Core modules will introduce you to a range of analytical methods, ensuring you develop a solid foundation in the essential skills for consumer analytics and marketing strategy.
You’ll learn how to analyse geographic data using GIS software and understand the application of this in retail modelling, to evaluate new markets and locations. You’ll study predictive analytics, big data and consumer analytics, business analytics and decision science, and learn how to communicate results through data visualisations.
Alongside this, you’ll learn how to deploy data to inform decisions about marketing strategy. Marketing modules include marketing strategy, consumer behavior and direct, digital and interactive marketing. You’ll also deliver your own data-driven marketing research project for a company.
Optional modules allow you to further your knowledge in a related area of interest, either corporate social responsibility, internal communications and managing change, or applied population and demographic analysis.
By the end of the course, you’ll submit an independent project. You can either research a topic in-depth and submit a dissertation, or gain practical experience through a consultancy project working with an external organisation.

Products and services and the way they’re developed, produced, and distributed put a considerable amount of pressure on the world’s resources. The private sector is therefore key to solving structural resource scarcity and environmental problems, notably related to fossil energy use and climate change.
More and more businesses believe they have a responsibility to tackle environmental challenges and, indeed, do so. But how can all businesses be gotten to think of both planet and profit? Does it work best when the pressure comes directly from governance in the form of economic sanctions and legislation? Or is it better that the pressure comes from consumers demanding sustainability? If so, how can public opinion be swayed in favour of the environment?

In the Master’s in Corporate Sustainability, we’ll look at all these aspects. Therefore, you can expect to learn about behavioural economics, organisational studies and innovation management as well as about different environmentally sustainable economies. Examples of sustainable economy include the we-economy, the bio-economy, the circular economy and the sharing economy. Another crucial question is whether these can exist in the current market where the main focus lies on economic growth.
You’ll be introduced to the latest scientific insights, which will be illustrated with numerous examples from the private sector: from cars and light bulbs to second-hand item web shops to coffee and chocolate. This programme is run by the Centre for Environmental Strategy (CES) – a leading centre for environmental and sustainability-related research and postgraduate teaching.
CES accommodates a wide range of disciplines dedicated to resolving environmental problems, and this Masters programme prepares a new generation of environment and sustainability professionals for the strategic challenges ahead.
This programme provides both a theoretical and practical grounding for evaluating the technical, social, economic and organisational elements of environmental problems.
These include life-cycle assessment and other analytical methods to understand how to use resources and manage materials and waste. You will learn how to anticipate and respond to future policy developments and market pressures, understand stakeholders’ roles, and develop problem-solving and decision-making skills.

This programme is studied full-time and part-time. It consists of eight taught modules and a dissertation.

Full-time students are able to undertake an industrial placement module which enables them to spend six to twelve weeks working for a company or NGO, doing the type of work they will aim to find on graduation.

Several high-profile guest lecturers have assisted with the delivery of some of the modules. CES modules make maximum use of guest lecturers, drawing on the practical skills and experience of key experts from government and industry to complement the theoretical components of the modules offered.
For example, Jonathon Porritt, former chairman of the Sustainable Development Commission, gives a guest lecture on the Sustainable Development Applications module, analysing the standing of sustainable development in business and policy making.
The extensive expertise of CES academics and researchers is also drawn upon in modules. Professor Tim Jackson, advisor to the government and international bodies and author of the seminal book, Prosperity without Growth – economics for a finite planet– also lectures on some CES modules.
We often give our students the opportunity to acquire international experience during their degrees by taking advantage of our exchange agreements with overseas universities.

The MSc in Environmental Technology provides the highest standard of knowledge and skills development for environmental specialists. Through the course students acquire a diverse range of discipline-specific problem-solving frameworks for tackling contemporary environmental issues. A major emphasis of the course is on the way that environments function and on the compatible tools, alternative technologies and policies for sustainable environmental management. Contemporary “business-as-usual” solutions are not sufficient for achieving meaningful change in a resource-constrained and inequitable world. Students taking the Business and the Environment Option (B&E) will develop a critical understanding of how businesses currently tackle the challenges of sustainability in the broadest of senses. They will use creative thinking to develop proactive businesses models that go beyond contemporary levels of sustainability performance.
The B&E Option provides students with an understanding of opportunities and risks that businesses face in the light of growing environmental and sustainability constraints and social inequality. It gives them the critical thinking skills required to develop entrepreneurial solutions that maximise those opportunities. Students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to deal with the complex choices that business must face in order to function as responsible members of society.
The Option benefits from the input of leading companies and strategists in the fields of sustainability, environment, finance, retail and emerging markets, and students are exposed to a wide variety of industry and academic perspectives. There is a strong emphasis on problem-solving , taking a learning-by-doing approach and going beyond the norm to develop solutions to difficult problems using systemic, innovative thinking coupled with sound business and organisational management strategies.
Teaching is supported with case study sessions, which give students the skills and confidence to rigorously analysis sustainable business problems. Extensive practical work serves to both reinforce learning and to give students exposure to real-world problems. A group-based consultancy project is carried out in conjunction with leading UK-based companies, whilst a business modelling exercise gives students the opportunity to develop their own ideas of what a responsible company should look like by creating robust business ideas that have positive environmental and social impacts.
