There is a strong postgraduate culture which Sustainability students can enjoy.
The Graduate School of Natural Resources Law, Policy and Management includes both the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law Policy and the Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science (under the auspices of UNESCO) both of which have long standing international reputations. Specialist high-level speakers sourced from international organisations are invited to present throughout the year, these sessions provide a vital opportunity for students to become connected with industry so continued communication is encouraged after the events.

The School of the Environment and CECHR similarly have an extended programme of guest lectures and speakers and through xcechr there are multiple events bringing Masters and PhD students together by a common interest in environmental change research. Examples of the activities that result include Student-Supervisor-Seminar-Series, ‘change-maker workshops’ and a national show-case ‘Facing the Future’ Symposium.

Who should study this course?

This course is suitable for a wide range of graduates from;
Environmental backgrounds (e.g. geography, planning, environmental studies) looking to upskill and achieve a deeper understanding
Natural science graduates (e.g. chemistry, maths) and engineers looking to develop a more rounded understanding of environmental issues, especially in relation to regulation and policy.
Arts and social science students wishing to use their social, economic and political perspectives to take on the challenges associated with complex environmental systems and their management.

How you will be taught

The course is taught as a collection of 20 credit modules amounting to a total of 180 Masters (SHE M, SCQF 11) credits. The delivery style and assessment requirements for each module varies as we believe a diversity of practice provides strength. Nevertheless all modules combine a mixture of formal lecture, small group seminar, practical/field classes and individual tutorials depending on need and the particular learning objectives of each module. The study load corresponds to one third in each of the first two teaching semesters and one third for independent study for the dissertation the summer recess.

What you will study

There are a choice of four specialist pathways in addition to the MSc in Sustainability: See above.

Each of the five MSc pathways contains a common core comprising ‘Principles of Sustainability’ and ‘Transformation for Sustainability’, along with the ‘Research Training’ module. Each named pathway then comprises a specialised core module and then options drawn from a wide range of electives (c. 30 available from contributing academic Schools). All five MSc pathways feature a 60 credit individual research project, the weighting of which reflects the importance of independent investigation and permitting students to develop expertise in their chosen area through effectively four months of dedicated research.

Each of the MSc in Sustainability pathways is geared around the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge and Understanding:
Achieve a critical understanding of key sustainability principles and perspectives informing actions in pursuit of sustainable development, inclusive of environment, economy and equity considerations;
Demonstrate knowledge of approaches to evaluating and measuring sustainability;
Apply different concepts of transformation and change to enable individual and societal shifts towards more sustainable practices;

Skills:
Ability to analyse, evaluate and critically review theory and policy debates relating to sustainability;
Ability to draw on international perspectives and examples of best practice in relation to methods of evaluation and assessment of sustainability;
Ability to design and plan interventions for creating change to promote greater sustainability across different scales;
Design and undertake a substantial independent research project to address significant areas of theory and/or practice.

Capabilities:
Critique and synthesis theory and evidence drawing on a variety of sources;
Ability to communicate evidenced based reports relevant to a range of stakeholders, including policy makers;
Ability to work independently and as part of a team tackling complex environmental problems to tight deadlines;
Ability to design and evaluate transformative change leading to improved sustainability strategies, processes and plans

Transferrable skills, including building arguments, synthesis, reflexivity and making presentations.

How you will be assessed

Assessment follows a variety of styles including individual essays and practical assignments along with formal written examinations; to group exercises and peer group assessment – this is particularly important where oral presentations are involved. The independent research project (dissertation) is an excellent opportunity for a candidate to achieve deep insight into a topic of their own choice. Masters level dissertations can be very diverse, and include formal hypothesis-led research projects; theory or literature-based projects; case-study assessment and advanced professional practice evaluations. Choice of dissertations is negotiated between the student and his or her academic supervisor.

Corporate environmental and sustainability management

All organisations are impacted by social and environmental sustainability issues to some degree. To enable them to respond they need to understand the national and international regulatory environment, the business case for sustainability, effective strategic responses and sustainability measurement approaches.

