Programme modules

- Manufacturing System and Process Modelling
The objective of this module is to provide an understanding of manufacturing and its management that recognises breadth and depth of required resources and information. This is done through developing an understanding of the hierarchy of computer based modelling relevant to manufacturing, ranging from the detail of material behaviour in processed parts, through macroscopic process models to the integration of processes within manufacturing systems and higher level business processes.

- Lean and Agile Manufacture
This module allows students to gain an understanding of lean and agile concepts in the manufacturing business, including its distribution chains. Students will learn to specify, design and evaluate an appropriate lean or agile business system.

- Engineering Management and Business Studies
The aim of the module is to introduce the concepts of management techniques that are applicable to running an engineering company. Students will learn to evaluate commercial risk, plan and organise engineering activities for improved company effectiveness and communicate technical and business information to ensure maximum impact.

- Product Information Systems – Product Lifecycle Management
The objectives of this module are for students to understand and critically evaluate the emerging product information systems for designers in the form of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems. Students will learn to use modern information and process modelling techniques to define the information integration and workflow requirements of a PLM configuration.

- The Innovation Process and Project Management
Students will establish a clear overview of the innovation process and an understanding of the essential elements within it. They will learn strategies for planning and carrying out innovative projects in any field.

- Sustainable Development: The Engineering Context
This module provides students with an understanding of the principles and practices of sustainable development and to provide them with an understanding of how engineers can help manufacturing businesses develop into more sustainable enterprises.

- Advanced Manufacturing Processes and Automation
Students will gain an in-depth knowledge of state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, processes and technologies. They will learn to understand and critically evaluate advanced manufacturing processes and technologies, assessing their advantages and disadvantages.

- Additive Manufacturing
The module will introduce and develop the concepts of Additive Manufacturing (AM) and demonstrate the different AM techniques available at Loughborough University. The module will emphasise the strengths and weaknesses of the various technologies and highlight applications and case studies from the AM industry.

- Projects
In addition to the taught modules, all students undertake an individual major project. Part-time students normally undertake a major project that is based on the needs of their employing company.

How you will learn

You will learn through a carefully balanced combination of lectures, in-class guided workshops, hands-on computer modelling and independent research. Following eight taught modules, students pursue an individual project typically based on the diverse range of industrially focused manufacturing research strengths within the School. Part time students may base their projects on particular needs of their current employer.

Examinations are in January and May / June with coursework throughout the programme. The project is assessed by written report, presentation and exhibition.

Careers and further study

Within national or multinational manufacturing industry companies working as a Manufacturing Engineer, Project Engineer, Systems Analyst or Software Development Specialist. Graduates may also study for an MPhil or PhD with the School’s research groups.

Scholarships

The University offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a country outside the European Union. These scholarships are to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.

This course aims to provide you with the inter-disciplinary knowledge, attributes and skills necessary to apply the principles of advanced manufacturing systems within the manufacturing industry. You will study several key topics and also complete a four-month individual project tailored to your individual interests that can take place in our own laboratories or, by agreement, in industry.

Here are the units you will study:

Integrated Manufacturing Systems: Systems concepts and techniques are developed in logistics and manufacturing areas with a strong emphasis on simulation techniques and practical case study analysis.

Operations and Quality Management: A strategic approach is used with modern inventory and supply chain management and logistics tools and techniques. Management strategies are developed for quality, including quality systems and quality control.

Advanced Materials: This unit is designed to deal with a wide range of advanced materials for engineering applications. Teaching will address analytical and numerical methods to assess the strength, stiffness, toughness, non-linearity behaviours, vibration and failures of engineering materials for component and structure design.

Supply Chain Management: Supply chain management involves the coordination of production, inventory, location and transportation, among participants in a supply chain. This unit considers the principles and tools of supply chain management, with an emphasis on lean six sigma methods.

Virtual Systems Design and Simulation for Production: This unit is particularly designed to enhance students’ analytical knowledge and practical skills focusing on a sustainable development of systematic approaches and lean production methods to support manufacturing systems analysis, design and performance evaluation with an aid of using advanced computer design and modelling simulation tools.

CAD/CAM Systems: An integrated approach is used towards CAD and CAM. Significant practical hands-on experience is given with commercial level software. Emphasis is placed on case study analysis and system selection and evaluation.

Individual Project: A strong feature that comprises a third of the course. You will be encouraged to undertake projects where possible in industrial companies. However, we also use our extensive resources and staff skills to undertake them within the University.

You will be taught through a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials (personal and academic), laboratory sessions and project work. The course has a strong practical emphasis with a significant amount of your time spent our laboratories. We pride ourselves on working at the leading-edge of technology and learning practices.

We use blended learning to teach this course, including:

• Guided learning, through lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops, visiting speakers, online resources and case studies. A lot of this is collaborative, through group projects, peer assessment and virtual communities including blogs, online discussions and peer-assisted learning.

• Independent study, so you acquire the knowledge to challenge existing perspectives and apply creative thinking and knowledge.

