Course summary

This two-year, full-time programme is taught in the UK, Sweden and Spain and will prepare you for an international career in the protection of human rights.

Our programme has a strong emphasis on professional development, and how human rights principles can be put into practice through policy and active engagement in these issues. This programme is designed for postgraduates who want to make a significant contribution to the human rights agenda internationally with civil society organisations, governments and the public and private sector. You will be exposed to legal, political, sociological, and anthropological approaches to human rights promotion and protection in a globalised world.

Partners in this programme include the University of Roehampton (London, UK), Göteborgs Universitet (Göteborg, Sweden) and Universidad de Deusto (Bilbao, Spain). As well as teaching and research of the highest standards, they offer specialist expertise in human rights law, the rights of indigenous peoples and research methods.

Underpinning the programme is an understanding of human rights practice that goes beyond but does not ignore the law. We will use the development, critique, application and consequences of law to understand human rights practice. By the end of the course, you will have gained a holistic understanding of human rights in a broader social and political context. A work placement is central to this programme, which may involve working with the organisations of the state, civil society and the corporate sector.

At Roehampton, you will engage with active researchers who are committed to social justice and have made ground-breaking impacts on society. The Crucible Centre for Human Rights Research is a multidisciplinary research centre conducting research on a range of contemporary human rights, migration and related issues. You will benefit from the number of regular workshops and seminars that the centre holds as well as being a part of major EU-funded projects and activities.

Content

Mainstreamed throughout the programme is an attention to human rights practice in the areas of gender, childhood and religion. You will gain a thorough understanding of human rights issues through using an academic multi-disciplinary approach and the application of human rights theory and practice in relation to law, sociology, social anthropology, international relations, civil society and political science. You will be able to articulate human rights issues from a variety of perspectives, to apply theory from different fields and disciplines, to discuss and assess the strengths and weaknesses of different perspectives and critically evaluate how these perspectives can be used by different actors, agencies and stakeholders.

You will start off studying at the Göteborgs Universitet (Göteborg, Sweden) from August to January, and then from February to July at the Universidad de Deusto (Bilbao, Spain), and from September to December here at Roehampton. From December to June, you’ll have the opportunity to study in the most appropriate country to your dissertation subject area.

You will study organisational analysis to ensure that the organisations through which you pursue human rights work are better managed. This element of the programme combines class and placement learning, which is central to the programme. The modules in this course will help you develop the analytical skills and expertise in human rights perspectives, contexts organisations, policy-making and practice.

The Experimental and Medical Biosciences master’s programme prepares students for a scientific career within the broad field of the life sciences, with particular emphasis on understanding cellular and molecular mechanisms related to health and disease.

The programme has been designed to provide students with frontline knowledge in biomedicine and related subjects. It unites theoretical knowledge with practical skills, as is most clearly seen in the individual experimental projects.

The master’s programme in Medical Biosciences at LiU received the highest rating in the Swedish Higher Education Authority’s assessment of Sweden’s biomedicine programmes, with five of the evaluated learning outcomes being appraised as Very High Quality and the sixth as High Quality - – the best result of all international biomedicine master’s programmes in Sweden.

Programme description

The Experimental and Medical Biosciences master’s programme prepares students for a scientific career within the broad field of the life sciences, with particular emphasis on understanding cellular and molecular mechanisms related to health and disease.

The programme has been designed to provide students with frontline knowledge in biomedicine and related subjects. It unites theoretical knowledge with practical skills, as is most clearly seen in the individual experimental projects.

Courses are taught using several formats, including regular lectures, tutorial groups that apply problem-based learning (PBL), laboratory work and seminar discussions. The laboratory classes use powerful model systems to illustrate modern concepts of medical biology, while PBL promotes lifelong learning. After two initial, mandatory courses, elective courses offer individual study plans and flexibility in creating a profile that increases the employability of all students within the life sciences. Different areas such as cardiovascular biology, stem cells and applied regenerative medicine, medical genetics and neurobiology are covered. Scientific reasoning, ethical attitudes and multidisciplinary collaboration are given particular emphasis, in order to prepare students for an independent and professional future in biomedicine.

Individual projects in which students apply their theoretical and methodological knowledge are key parts of the programme. During the first year, the project in Experimental and Medical Biosciences will allow students to work with on a specific assignment for ten or twenty weeks. During the second year, a one‑term degree project (master’s thesis) is carried out. Both projects are chosen in collaboration with a supervisor, and the student’s aim is to define a research goal, carry out the experimental work and produce a written report that places the work in the context of current knowledge in the field. The degree project is conducted in a research laboratory, either at Linköping University or at another Swedish or international university, in industry or in the public sector.

