The MSc in Sustainable Urbanism has been designed to bring together urban sustainability theory, policy and design in a ground-breaking programme which is not offered anywhere else in the UK. It is intended for those interested in a career in built environment related professions with a focus on urban sustainability/sustainable development and takes a multidisciplinary approach.

About this degree

This MSc offers urban professionals a theoretical understanding of the range of disciplines that together contribute to the delivery of sustainable urbanism, and explores the conceptual and technical skills necessary to create sustainable urban environments. The programme includes an integral field trip which offers students the opportunity to observe and consider sustainability in practice.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of six core modules (90 credits), optional modules (30 credits) and a research project (60 credits).

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through theoretical discussions, focused case study methods and hands-on project work. It includes an integral field trip to an overseas location, including site visits, field exercises and guest lectures. Assessment is through individual and group work, essays, examination, skills-based practical work, and the personal project.

Graduate students from The Bartlett School of Planning have been very successful in gaining subsequent employment. At present there is a growing demand for our Master's graduates from a wide range of both public and private employers around the world. While a main source of employment remains in local government and central government planning and in planning-related consultancy (Arup, Aecom, BioRegional, WWF, Future of London, etc), graduates are also employed in the housing and transport sectors; planning, urban regeneration and environmental agencies; public and private utility companies; urban design consultancy (various planning, engineering and architecture firms); and teaching and research.

Whatever your background, this course, which is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), will equip you with the knowledge to become a competent and resourceful professional, ready to go straight into a career as a Surveyor in the fast-paced property market.

There is some £680 billion invested in UK commercial property stock and just over half of this is held as investment assets. Within the residential sector, the private rented sector alone has a value of £840 billion. These real estate assets all require on-going strategic and active management.

Real Estate investment is a global trend and as such there are opportunities to work across the world, particularly within the multinational practices.

You will develop your ability to analyse, assess and synthesise solutions to problems and gain an understanding of the business drivers and constraints that influence these solutions. Your communication skills will also be developed, giving you the confidence you need to interact with clients and fellow industry professionals.

Our accreditation means this qualification meets their academic requirements, putting you well on your way to Chartered status. You can obtain full Chartered status following a period of work experience after graduation and on successful completion of the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC).

Based over one year, the course will involve lectures, tutorials and independent study. Students will undertake three taught modules in Trimesters 1 and 2 of the academic year, and complete their dissertation in the final trimester.

Students can start the course in September or January (January starts will complete in 18 months rather than one year due to the summer break between the teaching trimesters for the course). This course can also be studied part time and by distance learning.

The world's oceans and seas are crucial to sustaining life on Earth. They can reduce poverty, ensure food security, and address equity issues. This means we must understand the relationship between the International Law of the Sea and other elements of international law concerning sustainable development. 

The International Law of the Sea is always developing. At the moment, negotiations are ongoing in New York, for instance, towards the development of a new legally-binding instrument on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction. 

This course focuses on the interface between the International Law of the Sea and other areas of international law. These areas include international biodiversity; human rights; trade; and investment law. It'll give you the knowledge and skills you need to understand ocean governance and all it contains. You'll receive advanced, specialised and comprehensive knowledge of the science, policy and international law of ocean governance. You'll also learn about other areas of international law related to sustainable development. You'll build upon your analytical skills to understand and contribute to the ongoing development and implementation of the International Law of the Sea. Upon graduating from this course, you'll be able to take part in international negotiations of the Law of the Sea and other related processes.

Learning & teaching

The blended-learning format of this course comprises two intensive residential sessions in Scotland and distance-learning sessions online.

The first residential session takes place during the second week of October (allowing you to conduct preparatory readings during the month of September), and the second residential in early January. During the residential sessions, teaching is conducted in a seminar style. Students will be provided with a reading list and a set of questions to prepare prior to each seminar. Guest speakers will act as facilitators of discussion among students. Seminars are complemented by individual and group presentations and exercises; “lounge sessions” to discuss informally with global experts current challenges in the field of oceans governance and sustainable development, and the status of ongoing international negotiations; and social and professional networking activities.

