This course is aimed at designers, creative workers and other specialists who want to direct their practice towards progressive sustainability and social agendas. It focuses on the value of design as a vehicle for addressing social and ecological concerns in both developed and developing world settings. It will equip you with the knowledge, capabilities and confidence to challenge the status quo by applying design thinking to the generation of design-led interventions for a sustainable future.

What will you study?

The Sustainable Design MA is directed towards the goal of creating a more sustainable and equitable society. You will explore innovative and practical ways to help realise those visions, emphasising design, creativity, empathy, innovation and activism.

The course encourages critical thinking about the social and ecological agendas it addresses. The course is design-based, but not confined to design practice - it includes a significant amount of theoretical and contextual studies. It is possible to choose a dissertation option for the final major project.

You will be taught by leading academics and practitioners in sustainable design, social design, social innovation, participatory design, strategic design, service design, design-led innovation, and related topics. The course incorporates collaboration with partners such as Design Council, Futerra, Greengaged, Sorrell Foundation, ThinkPublic and Uscreates.

Assessment

Design project work, live projects, research project folders, 5,000-word critical essay, and a major design research project.

Course structure

The Sustainable Design MA course is part of the School of Design's postgraduate programme. The structure – shared with students from Communication Design MA, Product & Furniture Design MA, and Fashion MA – enables you to explore your individual specialist interests in sustainable design within an integrative learning environment that provides a comprehensive understanding of the value and role of interdisciplinary methods and ways of working. The influences and impact of thinking from other related design subjects on your own specialist study is an important aspect of the identity and the community of interdisciplinary practice at masters level in the School of Design.

This structure is designed to help progress and develop your independent learning, encouraging you to construct and explore projects concerned with areas of particular personal interests. The overarching course philosophy, based upon an emphasis on research, methodology and design thinking, allows individual and personal concerns to be explored through focused study in sustainable design.

The two shared modules of the School of Design's Postgraduate Framework both commence with a symposium, in which high-profile external speakers present their work and contribute to a debate on a topic of relevance to all courses in the Framework.

Product design is about understanding and meeting the needs of people, society, business and the planet, and questioning existing ways of designing and manufacturing things to discover opportunities to design innovative, sustainable products that enrich quality of life and push the discipline into new territory.

You will join a vibrant international community of creative practitioners, from a variety of cultures, to study, learn and develop innovative product design. Students find the programme demanding and stimulating and produce product design of an exceptionally high standard.

Product design is a broad discipline, and we support postgraduate students exploring a wide variety of approaches including opportunities to discover and to solve genuine problems with innovative, research-led solutions; opportunities to raise questions and promote ethical debate through critical and speculative design; and opportunities to experiment in new ways with materials and making processes.

Programme structure

Each semester you will take one theory-based course and one practice-based course. Courses are designed to align with the product design process.

Semester 1 courses focus on introducing a variety of methods of design research and how to apply these methods in practice, within an individual research-led design project.

Semester 2 courses introduce methods and practice of developing new product design.

Semester 3 courses on the MA focus on the theories and practice of communication and exhibition of product design. Those on the MFA introduce deep reflective thinking and practice through a series of events and prototype deployments, which enable you to open up your design work for wider critical input.

Semester 4 courses on the MFA focus on the theories and practice of communication and exhibition of product design.

STUDY TRIPS

Students will take part in an international study trip of one week in one European Fashion Capital. They will have the opportunity to meet with leading industry professionals and visit companies in the fashion, design and luxury industries.

During the company visits students will work on a project relating to one of these industries and in alignment with their future career ambitions.

INTERNSHIP

Each student will undertake an internship of a minimum of three months in a company of their choice at the end of the classroom part of the program. The internship will contribute directly to the content of the Final Management Project and may take place anywhere in the world.

