The master of science in manufacturing and mechanical systems integration is a multidisciplinary degree designed for individuals who wish to achieve competence in mechanical or manufacturing engineering through an applied course of study. Highlights of the program include foundation courses in engineering, business practices, and management functions found in many manufacturing enterprises. Students select an area of concentrated study, and a thesis, capstone, or comprehensive exam. Concentrations consisting of a three-course sequence are available in product design, automation, quality, or electronics manufacturing.

The program is offered by the department of manufacturing and mechanical engineering technology in collaboration with the Saunders College of Business and the industrial and systems engineering department and the Center for Quality and Applied Statistics within the Kate Gleason College of Engineering.

Plan of study

The program consists of 36 semester credit hours and is comprised of core courses, a concentration, electives, and a capstone project, thesis, or comprehensive exam. Students may be required to take additional prerequisite courses depending on their background and the concentration they select. The graduate director may approve the waiver of courses in the prerequisite group from graduation requirements, depending on a students’ academic and employment background. Full-time students are eligible for two co-op blocks (three months for each block) after completing two semesters of study.

- Electives

Students in the thesis option must complete one elective. Students in the capstone project option must complete two electives. Students choosing the comprehensive examination option must complete three electives. Courses selected to fulfill elective requirements must be any course from another MMET program concentration, any course outside the concentration or a graduate course from another graduate program (if approved by the graduate director and faculty member teaching the course), or any independent study course if approved by the student’s program director.

Admission requirements

To be considered for admission to the MS program in manufacturing and mechanical systems integration, candidates must fulfill the following requirements:

- Hold a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) from an accredited institution in the field of engineering, engineering technology, or computing. Students with degrees in other disciplines will be considered on an individual basis.

- Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Applicants with a lower GPA will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and may be admitted on a probationary basis. These students will have to secure a B or better average in the first three graduate courses to be considered for full admission.

- Have completed college level course work in computer programming and probability and statistics.

- Submit two professional recommendations.

- Submit official transcripts (in English) of all previously completed undergraduate and graduate course work.

- Submit a clearly written, one-page statement of purpose.

- Complete a graduate application.

- International applicants whose native language is not English must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or 79-80 (Internet-based) is required. International applicants must also submit scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). A score of 1,200 (V&Q) and an analytical writing score of 3.5 or higher are required. Applicants with low GRE scores may be admitted conditionally; but may be required to take additional English language tests and, if required, English language courses along with a reduced program course load.

Railway businesses rely on advanced technical and operational systems to carry vast numbers of passengers in densely populated areas and large quantities of goods over long distances. The Master of Research (MRes) programme in Railway Systems Integration prepares postgraduates for careers in research and development (R&D) in railway businesses and companies supplying railways with advanced technical and operational systems. The programme can also serve as a stepping stone to doctoral studies by developing candidates’ analytical skills and research know-how.

The MRes offers a unique opportunity for students to undertake a research-based Masters degree together with technical study in a relevant railway systems or engineering subject. Students benefit from participating in both the fundamental and applied research carried out within the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education, and from the world-leading educational programmes offered by the Centre. The programme comprises 3 classroom taught technology oriented modules and a research skills module that consists of three main elements, namely, reviewing literature, analysing data and modelling the behaviour of technical systems. Two thirds of the period of study are devoted to independent research that is documented in a substantial thesis. Part-time students follow the same syllabus as full-time students but complete the taught modules and the thesis in a sequence that best suits their work commitments.

ERP Systems Theory and Practice

Examines the rationale, theories and practices around Enterprise Resource Planning systems (ERP) and develops the knowledge required to understand the forces driving ERP design and implementation. Example topics of study include enterprise systems strategy and rationale, issues of organisational implementation and business services, processes and functions from an ERP perspective. The module provides an introduction to the SAP R/3 environment and the practice of business process integration in that environment.

ERP Systems Deployment and Configuration

Examines the implications of implementing ERP systems in organisations and develops the key skills necessary to deploy and configure ERP systems. Example topics of study include business process improvement alongside enterprise systems configuration and configuration management (including Master Data Management, business services, processes and functions). The module examines practical aspects of configuration in the context of the SAP R/3 environment.

Service-oriented Architecture

Examines the organisational impact of service-oriented approaches and the technologies necessary for the successful implementation of enterprise and web services. Example topics of study include issues in creating and managing a system landscape based on services, architectural approaches to service-orientation and web service technologies (including semantic web services). Practical aspects of web service implementation are examined in the context of integration via the SAP Netweaver environment.

