Core course units:
Sustainability, Development and Governance
This course will equip students with a detailed understanding of the development of sustainable development as a discourse. Students will explore key sustainability issues such as climate change, globalisation, and human responses with an emphasis on the emergence of environmental governance as a means to pursue sustainability.

Sustainability, Development and Society
You will develop a detailed understanding of key social / environmental relationships incorporating contemporary issues in the geographies of sustainability. These will include \'risk society\', sustainable cities, and the impacts of corporate sector activities on the environment. You will also understand the challenges to sustainable development at household and community levels, with a focus on community-based approaches to sustainable development.

Business Ethics and Enterprise
The aim of the course is to equip students with the moral frameworks and critical abilities necessary to understand the role of business in society from an ethical perspective. The course will cover different types of business including large publicly traded multinationals, small and medium sized enterprises, social enterprises and family firms. Students will be expected to understand the different issues in these organizational types and to articulate moral arguments from a range of different perspectives.

International Strategy
This course provides the student with an understanding of how international business strategy fits into the organisation and running of a company or multi-company corporation. The lectures are used to illustrate the key points under each topic as well as real business examples. Workshops will be used for case studies and applications of the material covered in the lectures. The aim of the module is to introduce the student to the way in which a firm can achieve sustainable competitive advantage through strategy.

Community Volunteer Project
You will undertake an independent volunteer project which will give you practical experience in gaining sustainability related work experience in a non-for profit organisation. The project will enhance your employability whilst and provide an opportunity to gain practical experience of third sector organisational objectives, cultures and practices.

Dissertation Preparation and Research Methods
The Research methods unit will help prepare you for your dissertation. You will recognise and critically evaluate approaches to management research and the assumptions upon which they are based. This will equip you to make justified choices as to appropriate quantitative/qualitative research methods for data collection and subsequent analysis. You will then be able to conduct research, and evaluate primary and secondary data sources in a systematic and critically reflective manner.

You will also evaluate potential limitations to research investigation and applications and develop a coherent and appropriate research proposal, recognising the ethical implications of research investigations and their impact upon findings.

Dissertation
You will analyse a sustainability or CSR issue in depth. By the end of the dissertation, you will be able to plan and manage a project, define aims and objectives, identify appropriate data sources and collection methods, be aware of and deal with potential pitfalls, execute a dissertation plan, and construct an effective argument.

- Elective course units:
International Sustainability Management
This course provides participants with an understanding of how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) informs sustainability management issues in large, transnational organisations. It will focus on issues such as consumption and sustainability as dichotomised between the apparently incompatible tensions of economic and environmental interests.

Technology and Development
This course provides you with an introduction to the role of technology in development, focusing particularly on mobile phone and computer technologies. The course combines an understanding of key theoretical debates and how technologies have been applied in diverse sectors such as health and education. The course also includes training in the use of GIS (geographical information systems) within a development context.

Participatory research
This course combines detailed understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of participatory research and methods with practical experience of using different participatory research techniques. These include participatory diagramming, participatory video and participatory environmental monitoring.

On completion of the course graduates will have:
- Gained insight and experience in the fields of sustainability and management and be well prepared to work in a number of related areas.

- Developed a thorough understanding of graduate research, enabling them to pursue further study at postgraduate level.

Assessment

Assessment is carried out by a variety of methods including coursework, examinations and a dissertation.

The Master of Studies (MSt) in Sustainability Leadership is an interdisciplinary postgraduate degree that explores leadership responses to sustainability challenges and opportunities. This programme is accredited by the University of Cambridge and delivered by the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL).

The MSt is offered in association with the Departments of Architecture, Engineering, Geography, Land Economy and the Judge Business School. Aims of the programme

- support and facilitation by a CISL-led team of faculty, tutors and supervisors from within the University

Some assignments and the dissertation require literature reviews. The dissertation also involves an oral presentation.

Students are given formal feedback on their assignment and informal feedback throughout their course, including during supervisions. First year tutors give an annual progress report at the end of year 1 and dissertation supervisors provide termly reports during year 2.

The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), an institute within the School of Technology, has run executive development programmes in sustainability for 25 years, with open programmes in the UK, Europe, North America, South America, South Africa and Australia, and customised programmes for many leading organisations.

Who is the course designed for?