The distance-learning component of the programme will engage students in further readings to deepen students’ knowledge on specific areas addressed during the residential sessions, online discussion forums and a variety of skill-enhancing exercises, with the continuous support of the programme directors.

Assessment

Assessment takes a variety of forms to hone different skills: coursework assignments, including essays, group discussions and presentations. Some of the assessments will be based on real-life assignments that the teaching staff have engaged within the context of their practical experience in international consultancies, with a view to developing and enhancing students’ skills of immediate relevance to global employers. The planning process makes provision for the needs of households and the requirements of the economy, and planning aims to mitigate the adverse impacts of development upon our natural environment.

The planning system is currently undergoing change to be better able to address the challenges of competitiveness and sustainability. There is a pressing requirement in both the public and private sectors for planners with appropriate understanding and skills to plan for development and protect the environment.

The University is a long-established provider of planning education. MSc Spatial Planning will be attractive to individuals with a real interest in tackling the challenges of important urban planning issues; MSc Spatial Planning with Sustainable Urban Design is designed to equip graduates with the professional skills for resolving environmental, economic, social, cultural and spatial dimensions in designing for sustainable development.

Spatial Planning is concerned with creating sustainable places. Planners achieve this in a number of ways:

Planners work with building firms and housing organisations to help make available sites addressing the housing needs of local areas. They meet with local communities to learn about their concerns and to discuss ways of tackling issues such as the protection of homes from flood risk. They provide guidance on how to promote quality in the design of places and buildings.

Planning makes possible investment in sustainable economic development. Through preparing medium and long-term plans, planners ensure that land is available for development within and around our cities and towns. Planners often lead on regeneration projects and work in partnership with engineers to bring forward the infrastructures necessary to relieve transport congestion and to provide for long-term energy solutions.

Climate change is making achieving sustainability increasingly important. Planners, work with the environmental agencies and with conservation interests to ensure that the potential environmental impacts arising from development proposals are first established and then they use planning powers to promote a sustainable balance between social and economic development and the protection of the environment.

Who becomes a planning student?

Spatial Planning is a multi-disciplinary activity and attracts a wide mix of graduates. Often these are geography graduates, but increasingly graduates with social science, law, architecture and surveying degrees, as well as graduates from the environmental sciences find that Spatial Planning makes use of their knowledge and training.

Aims of the Programme

The Spatial Planning programmes are designed to provide the knowledge, skills and understanding required for graduates wishing to enter into professional careers in urban planning and development.

Programme Content

Semester 1:
Spatial Analysis has two key components. The first component analyses built and natural environments particularly from a conservation perspective. The second part of the module focuses on socio-economic analysis of data at a city scale and the relevance of this to planning.

Statutory Planning. is a practice based approach to learning processes processes of plan-making and the management of development.Property Development Processes deals with complexities and challenges in the property development sector and the role of different stakeholders involved.

Semester 2:
Concepts of spatial planning introduces students to the role of planning and planning systems. The other part of this module introduces students to various planning theories and their relevance to practice..

Sustainability in Contemporary Cities examines various challenges facing the growth of cities globally and the implications of these to planning of cities and the countryside.

The third second semester module is optional depending on the selected specialism. Students select one specialist module from the following:

Methods of Assessment

Assessment methods cover a mix of formats including 'live' project-work and a research project. There are no written examinations. The educational aims are to develop subject understanding and to equip students with research and practice skills. Assignments call for visioning, problem-solving, forward-planning and critical reflection. Assignments are informed by students making effective use of available literature, conducting investigations and accessing sources of data. Attention is paid to building the effective communication and partnering skills vital for practicing professional planners.

The course provides you with the skills and understanding to become a leader in the design and delivery of sustainable city strategies.

Over half the world’s population now live in cities. Achieving sustainable futures for urban centres is a growing issue. You’ll develop a full understanding of how cities work and acquire the tools to:

  • re-design city systems

Learning & teaching

In semester 1 and 2, the course is delivered through lectures, seminars, tutorials and skills-based workshops. In many of these core classes, there is also strong emphasis on group project work.