Data Management and Business Intelligence

Develops the knowledge and skills necessary to support the development of business intelligence solutions in modern organisational environments. Example topics of study include issues in data/information/knowledge management, approaches to information integration and business analytics. Practical aspects of the subject are examined in the context of the SAP Netweaver and Business Warehouse environment.

Systems project management

Develops a critical awareness of the central issues and challenges in information systems project management. Example topics of study include traditional project management techniques and approaches, the relations between projects and business strategy, the role and assumptions underpinning traditional approaches and the ways in which the state-of-the-art can be improved.

Semantic Integration Frameworks

Helps you develop a critical and practical understanding of concepts, standards and frameworks supporting semantic system integration, with a particular emphasis on the Semantic Web – the web of the future. Example topics of study include ontologies and their uses, ontology management and integration, inferencing and reasoning for and in semantic integration, as well as semantic integration standards such as RDF and OWL.

Dissertation

In addition, provided that you have reached an acceptable standard in the assessments and examinations, you may then undertake a dissertation. Work on a dissertation for this course will normally involve an in-depth study in the area of distributed information systems and computing (eg, a state-of-the-art review together with appropriate software development) and provides you with an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your expertise in this area to future employers or as a basis for future PhD study. Additionally, you can now work on an internship during your dissertation (see Special Features below).

Awards

A master's degree is awarded if you reach the necessary standard on the taught part of the course and submit a dissertation of the required standard. If you do not achieve the standard required, you may be awarded a postgraduate diploma or postgraduate certificate if eligible.

FACILITIES, EQUIPMENT AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Modules related to the different groups are taught by a total of six full-time members of staff and a number of visiting lecturers.

An extensive library is available for individual study. It stocks more than 85,000 printed books and e-books, and more than 1,400 (1,100 online) journal titles, all in the broad area of engineering. The library support can be extended further through inter-library loans.

As part of their learning experience, students have at their disposal a wide range of relevant software needed to support the programme material dissertation projects.

In recent years, this work included the design of various knowledge-based and business systems on the internet, the application of optimisation algorithms, and semantic web applications, as well as modelling of process systems.

Numerous laboratory facilities across the Faculty and the University are also available for those opting for technology-based projects, such as the process engineering facility, a control and robotics facility and signal processing labs.

The work related to the MSc dissertation can often be carried out in parallel with, and in support of, on-going research. In the past, several graduates have carried on their MSc research to a PhD programme.

RESEARCH

Process integration and systems analysis for sustainability of resources and energy efficiency are carried out within our well-established Centre for Process and Information Systems Engineering (PRISE).

Engineers and scientists are increasingly expected to have skills in information systems engineering and decision support systems alongside their main technical and/or scientific expertise.

The MSc in Advanced Process Integration and Design started in the Department of Chemical Engineering (UMIST) over twenty years ago. The programme was a result of emerging research from the Centre for Process Integration, initially focused on energy efficiency, but expanded to include efficient use of raw materials and emissions reduction. Much of the content of the course stems from research related to energy production, including oil and gas processing.

The MSc in Advanced Process Integration and Design aims to enable students with a prior qualification in chemical engineering to acquire a deep and systematic conceptual understanding of the principles of process design and integration in relation to the petroleum, gas and chemicals sectors of the process industries.

Overview of course structure and content
In the first trimester, all students take course units on energy systems, utility systems and computer aided process design. Energy Systems develops systematic methods for designing heat recovery systems, while Utility Systems focuses on provision of heat and power in the process industries. Computer Aided Process Design develops skills for modelling and optimisation of chemical processes.

In the second trimester, the students choose three elective units from a range covering reaction systems, distillation systems, distributed and renewable energy systems, biorefining, and oil and gas processing. These units focus on design, optimisation and integration of process technologies and their associated heat and power supply systems.

In two research-related units, students develop their research skills and prepare a proposal for their research project. These units develop students skills in critical assessment of research literature, group work, written and oral communication, time management and research planning.

Students then carry out the research project during the third trimester. In these projects, students apply their knowledge and skills in process design and integration to investigate a wide range of process technologies and design methodologies. Recent projects have addressed modelling, assessment and optimisation of petroleum refinery hydrotreating processes, crude oil distillation systems, power plants, waste heat recovery systems, refrigeration cycles with mixed refrigerants, heat recovery steam generators, biorefining and biocatalytic processes and waste-to-energy technologies.

The course also aims to develop students' skills in implementing engineering models, optimisation and process simulation, in the context of chemical processes, using bespoke and commercially available software.

