With increasing recognition of the impact of a world living beyond its means, the commitment to sustainable development in order to meet the needs of present generations without jeopardising those of future generations, has never been more apparent.

The MSc in Leadership for Sustainable Development will be of direct relevance to those who wish to develop the skills to make a difference in building a sustainable society. It is of direct relevance to recent graduates as well as those working in sectors dealing with sustainability.

AIM

This innovative programme has been designed in consultation with employers and academics to provide students with:

• in-depth understanding of the theory and practice of leadership in the context of sustainable development and an ability to identify and critically evaluate the role of leadership for sustainable development within a range of organisational contexts

• knowledge of the principles and core themes associated with sustainable development and an ability to critically evaluate best practice within a range of organisational sectors

• an ability to apply knowledge and skills gained from the programme in order to positively contribute to the sustainable development agenda through research projects

• competence in employability skills that will facilitate a professional approach to the work environment

STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

Course Content
The innovative programme embraces action based learning, facilitated through a series of work placements and group project to foster critical thinking and promote the use of initiative for problem solving and decision making. The course is a full time programme comprising seven modules over twelve months.

The course structure is as follows:

Semester 1:

• Leadership for Sustainable Development: to explore theories and practices of leadership in the context of sustainable development

• Foundations for Sustainable Development:1 to consider core themes underpinning sustainable development

• Foundations for Sustainable Development:2 to consider policies and strategies for sustainable development



Semesters 2 & 3:

• Sustainable Development in NGOs (Placement 1): to provide experiences of sustainable development and leadership in Non Governmental Organisations

• Sustainable Development in Governance (Placement 2): to provide experiences of sustainable development and leadership in Governance

• Sustainable Development in Business (Placement 3): to provide experiences of sustainable development and leadership in Business

• Effective Leadership: Group Project: to engage in a project to promote sustainable development through ‘experiential learning’.
Assessment

A range of assessment methods are used including research projects, group work, presentations, reports and essays, exam and seminar contribution.

CAREERS IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Graduates from this programme have developed successful careers upon completion of the MSc in Leadership for Sustainable Development. For example, past students have gone on to gain relevant employment with a range of organisations in the public, private and non-governmental organisations sectors. These include the Sustainable Development Commission NI, Action Renewables, the Environment and Heritage Service, Northern Ireland Environment Link, NIE Supply, George Best Belfast City Airport, the United Nations and the Consumer Council in Northern Ireland.

The success of the MSc Leadership for Sustainable Development programme was recently recognised when the course was highly commended in the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) Green Gown Awards 2006-7.

This programme is run by the Centre for Environmental Strategy (CES) – a leading centre for environmental and sustainability-related research and postgraduate teaching.

CES accommodates a wide range of disciplines dedicated to resolving environmental problems, and this Masters programme prepares a new generation of environment and sustainability professionals for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Programme overview

This programme equips you with the tools essential for analysis of the relationship between environmental issues and human society, in order to make informed decisions. As part of this approach, you will evaluate political, socio-economic, ethical, cultural and regulatory frameworks.

You will acquire a sensitive appreciation of issues surrounding sustainable development and an understanding of the theory and application of sustainable development.

This programme provides a route to graduate membership of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment.

Programme structure

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year and part-time students must study at least two taught technical modules per academic year. It consists of eight taught modules and a dissertation.

Guest lecturers

Several high-profile guest lecturers have assisted with the delivery of some of the modules. CES modules make maximum use of guest lecturers, drawing on the practical skills and experience of key experts from government and industry to complement the theoretical components of the modules offered.

For example, Jonathon Porritt, former chairman of the Sustainable Development Commission, gives a guest lecture on the Sustainable Development Applications module, analysing the standing of sustainable development in business and policy making.

The extensive expertise of CES academics and researchers is also drawn upon in modules. Professor Tim Jackson, advisor to the government and international bodies and author of the seminal book, Prosperity without Growth – economics for a finite planet– also lectures on some CES modules.

Industrial placement

Full-time students are able to undertake an industrial placement module which enables them to spend six to twelve weeks working for a company or NGO, doing the type of work they will aim to find on graduation.

This programme is aimed at students who wish to pursue a career in agriculture and sustainable development in the private sector, research, NGO or government communities. It provides a firm grounding in research methods applicable to the study of sustainable agriculture and the intellectual tools for understanding sustainable agriculture systems. The courses combine theoretical approaches and empirically based learning from case studies of real projects and agricultural scenarios.

Teaching will focus on case studies from NRI's corporate experience of looking at how research into agricultural issues, both in the natural and social sciences, can be translated into knowledge and products that have real impact on increasing the effectiveness of agriculture in delivering food security and enhancing livelihoods for all stakeholders. What opportunities might it lead to?

On graduating from this degree, students will be exempt from all five Certificate Level papers of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). Additionally, CIMA's 'Gateway' route would offer MSc Accounting and Finance graduates the opportunity to sit one paper which is a combination of their Management level papers P2, F2 and E2. Successful completion of this exam would exempt students from all of CIMA's Operational level and Certificate level papers.