The Corporate Environmental and Sustainability Management specialisation explores the complex mix of social, environmental and economic sustainability challenges and opportunities faced by organisations. You will explore how global and national environmental regulation influences organisations’ transition to sustainability. You will learn how to design, implement and facilitate strategies and solutions in corporate management for sustainable and accountable development.

Environment and governance

Governments, markets and civil society play important and inter-related roles in the governance of the environment. The term environmental governance is used to capture the full range of actors and organisations involved. Understanding how change occurs from the scale of the individual through to the broader society, and from local to national and international scales of governance is key to effective environmental governance.

There are a broad range of contexts in which transitions to more sustainable practices are needed, including environmental policy and analysis, planning, consulting, education, advocacy and management.

The Environment and Governance specialisation will develop your understanding of policy and governance to enable change and responsible action to support sustainability. You will learn to critically analyse problems of environmental governance and sustainability to enable informed solution development.

Environmental security

The challenges of global environmental security are diverse—from energy shortages, loss of biodiversity, extreme temperatures, emerging infectious diseases and food and water insecurity. Society must be equipped to deal with these challenges, with solutions supported by the best scientific evidence.

Globally there is a growing need for professionals with science literacy skills to interpret and translate the evidence about environmental security that is crucial to a wide variety of sectors and stakeholders.

The Environmental Security specialisation will provide you with the knowledge and understanding to guide the sustainable use of resources and protection of the natural environment, and to integrate this into policy and management.

International development and environment

Some of the hardest hit by changes in our environment are in developing nations. This requires tailored solutions that encompass economic change, social equity and environmental protection. The world is facing increasing environmental threats which are posing severe scientific, social and economic challenges to the human race. These challenges include: the depletion of natural resources, the loss of diversity and the need to develop new forms of energy generation whilst efficiently utilising existing energy sources.
Tackling these environmental problems and establishing a sustainable environment requires the adoption of appropriate policies and managerial strategies. The interdisciplinary nature of this postgraduate course provides a broad understanding of these environmental problems whilst embedding the appropriate specialist scientific, managerial and generic skills for a career in the environmental sustainability sector.

Keele University Sustainability Hub

Keele University’s campus has unrivalled potential to form a unique hub for research, development and demonstration of a range of environmental and sustainable technologies.

The Keele Sustainability Hub site contains both academic buildings and buildings for technological companies. Renewable energy sources are integrated into these buildings, incorporating:

The main focus of the site is the specialist Hub for Sustainability building. The Sustainability Hub acts as a focus for the research into, teaching of, and management of sustainability and green technology that takes place at Keele University. It’s a means to bring all these different activities together and then to communicate the innovations and implications out to the rest of campus, schools, businesses and the wider community.

As a student on the MSc in Environmental Sustainability & Green Technology programme a lot of your teaching will take place at the Hub, and you’ll have direct access to these environmental developments first hand. The students use the Hub and its facilities as their base - a place to meet and to study - during their year at Keele.

Course Aims

The MSc in Environmental Sustainability and Green Technology is designed to provide an interdisciplinary understanding of environmental challenges whilst giving the opportunity to specialise in several sustainability themes related to geosciences, energy generation, biological science, green information technology, environmental policy and politics, and project management.

Successful students will gain
- An understanding of knowledge in the areas of science, technology, policy and green political theory relevant to environmental sustainability

- Experience in analytical and computer techniques which would allow them to contribute to the solving of environmental challenges

- A conceptual understanding to evaluate critically current research and advance scholarship in environmental sustainability

- A comprehensive understanding of experimental design, planning and scientific techniques within a research project

- Problem-solving and team-working skills relevant to the implementation of sustainable technologies and policies

Course Content

The MSc programme comprises 8 taught 15-credit modules and a 60-credit research project which is undertaken either at Keele University or on placement with an industrial collaborator.

This structure allows students to obtain a postgraduate certificate (60 credits) or a postgraduate diploma (120 credits) depending on the number of modules studied.

