The Master of Studies (MSt) in Sustainability Leadership is an interdisciplinary postgraduate degree that explores leadership responses to sustainability challenges and opportunities. This programme is accredited by the University of Cambridge and delivered by the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL).

The MSt is offered in association with the Departments of Architecture, Engineering, Geography, Land Economy and the Judge Business School. Both academic excellence and leadership on sustainability are prioritised in the competitive selection process, and in the design and delivery of the programme.

Aims of the programme

- To develop leaders who have a wide awareness and deep understanding of the social, environmental, ethical and economic challenges facing the world, and equip them to respond more effectively in their executive roles.
- To expose leaders and future leaders to a range of best-practice cases of how business, government and civil society are responding to these challenges.
- To help leaders to make a compelling ‘business case’ for sustainability in their sector and/or institutional context, and understand how best to put sustainability policies into practice.
- To give leaders insights into the academic debate on sustainability, including some of the key scientific and technological issues, and equip them with research skills relevant to sustainability.

Format

The primary approaches to teaching and learning are:

- taught sessions by academics and practitioners, who are thought-leaders and/or case study illustrators
- group work, involving dialogue, debate and presentations throughout the taught modules, as well as a group research assignment
- individual work, involving research and written presentation of findings on selected topics
- support and facilitation by a CISL-led team of faculty, tutors and supervisors from within the University
- intensive and collaborative e-learning programmes, including e-modules, online webinars and content-based discussions to maximize knowledge sharing.

Contact time

- Lectures: 35 hours per year
- Seminars and classes: 50 hours per year

Assessment

- Dissertation: 15,000 words maximum (including footnotes, tables and graphs but excluding appendices and bibliography).
- An analysis paper of 3,000 words maximum
- A strategy paper of 3,000 words maximum
- A group project of 5,000-7,000 words

Some assignments and the dissertation require literature reviews. The dissertation also involves an oral presentation.

Students are given formal feedback on their assignment and informal feedback throughout their course, including during supervisions. First year tutors give an annual progress report at the end of year 1 and dissertation supervisors provide termly reports during year 2.

Aims of the programme

Participants successfully completing the programme will:

  • Gain a Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Business accredited by the University of Cambridge;
  • Deepen their understanding of how sustainability issues impact on their sector, their organisation and their role;
  • Develop the means to articulate the business case for sustainability, whilst balancing stakeholders' needs;
  • Analyse global business challenges, responses and organisational change;
  • Build confidence to discuss emerging trends and issues which affect the business agenda with senior colleagues;
  • Explore best practice and learn collaboratively with other professionals with different perspectives and experts in the field;
  • Enhance their skills and experience in embedding sustainability in mainstream business operations and driving organisational change
  • Become a member of the Cambridge Sustainability Network, which includes over 5,000 CISL alumni, faculty and contributors from around the world, who are leading the way in turning sustainability thinking into practice.

Format

The Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Business is completed in two parts, with the second part offering considerable flexibility and choice. Part 1 lasts 10 months (part-time) and students complete with the Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Business or the Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Value Chains

Part 2 is completed in 6 months – 3 years depending on the student’s circumstances.

During PG Dip Part 1 participants will:

  • Attend two four-day residential workshops in Cambridge
  • Engage in a range of structured e-learning, reading and reflection, in preparation for the residential workshops
  • Undertake two individual practical assignments based on applying learning in their own organisational context
  • Complete a group project with a small group of 5-8 participants, supported by a programme tutor. Groups work on their projects at and between workshops, and an online platform is provided to aid collaboration.
  • Co-operate with fellow participants, share ideas generously and contribute to the fullest extent.

Having successfully completed the PG Dip Part1, participants will move to the PG Dip Part 2, during which they will:

  • Attend three two-day Sustainability Leadership Laboratories of their choice, according to business relevance or area of interest. The Sustainability Leadership Laboratories take place in Cambridge at least four times per year and are currently delivered under the following four broad themes: Operationalising Sustainability, Sustainability Leadership, Sustainable Innovation and Sustainable Finance.
  • Attend two half-day supervisions to meet their Director of Studies and assignment Supervisors. These take place in Cambridge on days adjacent to the Sustainability Leadership Laboratories.
  • Engage in self-study preparatory readings, webinars and an e-learning module.

Assessment

Students:

  • Complete two individual assignments – an analytical case study and a thought leadership essay.
  • Host an interactive webinar on a theme of relevance to sustainability leadership.

What is Leadership for Sustainability about?

The master’s degree programme is grounded in four core premises:

1. Sustainability requires new forms of organising, especially when it comes to project-based organisations involving diverse stakeholders.

2. Organising and leading sustainability requires new and diverse leading and organising skills, understanding and knowledge for managers and leaders of sustainable projects.

3. Organising and leading sustainability requires a new way of thinking sustainability within and between organisations. Current research on social entrepreneurship and social innovation can reveal new methods and strategies with regards to this.

4. Methodological and methodical knowledge and understanding are needed to enable leaders to make sustainable decisions.

What makes Leadership for Sustainability unique?

