The course offers a broad curriculum covering sustainability theory, sustainable urban development, low carbon and renewable energy systems, green infrastructure, natural resource management, health and liveability, transport and mobility, big data analytics and smart technologies.

Course content

The Dual Master's in Sustainable Smart Cities is delivered via ten modules:

Principles of Sustainable Development (UAB)
Drivers of sustainable smart cities (i.e. climate change, population growth, resource scarcity, etc) and the principles of sustainable development.

Introduction to Sustainable Smart Cities (SU)
Sustainable urban planning and smart growth, engaging with smart citizens, sustainable governance and creating sustainable economic development.

Low carbon and renewable energy technologies, renewable energy integration and smart grids.

Managing Natural Resources and Sustainable Smart Cities (SU)

Green Buildings (UAB)

Both of the streams within this MSc programme take a radical, hands-on approach by linking traditional teaching intimately to near-real life highway and railway engineering problems. It provides the technical knowledge and skills to develop the analytical, decision-making and critical powers required to solve, in a sustainable way, genuine, practical highway and railway engineering problems. This MSc aims to equip participants to work effectively as development practitioners in urban contexts through a deeper understanding of the processes that generate urban change. All MSc students submit a 10,000-word report on a topic related to the main themes of the programme. The topic can be chosen to enhance career development or for its inherent interest.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, group work, workshops and field trips. Field trips so far have taken place in Egypt, Ghana, India, Thailand, and Tanzania. Student performance is assessed through essays, coursework, team project reports, written examinations, the overseas field trip and a 10,000-word dissertation.

This MSc is widely recognised by international organisations and agencies (such as UN agencies and the World Bank) and bilateral aid organisations from different countries. The rapidly developing world and evolution of urban development have caused a massive surge in environmental pollution, energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Civil engineers should take a leadership role to promote sustainable development by providing creative and innovative solutions to the challenges associated with sustainability in civil engineering practices.

This programme provides students with technologically advanced knowledge, problem-solving skills and a comprehensive understanding of the key aspects of sustainability in civil engineering construction. It has a particular emphasis on the future trends of global sustainable development. It is intended to provide critical awareness of current and future problems associated with the intervention of sustainability strategies and their integration in the civil engineering sector, as well as prospective solutions from existing and emerging scientific technologies.

This full-time 18-month programme comprises two semesters of taught modules, assessed by coursework and examination, followed by a research dissertation during your third semester. Sustainable Solutions for Construction

Civil engineering plays a dominant role in providing sustainable solutions to the construction industry. This programme focusses on all of the technologies, techniques and methods that will enable future civil engineers to incorporate an environmentally viable approach to the design of future infrastructure. These designs will be based on renewable energies, recycling of waste construction materials and industrial by-products, smart systems for the efficient drainage and utilisation of surface water run-offs, natural wastewater treatment methods as well as modern digital representation techniques and structural models.

What are my career prospects?

Graduates of this programme will be equipped to take up professional employment in the civil engineering industry and become lifelong learners with an appreciation of the value to society of an education in sustainable construction. The aims of this module are for the student to understand: the range of infrastructure needs for affected communities during and following emergencies; the range of suitable technologies for water supply and engineering management of liquid and solid wastes during and following emergencies; and the links between human health, water, and waste management.

The aim of this module is for participants to develop a broad understanding of both the needs for and the mechanisms of environmental assessment and management, with emphasis on aquatic environments, in low and middle-income countries.

The aim of this module is for participants to understand the concepts used in integrated planning and management of water resources in low and middle-income countries.

The aim of this module is to better enable participants to plan for and manage urban water and sanitation services in developing countries.

Facilities

Distance Learning students study from home but are welcome to visit the Loughborough campus. They can make remote use of the University Library’s electronic search facilities. They can also remotely access the WEDC ‘Knowledge Base’, which has links to many sources of useful and relevant information.