For the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), we currently have exemptions from Fundamentals Level papers F1 - F4.

You will study a total of five units which incorporate a range of topics covering financial accounting and corporate governance, strategic management accounting, investment strategies and business valuation. We will also guide you in applying sophisticated forecasting techniques to help you understand and anticipate business trends. The increasing drive towards low carbon and sustainable solutions in the built environment has introduced a need for built environment professionals who can take a holistic view of the sustainability debate. This programme will combine the technical design and engineering issues associated with the delivery of sustainable built environments with an appreciation for how such approaches can be justified in a commercially focused world. The programme considers passive (building fabric) and active measures (building services and renewable energy technologies) setting out what approach may be taken when considering new build or, as is becoming increasingly important the existing building stock. Students will gain the skills needed to assess these options on a whole life basis with an appreciation for how the financial and business case can be made for such approaches. The programme is closely linked with the schools Sustainable Built Environments Research Group (SBERG) and will be informed by the cutting edge research carried out by the group considering technical, behavioural and social issues associated with the delivery of sustainable built environments. The University of Greenwich is a Passive House Examination Centre and students can gain extra certification as a Passive House Designer/Consultant by taking the programme.

The university has invested £76 million in a new building to house the campus library, TV studios and academic facilities for disciplines including architecture, design and construction. Format

The course is divided into three components, which students must pass independently:

The first of these is a core programme of lectures which all students take, and this focuses on developing a breadth of skills and understanding which complement the technical background of participants.

The second component comprises four elective modules from a list of around 30 topics offered by the Centre for Sustainable Development, the Engineering Department and other Departments within the University. All students also study the Management of Technology and Innovation course led by the Judge Business School; this course comprises both evening lectures, and a group in-company consultancy project working on a real area of concern for the client.

The final component is undertaken between April and August when students complete an individual piece of research for their Master’s Dissertation.

Additionally, students participate in a number of residential field trips and site visits through the year, attend a distinguished lecture series, and will engage in role plays, weekly seminars, and a practitioner viewpoint course.

Assessment

All students must submit a dissertation of between 12,000 and 15,000 words. Planning for the dissertation begins in January, and students will work full-time on research betwen April and August. 5% of the dissertation marks will be assigned through a plan submitted in January; 15% will be assigned through an oral presentation given at a Dissertation Conference in July; 10% will be assigned through the preparation of a research poster which will also be displayed in July.

Continuing

The MPhil is a professional practice programme and is not specifically designed to lead on to doctoral research. Nevertheless, students wishing to apply for continuation to a PhD in Engineering at Cambridge would normally be expected to attain an overall mark of at least 70%.

Students take two compulsory 'inner core' modules, at least two 'outer core' modules, and four elective modules chosen from a broad list (this list includes the remaining outer core modules).

All core modules, and most of the elective modules, are assessed exclusively by coursework.

A minority of the elective modules are assessed solely through written examination, or through a combination of written examination and coursework. Some students will take no written examinations, but others may take up to four, depending upon module choice.

Students are expected to attend two residential field courses. These are important elements of the programme, but no numerical mark will be given.

At end of the project element of the Management of Technology and Innovation module, students are required to give a 20 minute presentation to the project client, followed by a 30 minute question-and-answer session.

At the discretion of the Examiners, candidates may be required to take an additional oral examination on the work submitted during the course, and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls.

Learning activities and assessment

Teaching on the full-time programme involves a combination of formal lectures, group discussions, tutorials, seminars and directed reading. Generally the programme aims to integrate applied and theoretical knowledge with assessment processes that test both knowledge of the disciplines plus their application and limitations. Each module represents approximately 100 hours of study time, of which typically 24 hours is contact time with the module tutor(s) and the remaining 76 hours is made up of pre-reading, directed reading, preparatory work and assessment.

Methods of assessment are varied and linked to learning requirements. They include open and closed book examination, essays, coursework assignments and case studies.

Career support and prospects

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

The programme is designed for students interested in a career in finance and general management, with our graduates well represented in nearly all functional areas of finance, and in a wide variety of organisations including financial services, consulting, industry and public sector.

The sectors and jobs that our MSc students achieve upon graduation vary depending on their previous experience and pathway taken. In terms of looking at career progression it is useful to consider where alumni are three years after graduation. Looking at the data derived from the School’s continued ranking in the Financial Times Master’s in Management Rankings, alumni continue to operate in a variety of sectors and that three years after graduation on average 25% of them are in senior manager roles and 20% in junior management positions.

Study Support

The Effective Learning Service (ELS) is a dedicated facility within the School of Management, established to support our students to maximise their academic learning (eg assignments and examinations) as well as help overseas students adapt quickly to UK academic requirements. The ELS is run by Martin Sedgley, supported by Amy Allhouse, and provides a huge range of services, including various workshops run during term time, 1-1 consultations and vast printed and online resources to cater for every possible development area.