FINAL MANAGEMENT PROJECT

The second year of the program is dedicated to the Final Management Project which will be undertaken under the supervision of a GGSB professor.
Students will focus on a management aspect of the fashion, design and luxury industries; they are also encouraged to choose the subject of the Final Management Project in coherence with their future career goals. It is possible to complete the project in parallel with an employment or an internship in France or abroad.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Foreign language skills are essential in a globally competitive business environment. The program is taught in English, and no prior knowledge of French is required to attend the program. Students have the possibility of learning French or another foreign language such as Spanish or Chinese during the program.
This language component, although not compulsory, is highly recommended for students who intend to pursue an international career, since companies in the Fashion, Design and Luxury industry are currently recruiting personnel speaking the language of the country in which they are based, in addition to English and in-demand languages like Chinese or Russian.

Module Details

This course uses the experience and skills of teaching staff with a proven track record in interior design studies, practice and research. You will also benefit from a multi-disciplinary learning environment where more than 100 postgraduate students in architecture, interior design, urban design, sustainable design and historic building conservation can meet and work.

Here are the units you will study:

Practice: This unit provides you with the opportunity to evaluate your own design practice and the design discipline from which you come and to contextualise this within interior design practice. Practice-based methods will be used to explore the interior through inter-disciplinary means and you will build on and develop your own creative practice through real-world situations, through doing. You will also be involved in discussions around the social, political, economic and professional contexts that drive the construction of interior space. You will be expected to analyse and critically evaluate the interior context, develop briefs, strategies and a proposal for a given area.

Theory: This unit aims to interrogate the history of interior design and its relationship to practice. Interior design is a relatively youthful profession, whose history is situated in the gaps between architectural history and design history. In this unit you will explore the intellectual idea of the interior through debate and discussion, catalysed through a series of workshops and critical readings, developing an understanding of the interior condition. We bring in specialists from other disciplines, actively encouraging debate. You will also be expected to explore and build on your own understanding of interior space by keeping a reflective journal.

Research Methods and Research Proposal: In this unit you will develop research skills, which will aid you throughout your course and particularly in producing your thesis. You will be asked to establish a critical position within an Outline Research Proposal. You will develop techniques, which will allow you to engage proactively within your area of study. You will be encouraged to explore methods of investigation that are responsive to, as well as inquisitive of, the conditions presented and which therefore speculate around possible critical scenarios. Implicit within these explorations is the need to investigate diverse means of representation and depiction through a variety of possible media and discourse.

Integration: This unit allows you to work in a multi-disciplinary context through groups within your own subject area and across the areas of interior design, urban design, sustainable architecture and historic building conservation, as well as explore the interrelationships of all disciplines. You will need to work collectively on given projects or problems related to staff-run studios, which explore a range of given themes. These themes will be introduced at the start of the course and connect to research areas within the School.

Work-Based Learning: This unit gives you the opportunity to replace a 30-credit core unit with a work-based version of that unit. Not all units can be replaced and you will need to discuss the appropriateness of a unit with tutors. Work-based learning requires you to engage in critical and reflective learning in the workplace. This will be developed through a learning contract, negotiated by you, your employer and School. The work undertaken in practice will be appraised through critical reflective writing that engages with the practice of the particular subject discipline and this will form the assessment artefacts.

Thesis: Your thesis is a substantial research-based project that enables you to carry out an in-depth investigation into a subject area of personal interest, which is related to or developed from a theme studied during the course. The proposed research theme should have a clearly defined focus to allow for in depth theoretical, contextual and visual research.

Programme Assessment

This course is lecture and studio-based, culminating in a written or design-led thesis project. It will involve case study investigations, group work, discussion and planning of interior environments, as well as independent study to develop design or research-based responses to interior problems.

Design assessment is through studio review and taught courses are assessed by various forms of evidence-based interior design decisions and proposals. You will also carry out an in-depth research project into an area of your choice.