Facilities on campus include our laboratory which houses equipment for field sampling and analysis of water and wastewater, and some of the largest hydraulics equipment in the UK. Although Distance Learners will not normally have access to this equipment they can ask the advice of laboratory staff if they are carrying out fieldwork as part of their dissertation.

How you will learn

Distance Learning students study from home but are welcome to visit the Loughborough campus. They can make remote use of the University Library’s electronic search facilities and the WEDC ‘Knowledge Base’, which has links to many sources of useful and relevant information.

The programme comprises both compulsory core modules, and optional modules which may be selected. The Case Study module draws together material from across the programme. A research dissertation between 75 and 150 pages long on a chosen topic relevant to interests or career development concludes the programme. Many of the Distance Learning modules have web-based discussion forums, where Distance Learners can choose to interact with each other and Module Tutors.

The method of delivery for the learning materials is mainly portable and paper-based, to suit students who are living or working in areas of the world with poor internet connectivity, or those who travel frequently. We also arrange some webinars which are recorded for students who are unable to participate.

During the programme students build up an excellent library of well-produced bound module notes, additional resources and relevant text books. In addition to the printed version we are developing and planning to provide e-reader versions of some module notes to enhance portability.

- Assessment
For most modules, students are assessed by two written assessments (three items for core modules). The individual research dissertation module is assessed on the basis of a written dissertation and an oral when a student discusses their submitted dissertation with their supervisor and a second member of staff. For students who cannot visit the UK this oral takes place over Skype.

Careers and further study

Many WEDC students and alumni work for international NGOs (MSF, Oxfam, SCF, GOAL, WaterAid, etc.) and agencies (such as UNICEF), or National Governments. Distance Learning students already working in these sectors find their new skills to be directly relevant and readily applicable to their jobs.
Graduate job titles include WASH Coordinator, WASH Engineer, Emergency WASH Manager, Technical Adviser and Project Manager.

Environmental and Infrastructure Planning (EIP) focuses on the sustainable planning of infrastructure. It does so from a spatial planning perspective. This means that you will not only explore infrastructure planning, realization and management concerning roads, utilities and water systems; you will also learn about the relationship between societal and political processes.

The Master's degree focuses on students with an academic interest in designing policy solutions for problems in the field of environment, such as climate change. It will also give you the chance to learn more about issues concerning water, like flooding, and infrastructure project, for example the growth of mobility. The programme emphasizes the integration of technical knowledge with knowledge of planning and planning processes.

The interdisciplinary character of EIP is reflected in the contents of its curriculum. Several courses will strengthen your knowledge of issues in EIP and the tools you use in this discipline. This module provides the necessary knowledge and skills to analyse the technical performance, environmental impact and economic feasibility of a variety of solar and wind powered systems. The module provides a systematic understanding of current knowledge, and a critical awareness of current problems and new insights at the forefront of professional practice; train students to evaluate critically current research and advanced scholarship in the field of solar and wind power; enables students to evaluate solar and wind power technologies, develop critiques of them and, where appropriate, to propose novel solutions.

- Renewable energy technologies 2
The module provides the necessary knowledge and skills to analyse the technical performance, environmental impact and economic feasibility of a number renewable energy technologies such as fuel cells, biofuels, geothermal, and micro-hydropower systems.

- Energy resource and use analysis
This module is designed to develop strategic and operational management skills in the fields of infrastructure asset management and project appraisal. It covers design life extensions, risk and asset management techniques for infrastructure, and techniques for physical appraisal of infrastructure, and their economic, environmental and social impacts.

- Electrical power
The module covers electrical power engineering as applied to the design of systems in buildings. In particular, this includes the connection of, and the effects of, small-scale embedded generation as might be employed to exploit renewable energy sources. The module aims to provide appreciation and understanding of electrical services design in buildings with particular reference to safety requirements and the effects of embedded generation on the supplier and the consumer.

- Sustainable refrigeration
The module introduces the principles of thermodynamics, and applies them to the study and design of energy efficient refrigeration systems. Vapour compression, absorption and other novel cycles are analysed and modelled Practical applications of sustainable refrigeration are investigated through case studies.