Industrial relevance of the course
A key feature of the course is the applicability and relevance of the learning to the process industries. The programme is underpinned by research activities in the Centre for Process Integration within the School. This research focuses on energy efficiency, the efficient use of raw materials, the reduction of emissions reduction and operability in the process industries. Much of this research has been supported financially by the Process Integration Research Consortium for over 30 years. Course units are updated regularly to reflect emerging research and design technologies developed at the University of Manchester and also from other research groups worldwide contributing to the field.

The research results have been transferred to industry via research communications, training and software leading to successful industrial application of the new methodologies. The Research Consortium continues to support research in process integration and design in Manchester, identifying industrial needs and challenges requiring further research and investigation and providing valuable feedback on practical application of the methodologies. In addition, the Centre for Process Integration has long history of delivering material in the form of continuing professional development courses, for example in Japan, China, Malaysia, Australia, India, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Europe, the United States, Brazil and Colombia.

Career opportunities

The MSc course in Advanced Process Design and Integration typically attracts 40 students; our graduates have found employment with major international oil and petrochemical companies (e.g. Shell, BP, Reliance and Petrobras and Saudi Aramco), chemical and process companies (e.g. Air Products), engineering, consultancy and software companies (e.g. Jacobs and Aspen Tech) and academia.

FACILITIES, EQUIPMENT AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Modules related to the different groups are taught by a total of six full-time members of staff and a number of visiting lecturers.

As part of their learning experience, students have at their disposal a wide range of relevant software needed to support the programme material dissertation projects. In recent years, this work included the design of various knowledge-based and business systems on the internet, the application of optimisation algorithms, and semantic web applications.

Numerous laboratory facilities across the Faculty and the University are also available for those opting for technology-based projects, such as the process engineering facility, a control and robotics facility and signal processing labs.

The work related to the MSc dissertation can often be carried out in parallel with, and in support of, ongoing research. In the past, several graduates have carried on their MSc research to a PhD programme.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Engineers and scientists are increasingly expected to have skills in information systems engineering and decision-support systems alongside their main technical and/or scientific expertise.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

This programme investigates both renewable energy and systems technologies in order to produce scientific researchers and engineers who are competent in the R&D and engineering tasks applicable to the renewable energy and sustainable development sectors.

Its primary aims lie in developing a global understanding of the major types of renewable energy technologies, in-depth knowledge of the technology for biomass-based renewable energy, and knowledge and skills in systems modelling and optimisation.

A balanced curriculum will be provided with a core of renewable energy and systems engineering modules supplemented by a flexible element by way of elective modules that permit students to pursue an element of specialisation relevant to their backgrounds, interests and/or career aspirations.

An integrated approach is taken so as to provide a coherent view that explores the interrelationships between the various components of the programme.

The Power Electronics, Machines and Drives (PEMD) is a 1 year degree course that provides its students with the knowledge to design, construct and analyse integrated networks of power electronic converters, electrical machines, actuators, energy storage devices, and control systems. As a result of recent technical advances, PEMD technology is becoming commonplace and can be found for example in more-electric aircraft and ships, electric vehicles, railway systems, renewable power generation, active management of power distribution systems, automation systems for factories and industrial processes. The adoption of PEMD technology is being driven by the need to increase energy efficiency, and controllability, whilst reducing system weight and maintenance costs.

This MSc course has been designed to equip electrical engineers with the knowledge and skills that are required to design modern PEMD systems, it includes the fundamentals of electrical machine and power electronics design, system integration, control, energy management and protection. The teaching team of eight academic staff belong to the Power Conversion Group and are all actively involved in researching new aspects of machines, drives, power electronics and electrical systems, particularly for applications in transport and sustainable electricity supply. The Group's research activities and industrial links inform the course content and enrich the student experience.

Aims

-To enable you to gain experience in the design and analysis of systems in electrical engineering, for example renewable energy, more-electric aircraft, vehicles, and next-generation electric power transmission
-To enable you to critically evaluate electrical machine and converter technology applied in manufacturing, power systems and transport industries
-To employ recent developments in these research areas and to prepare students who wish to continue on to research studies
-To develop your ability to integrate strands of machines, power electronics, drives and their control

The MSc course begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of converters, machines, actuators and relevant control systems. The course will give you a high level of exposure to system integration and is illustrated by a broad range of high-technology activities related to industrial and other systems.

The next five course units give specialist tuition on advanced topics including machine design, systems analysis, converter circuits and applications. In addition to lectures, tutorials, design exercises and enquiry-based learning, you will attend industrial seminars and practical laboratories which employ mainly industrial equipment. The course will include a `mechatronic' emphasis in examining how system blocks interact and ensuring that electrical and mechanical systems work together.

