The Dual MBA program is offered in conjunction with our regionally accredited, sister university, the University of the Potomac in Washington D.C., as a fully online program designed to give participants an opportunity to have applied business education within a dynamic, multicultural and international learning environment. The dual U.S./Swiss MBA degrees give our students the potential to earn a higher salary by focusing on valuable leadership, strategic management and entrepreneurial skills. The broad-based MBA curriculum ensures that graduates have advanced knowledge and skills of the major functional areas of business – finance and accounting, management, marketing and operations – and develop the ability to apply that knowledge and skills to problem solving and strategic planning. ABOUT MA/MFA VOICE STUDIES

Voice Studies courses at Central are nationally and internationally renowned, giving a specialised education in the study and practice of the spoken voice. They have a close relationship with the celebrated International Centre for Voice, based at Central.

These courses are for graduates of appropriate disciplines who wish to follow a career in voice teaching and who seek specialised study and practice in voice and speech. They are particularly likely to appeal to professionals who already have an interest in, and knowledge
of, the voice and for applying it to the fields of performance practice, performance training or other related pedagogies, for example actors, directors, drama teachers, trained singers and speech therapists.

The MFA offers a further embedding of skills and concepts learnt during its second year. In some countries, the MFA is more recognised, particularly for those interested in teaching, or research in a higher education environment.

ASSESSMENT

During the first three terms of both courses, assessment is through written work, practical projects and teaching practice. In the fourth term of the MA, students complete a dissertation or portfolio focusing on their specialist area of enquiry arising from the work of the course. In the MFA second year, assessment is by means of documents based on field experience and related research.

The Master’s Programme in Law (MLaw) has a profile of its own and utilises a new training concept. It continues the legal education that was begun at the Assessment Level and pursued further at the Bachelor’s Level and it concludes with the award of the degree of a Master of Arts HSG in Law. The MLaw is aimed at graduates who will later be admitted to the Bar. It is primarily geared to Swiss legal practice and provides a demanding generalist legal education that is integrated in the HSG’s overall concept. About this degree

This MA provides exceptional opportunities to master medieval and renaissance languages and to acquire manuscript expertise working with original manuscripts; key skills for those who want to go on to original research. Dissertation/research project

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of up to 12,000 words.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and classes. Several modules include site visits to institutions, notably the British Library, the Warburg Institute, the National Archives and the Institute of Historical Research. Assessment is through unseen examination, long essays, coursework and the dissertation.

Overview

Entry to the actuarial profession is by a demanding series of examinations, but the rewards after qualifying are great. The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in the UK has four levels of examinations to qualify. The first level, the Core Technical (CT) subjects, are taught in our BSc or MSc in Actuarial Science and lead to exemptions from CT1 to CT8.

Leading on from this, our established and successful MSc in Actuarial Management (See http://www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk/prog/msc-actuarial-management/ ) covers the more advanced actuarial subjects and offers exemptions from the syllabuses of the Core Application subjects CA1 and CA3 and Specialist Technical subjects ST2, ST4, ST5, ST6 and ST9.

Students will typically study CA1, CA3 and up to three ST subjects (two ST subjects are needed to satisfy the profession's requirements).

Taking our MSc in Actuarial Management is a great way to speed your progress to this most prestigious of careers - it's designed to take you almost all of the way to qualification. A student who graduates with a full set of exemptions from Heriot-Watt (CT, CA and ST subjects) will only have three more examinations to pass, as well as gaining the necessary work experience, to qualify as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.

Programme duration

The PG Diploma comprises the taught coursework component leading to exemptions from CA1 and the ST professional subjects and takes 9 months to complete. Successful students can then progress to the project work in the summer. This takes the form of industry-relevant case studies, assessed by written reports, which leads to the award of an MSc and exemption from the Subject CA3. In exceptional cases a student may be allowed to write a research dissertation.

The programme is also available to be studied on a part-time basis, over a maximum of 4 years.

Teaching Excellence and Student Satisfaction

30% of our teaching staff are qualified actuaries, the others are leading Mathematicians, Financial Mathematicians and Statisticians, who are nationally and internationally recognised for their research. This expertise ensures that what we teach you is current, applicable to the real workplace and current economy. Our National Student Survey results are consistently high for overall student satisfaction.