Double‑degree programme

An extra feature of the programme is the possibility for a limited number of students to study in Vienna, Austria, during the second year. Apart from the experience, an additional degree is earned - – Master of Science in Engineering. Studies at the University of Applied Sciences, Technikum Wien, within the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine programme have a strong link to industry.

The programme focuses on critical analysis of environmental challenges and applying science to solve real‑world problems. It consists of core and specialisation courses followed by thesis work. Upon completion of the programme, students acquire a Master’s degree in Science with a major in Environmental Science. 

Core courses

In the core courses, students gain knowledge of theories, approaches, techniques, and methods from various scientific disciplines (such as critical analysis of sustainability perspectives, commodity chain analysis, indicators, resource management, and GIS). They also learn to develop general analytical skills that will enable them to interpret, design, communicate, and implement sustainability and environmental issues. Specialisation

In the third term, students begin to specialise. Elective courses are offered that train their research skills and provide the opportunity for internships at businesses, organisations or research institutes in Sweden or abroad.

The students on our programme have the opportunity to design their own profile. To support this process, students are offered a series of workshops as mentoring sessions with key staff members throughout their education. These workshops guide the students’ specialisation pathways.

Unique learning portfolio

A unique aspect of the programme is the learning portfolio exercises that each student prepares to suit their particular academic needs and interests (under faculty guidance). The learning portfolio consists of several steps during the programme, ranging from reflection on students’ competence and skills, individual goal setting, and progression in their skills in academic writing. The students gain a more accurate focus on their specific skills, and the portfolio promotes both critical thinking and greater self-knowledge, both of which will be important for the students’ professional life.

MSc Thesis

In the final term, the students work individually on a project under the guidance of staff. The master’s thesis can either have a research focus or be undertaken in collaboration with external organizations, businesses, etc. Previous theses have addressed a wide range of environmental topics, demonstrating students’ innovation and creativity, and highlighting socially important issues.

You’ll study interdisciplinary applied mathematics and modern scientific computing, with an emphasis on problem solving. You will gain an understanding of different disciplines and industrial problems. The course links mathematics with engineering, biology and other sciences, and gives students direct contact with industry.

You will develop an awareness of modern applications of mathematics in an interdisciplinary environment. You will get professional level training in mathematical methods, mathematical modelling, scientific computation and other applied techniques, combining both theory and applications.

The course specialises in interdisciplinary applications of mathematics, notably in industry and mathematical biology. You’ll have the opportunity to choose from a wide scope of interdisciplinary units, ranging from astrophysics over cryptography to computational chemistry.

You can choose to do a three month project which can be linked to industry or a six month work placement with a company. The placement route offers a chance to experience first-hand how mathematics can be applied in industry.

You will benefit from the close interactions that the department has with many industrial companies, who come and work with students and help to run projects.

You’ll help meet the global need for academically proficient and technically expert individuals, who can bridge the gap between in-situ and ex-situ approaches to conservation. Supported by legislation in many countries, endangered species recovery represents the recognised scientific approach to the conservation of threatened species by way of a recovery plan. This course aims to develop detailed knowledge and experience of recovery planning, and the skills and knowledge associated with in-situ and ex-situ species recovery.

The combination of theory and practical sessions will enable you to develop a holistic approach to endangered species recovery and conservation. Part of your study will take place at the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust (DWCT) International Training Centre.

The course also offers you the opportunity to undertake an international research project using NTU’s links with conservation projects in North America, Sweden and South Africa.

You’ll be taught through a mixture of lectures, seminars, online learning, and practical sessions. Independent learning is required, and you’ll undertake high-quality research. This program is for those seeking multiple, critical perspectives on the central role adult learning plays as individuals and communities engage with the positive and negative effects of globalization.

Students proceed through the two-year, 30-credit M.Ed. program as a cohort drawn from the four participating institutions and will get to know one another well, working together in various groupings throughout the program. Required courses are sequenced so that, with careful planning of electives, all requirements can be completed in 24 months. Our MSc Dental Implantology (Dental Specialties) course gives dental practitioners the knowledge and skills needed to replace missing teeth and support oral tissues with dental implants.

This course is ideal for dentists with a range of experience, from those new to the discipline to those with considerable implant exposure.

You will develop the requisite knowledge and skills to undertake implant surgery and prosthodontic reconstruction with predictable long-term success while studying a comprehensive range of course units.

You will complete a five-day foundation course at Manchester Dental Education Centre (MANDEC) in July. This ensures that you possess foundation knowledge before starting the MSc in September.

During the MSc, you will complete five cases and go on surgical placements where you will receive one-to-one mentoring from an experienced implant surgeon.

