Competency in project management has become a key part of the skills-set of every construction professional and executive, with many construction project managers functioning in a strategic and co-ordinating role in the delivery of the client’s physical development and investment programme.

Society continues to value and shape the built environment resulting in both public and private investment in construction assets and the successful completion of construction projects. As these projects become more socially and technically complex in a changing world dominated by a concern for sustainability, there has been a growing challenge to develop existing and new skills and expertise in construction project management. This challenge is not only national but global as the need for construction project management skills continues to grow internationally. Indeed, our student cohorts reflect this global challenge with students from across multiple continents.

We have been running programmes in MSc Construction Project Management for nearly 20 years. This arose from the need to extend the managerial remit to those activities that fall outside the construction phase to include areas such as financing, design and hand-over. The programme is therefore tailored for construction professionals looking for a more holistic perspective of construction project processes and the challenge of project management in complex building and infrastructure projects.

Accreditation of the programme is provided by the UK’s Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Engineering Council and The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

Programme modules

- ICT for Construction Projects
This module introduces managers to a wide range of tools and technologies appropriate for their role and projects. The module covers a range of topics including project information flows, e-business, database technologies, emerging technologies, building information modelling technologies, groupware and collaborative systems.

- Research and Communication
The aims of this module are to provide the student with an overview of sources of information in construction; to explain to students how to conduct a literature review and introduce students to the principal methods of investigation in construction research; and provide an opportunity for each student to develop professional and academic skills in oral and written communication.

- Principles of Design and Construction
This module teaches students the fundamental principles of managing a project during the design and construction phases. The module develops knowledge and understanding of the role and principles of the estimating, tendering and planning of construction projects and the importance of health and safety in relation to design and construction activities.

- Principles of Project Management
Students will gain an understanding of construction project management principles and theory. Specific areas covered include management responsibility for running construction projects; contemporary issues facing the construction industry; cultural complexity and the impact of behaviour and motivation on performance; and applying appropriate project management techniques for the different project phases.

- Design Management
This module introduces various Design Management techniques and approaches. These include process mapping techniques for design; ways to analyse and optimise the design process; and students will gain an understanding of the internal workings of a design office and their relationship with the construction team.

- Sustainability and the Built Environment
Students will gain an understanding of sustainability issues that relate to the built environment; ways in which these issues can be managed and effective communication of both strategic and technical information.

- Management of Construction Processes
This module introduces students to cutting edge contemporary management concepts and innovations; complexities of setting up and managing logistics on large construction sites; and essential project management techniques such as risk management.

- Postgraduate Research Project
The aim of this module is to provide the student with experience of the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to Construction Project Management.

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of strategic management and the tools for formulating and implementing strategies within the construction sector. The application of strategic management tools to develop appropriate change strategies will be explored and fundamental skills in communication, negotiation and leadership will be developed.

- People and Teams
Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of the key fundamental management principles and theory (such as motivation, teamwork, leadership, task management) and how they can be applied to managing people within the context of the construction project environment. Students will also be able to analyse current theoretical approaches to people management, appreciate importance of ethics and cultural issues and evaluate the key factors driving HRM systems.

- Procurement and Contract Procedure
This module aims to develop students understanding of procurement methods, different forms of contract and contract practice. The module is designed to give students key practical skills including advising clients on appropriate procurement and tendering methods; selecting the most appropriate form of construction contract; and manage a construction contract effectively.

- Business Economics and Finance
Students will gain a sound understanding of macro, meso and micro economics and types, sources and management of finance relating to construction organisations and projects. This will allow students to analyse the policies and operations of construction organisations and projects from an economic perspective to determine likely performance consequences and analyse corporate financial data for investment prospects and business management decisions.

- Federated 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM)
The creation, deployment and use of aggregated and integrated models are key goals of collaboration through BIM. This module aims to deliver hands-on practical skills on the use of BIM technologies (i.e. design software and collaboration tools) for real-time co-creation and data sharing of federated/aggregated 3D BIM models. The concept of shared situational awareness within design teams/processes will be explored.

Careers and further study

Previous students have gone on to work for a variety of organisations nationally and internationally. These include Arup, Atkins, BAM Nuttall Ltd, Balfour Beatty, Kier Group, Morgan Sindall, Skanska and Transport for London. Many of these organisations engage with the University in both collaborative research and in delivering lectures on the courses. This provides an ideal opportunity for students to engage in discussions about employment opportunities.

Scholarships and bursaries

The University offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a county outside the European Union. These Scholarships are to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.

This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng (Hons) undergraduate first degree.

