides an in-depth overview of contemporary electrical power systems. It covers the elements of electrical power systems including generation, transmission and distribution in the mixed energy source paradigm.

Electrical Machines and drives: Provides an in-depth overview of the operational principles and physical design of DC and AC electrical machines as well as broad understanding of concepts of power electronics and power electronic converters, so that you can describe their application and selection criteria. You will develop an understanding of the issues present in converter design, including the impact of physical layout and heat dissipation.

Energy Systems: Focuses on the techniques and principles of operation of thermodynamics and combustion systems, as well as the provision and management of energy. It also focuses on power generation and combined systems, BioMass processers application of heat and fluid transfer.

Renewable and Alternative Energy: Provides an in-depth coverage of the principles of renewable and alternative energy systems: Winds, Solar, BioMass, Geothermal, Fuel Cells, Hydrogen Technologies and Nuclear Energy.

Nuclear Technology: A study of nuclear engineering including the theory of atomic and nuclear physics, methods and benefits of generating electricity from nuclear power plants, and the effects of ionising radiation. The nuclear fuel cycle and the associated environmental impacts are also considered. The development of international guidance on nuclear and radiological safety and a comparison of national regulatory structures are analysed. The importance of safety cultures, safety behaviours and safety cases is a key element throughout this module.

Energy Management: The unit is specifically designed to provide the students with the basic of economical analysis and evaluation of energy projects and asset management as well as risk and hazard assessment, comprising legislation, hazard identification and quantification, quantified risk analyses, methods of elimination/mitigation, economic appraisal of integrated renewable, and petroleum projects; with numerous pertinent case studies.

Programme Assessment

You will be taught through a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials (personal and academic), laboratory sessions and project work. The course has a strong practical emphasis and you will spend a significant amount of time in our Energy, Power systems and Electronic laboratories.

On this Information Systems Management course, you will undertake four 30 credit units and one 60 credit project unit.

Your course takes place over three semesters. Depending upon when you join the course, this will determine the order of units which you will study. You will benefit by beginning your studies with others who started at one of the earlier points of entry.

This Master's course provides the opportunity to undertake different types of project, a "Capstone" experience which completes the integration of your studies applied in one of the following:

• Professional Practice - the central aim of this unit is to provide you with a thorough understanding of the commercial context in which organisations operate. By reflecting upon your existing knowledge and experience you will be required to respond to a number of work-based scenarios through critical evaluation to determine an appropriate course of action.

• The Live Project - this will enable you to work as part of a team on a project provided by a business organisation. The exact nature of the level of work, and nature of responsibility will depend upon the chosen organisation. However, there will be close negotiation between the company and the Business School.

• The dissertation - this is a conventional dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words, enabling you to undertake in-depth research of a topic relating to your course. It will consist of research question, aims and objectives, rationale for undertaking the study, literature review, research methodology, analysis of findings, conclusions and recommendations.

Assessment

In line with the Business School’s commitment to practice-based education, a large part of the assessment will relate to the demonstration of your ability to understand Information Systems Management in practice.

This broad-ranging course concentrates on the latest tools, techniques and practices of information systems management. Covering object-orientated programming, computer systems and networking, advanced database design, web systems, technology change management and integration, an much more, the course exposes you to the most recent developments in both the theory and the practice of modern information systems.

The Computing MSc, Information Systems Management MSc, Information Systems Management MSc and Information Technology MSc are very closely linked with a common first semester, giving you the option of changing between these courses before the Christmas vacation.

Optional placement
We offer a great opportunity to boost your career prospects through an optional one year placement as part of your postgraduate studies. We have a dedicated Placement Unit which will help you obtain this. Once on your placement you will be supported by your Visiting Tutor to ensure that you gain maximum benefit from the experience. Placements begin after the taught component of the course has been completed - usually around June - and last for one year. When you return from your work placement you will begin your project.

Teaching and assessment

The course can be studied either full-time over one year or part-time for two–six years, beginning in September each year (a January start date may also be available).

There will be two- or three-week vacations at Christmas and New Year (December/January) and Easter (March/April), and some students also take a brief break in June or July before completing their dissertation.

Teaching will include formal lectures, tutorials and laboratories. You will also be expected to undertake independent study and research to support your assignments and dissertation. Assessment will be by various group and individual methods including exams, projects, presentations, written essays and reports.

You will normally be expected to attend a two-week induction in September, to prepare you for modules taught in semester one.

Contact and learning hours

Full-time students will normally attend around 12 hours of timetabled taught sessions per week, and can expect to undertake around 24 further hours of self-directed independent study and research to support your assignments and dissertation

This course is primarily concerned with preparing graduates to be able to effectively manage and lead the development of major information systems and/or e-Business systems resources. The subjects studied in the programme are based on the large body of up-to-date research and practitioner knowledge and experience of the staff in the School.

The curriculum includes the study of traditional and contemporary approaches to information systems and knowledge management in the business context; PRINCE2 project management; security systems management; business agility / creativity including the management of change, e-Business systems development and deployment, research methods and consultancy skills practice.

On completion of the course students should be able to demonstrate effective communication at a level appropriate to the audience, develop internet search skills, learn independently via a diverse range of resources, exercise initiative and personal responsibility and criticise and evaluate their own learning experiences. In addition, they will have developed sound knowledge and experience of PRINCE2 Project Management, which will be an attractive competency to many organisations.

Information Systems (IS) as a discipline is a combination of IT systems, business analysis, organisational and management theory, psychology and sociology that have found their home in IS. This is largely because these diverse areas are required now in increasingly complex organisational environments.

An organisation's critical work systems are linked to the Information Systems that supports them. In the context of this course we assume the term ‘information system' involves computer technology. However, the course places more emphasis on the human and organisational aspects of IS than on the computer systems that may form part of them.

This course has been developed to deliver the higher level, essential skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a role managing large-scale information systems. Academic facilities

Students in City's Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering benefit from a recent lab equipment upgrade worth £130,000. This includes photovoltaic trainers, three phase synchronous machines, AC motor speed control machines, single and three phase transformers, thryistor controllers, a power systems mainframe and power systems virtual instrumentation.

The equipment is essential in training students to be highly skilled professionals in the energy industry.

The photovoltaic trainer, for instance, is a desk-top instrument which teaches the fundamental principles of photovoltaic energy. The 'photovoltaic effect' is a method of energy generation which converts solar radiation into an electrical current using semiconductors arranged into solar cells.

Teaching and learning

Modules are delivered by academics actively involved in energy related research, as well as visiting lecturers from the power industry who provide a valuable insight into the operation of energy companies.

Industry professionals give several seminars throughout the year. At least two industrial trips are organised per academic year.

The modules for this course are delivered over two semesters, with weekly lessons scheduled over two days a week. The third semester is spent completing a project that involves writing a dissertation and presenting findings. This course is organised into eight modules provided on a weekly basis.

Work placement scheme

Kingston University has set up a scheme that allows postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing to include a work placement element in their course starting from September 2017. The placement scheme is available for both international and home/EU students.

-The work placement, up to 12 months; is optional.
-The work placement takes place after postgraduate students have successfully completed the taught portion of their degree.
-The responsibility for finding the placement is with the student. We cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it.
-As the work placement is an assessed part of the course for international students, this is covered by a student's tier 4 visa.