In this programme students are taught to reflect upon organisational and leadership challenges linked to organisational development and sustainability. This programme provides students with knowledge and critical understanding of current research in the fields of leadership and organisation, project management, social entrepreneurship and social innovation in the context of sustainability and sustainable development.

This master's programme is also focused on action and doing via diverse projects and even via the thesis work. This is a way to develop students’ professional, conceptual and human skills so that as for example future sustainable leaders and social entrepreneurs, they will drive sustainable changes and have the capacity to make informed decisions about organisational and leadership issues in the management of sustainable organisations and projects.

Teaching methods

Accreditation

The Cranfield Management and Corporate Sustainability MSc is a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) dual accreditation degree. This provides the opportunity to stand out from other management graduates by achieving the CMI’s professional management qualification alongside your Cranfield degree.

Course details

The course comprises thirteen modules, eight covering general management skills and five specialising in corporate sustainability. The ‘Sustainability in Practice’ module provides the opportunity to undertake a practical sustainable business consultancy project. The thesis is also a practical exercise, albeit informed by up-to-date theory. Previous thesis projects have involved working with company sponsors such as Heineken and easyJet. The ‘Managing Corporate Sustainability’ and ‘Creating Sustainable Organisations’ modules provide practical leadership skills in driving sustainable business, from strategic issues such as the circular economy to topics such as sustainable innovation, reporting and employee engagement. The ‘Applied Science and Technology for Environmental Sustainability’ module is taught by environmental experts from Cranfield’s School of Water, Energy and Environment, and provides the specialist skills needed to assess and manage environmental impacts from operations to the supply chain.

Individual project

The thesis will require you to undertake a major research project based on a real sustainability business issue. You will apply your management knowledge, skills and analytical abilities to real-life situations and demonstrate your ability to research issues, critically evaluate data and information, apply tools and techniques to solve management problems, and write a report concisely, informatively and persuasively.

Assessment

Taught modules (65%) are assessed by a combination of group work, written assignments, and examination. The individual thesis (35%) is written individually and submitted at the end of the course.

Corporate environmental and sustainability management

All organisations are impacted by social and environmental sustainability issues to some degree. To enable them to respond they need to understand the national and international regulatory environment, the business case for sustainability, effective strategic responses and sustainability measurement approaches.

The Corporate Environmental and Sustainability Management specialisation explores the complex mix of social, environmental and economic sustainability challenges and opportunities faced by organisations. You will explore how global and national environmental regulation influences organisations’ transition to sustainability. You will learn how to design, implement and facilitate strategies and solutions in corporate management for sustainable and accountable development.

Environment and governance

Governments, markets and civil society play important and inter-related roles in the governance of the environment. The term environmental governance is used to capture the full range of actors and organisations involved. Understanding how change occurs from the scale of the individual through to the broader society, and from local to national and international scales of governance is key to effective environmental governance.

There are a broad range of contexts in which transitions to more sustainable practices are needed, including environmental policy and analysis, planning, consulting, education, advocacy and management.

The Environment and Governance specialisation will develop your understanding of policy and governance to enable change and responsible action to support sustainability. You will learn to critically analyse problems of environmental governance and sustainability to enable informed solution development.

Environmental security

The challenges of global environmental security are diverse—from energy shortages, loss of biodiversity, extreme temperatures, emerging infectious diseases and food and water insecurity. Society must be equipped to deal with these challenges, with solutions supported by the best scientific evidence.

Globally there is a growing need for professionals with science literacy skills to interpret and translate the evidence about environmental security that is crucial to a wide variety of sectors and stakeholders.

The Environmental Security specialisation will provide you with the knowledge and understanding to guide the sustainable use of resources and protection of the natural environment, and to integrate this into policy and management.

International development and environment

Some of the hardest hit by changes in our environment are in developing nations. This requires tailored solutions that encompass economic change, social equity and environmental protection. To achieve sustainable development in poor and developing societies we need to move beyond conventional approaches toward transdisciplinary solutions that bring together academic and other kinds of knowledge, human rights, social justice and goals of ecological sustainability.

The Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment (IDBE) Master of Studies is a two year, part-time [University of Cambridge] degree which attracts candidates looking to expand their understanding of global challenges and opportunities facing the industry. The programme equips professionals for strategic decision-making, inventive problem-solving and evidence-based design and provides the skills and confidence to support and lead interdisciplinary design teams.

From structural engineers to transport planners, design managers to architects, the IDBE has enhanced the careers of built environment professionals all over the world.

Who is the course designed for?

The course is aimed at practising professionals with at least three years' work experience in the built environment. It is open to architects, engineers, and all those involved in commissioning, design, construction and management. It is offered by the Cambridge Institute of Sustainability Leadership in association with the Departments of Architecture and Engineering.

Aims of the programme

To equip professionals for strategic decision making, inventive problem solving and team leadership

To develop skills in effective collaboration and communication, particularly between clients, consultants, contractors, specialists and occupiers

To provide a strategic overview of the production of the built environment including current challenges faced by the construction industry such as technological innovation, global climate change, resilience and sustainability.

Teaching and learning

The course is part-time and lasts for two years. During that time, students spend six separate residential weeks studying in Cambridge at 3-4 month intervals, as well as taking part in an online module.