This programme was developed in response to the growing demand from the construction and property industry for flexible professionals capable of strategic thinking and a creative response to volatile economic conditions. Planning and controlling the allocation of resources, and the detailed matching of design and production to the needs of the market for built space, are at the core of the construction and property industries.

This programme enables students to develop analytical, technical and managerial skills and prepares them for leadership roles in the construction and property industries. The structure allows consideration of both the theory and applications of economics, finance and management in the context of construction projects and portfolios. The emphasis of this programme is on the presentation and communication of workable solutions to complex problems.

The university has invested £76 million in a new building to house the campus library, TV studios and academic facilities for disciplines including architecture, design and construction. Our construction business management degree equips you for a management career in major construction projects.

Who is it for?

This course is for engineers, architects, surveyors, construction managers, facilities managers, and any construction professional, who wants a management career in construction. The course arms students with the business knowledge and management skills needed for a fast track career in construction management.

Objectives

This course aims to improve the rate of business return from construction professionals, by equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to manage the construction process.

Teaching and learning

A mix of approaches is used in the delivery of the Construction Management postgraduate course. For some modules a traditional lecture format prevails; in others there is a greater emphasis on case studies and learning through active participation. In general, considerable team-work in various practical exercises and group assignments is required. All modules involve undertaking a certain number of individual and/or group assignments (coursework) during the teaching terms. Many of these assignments involve essay writing. Furthermore, four modules are additionally assessed by comprehensive final examinations.

Completion of modules and examinations will lead to the award of a Post Graduate Diploma. The completion of modules, examinations and a dissertation will lead to the award of the MSc. The Construction Management MSc comprises 180 credits, with 60 credits awarded to the Project. Attendance is required to obtain 120 credits from the taught modules. This can be achieved by one of two methods:

Full-time
A 12-month full-time option during which students attend all the taught modules during Semesters 1 & 2, and complete their Project within the 12-months period of the degree.

Part-time
A 24-month part-time option during which a student attends half the modules in a first 12-month period, followed by the other half the next year.

Students are expected to complete all the modules in this two year period. The teaching periods are structured to deliver core modules in a sequence which permits engagement by P-T students alongside F-T students. The Project is undertaken by Part-Time students in the second year. Teaching takes place on two full days per week, with some lectures (Law) taking place in the evening. In addition there is a small number of team-working weekends, plus a Foundation Week at the start of the programme each year, which is attended by all (full- and part-time) students.

This method of delivery is designed to be attractive to students working full-time within reasonable commuting distance of City, University of London (probably within the M25 cordon), as well as to full-time students, by concentrating tuition into two days per week on average, and encouraging flexibility for independent study.

Modules

The taught part of the Construction Management Masters course is based on ten modules, of which five are carefully chosen to provide a broad foundation in various aspects of the theory and practice in the field of general management.

These modules are delivered by academic staff members of City's Cass Business School. They constitute part of the curriculum for the MSc Management, a degree run by Cass Business School. The five management modules are complemented by five construction-oriented modules delivered by senior professional engineers with wide experience in the construction industry.

The latter set of modules covers important aspects in the practice of planning, financing, and delivering large scale civil engineering and infrastructure projects. These modules focus on the development of practical management skills within a construction context.

The culmination of the course is the Project: a major individual research exercise on a topic within the broad area of construction management conducted under the direction of a supervisor.

The major product of the Project work is a written report (dissertation). The topics/titles for this major Project can be chosen from: (a) a list suggested by the lecturers of the course, (b) students' own ideas/initiatives, or (c) where applicable by a student's sponsoring company/industrial partner.

It will also cover the microeconomic issues including supply chain management.

Provides an understanding of financial management within the wider construction industry and how this can be affected through cyclical trends. Teaching and learning

Teaching, learning and assessment methods are to a considerable degree determined by the use of the applied learning approach which leads to a more challenging and industrially relevant course than the traditional lecture approach. Learning takes place through groups of students puzzling through problems, often adapted from real situations with much of the complexity and context intact, using published resources, or reference to experts who are available to offer advice.

In full-time mode, the delivery of new material is weekly with intermediate tutorial or seminar sessions. The intensive study weeks and a European field-trip, when students in both modes of study come together, complement this delivery pattern. For the open-learner, the virtual learning environment is the primary mode of delivery. Communication with open-learning students will be supplemented by email and telephone during the periods off-campus.

Approach to assessment

Assessment is 100% coursework, which includes a great variety of types of work, including quizzes taken remotely on Moodle (Brookes online learning environment). Material can be downloaded from our virtual learning environment and closed discussions can take place. It also enables on-campus and open-learning students to remain in contact with each other.

Field trips

A European field trip is a compulsory element of the PGCert modules. It typically takes place over a five-day period towards the end of January and is heavily subsidised by the department.