- Environmental management
The module is designed to develop understanding of the way in which human social and economic activities impact on the environment. The emphasis is on how managers can assess and influence the environmental impact of their particular organisation, with reference to key technologies and the political and legal constraints within which organisations must operate.

Spatial Planning is a multi-disciplinary activity and attracts a wide mix of graduates. Methods of Assessment

Assessment methods cover a mix of formats including 'live' project-work and a research project. There are no written examinations. The educational aims are to develop subject understanding and to equip students with research and practice skills. Assignments call for visioning, problem-solving, forward-planning and critical reflection. Assignments are informed by students making effective use of available literature, conducting investigations and accessing sources of data. Attention is paid to building the effective communication and partnering skills vital for practicing professional planners.

Learning & teaching

In semester 1 and 2, the course is delivered through lectures, seminars, tutorials and skills-based workshops. In many of these core classes, there is also strong emphasis on group project work.
During the summer, you’ll undertake two project placements with different organisations – whether in industry, business, academia, government or other organisations working on urban sustainability problems and solutions.

Contamination of soil and water, lack of access to drinking water, and unsustainable use of land and water resources remain major obstacles to global sustainability, while new challenges include threats from climate change and rapid urbanisation.

Programme description

Infrastructure and environmental engineering is an interdisciplinary field that includes; traffic and road engineering, urban metabolism, water system engineering, engineering geology, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering and sustainability.

Investments in infrastructure also form a considerable part of the global economy. Hence safe, economic and sustainable development requires continued progress in civil engineering with a specialisation towards infrastructure and environment.

To meet this societal need for qualified competence in planning, design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure systems in soil and water, this programme promotes the personal development of knowledge, skills and attitudes that are needed to start working as a professional engineer in the field of infrastructure and environmental engineering. Our Masters in Sustainable Building Design (MSc SBD) programme is aimed at graduates of architecture, design or planning subjects who wish to further develop their design skills to combine sustainability and low carbon technologies in building design and renovation. Participants in this programme will enhance their design skills with specialist technical knowledge, and develop multidisciplinary understanding, via a curriculum of applied, engaged and contemporary courses. You will learn to harness technology to deliver optimal solutions, balancing the individual competing needs for environmental, economic, social and cultural sustainability.

Flexible study options

This programme can be studied full-time, part-time or via Independent Distance Learning (IDL), ideal for those in employment or with other commitments, providing flexible study options that fit around work or family. As an IDL student you will not be required to attend any lectures, tutorials or other events at any of Heriot-Watt University’s campuses, and you can also arrange to sit examinations in a location close to you.

Those who are close to our Dubai Campus will, in addition, benefit from our local support in the form of dissertation supervision and access to licensed software programmes and subscribed literatures, depending on availability.

Professional recognition

Heriot-Watt's Sustainable Building Design MSc has been accredited as a further learning programme at the postgraduate level to meet the academic requirement for Chartered Engineers (CEng, UK) by both the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and the Energy Institute (EI) and also for Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv UK) by the Energy Institute.

English language requirements

If English is not the applicant’s first language a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is required with all elements passed at 6.0 or above.

Applicants who have previously successfully completed programmes delivered in the medium of English language may be considered and will be required to provide documentary evidence of this. Examples would be secondary school education or undergraduate degree programme. A minimum of at least one year of full time study (or equivalent) in the medium of English language will be required.

Over half of the world’s population now lives in urban areas and the sustainable development of our cities poses key challenges for urban management. There is a need to deliver sustainability while ensuring managed urban environments can adapt to a changing climate and changing economic and social conditions.

This programme focuses on analysing the issues of, and the tools used to address and deliver, sustainable development across the globe, from the scale of the building right up to the regional and national scale. It is designed to equip urban managers and leaders with an academically rigorous and professionally relevant postgraduate qualification relating to changing global circumstances.

About the programme

The programme consists of five mandatory taught courses and three optional taught courses, to complete a Post Graduate Diploma. MSc students must also complete a research dissertation.