The summer is spent on this individual dissertation project, which is strongly supported by the Power Conversion Research Group's research base (including the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre) and extensive industrial contacts. Cutting-edge research areas include versatile power and conversion systems for a variety of applications, including more-electric aircraft and ships, electric and hybrid vehicles, automation systems and autonomous/micro-grid power systems.

Graduates of the course will have acquired in-depth education in modern design, broad exposure to the expanding range of applications, hands-on experience and integration into state-of-the-art systems. These comprise the special knowledge and skills needed for a professional career in energy conversion systems, an area in which engineers are in demand for key power electronic/drives/automation industries.

You will learn about the general economics of the energy sector, oil exploration and production, as well as renewable energy systems.

Furthermore, your study of the various aspects of petroleum refining will be augmented by unique work assignments at a virtual oil-refining and chemical company.

Our teaching philosophy revolves around you both ‘learning by doing’ and also transferring acquired knowledge to others. Activities will be conducted both individually and in teams, with tutors providing leadership and mentoring aimed at supporting your transition into independent learners. In this partnership, we will be encouraging you to become proactive, so that you can develop your confidence to undertake a range of progressively complex and challenging tasks.

We expect you to attend all teaching sessions, as well as to read and prepare before these sessions. Teaching

The course blends lectures, workshops, seminars, self-study, and individual and group project work. You’ll develop communication and teamwork skills valued by industry through carefully designed lab exercises, group assignments, and your dissertation project.

In lectures, key concepts and ideas are introduced, definitions are stated, techniques are explained, and immediate student queries discussed.

Seminars provide the students with the opportunity to discuss at greater length issues arising from lectures.

Workshops sessions are used to foster practical engagement with the taught material.

The dissertation project plays a more significant role in supporting literature review in a technically complex area and to plan, execute and evaluate a significant investigation into a current problem area related to wireless communication systems.

Assessment

Taught modules are assessed by final examinations or by a mix of examination and laboratory work. Project management is assessed by course work. Generally, students start working on their dissertations in January and submit by the end of September.

A one-year course that will provide engineering and science graduates with a thorough knowledge of modern radio and mobile communication systems.

AIM OF COURSE

Mobile radio encompasses a diversity of communications requirements and technical solutions including cellular mobile radio and data systems (eg GSM, GPRS, 3G, 4G, WiMax) and Personal Mobile Radio as well as various indoor radio systems including Bluetooth, WIFI, Wireless Indoor Networks (WINs or LANs). In view of the huge size of the market for these enhanced systems providing flexible personal communications, it is important that industry equips itself to meet this challenge. This MSc course aims to provide industry with graduates who possess a thorough knowledge both of actual modern radio systems and of the fundamental principles and design constraints embodied in those systems.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course spans 50 weeks of full-time study and is divided into teaching and project modules. The teaching block is based on 6 modular courses, each comprising approximately 40 hours of lectures (or lecture equivalents) with additional directed study and practical work. All of these modules are augmented by specific case studies, applications and tutorials.

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

Radio Systems Engineering
A radio receiver design is analysed in detail so that design compromises may be understood. Topics include gain, selectivity, noise figure, dynamic range, intermodulation, spurious output, receiver structures, mixers, oscillators, PLL synthesis, filters and future design trends. This course also includes familiarisation with industry - standard design packages. Introduces key concepts in conventional and novel antenna design. It incovers the following topics: basic antenna structures (eg wire, reflector, patch and helical antennas); design considerations for fixed and mobile communication systems; phased array antennas; conformal and volume arrays; array factor and pattern multiplication; mutual coupling; isolated and embedded element patterns; active match; true time delay systems; pattern synthesis techniques; adaptive antennas; adaptive beamforming and nulling.

Mobile Radio Systems and Propagation
The aim of this module is to investigate the nature of radio propagation in mobile radio environments. This will be achieved through the examination of several modern mobile radio systems. The effects of the propagation environment will also be considered.

Spectrum Management and Utilization
The electromagnetic spectrum is a finite resource which has to be properly managed. This module will address issues related to spectrum management. Topics covered will include: spectrum as a resource; space, time and bandwidth; international regulation organisations and control methods; definitions of spectrum utilisation and spectrum utilisation efficiency; spectrum-consuming properties of radio systems; protection ratio; frequency dependent rejection and the F-D curve; spectrum management tools, models and databases; spectrally-efficient techniques; efficient use of the spectrum.

Electromagnetic Compatability (EMC)
This module provides an introduction to EMC. Topics include fundamental EM interactions and how these give rise to potential incompatibilities between systems; current EMC legislation; test environments and test facilities.