The clinical training part of the course involves travel and attendance at the dental facilities on campus and associated practices.

Teaching and learning

You will complete a five-day foundation course at Manchester Dental Education Centre (MANDEC) in July. This ensures that you possess foundation knowledge before starting the MSc in September.

Learning on the MSc is via observation, seminars and hands-on experience, with contributors from the clinical specialities of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Restorative Dentistry so you can observe surgical and restorative stages.

The course is supported by a number of consultants, specialists and experienced general implantologists and regular observation sessions are organised.

You will complete five cases and go on surgical placements where you will receive one-to-one mentoring from an experienced implant surgeon.

You will also attend a two-day cadaver course run by the Royal College of Surgeons and local consultants, and travel to an implant company teaching centre in Sweden for two days to receive teaching from well-established international contributors. You will continue to attend several hands-on courses at MANDEC.

In Year 1, you are required to attend lectures and clinical attachments. At the start of the new term in September you will be required to learn at the University for three days a week until the last week of October. You will then be required to learn at the University on a Monday and Tuesday on (mostly) a weekly basis.

In Year 2, you are required to attend lectures and clinical attachments on a fortnightly basis. Lectures take place at the University itself, while clinical attachments take place at private clinics off campus.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is via written exams, essays, case presentations and viva voce.

The PGCert, PGDip and MSc courses run in succession. The PGCert offers a foundation in implantology, and the PGDip builds on this, offering a diverse range of contemporary experiences and techniques.

A research dissertation is required for the MSc qualification, many of which are published in international peer-reviewed journals.

Unit assessment methods include:

  • Research Methods: two tutor-marked assignments and participation in specified online group activities;
  • Biostatistics: two tutor-marked assignments;
  • Dissertation: an independent research project with a written report of 10,000-15,000 words.

Course unit details

There are four components to the course:

Research Methods unit: Training in skills related to the design, execution and interpretation of clinical and clinically related research.

Biostatistics unit:  Training in skills in data collection, simple analysis and interpretation of clinical and clinically related research.

Specialist Clinical units:  Gain an understanding of the scientific basis of implantology, with particular emphasis on current theories relevant to the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of adult patients.

  • Medical emergency management
  • Cross infection control
  • Radiological protection
  • Clinical governance
  • Interactive seminars related to implantology
  • Pre-clinical skills course
  • Clinical treatment sessions in state-of-the-art facilities
  • Attendance at consultation clinics
  • Case reviews

Research unit: This unit aims to give you skills in the identification, formulation and implementation of a specific research project and to give you experience of working independently.

Year 1 course content

  • Implant Basic Sciences (15 credits)
  • Basic Implant Surgical and Restorative Techniques parts 1 and 2 (15 credits each)
  • Implant Treatment Planning (15 credits)

Completion of the first year provides the 60 credits needed for the Dental Implantology PGCert.

Year 2 course content

  • Advanced Implant Surgical and Restorative Techniques (15 credits)
  • Research Methods and Biostatistics (15 credits each)

Completion of Year 1 plus Research Methods and Advanced Implant Sciences provides the 120 credits needed for the Dental Implantology PGDip.

  • Research project and dissertation (60 credits) : For MSc students only. You will have a supervisor who will discuss the choice of research project and give advice and guidance throughout. Dissertation areas include the writing of a systematic review in any field of implant dentistry or lab-based research projects.

Completion of Years 1 and 2 provide the 180 credits needed for the Dental Implantology MSc.

SSE MBA Executive Format targets talented and ambitious leaders, executives and high potentials. Most participants are 10-15 years into their careers and have significant international experience. They represent a broad range of industries and positions, have different academic and cultural backgrounds, are highly motivated to learn and are willing to share their knowledge and experience. The average age is 37-39 years.

To be eligible to the SSE MBA program the applicant must have the following:

  1. a Bachelor's degree or higher
  2. a minimum of five years' relevant professional experience

Online learning and master thesis

All course activities will be done within an online learning plat form, and you will write a master thesis (15 credits) in which you apply your theoretical and methodological knowledge in the Adult learning area. The Applied Ethology and Animal Biology master’s programme deals with animal behaviour and biology from an applied perspective, including problems associated with keeping animals in captivity. The aim is to provide students with a solid understanding of theory and methods of applied ethology.

You gain a good working knowledge of the programme’s central issues, such as the biology of stress and its role in animal welfare, the effects of domestication on animal behaviour, the physiology of behaviour, and conservation biology. The programme is taught in collaboration with Kolmården Wildlife Park, one of the largest and most highly renowned zoos in Sweden.