During the summer, you’ll undertake two project placements with different organisations – whether in industry, business, academia, government or other organisations working on urban sustainability problems and solutions.

Assessment

The core classes of the programme are assessed through a variety of methods, including written assignments and coursework, presentations and both group and individual project work. Depending on the electives chosen, you may also be assessed by exam.

Transformative Projects runs in place of a traditional dissertation. You’ll write a detailed project report for each placement, and will also produce a critical reflection on your professional skills development across both projects.

The philosophy of this programme is based on a flexible approach to problem solving and the development of analytical faculties, while the structure offers flexibility and a range of optional subjects. How this course helps you develop

The Real Estate and Land Policy Group brings together expertise on a wide range of topics relating to the operation of land and property markets, real estate development and land and housing policy. The construction industry is a large employer, with over 100 million people worldwide believed to depend on it. The resulting built environment accounts for nearly 50% of carbon emissions as it consumes an equal percentage of extracted, natural materials generating large quantities of landfill waste and using vast amount of water, all valuable and increasingly scarce resources.

Course Overview

UK construction is well-placed to benefit from the opportunities presented by the global shift to a low carbon economy and green construction, but there is a continuing need to ensure investment in innovation and technology alongside increased collaboration between businesses and research institutions to enable the UK to realise this potential. There is also scope for further progress, particularly with regard to addressing evident skills shortages. The global green and sustainable building industry is forecast to grow at an annual rate of 22.8% between now and 2017 as a result of increasing low carbon regulatory requirements and greater societal demand for greener products. It seems that the market is recognising these opportunities.

According to recent research by McGraw-Hill Construction (2013), around half the architects, engineers, contractors, building owners and building consultants around the world anticipate that at least 60% of their work will be green by 2015, up from 28% of firms in 2012 and only 13% in 2009.

The UK’s existing housing stock, which accounts for over half of the greenhouse gas emissions from the built environment, presents growth and development opportunities for the UK’s low carbon and sustainable construction market.

The programme will draw upon subject expertise within the School of Architecture, Built and Natural Environments, which has been commended by Externals for its commitment to innovative teaching and learning. The programme enhances a number of advanced transferable skills and equips the student with a range of skills appropriate for a broad variety of future opportunities as well as providing skills and competencies for those students who are progressing to MPhil / PhD. Regularly, our MSc students have progressed to our PhD provision. Sustainability is seen as a priority in construction circles; the very nature of its operation places a heavy burden on the environment. The programme holds firm the sustainability concept and provides students with ‘real’ examples of established practices.

The School of Built and Natural Environment prides itself on providing a supportive learning environment, with personal attention afforded to all students. Delivering a successful and enjoyable learning experience is at the very core of our vision to produce first class professionals.

Assessment

Assessments used within this Programme are normally formative or summative. In the former assessment is designed to ensure students become aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Typically, such assessment will take the form of practical exercises where a more hands-on approach shows student’s ability on a range of activities. Traditional formal time-constrained assessment is by means of tests and examinations, normally of two-hour duration. Examinations are a traditional method of verifying that the work produced is the students’ own work.

To help authenticate student coursework, some modules require that the student and lecturer negotiate the topic for assessment on an individual basis, allowing the lecturer to monitor progress. Some modules where the assessment is research-based require students to verbally/visually present the research results to the lecturer and peers, followed by a question and answer session. Such assessment strategies are in accord with the learning and teaching strategies employed by the team, that is, where the aim is to generate work that is mainly student-driven, individual, reflective and where appropriate, vocationally-orientated. Feedback to students will occur early in the study period and continue over the whole study session thereby allowing for greater value added to the student’s learning.

Career Opportunities

The MSc is widely recognised as a valuable postgraduate qualification. It demonstrates the student’s ability to commit to a programme of study and develop their knowledge within that area of academic study. The programme will help develop skills which are valuable to a wide range of employers, such as the ability to analyse complex information critically, the ability to present clear and coherent arguments and the ability to present complex information in a clear manner.