The course has been designed for current and future leaders working in organisations that recognise the importance of sustainable development, and are committed to sharing their knowledge/experience and learning from others. It is an award of the University of Cambridge, and equivalent to one third of a Master’s degree.

It is assumed that participants will have a reasonably good general knowledge of some of the issues dealt with during the programme. However, it is not essential to have specialised knowledge, and it is not assumed that participants have direct responsibility for sustainability or related areas, such as CSR or environmental affairs.

Aims of the programme

Participants successfully completing the programme will:

- Gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Business accredited by the University of Cambridge;
- Deepen their understanding of how sustainability issues impact on their sector, their organisation and their role;
- Develop the means to articulate the business case for sustainability, whilst balancing stakeholders' needs

Format

In recognition of the practical challenges of participants undertaking study whilst holding down a full-time job, the programme does not require prolonged periods away from the workplace. Besides the short residential workshops, the core of the programme is an individual piece of work-related research and the development of a strategic action plan that is relevant to the participant's organisation.

A group project helps to ensure that as much inter-organisational learning takes place as possible. An online Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) facilitates communication and collaboration between the short, intensive workshops.

The course runs for nine months and encompasses the following key elements:

- A three-week preparatory phase;
- Three residential workshops;
- Ongoing virtual and non-residential learning activities, including preparatory materials (readings / videos / audios) in advance of the residential workshops;
- Two individual assignments and a collaborative research project;
- Support and facilitation from a team of programme tutors;
- Informal and formal collaboration with fellow participants via email, teleconferences, face-to-face meetings, and the VLE.

In addition to attending the workshops, it is estimated that participants need to undertake at least 3–4 hours of work every week to complete the programme successfully.

Core modules will introduce you to a range of analytical methods, ensuring you develop a solid foundation in the essential skills for consumer analytics and marketing strategy.

You’ll learn how to analyse geographic data using GIS software and understand the application of this in retail modelling, to evaluate new markets and locations. You’ll study predictive analytics, big data and consumer analytics, business analytics and decision science, and learn how to communicate results through data visualisations.

Alongside this, you’ll learn how to deploy data to inform decisions about marketing strategy. Marketing modules include marketing strategy, consumer behavior and direct, digital and interactive marketing. You’ll also deliver your own data-driven marketing research project for a company.

Optional modules allow you to further your knowledge in a related area of interest, either corporate social responsibility, internal communications and managing change, or applied population and demographic analysis.

Overview

Innovation is the fuel of companies’ competitive strategies; radical innovations can challenge established ways of working and revolutionise the business models of entire industries. 

This course examines strategy and innovation in the context of growth, including the growth of established companies through the introduction of new products, services and business models, as well as new business growth. It covers contemporary topics such as the sharing economy, disruptive technologies and service innovation concepts. There is also an emphasis on sustainability, including social, environmental and economic sustainability, reflecting current global trends. These themes also reflect the considerable research expertise of our staff, some of whom are world-leaders in their field.

We welcome applicants who have just completed their undergraduate studies as well as those with substantial professional experience who are looking to advance their current career or move into a new sector. The diversity of our student community adds another dimension to the learning experience, offering the opportunity to develop a global network.

Career Opportunities

Your knowledge of strategic thinking and the innovation process, alongside your management capabilities, will mean you are well placed to go into any organisation that is interested in developing new products or business models. Work placement scheme

Kingston University has set up a scheme that allows postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing to include a work placement element in their course starting from September 2017. The placement scheme is available for both international and home/EU students.

-The work placement, up to 12 months; is optional.
-The work placement takes place after postgraduate students have successfully completed the taught portion of their degree.
-The responsibility for finding the placement is with the student. We cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it.
-As the work placement is an assessed part of the course for international students, this is covered by a student's tier 4 visa.

This programme is run by the Centre for Environmental Strategy (CES) – a leading centre for environmental and sustainability-related research and postgraduate teaching.

CES accommodates a wide range of disciplines dedicated to resolving environmental problems, and this Masters programme prepares a new generation of environment and sustainability professionals for the strategic challenges ahead.

This programme provides both a theoretical and practical grounding for evaluating the technical, social, economic and organisational elements of environmental problems.

These include life-cycle assessment and other analytical methods to understand how to use resources and manage materials and waste. You will learn how to anticipate and respond to future policy developments and market pressures, understand stakeholders’ roles, and develop problem-solving and decision-making skills.