Student Destinations

On completing this course, you will be adept in spatial practice and able to work within your specialist discipline in design practices, architectural firms and cross-disciplinary environments. The creative skills, professional competencies and expansive learning environment that we provide has also led graduates into a range of careers in marketing, advertising, journalism, virtual design and modelling through to people-centred careers such as project management.

Learning, teaching & assessment

The modules in this programme are delivered with lectures, seminars and lab-based tutorials giving a good balance between scientific methodologies and hands-on practice.

Creativity will underpin much of the interactive work during this course. Developed ideas can be manufactured using a variety of techniques including the use of our range of Rapid – Prototyping equipment.

Modules are assessed mainly through coursework, although some modules may also have exams. The major project is assessed by dissertation and supporting design work. Examples of past major projects range from the development of innovative Rigging for Stunt Kite Boarding, Race Car Suspension using composite technologies with Innovative Designs to the use of Solar Energy to help cool domestic conservatories.

Personal development

This is an interactive course aimed to develop your knowledge and understanding of the changes, developments and potential opportunities that face us all in a Global economy. You will create and deliver a major project and develop effective research and specification skills.

Semester 1 modules will enable you to develop the knowledge, skills and expertise required for this level of work, as well as the opportunity to initiate the research for the major project idea. Semester 2 modules will enable you to extend your professional understanding and expertise through module coursework, individual projects and teamwork.

You will also make several individual presentations and get chance to hone your interview techniques.

Course Overview

The MA Product Design programme is about pushing the envelope of Product Design by educating the next generation of visionaries and implementers, who will embrace, reflect and address environmental, economic and social-cultural challenges through the medium of creative dialogue. An interdisciplinary approach is adopted, allowing the students the freedom to challenge conventions through cross collaborative experimentation and lateral thinking, with a goal of harnessing design ambiguity into a tangible outcome. You will explore the nature of human & product inter-relationships through self-expression and design focus by challenging the current conventional approach and proposing new paradigms for the design of innovative and sustainable products, systems or services. The modules will challenge and develop your critical design thinking and philosophical stance, acting as a platform for reflection in your development as a design.

This programme is delivered in the newly refurbished Alexandra Road building in the Swansea Arts Quarter, and during the course of your studies you will be supported by specialist staff, leading professionals and practicing artists through lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials. Assessment

The three main modes of assessment used on this programme are: studio projects, written assignments and seminar presentations The taught modules in Part 1 are assessed through a combination of these modes of assessment. Part 2 is assessed through the submission of either a practice biased project & report or a theoretical dissertation of not more than 15,000 words.

Assessment at postgraduate level is reflected by your ability to reformulate and use relevant methodologies and approaches to address problematic situations that involve many interacting factors. It includes taking responsibility for planning and developing courses of action that initiate or underpin substantial change or development, as well as exercising broad autonomy and judgement. The Product Design Enterprise MSc was developed to interest graduates from a business or design background. To enhance knowledge and understanding of the principles underlying professional product design, and enable the student to develop appropriate entrepreneurial skills enabling viable manufacturing, marketing or business enterprises.

The programme requires the student to undertake 10 taught modules and to complete a major project of approximately 15,000 words. Each taught module involves up to 22 contact hours per week, including lectures, tutorials, seminars and project classes. The course will run from October to September with examinations/assessments held in December and March/April. The Research Project explores fully the feasibility of the Major Project, which must be completed by early September.

Learning Teaching & Assessment

The modules in this programme are delivered with lectures, seminars and lab-based tutorials giving a good balance between scientific methodologies and hands-on practice.

Creativity will underpin much of the interactive work during this course. Developed ideas can be manufactured using a variety of techniques including the use of our range of Rapid – Prototyping equipment.

Modules are assessed mainly through coursework although some modules may also have exams. The major project is assessed by dissertation and supporting design work.

Examples of past major projects range from the development of innovative Rigging for Stunt Kite Boarding, Race Car Suspension using composite technologies with Innovative Designs to the use of Solar Energy to help cool domestic conservatories.