Communication Systems and Digital Signal Processing
Students are introduced to a range of concepts underpinning communications system design. DSP topics include the theory and applications of: real-time DSP concepts/devices; specialist filter applications; A/D and D/A interface technology; review of Fourier/digital filter applicable to DSP; modem design: modulation, demodulation, synchronisation, equalisation; signal analysis and synthesis in time and frequency domain; hands-on experience of DSP tools and DSP applications.

Low Power/Low Voltage Design and VHDL
This module introduces the low power and low voltage design requirements brought about by increasingly small scale sizes of circuit integration. The module also introduces students to VHDL, which is widely used in industry today.

Design Exercise (RF Engineering)
This self-contained exercise aims to introduce the student to aspects of RF engineering, system specification, design and implementation. A design, such as a 2GHz receiver, will be taken through to practical implementation.

Radio Frequency and Microwave Measurements
This covers the theory of EM waves, propagation and scattering. It introduces the student to methods and instruments to measure important EM wave properties such as power and reflection coeffcients.

Active RF and Microwave Circuits
This module provides the student with an appreciation of; noise in microwave systems (basic theory, sources of noise, noise power and temperature, noise figure and measurement of noise); detectors and mixers (diodes and rectification, PIN diodes, single ended mixers, balanced mixers, intermodulation products); microwave amplifiers and oscillators (microwave bipolar transistors and FETs, gain and stability, power gain, design of single stage transistor amlifier, conjugate matching, low noise amplifier design and transistor oscillator design).

PROJECT MODULE
Following a course on research skills and project planning, each student carries out one major project from Easter to September focusing on a real industrial problem. Some projects are carried out ‘on-site’ with our local and national industrial partners. The basics of project planning and structure are taught and supervision will be given whilst the student is writing a dissertation for submission at the end of the course.

Information systems (IS) today are large, complex, varied in form and distributed, serving different types of people who use a variety of devices to access information. Specialists who recognise diverse business needs, and have a systematic approach to understanding the impact of technology on organisations, are essential to the success of any IS/IT strategy. Equal in importance to the architectures of systems and the supporting technologies, is the management and delivery of content, whether in the form of data, documents, images and sound.

Increasingly, the fundamental systems comprise digital architectures and networks which then embody and enable the distribution of digital content. Developed information systems are in reality socio-technical systems incorporating people, technologies and content. The information systems specialist becomes a more broadly based information professional as they extend their range and scope of operations towards the end users and their environments. Providing services to users and people at large and ensuring information resources deliver value is equally a part of the wider world of information systems.

Course detail

This course builds on typical undergraduate computing courses studied at level 4 and 5 or equivalent ( such as HND) by offering a level 6 entry route 'integrated' to a level 7 Masters course.

The two year combination provides a route to develop new knowledge and skills in areas critical to the introduction and success of modern information systems for enterprises. The course also provides a route for people with other backgrounds and experience to engage with the world of information systems. It helps you gain a full understanding of how information systems are designed and constructed, and of the impact of technology and its integration into an organisation. It will also give you the skills you need to work effectively in a business-consulting environment, and provide a solid basis for research.

To qualify for the award of MSc Information Systems (Integrated), candidates on the integrated pathway must study five level 6 modules consisting of 20 credits each and two 10 credits each, and six level 7 modules consisting of 20 credits and a 60 credits dissertation module.

Teaching consists of lectures, seminars and laboratory work to provide a basis for the intensive individual study you need to undertake to maximize your investment of time and potential outcomes from taking the course.

Assessment

Course assessed work is a significant part of the total assessment. There is practical work, report writing, critical academic writing and the skills and knowledge gained in these contribute to a capacity to deliver a high quality dissertation.

There are a number of end of module exams. Course tutors provide appropriate support throughout the module to ensure candidates are well prepared.

The graduate in Automation and Control Engineering is an expert who can actively participate and take the lead in the executive design and development of products and systems. She/he may take on full responsibility for designing, installing, testing and maintaining complex machines and systems. The goal of the Automation and Control Engineering programme is to provide the graduate with a strong background in fundamental scientific disciplines, such as mathematics and physics, in classical engineering fields, such as thermodynamics, mechanics, electric drives, automatic control, and in the disciplines of the information and telecommunication technology, like computer science, electronics, communication networks. Thanks to the interdisciplinary nature of her/his background, the graduate has all the necessary skills to design or manage systems resulting from the integration of highly diverse components and technologies. This flexibility both in the attitude and in the competences is a significant asset of the Automation and Control Engineer, in view of the large variety of possible applications, of the continuous and rapid evolution of the technologies, as well as of the dynamics of the job market.