Such an education will develop an awareness of the interconnectedness of the built environment, and equip the student with a qualification relevant to a number of different vocational situations. The flexibility of the modular programme enables students to develop packages of study which satisfy specialist interests and career aspirations in the built environment.

In business many large organisations have established management systems and auditing procedures, and our former students’ career paths demonstrate opportunities at all levels of management. This degree, which was developed in consultation with the BRE and major Companies/Consultants, will help students develop a career in these areas. In fact, the integral link with the BRE is a fundamental ‘kitemark’ for students and associated employers of this programme.

The School has a long history of industrial liaison. Since the 1990s programmes have had annual industrial liaison meetings. Feedback on new policies, initiatives and issues informed the curriculum, teaching and practice, especially when providing valuable input prior to validation (in particular BRE). The links will also provide experience for students to work on ‘live’ projects.

Recommendations by BRE on the content of the proposed programme(s) include:
-Providing students with the opportunity to work on interdisciplinary projects with students pursuing other construction-related qualifications, for example, architects, surveyors, civil engineers, quantity surveyors, planners and tradespeople; this approach would simulate real-life construction projects
-Enabling students to gain practical experience, thus applying the theory they have learnt

These types of industrially-centred learning provide the opportunity to inform teaching, learning and assessment adding much value to employability.

The course is intended to provide students with a detailed understanding of the sustainability issues associated with Northern European agriculture, and is underpinned by an extensive programme of agri-environment research at Harper Adams.

Having completed the MSc you will be able to identify farming systems and determine their key characteristics, and critically evaluate the environmental impacts of conventional, integrated and organic farming systems. You will also learn to assess and exploit the latest developments in technology, and produce integrated farm management solutions that pay due regard to agronomic, social and environmental requirements.

The course

The continuing production of safe, wholesome food in an environmentally sensitive manner is a major political issue for national governments and internationally within global commodity markets. A report produced by the UK Cabinet Office in 2008 (Food Matters: Towards a Strategy for the 21st Century) predicts that the global population will rise to 9 billion by 2050 rising from a current estimate of nearly 6.8Bn. This increase in population size will substantially increase the demand for food. The global estimates vary in magnitude, but it is thought approximately 25% of crops are lost to pests and diseases, such as insects, fungi and other plant pathogens (FAO Crop Prospects and Food Situation 2009)

In a 2009 response to the emerging issues centred on global food security, the UK BBRSC launched a consultation exercise entitled Future Directions in Research Relating to Food Security. In seeking responses as to the direction of future research BBSRC identified a number of key themes. These included the:
■ Translation of research into commercial practice and the creation of effective partnerships to enable exchange of knowledge and development of skills in the uptake of new scientific findings
■ Establishment of require long-term programmes in research and training, underpinned by investment in the agricultural research infrastructure
■ Focus on applying the latest science to increasing crop and animal productivity globally while minimising negative environmental impact (including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving the efficient use of water, energy and other inputs, conserving biodiversity and landscapes), reducing losses from pests and diseases, enhancing food safety and quality for improved nutrition, and reducing waste throughout the food supply chain.

This course is intended to provide students with a key understanding of the issues involved in the sustainable production of food in accordance with the themes outlined above and is underpinned by an extensive programme of associated research at Harper Adams.

How will it benefit me?

The course provides an overview of the key issues involved in sustainable agricultural production within a global context. Since there is a focus on the underlying scientific principles, the course is suited to students of all nationalities in addition to those from the UK. Initially, you will learn to identify global farming systems and determine their key characteristics, before undertaking more complex evaluations of conventional and integrated or organic farming systems. You will undertake training in the use of the latest resources and use these to produce global integrated farm management solutions that pay due regard to agronomic, social, economic and environmental requirements. You will also have the option of undertaking a case study module where you will be able to focus exclusively on farming system of relevance to your background or intended career destination. The research project will provide training in the design, execution, analysis and interpretation of appropriate experiments or surveys to address research questions or problems relevant to sustainable agriculture.