The first two modules provide an overview of important environmental technologies and policies relevant to sustainability. Students then choose four from ten optional modules which are arranged within four themes:
- Renewable and Sustainable Energy
- Biological Challenges and Sustainability
- Environmental Politics
- Policy and Project Management

Cross theme studies are encouraged. This interdisciplinary knowledge is then applied in a student-centred learning situation. This provides the necessary teamwork and problem-solving skills to formulate strategies to address a range of environmental and sustainability challenges.

The 60-credit research project is preceded by a Research Skills module.

Teaching & Assessment

Modules are assessed by assignment and/or examination. The research project is based on the submission of a 15 - 20,000 word report that is undertaken by the student in conjunction with an academic supervisor and, where appropriate, an industrial collaborator.

Field course costs

There will be no charge to new students taking field courses. The School receives an annual financial contribution from the University to support the cost of the field course programme. Therefore field course costs for new postgraduate students will be paid for by the University.

Western science is dominated by ‘reductionism’ – the idea that natural phenomena can be Stephan Harding, Head of Holistic Science at Schumacher Collegefully explained in terms of their component parts. Although it is a useful tool in certain circumstances, reductionism as a world view is incomplete and can be dangerous on its own since it suggests that by analysing the ‘mechanical’ workings of nature we can fully predict and manipulate it entirely for our own benefit.

Holistic Science integrates the useful aspects of reductionism and mainstream science by developing a more comprehensive basis for seeing and knowing. At the heart of this is Goethe’s rigorous and systematic way of involving the imagination in an appreciation of nature’s qualities, complexity and intrinsic value. Holistic thinking is stimulated by exercises using phenomenology and in tackling challenges related to physics, earth system science, ecology, evolutionary biology, organisational development and health studies. Since 1998, when the programme was pioneered at Schumacher College, it has developed a coherent methodology of holistic enquiry, providing a rigorous and ethical framework for a mature science.

In this course you will receive a thorough grounding in the skills and methodologies you need to become a sustainability leader – the ability to analyse sustainability issues and to plan, evaluate and manage an organisation’s environmental, social and economic performance in a rapidly changing world. Developed in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Oxfam and the EU, the course draws on the expertise of environmental and development NGOs as well as the educational community. Since its launch in 1994 this internationally recognised and innovative award has embraced and promoted diversity and inclusion. Flexible study options

The course may be studied either full-time at LSBU, or part-time by distance/flexible learning. The part-time distance learning mode is particularly suitable if you are living overseas or working or who find it difficult to attend a traditional course. Students studying part-time by distance/flexible learning based in their home country are not required to apply for a visa. It is also possible to start by signing on for a short course (two modules). Many students start with the short course and then decide to continue for a further award.

This provides opportunities for placements and projects as well as the chance to be part of a global learning space with over 130 RCEs. The centre is accredited by the UN University Institute for Advanced Study of Sustainability and also hosts seminars and conferences. The programme runs an annual conference with recognised key note speakers in the field of EFS.

Employers have found that the programme has enabled students to develop and enhance work practices in the light of current theories and debates. Environmental Sustainability

Rising sea levels, air and water pollution, and the soaring demand for energy — these and many more challenges confront policy-makers at the global, national and local levels. More and more, society turns to environmental scientists and specialists to find ways to balance human health and environmental protection with free enterprise and economic prosperity. Green growth is one of the central issues of our age.

The 33-credit Master of Science in Environmental Sustainability at LIU Post, the only degree of its kind on Long Island, is designed to educate and train professionals to develop environmentally sustainable solutions for society via multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary coursework integrating the physical and social sciences. The program centers on issues specific to the Long Island/New York metropolitan region while also considering the global context. Students in the Environmental Sustainability program will investigate the region’s diverse systems of natural environments and built infrastructures. Students will be challenged to offer sustainable long-term solutions to a range of critical environmental issues. Our key challenge is to develop resource and energy systems that advance the region’s long-term health and sustainability by developing solutions that can be implemented in partnership with government agencies, businesses, and non-profit organizations.

The M.S. in Environmental Sustainability is offered in a blended format (some courses are delivered up to half online with the remaining courses delivered face-to-face) affording students flexibility and convenience.