Results from the National Student Survey for 2011 reveal that 88% of our Mathematics and Statistics (including Actuarial Science) graduates are employed with a graduate position and/or undertaking further study. Our graduates go on to work for companies such as Swiss Re, Standard Life, Towers Watson, Lloyds Banking Group, Barclays Capital, Scottish Widows, Ernst & Young and many more. Graduates are employed locally in Edinburgh, London and throughout the world.

Student Actuarial Society

Heriot-Watt has a very active Students' Actuarial Society (See http://hwsas.com/ ) which won several awards at a recent Heriot-Watt 'Oscars' ceremony. This body is completely managed, enthusiastically and professionally, by our students.

Programme content

In the taught element of the programme each student takes eight semester-long courses. These are linked in pairs, one per semester. One pair of courses – covering Actuarial Risk Management – is compulsory and corresponds to subject CA1. It applies the principles of actuarial mathematics to a wide range of financial and insurance settings. Students choose a minimum of two pairs of courses from a list including Life Office Management (subject ST2), Pensions (subject ST4), Investment and Finance (subject ST5), Derivatives (subject ST6) and Enterprise Risk Management (subject ST9).

The choice of courses may depend on the coverage of actuarial subjects in the student’s first degree. Depending on individual circumstances, other optional courses may be made available, for example courses from the MSc in Actuarial Science or in other disciplines. However, students choosing to take three pairs of courses, potentially leading to exemptions from three ST subjects, will have an exceptionally broad range of employment opportunities.

Students may graduate with the Postgraduate Diploma at the end of the 2nd semester, after completing the taught coursework component leading to exemptions form CA1 and the ST professional subjects. Successful students can then progress to the project work in the summer. This takes the form of industry-relevant case studies, assessed by written reports, which leads to the award of an MSc and exemption from the Subject CA3. In exceptional cases a student may be allowed to write a research dissertation.The dissertation is an extended research project, with regular supervision, undertaken in the summer. The diploma takes 9 months and the MSc takes 1 year full time and part time options are available.

Security Paradigms
Deconstructs the truth content of contrasting and often contradictory models of key security issues from the competing state power and human security perspectives.

Developing and Managing Projects
Allows you to apply your learning to an in-depth investigation of a research question of your choice. Study Online

Bond Law has partnered with the Swiss International Law School (SiLS) to offer an online study option in the LLM with a specialisation in International Commercial Law and Dispute Resolution. The specialisation has been designed for law students and career professionals from different cultural and legal backgrounds, who aim for a high-level career in an international law firm, multinational company or government organisation. Its four 20 cps subjects apply state-of-the-art distance learning techniques to bridge the distance between students and their instructors, peers and resources. Online classes of not more than 20 students are supervised by instructors based all over the world.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The Master of Laws program comprises 80 credit points of law subjects from the list of postgraduate law electives. There are no compulsory subjects. 

Students can graduate with an LLM with a 'specialisation' by completing at least 40 credit points of subjects from one of our five specialisation categories. The name of the specialisation appears on the students' testamur. However, students are not required to complete a specialisation, and may choose to graduate with a general LLM by completing any combination of law subjects totally 80 credit points.

To be eligible for a specialisation, students must complete at least FOUR of the 10 credit point subjects within the specialisation category. No general electives are offered in this program.

Teaching methodology

Bond University’s teaching methodology involves a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, examinations, projects, presentations, assignments, computer labs and industry projects.

#International Students please note: Under Australian student visa regulations the number of online subjects undertaken by student visa holders in this program cannot exceed 20 credit points. The remaining 60 credit points must be comprised of on-campus subjects.

For domestic students, the LLM provides a specialist postgraduate qualification to augment the practice of law in Australia. For international students, the program provides a wide range of subjects to broaden and internationalise an undergraduate law qualification.

The School Direct Programme (Salaried) is a new route into teaching at both primary and secondary levels. Participating schools, or clusters of schools that join together, are allocated a set number of student-teacher places which can be applied for. Students will earn a salary while they train.