Teaching on the course is delivered though a mix of lectures, workshops and seminars during the residential weeks. Each residential week comprises an intensive programme of formal lectures (from leading practitioners and university academics), workshops and seminars.

A design project relating to the theme of the week is undertaken in small interdisciplinary teams, which present their design proposals to reviewers at the end of each of the weeks. Through the design project students apply and implement what they have been taught, as well as benefitting from the knowledge and expertise of their team members; in this, the design projects support experiential learning.

Supervision and learning support

In preparing the four written assignments (4,000 word case study; one 3,000 word essay, one 7,000 word group project; and a 15,000 word thesis in the second year) students are supported by academic supervisors whom they meet on an individual basis.

In the six course weeks, students are asked to work in small multi-disciplinary groups to think, discuss, draw, write and persuade in order to come to a unified solution to the set problem over the course of a few half days. Developed in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Oxfam and the EU, the course draws on the expertise of environmental and development NGOs as well as the educational community. It deals with the theory and practice of sustainability and enables you to explore and expand the role that EfS can play in educational, social, political and economic change.

Internationally recognised

Since its launch in 1994 this internationally recognised and innovative award has embraced and promoted diversity and inclusion. Our roots lie in the 1992 UN Earth Summit in Rio, Brazil, and EfS, the first ever masters programme of this kind, provides a dynamic interface between theory and practice in EfS and promotes the integration of environmental and development concerns in the emerging concept of sustainability while emphasising the importance of education's role in building a sustainable world.

Flexible study options

The course may be studied either full-time at LSBU, or part-time by distance/flexible learning. The part-time distance learning mode is particularly suitable if you are living overseas or working or who find it difficult to attend a traditional course. Students studying part-time by distance/flexible learning based in their home country are not required to apply for a visa. It is also possible to start by signing on for a short course (two modules). Many students start with the short course and then decide to continue for a further award.

The London Regional Centre of Expertise EFS (RCE) is hosted by London South Bank University and closely linked with the EFS programme. This provides opportunities for placements and projects as well as the chance to be part of a global learning space with over 130 RCEs. The centre is accredited by the UN University Institute for Advanced Study of Sustainability and also hosts seminars and conferences. The programme is enriched by EFS expert tutors who are practitioners in the field.

The programme runs an annual conference with recognised key note speakers in the field of EFS.

Employers have found that the programme has enabled students to develop and enhance work practices in the light of current theories and debates. This has led to a number of organisations sponsoring their staff to do the programme as a means of capacity building and staff development. About the course

The results of unsustainable human development in the 21st century are evident as climate change, species extinction, pollution, poverty and inequality become inescapable global realities. The next big challenge for society is to transform our economy to incorporate the principles of sustainability. This presents an exciting opportunity to rethink, redesign and rebuild a positive future for business practice.

The MSc in Sustainability, Entrepreneurship and Design (with Professional Development) is an 18-month programme – 12 months for the study at Brunel followed by a six-month professional development phase. There is an option to complete the MSc in Sustainability,
Entrepreneurship and Design in 12 months (without the professional development phase) but students will be encouraged to engage with the professional development phase to achieve the maximum from the programme.

Brunel University also offers the Graduate Entrepreneur post-study visa, which represents a perfect opportunity for our international graduates to apply their new skills in the UK following graduation.

The course is jointly run between the College of Health and Life Sciences, the School of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences, and Brunel Business School.

Aims

This programme will equip entrepreneurial minded graduates with two essential ingredients:

- firstly, the mindset and ability to play a key role in building a sustainable world – one that is not only prosperous, but also environmentally stable and socially inclusive
- secondly, hands-on experience, such that they can become entrepreneurs, business leaders, change-makers and innovators.

Upon graduating, students will be able to become key figures in local, regional, national or global businesses; holistic thinkers and visionary leaders in their communities, corporations, businesses, non-profit organizations and government agencies.

They will be encouraged to infuse environmental awareness into societies and make tangible contributions to the theory and practice of environmental protection, sustainable business and a circular (green) economy.

Teaching

The programme will be delivered beginning with an overview of core concepts and followed by progressively deeper consideration and application of the concepts later on through a self-directed learning approach. It is structured to provide leadership opportunities and move progressively from learning the "rules of the game" to "playing the game". This means that as the programme progresses it becomes less instructor-led and more student-led where students direct their learning towards their own needs and tap the collective wisdom of the group via project work.

There will be four integrated streams:

1. Ecological and sustainability theory
2. Leadership
3. Design and Innovation
4. Business planning and start up.

The benefits of this combination will be unique; students will be cross trained, drawing upon the resources of a world class university. They will develop three complementary networks of peers and alumni and engage in Brunel’s collegiate experience, interacting with students and faculty from three corners of the university. Through this combination, graduates will able to enter the professional arena with an energetic and inspired approach to societal change.

Professional development activities - following the multidisciplinary learning programme, students will undertake a six month professional development activity in which - for example - they will undertake an internship or start their own business. (The provision of incubator space for these students will be an integral part of the MSc and is another distinctive feature of the programme.
