In this industry-focussed course you will explore sustainable organisations across urban and rural development and regeneration; natural resource management and wildlife conservation; and the diversifying benefits from international and domestic tourism. You will gain enhanced practical and analytical skills to develop tourism policies and practices built on sustainable practice in a global setting.

Our academic staff are widely regarded as research pioneers in the field of high-yield, independent (or backpacker) travel, and the associated impacts on urban tourism and the development of small- and medium-sized enterprises.

To broaden your understanding of the international market and the role that a sustainable tourism industry can play in emerging economies, study overseas. You can attend a partially funded intensive field school to examine the patterns of development within an Asia-Pacific emerging economy, such as Fiji, Vietnam or Cambodia. Or you can participate in an international student exchange semester at one of our prestigious partner universities in Sweden, Estonia or Latvia.

Graduates are employed in a variety of government and private-sector tourism organisations: state, regional and national tourism offices; management consultancy firms; advertising agencies; media and TV research and journalism; internet communication organisations; local government tourism agencies; international education organisations; and airline and tour operators.

Course Structure

The course is structured in three parts. Part A. Foundations for international sustainable tourism management studies, Part B. Core Master's study and Part C. Advanced expertise. All students complete Part B. Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A or Part C or a combination of the two.

PART A. Foundations for international sustainable tourism management studies
These studies will introduce you to international sustainable tourism studies at advanced undergraduate or graduate level. They are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field. .

PART B. Core Master's study
These studies draw on best practices within the broad realm of the tourism industry, policy governance and research, to develop a critical understanding of the relationships between tourism and sustainable development with a particular emphasis on emerging economies and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises within them.

PART C. Advanced expertise
The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development. You have two options.

The first option is a program of coursework study where you select the units to suit your own interests. This option includes the opportunity to undertake an internship in the field.

The second option is a 24 point research thesis. Students wishing to use this Masters course as a pathway to a higher degree by research should take this second option.

Students admitted to the course, who have a recognised honours degree in a cognate discipline including humanities or social sciences, will receive credit for Part C, however, should they wish to complete a 24 point research project as part of the course they should consult with the course coordinator

Who it’s for

Course Overview

The MA International Tourism Management programme is available as a full or part time campus based programme as well as a part-time online programme. In part one of the programme students will study a number of modules which will enable them to gain a systematic understanding of the nature and development of tourism and destinations, marketing and management.

Tourism specific modules will initiate discussion about the development of places as sustainable destinations, destination management, place image, socio-cultural, environmental, economic and political impacts of tourism and the potential of sustainable approaches to tourism development.

Additionally, students will also develop an understanding of management principles and marketing applied to the tourism context and will engage in critical thinking about contemporary global issues which form the backdrop to the discipline. In part two of the programme, students can elect to undertake a dissertation, integrated case study or business development proposal. Exit awards also include Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma.

This course meets the demand to develop managers with the ability to implement responsible tourism strategies within marketing, operations and product development.

You will explore domestic and international tourism understanding that responsible principles are as applicable to the Yorkshire Dales as they are to The Gambia. Responsible Tourism Theory & Practice (distance learning only) (20 credits)
This introductory module to the course introduces the concept of responsible tourism and ensures that all students have a common knowledge base about tourism assets and the tourism industry. (This module is not available to full-time students)

Tourism Destination Management: Planning & Policy (20 credits)
This module focuses on the strategies available for the management of a destination, including evaluating the role of public sector agencies and local communities in managing tourism and exploring how the public and private sector stakeholders can work together with civil society to achieve the objectives of responsible tourism management.

Masters Research Methods (20 credits)
This module involves learning the skills needed to research and assess responsible tourism initiatives and make realistic recommendations for enhancements.

Masters Research Project (40 credits)
This final module allows you to apply your research skills to an organisation, destination or initiative of your choice and apply your project management and business research skills to evaluating and improving the initiative, grounded on your theoretical understanding of responsible tourism.

The module offers you an opportunity to undertake practical experience in a work environment and gain invaluable first-hand knowledge. It is designed to help you engage with the process of planning and delivering expertise in practice, and to reflect upon and take steps to improve your academic, personal and professional skills.

In Semester 1 (September–January) you will have classes on CV development, interview skills, target setting, reflective practice and experiential learning, leading to 100 hours of professional experience in Semester 2 (February–June). This experience could take the form of a part-time job, an unpaid internship, a volunteering opportunity in the university or time as a mentee in your chosen industry. You can also take this module as part of a live consultancy in connection with one of your tourism, sport, hospitality or event modules, either in the UK or a School of Sport and Service Management project overseas.

Primary curriculum goals include:
- to gather sound and application-oriented knowledge to further develop management expertise and approaches to entrepreneurship in tourism;
- the reflection and discussion of key competencies needed to develop entrepreneurial and intercultural leadership skills;
- the students acquire profound and practice-based knowledge about strategic and operational marketing and learn how to professionally apply this knowledge in the tourism and leisure industry;
- the development of key skills and competencies needed to lead family businesses in tourism;
- the development of a sound understanding and theory of market trends and their implications for international tourism;
- to gather sound knowledge and know-how to deal with the key-issues for the management of destinations and innovation.

Within the framework of the Master degree program “Entrepreneurship & Tourism” students have the opportunity to choose between two innovative areas of specialization, namely “Strategic Management & Tourism” and “Marketing Management & Tourism”. In “Strategic Management & Tourism”, courses are held in German and English, whereas the courses in “Marketing Management & Tourism” are held exclusively in English.

The Master specialization ‘Strategic Management & Tourism’ comprises 4 semesters with 15 seminar weeks each including a total of 72 credit units of required courses, which equals a total of 1,080 units of instruction. Attendance is mandatory in all courses.

The third semester is designed around an international study focus, which is achieved through cooperation
with selected partner universities. In the fourth semester, the students are expected to write a Master thesis that is academically
sound and has a strong industry focus. The language of instruction is English.

The curriculum consists of modules clustering seminar blocks that are related in content.