About this programme

Students will be part of a school team from the start and will receive intensive support from experienced teachers in the classroom. Opportunities will exist to build networks with fellow trainees. This route leads to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

There are two compulsory school placements. Students are expected to complete the associated tasks, and to build a portfolio of evidence during the academic year to demonstrate they have met national teaching standards.

Students do not undertake academic credits on this programme. However, all components will need to be assessed to gain QTS.

Placement

As part of the programme students will spend time in placement at a school or college, during which time their teaching practice will be supported by a school subject tutor and mentor. For this programme students will spend the majority of the programme in school, employed as an unqualified teacher.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered via a series of lectures and workshop at the UCL Institute of Education for 15 days (10 days' Professional Studies and five days subject-specific training) spread over the autumn and spring terms. The placement schools are responsible for providing an additional 45 days of training activities, alongside the practical teaching experience. Students are assessed on their practical teaching and their progress in achieving the standards for Qualified Teacher Status by gathering evidence in the form of a portfolio.

The interdisciplinary Master in Theater at Bern University of the Arts HKB is a specialised degree for theatre professionals from a wide range of disciplines. It leads to a Master’s Degree in Theater (specialisation Expanded Theater) over the course of three semesters (90 ECTS). In this programme artists from different performance disciplines work and learn together: actors, dancers, performers, puppetry performers and others.

The Master in Theater is a laboratory in which different theatre practices are examined and researched. The students deal with an advanced understanding of theater that goes beyond the borders of any particular discipline. This not only applies to contemporary forms of theatre performance but also to the development and implementation of new visions.

Students are coached by a team of lecturers at Bern University of the Arts as well as by renowned guest lecturers.

The Master in Theater at the HKB is part of the Master-Campus-Theater-CH, which is offered in cooperation with the other Swiss theatre academies (Zurich University of the Arts, Accademia Teatro Dimitri Verscio and La Manufacture Lausanne).

The Master of Arts in Contemporary Arts Practice is a multidisciplinary degree course for artists from the visual arts, the Performance arts, music and literature. Its starting point is the student’s individual approach and choice of emphases; together with interdisciplinary projects it enables multidisciplinary exchanges with students and teaching staff from other disciplines.

The course aims to foster an independent artistic outlook within a framework of collective and interdisciplinary working interrelationships. The course of study sharpens students’ individual artistic practices through direct engagement with other artistic strategies. A knowledge of current discourse in other art forms causes their view of their own work to change.

Degree Structure

The Master’s degree comprises 120 ECTS credit points and is usually completed in four semesters. The degree is structured into three degree modules.

The degree places independent study and teaching, disciplinary foundations and transdisciplinary expansion in a balanced relationship. At the heart of the Master’s degree is artistic production, which includes an MA project in one of the specialisations. The didactic combination of one-to-one lessons with a high proportion of independent study, the targeted consolidation of technical and theoretical knowledge of the subject and context in elective courses, and the exchange between peers and professionals in various networks and in the joint Master’s fora support artistic production. Since in today’s artworld there is almost no generally binding canon of knowledge and skills, perfecting one’s art rests on individual decisions based on a wide-ranging knowledge of the dynamic state of the art.

Module Groups

Artistic Production/Master's Thesis (70 ECTS)
At the core of the programme, is the students' independent work on their own projects. This individual work is supervised by a personal mentor in one-to-one tuition. Students develop a deep understanding of their own authorship. They learn to present their work and to confront their own creativity with the strategies and approaches of other artists. In this endeavour, they are supported by numerous artistic personalities from the different departments of the BUA, as well as from the Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz in Basel and from further partner institutions in an international network.

Transdisciplinarity: Individuality in Context (30 ECTS)
The transdisciplinary aspect of the studies is largely based on the study of other genres' strategies of artistic authorship and by the search for common parameters for content and structure.
In lectures and seminars on contemporary art theory and media studies, common terminology is developed to facilitate communication about artistic strategies and production procedures beyond the limits of each discipline's specific vocabulary. The exchange among the different specialisations of the CAP occurs within the framework of tuition as well as in the interdisciplinary projects, but primarily in the common theory blocks, in the encounters with mentors from other disciplines and in the thematic project weeks that take place once per semester. Here, there are talks and practical workshops, transdisciplinary meetings, discussions, project and work presentations as well as courses on research strategies and scientific work. These block events not only heighten the understanding of one's own and unfamiliar working processes, they also prepare students for their professional future, when large projects will be realised in specialised artistic collectives and networks, which must be able to communicate across their fields' boundaries.