• Work-based learning, involving a six-week professional project.This allows you to apply your sustainability knowledge and skills to a project based with one of our professional partners or in your own workplace.

Business, society and policy makers are recognising that change is required at all levels of society if we are to address the challenge of sustainable energy and development that meets the needs of future generations.

You will complete the MSc by undertaking a research project on a topic of your choice, supervised by an experienced member of research staff.

Teaching and assessment

Full-time students attend for two days each week and receive formal lectures from experienced researchers and teaching staff, complemented by informal seminars and group discussions. Part-time students attend one day per week. You will also be expected to undertake self-directed study.

Distance learning students follow a structured study plan provided on the VLE, supported by discussion forums with other students, and email and telephone conversations with the module leader.

All assessment is by coursework. Each taught module has two items of coursework. The first is a smaller assignment, on which prompt feedback is given while the module is being studied. A second, major assignment is submitted after the material has been assimilated.

As well as the eight taught modules, students complete either an individual dissertation or a team-based design project, and all students get to attend the annual MSc conference, where final year students present.

Contact and learning hours

You will normally attend two-four hours of timetabled taught sessions each week for each module undertaken during term time; for full time study this would be 12 hours per week during term time. You can also expect to typically undertake a further hours of six hours independent study and assignments as required per week.

- Semester 1 (September to January):
The first semester consists of five taught compulsory units that provide you with a foundation in sustainability and systems analysis to apply throughout the programme.

The units advance your understanding of the concepts, technologies and issues in resource recovery, including the valorisation and the re-use of waste streams (waste2resource). You will examine in detail how resources can be conserved by transforming wastes and other feedstocks into high value products in the bioeconomy.

Each unit consists of lectures, tutorials and case studies, and is supplemented by private study and preparation for in-class activities.

Assessment is by a combination of coursework and examination.

- Semester 2 (February to May):
In the second semester you will take two further technical specialist units on resource conservation. These cover a range of advanced technologies and concepts, including process intensification and waste, water and energy integration.

You will also develop your understanding of Sustainable Chemical Engineering in a design, research and management context through three project-based units, focused on resource efficiency and conservation.

In the group activity, you will apply engineering and project management techniques to solve a design problem, just as an industry-based design team would.

Project unit 1 introduces you to research methods and project planning. You will then apply this to detailed background research in your discipline area to prepare for your individual summer dissertation project in Project unit 2.

Assessment is by a combination of coursework and examination.

- Semester 3 (June to September):
The final semester consists of an individual project leading to an MSc dissertation. Depending on your chosen area of interest, the project may involve theoretical, computational and/or experimental activities. You will conduct your individual project at Bath under the supervision of a member of academic staff, with opportunities for industrial co-supervision. You will have access to the state-of the-art facilities in the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Assessment is through a written dissertation and an oral presentation.


Facilities and equipment
The Department has a full range of research facilities with pilot plants for all major areas of research. Our analytical facilities include gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), UV-VIS, FTIR and Raman, photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS), microcalorimetry, adsorption measurement systems, surface and pore structure analysis systems and particle sizing equipment. Within the University, there is access to atomic force, scanning and transmission electron microscopes.

Sustainable engineering refers to the integration of social, environmental, and economic considerations into product, process, and energy system design methods. Additionally, sustainable engineering encourages the consideration of the complete product and process lifecycle during the design effort. The intent is to minimize environmental impacts across the entire lifecycle while simultaneously maximizing the benefits to social and economic stakeholders. The MS in sustainable engineering is multidisciplinary and managed by the industrial and systems engineering department.

The program builds on RIT’s work in sustainability research and education and offers students the flexibility to develop tracks in areas such as renewable energy systems, systems modeling and analysis, product design, and engineering policy and management. Course work is offered on campus and available on a full- or part-time basis.

Educational objectives

The program is designed to accomplish the following educational objectives:

- Heighten awareness of issues in areas of sustainability (e.g., global warming, ozone layer depletion, deforestation, pollution, ethical issues, fair trade, gender equity, etc.).

Plan of study

Technical in nature, the program equips engineers with the tools they need to meet the challenges associated with delivering goods, energy, and services through sustainable means. In addition to basic course work in engineering and classes in public policy and environmental management, students are required to complete a research thesis directly related to sustainable design challenges impacting society. Many thesis projects support the sustainability-themed research being conducted by RIT faculty in the areas of fuel-cell development, life-cycle engineering, and sustainable process implementation.

Students must successfully complete a total of 33 semester credit hours of course work comprised of five required core courses; two graduate engineering electives in an area of interest such as energy, modeling, manufacturing and materials, transportation and logistics, or product design and development; one social context elective; one environmental technology elective; two semesters of Graduate Seminar I, II (ISEE-795, 796); and a thesis. - Project
In addition to the taught modules, all students undertake an individual major project. Part-time students normally undertake a major project that is based on the needs of their employing company.

How you will learn

You will learn through a carefully balanced combination of lectures, in-class guided workshops, hands-on computer modelling and independent research.