This programme provides a route to graduate membership of the Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment. We encourage you to explore past and present student experiences of our environment and sustainability programmes.

This programme is studied full-time and part-time. It consists of eight taught modules and a dissertation.

Guest lecturers

Several high-profile guest lecturers have assisted with the delivery of some of the modules. CES modules make maximum use of guest lecturers, drawing on the practical skills and experience of key experts from government and industry to complement the theoretical components of the modules offered.

For example, Jonathon Porritt, former chairman of the Sustainable Development Commission, gives a guest lecture on the Sustainable Development Applications module, analysing the standing of sustainable development in business and policy making.

The extensive expertise of CES academics and researchers is also drawn upon in modules. Professor Tim Jackson, advisor to the government and international bodies and author of the seminal book, Prosperity without Growth – economics for a finite planet– also lectures on some CES modules.

Educational aims of the programme

  • Provide theoretical and practical grounding for evaluating technical, social, economic, and organisational aspects of environmental problems
  • Apply life-cycle assessment thinking and other analytical methods to gain better understanding of resource uses and materials/wastes management

Recently the OECD and Worldbank have launched a Green Growth strategy, which looks for ways to combine inclusive economic growth with a non-deteriorating environment. International development agencies, national governments, regional planners, but also internationally operating firms have to deal with the tension between development and growth on the one hand, and responsible use of resources on the other hand.

This has resulted in a wide variety of responses at the firm level, from foreign investments with the aim of securing resources to corporate social responsibility strategies. At the more aggregate level, analysts have been questioning the growth imperative (cf. Occupy Wall Street, Degrowth) - is growth obsolete?

Evaluate policies and firm strategies towards development and sustainable resource use:
In the 'Sustainability and Growth' track, you will learn how to analyze the sources of economic growth in a country or region, the barriers to growth and development they face, and the possible negative consequences of growth. You will be trained to evaluate policies and firm strategies towards development and sustainable resource use.

The track is closely linked to the Tilburg Sustainability Center, a multidisciplinary research and policy advise institute.

In these courses, you will learn how to evaluate people’s willingness to pay for environmental improvements, and how to measure the effectiveness of structural reform policies. You will write policy proposals regarding inequality and growth, educational policies, and innovation strategies. An example of a case you will be analyzing is investment in sustainable production methods in Vietnamese villages.

Business and the Environment

Contemporary “business-as-usual” solutions are not sufficient for achieving meaningful change in a resource-constrained and inequitable world. Students taking the Business and the Environment Option (B&E) will develop a critical understanding of how businesses currently tackle the challenges of sustainability in the broadest of senses. They will use creative thinking to develop proactive businesses models that go beyond contemporary levels of sustainability performance.

The B&E Option provides students with an understanding of opportunities and risks that businesses face in the light of growing environmental and sustainability constraints and social inequality. It gives them the critical thinking skills required to develop entrepreneurial solutions that maximise those opportunities. Students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to deal with the complex choices that business must face in order to function as responsible members of society.

The Option benefits from the input of leading companies and strategists in the fields of sustainability, environment, finance, retail and emerging markets, and students are exposed to a wide variety of industry and academic perspectives. There is a strong emphasis on problem-solving , taking a learning-by-doing approach and going beyond the norm to develop solutions to difficult problems using systemic, innovative thinking coupled with sound business and organisational management strategies.

Teaching is supported with case study sessions, which give students the skills and confidence to rigorously analysis sustainable business problems. Extensive practical work serves to both reinforce learning and to give students exposure to real-world problems. A group-based consultancy project is carried out in conjunction with leading UK-based companies, whilst a business modelling exercise gives students the opportunity to develop their own ideas of what a responsible company should look like by creating robust business ideas that have positive environmental and social impacts.

Learning, teaching and assessment

You will be assessed through a mixture of examinations and coursework. The taught element of the programme is then complemented by a substantial piece of research leading to the completion of a dissertation.

Part-time / Distance learning
Part-time distance learning will allow you the flexibility to take control of your own learning and balance study with professional and personal obligations.

Applying yourself to two modules per term, combined with the final dissertation, will allow you to complete the course in the recommended two year period. However you are able to spread your study over a maximum of five years, affording you the opportunity to study at a slower pace or take breaks where necessary.