The aim of this field trip is to consolidate the knowledge gained in the early part of the course and to develop team and other relationships through exposing our students to European project management practices and to assess their ability to observe and report on the different approaches to project management in the UK and in a European country.

The field trip normally consists of visits to prominent construction/engineering projects and sites, plus architectural attractions, both en route and at the destination. You are introduced to the development and planning practices at the destination, as well as having the opportunity to visit major complex projects.

Student body

The programme attracts students from diverse backgrounds and locations. Students will normally hold degrees in fields within the realm of the built environment including Civil Engineering, Construction, Architecture and Building, and have decided to contribute to the development of the built environment around us by effectively managing construction projects.

Our students hail from as far afield as Nigeria, Russia and India, with backgrounds ranging from recently graduated at undergraduate level, to working with small local companies, to fully established managers in large international construction companies. This diverse group of students bring with them individual responses to the applied learning approach that is at the core of our course delivery.

Typically the open-learning students are employed by a number of different organisations from the private and public sectors in different countries. They have the opportunity to share their experiences in order to gain better understanding of the industry, the range of challenges that Construction Project Managers face, and therefore the breadth of skills that they need to develop in order to perform successfully.

Our full-time students benefit from contact with the open-learning students engaged in construction project management roles in a variety of built environment projects across many countries.

All of our open-learning students are employed full-time by prominent companies in the sector. Full-time students find similar employment shortly after graduation. In the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), our Unit of Assessment (UoA 16) ranked 4th within the University in terms of its Grade Point Average (GPA). This course provides an opportunity to develop expertise in the developing field of information management for built environment and infrastructure. It provides an introduction to fundamental academic subjects related to information management and an understanding of the latest theories and research, which inform emerging vocational practice across design, construction and operation.

Gain professional recognition

The Master of Construction Practice is professionally recognised by some of Australia’s leading professional bodies. This allows graduates to differentiate themselves within the industry. Graduates are internationally recognised by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) as well as the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). They are also nationally accredited with the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS), and meets the educational requirement set by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) for the granting of an Open Builders Licence.

Further, the program is also delivered in intensive mode. Intensive Mode Delivery is a compact and time efficient way to complete a postgraduate qualification with minimal impact on professional and personal lifestyles. Each subject is delivered over two weekends during the semester. There are two sets of three-day sessions per subject, generally scheduled Thursday to Saturday (approximately six to eight contact hours per day) with a break of four or five weeks between session one and session two of each subject.

Participants will receive 40 hours of combined lectures, discussion groups, case studies and workshops during contact hours. International students are required to be on campus every week.

This includes an overview of how the construction sector operates in the developed and developing world and of the macro-economic and micro-economic factors that influence the work of the sector.

The distinctive focus is on the management of the construction firm, including finance, organisation, project procurement, contracts for design and construction, information and communication technologies in the construction sector and the expectations of clients, developers, financiers and investors in a project.

The programme introduces students to core management concepts in semester one before selecting one of four specialist pathways in semester two. Students also have the opportunity to choose a mixed pathway route, tailoring the course to their requirements.

The Construction Management pathway provides advanced training to graduates to develop their construction management skills enabling them to play leading roles in a professional capacity in both the civil engineering and building industries. The skills gained will provide them with ability to respond to changing requirements of the construction industry in both the UK and overseas. The programme includes lectures, tutorials, workshops, industrial seminars, site visits and individual projects.

This programme addresses management in the construction industry in its widest sense. The purpose is to provide advanced training to graduates aspiring to higher or middle management positions in the civil engineering and building industries. It addresses the working of those organisations, as well as disciplines and techniques of practical use in the management and implementation of all stages of construction and civil engineering projects. This opens up a wide range of career opportunities, as many of the techniques are applicable both within and outside the construction industry.

The programme includes lectures, tutorials, workshops, industrial seminars, site visits and an individual project.

Semester one modules are taken by all students to develop a firm base of general knowledge and techniques for further specialised management study. Delivered by leading academics in Birmingham Business School (BBS), the management content is research led, drawing on the expertise and reputation of BBS to help deliver a high-quality experience for students. Topics include strategy, innovation, marketing, organisational behaviour and financial management.

Semester two sees students move into a pathway of their choice, where the key management concepts tackled in the first semester will be complemented by the exploration of practical management applications by academics from the School of Engineering, drawing upon its wealth of research experience and industrial links.

This new structure will allow us to present the core principles in semester one and then to demonstrate their application in semester two before you progress into the summer and the opportunity to investigate and develop a contemporary Engineering Management topic via a 60 credit research project.