There is also tuition beyond the subject's artistic boundaries - on professional skills in economic terms. Students gain a basic understanding of how to set up a company and how to conduct self-promotion. This includes tuition about management, administration, law and copyright, marketing, project management etc.

Subject-related Theory and Practice (20 ECTS)
The third module group addresses the theory and practice of the respective specialisations. This includes courses on technical specialisation and perfection (for instance: composition, musical strategies, specific software knowledge, lighting, curating, exhibiting) and on the subject-related theory (for instance: lectures and guest seminars on contemporary art/music; graduate societies) as well as excursions and encounters with artists, institutions, clients, teachers etc. The various courses are open to all students of the MA CAP and the partner institutions, if they meet the individual course's requirements.

The degree programme culminates in the Master thesis. This consists of the public presentation of an independent artistic creation and the written reflection on the student's own practice. The written part can be conducted as a research project. Content and form of the artistic presentation, reflectiveness and relevance are evaluated by external experts.

Specialisations

Fine Arts
In the Fine Arts specialisation current developments in art and the historical foundations of art are the reference for students’ work. Static and moving pictures in analogue or digital form, sculpture and installation techniques are options as much as conceptual and performative approaches or the treatment of social processes and documentary strategies. The course is notable for its strong engagement with the professional demands of sound, words and performative production. The Fine Arts specialisation collaborates closely with the Master of Fine Arts at the Academy of Art and Design Basel (HGK Basel). Students have a broad range of options from which to assemble the content of their studies according to their own needs. These are extended by the BUA’s membership in the Swiss Master of Fine Arts Network. The discipline-related foundations for the Fine Arts specialisation are generally laid by a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts.

Music and Media Art
In this programme the main focus is on sound art, experimental and electronic music. Students develop compositions, sound installations or other sound-based art forms. In seminars and lectures exemplary works of sound art from the past and present are discussed and analyzed. We teach compositional strategies and approach the subject matter from a contemporary and historical-theoretical point of view. Reference to one's own work is a key focus. The aim is not to solely work on the development of one's own artistic practices, but also to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of contemporary compositions and art forms. In addition to the MA CAP program students can attend other courses, which teach practical skills in programming with Max MSP,hardware hacking, audio technology or interface handling. The integration of sound and musical aspects into areas like performance art, literature and fine arts has increasingly gained importance over the last decades. Hence, this study program intensively deals with the musical-sound aspects of different art forms. In the MA CAP the interaction between the visual, performative, literary and sound aspects, brings students from different artistic areas together, encourages exchange and enables collaborative working.

Literary Writing/Translation
Literature reacts to other arts, just as much as it influences them. Students hoping to practice their literary art in the field of tension of contemporary art production and its advanced reflection, find in the CAP a wide range of teachers and students with diverse backgrounds. Alongside this vibrant exchange and proximity, they work on their own texts of all genres, under the supervision of mentors. This constitutes the core of the students` individual study profiles. Something unique about the CAP is, that the work of the literary translators (with the source languages German, French, Spanish, Italian, English and Russian and the target languages German or French) is regarded as artistic production. The offers for translators are expanded thanks to a cooperation with the "Centre de la Traduction Littéraire" at the University of Lausanne.

Performance
In the sense of physical presence, real or conceptual action, performance occurs in various artistic fields. It addresses certain issues relating to body, space and time. Considering the transdisciplinary history of performance, we understand it as a varied and open field of general performativity.
Performance is regarded as part of all the different artistic disciplines united under the umbrella of the CAP.
As an active form and physical action, it resides within music, fine arts and also literary writing and occurs in close connection with these separate forms. In addition, the focus on performativity opens up new forms of representation, viewing and listening, participating, which the studies are supposed to explore in the practical work as well as in the theoretical reflection.