The programme consists of eight, week-long, taught lecture modules plus project work. Each taught module is self-contained and covers a complete target. This programme is available in both full-time and part-time forms. Full-time students commence their studies on the first Monday in October for a period of 12 months. The programme provides a mix of design, operational and management skills, with particular emphasis on system and process engineering related to the production of basic energy carriers (electricity, heat and fuels) under tight environmental constraints. The six taught modules will have lectures and tutorials/practical work on a weekly basis. The expected timetable per module will be a total of 200 hours, which includes 40 hours of scheduled learning and teaching hours and 160 independent study hours.

Part Two will then take a further 15 weeks having a notional study time of 600 hours. During this time the student will be responsible for managing his/her time in consultation with an academic supervisor.

FULL-TIME MODE (JANUARY INTAKE)
For the January intake, students will study three specialist modules first during the second trimester from January to May. Other three common modules the students will study in the first trimester of the next academic year from September to January.

On successful completion of the taught element of the programme the students will be progressed to the Part Two, MSc dissertation to be submitted in April/May.

PART-TIME MODE
The taught element, part one, of the programmes will be delivered in two academic teaching years. 80 credits or equivalent worth of modules will be delivered in the first year and 40 credits or equivalent in the second year.

Course Content

The MSc is a one year full time course consisting of taught material and a substantial research project. Teaching is delivered by academic experts within the Department of Chemistry as well as external experts from other academic institutions and industry. The Teaching component of the course is delivered via a mix of lectures, workshops, seminars and practical work. You will learn about the key principles of green chemistry and the importance of sustainable technology in a variety of areas. In addition to this, you will also have the opportunity to enhance your transferable skills.

Assessment methods include a closed examination, written assignments, presentations, posters and practical work.

The MSc course has been running for over ten years over which time there has been a large increase in the range of nationalities represented. The content of the course is globally relevant and so attracts applications from around the world from people keen to develop their own knowledge to pass on when they return to their home country. Research Project

A key part of the MSc in Green Chemistry is the research project. The whole course is 180 credits and the research project accounts for 100 of these so is a very significant part of the programme.

Students are able to choose from a range of project areas in order to carry out research in their area of interest. Projects will be supervised by an academic member of staff, and may also involve collaboration with industry. Projects are chosen in the early stages of the course and you will be allocated to a PAG - Project Area Group - that corresponds with larger research projects that are currently taking place within the Green Chemistry Centre.

Projects can vary each year, but examples of recent MSc students' research includes:
-Production of natural flavours and fragrances using biocatalysis in scCO2
-Clean synthetic strategies for production of pharmaceuticals
-Extraction and utilisation of high value chemicals from food waste
-Starbon technology for catalysis
-Microwave assisted pyrolysis of wood pellets
-Bio-derived platform molecules

The research project module is assessed by a substantial written report by each student, a PAG report and an oral presentation on your individual research.

The Design and Manufacturing Engineering MSc develops your knowledge and skills in mechanical engineering as well as materials and manufacturing engineering. You have the opportunity to undertake in-depth studies through your research projects.

This one year course is intended for honours graduates (or an international equivalent) in mechanical or mechanical-related engineering, maths, physics or a related discipline, eg automotive, aeronautical or design.

A two year MSc is also available for non-native speakers of English that includes a Preliminary Year.

The taught part of the course consists of major engineering themes such as:
-Sustainable energy management
-Manufacturing materials and processes
-Engineering design
-Computational methods
-Engineering software

Your project is chosen from an extensive range of subjects. Project work can range from fundamental studies in areas of basic engineering science to practical design, make and test investigations.

Recent areas for project work include:
-Design and manufacture
-Thermo-fluid dynamics
-Composite materials
-Bioengineering and biomaterials
-Microelectronic-mechanical systems
-Mathematical and computational engineering modelling

Some research may be undertaken in collaboration with industry.

The course is delivered by the School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering. The School has an established programme of research seminars. These are delivered by guest speakers from academia and industry (both national and international), providing excellent insights into a wide variety of engineering research.

Effective communication is an important skill for the modern professional engineer. This course includes sessions to help develop your ability, both through formal guidance sessions dedicated to good practice in report writing, and through oral/poster presentations of project work.

Delivery

The taught component of the course makes use of a combination of lectures, tutorials/labs and seminars. Assessment is by written examination and submitted in-course assignments.

The research project (worth 60 credits) is undertaken throughout the duration of the Masters course. Project work is assessed by dissertation and oral/poster presentations. You will be allocated, and meet regularly with, project supervisors.

Accreditation

The courses have been accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council.

Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).

An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

Facilities

The School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering is based in the Stephenson Building. It has both general and specialist laboratories and workshop facilities. These are used for training, course delivery and the manufacture of materials/components needed to support project work.

The Stephenson Building houses one of the largest networked computer clusters on campus (120+ PCs), which supports all of the specialist software introduced and used within the course (eg CAD, stress analysis, fluid dynamics, signal processing packages) in addition to the School’s own cluster (60+ PCs) used for instrumentation and data acquisition laboratories.
