The Master of Studies (MSt) in Sustainability Leadership is an interdisciplinary postgraduate degree that explores leadership responses to sustainability challenges and opportunities. This programme is accredited by the University of Cambridge and delivered by the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL).

The MSt is offered in association with the Departments of Architecture, Engineering, Geography, Land Economy and the Judge Business School. Both academic excellence and leadership on sustainability are prioritised in the competitive selection process, and in the design and delivery of the programme.

Aims of the programme

- To develop leaders who have a wide awareness and deep understanding of the social, environmental, ethical and economic challenges facing the world, and equip them to respond more effectively in their executive roles.
- To expose leaders and future leaders to a range of best-practice cases of how business, government and civil society are responding to these challenges.
- To help leaders to make a compelling ‘business case’ for sustainability in their sector and/or institutional context, and understand how best to put sustainability policies into practice.
- To give leaders insights into the academic debate on sustainability, including some of the key scientific and technological issues, and equip them with research skills relevant to sustainability.

Format

The primary approaches to teaching and learning are:

- taught sessions by academics and practitioners, who are thought-leaders and/or case study illustrators
- group work, involving dialogue, debate and presentations throughout the taught modules, as well as a group research assignment
- individual work, involving research and written presentation of findings on selected topics
- support and facilitation by a CISL-led team of faculty, tutors and supervisors from within the University
- intensive and collaborative e-learning programmes, including e-modules, online webinars and content-based discussions to maximize knowledge sharing.

Contact time

- Lectures: 35 hours per year
- Seminars and classes: 50 hours per year
- Small group teaching: 26 hours per year
- Supervision: 7 hours per year

Assessment

- Dissertation: 15,000 words maximum (including footnotes, tables and graphs but excluding appendices and bibliography).
- An analysis paper of 3,000 words maximum
- A strategy paper of 3,000 words maximum
- A group project of 5,000-7,000 words

Some assignments and the dissertation require literature reviews. The dissertation also involves an oral presentation.

Students are given formal feedback on their assignment and informal feedback throughout their course, including during supervisions. First year tutors give an annual progress report at the end of year 1 and dissertation supervisors provide termly reports during year 2.

Besides the short residential workshops, the core of the programme is an individual piece of work-related research and the development of a strategic action plan that is relevant to the participant's organisation.

A group project helps to ensure that as much inter-organisational learning takes place as possible. An online Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) facilitates communication and collaboration between the short, intensive workshops.

The course runs for nine months and encompasses the following key elements:

- A three-week preparatory phase;

- Ongoing virtual and non-residential learning activities, including preparatory materials (readings / videos / audios) in advance of the residential workshops;

This programme is designed for individuals who wish to improve their impact and effectiveness in leading and managing individuals, teams, and organisations within the sport business industry. Students will immerse themselves in the business of sport, enhancing their leadership capacity and business acumen in relation to the complex and rapidly emerging global sport business environment.

The programme recognises that contemporary leadership and management are multifaceted and there is a need to draw upon numerous perspectives to have an impact in the current international sport business environment. Programme Structure

ASSESSMENT

Corporate environmental and sustainability management

All organisations are impacted by social and environmental sustainability issues to some degree. To enable them to respond they need to understand the national and international regulatory environment, the business case for sustainability, effective strategic responses and sustainability measurement approaches.

The Corporate Environmental and Sustainability Management specialisation explores the complex mix of social, environmental and economic sustainability challenges and opportunities faced by organisations. You will explore how global and national environmental regulation influences organisations’ transition to sustainability. You will learn how to design, implement and facilitate strategies and solutions in corporate management for sustainable and accountable development.

Environment and governance

Governments, markets and civil society play important and inter-related roles in the governance of the environment. The term environmental governance is used to capture the full range of actors and organisations involved. Understanding how change occurs from the scale of the individual through to the broader society, and from local to national and international scales of governance is key to effective environmental governance.

There are a broad range of contexts in which transitions to more sustainable practices are needed, including environmental policy and analysis, planning, consulting, education, advocacy and management.

The Environment and Governance specialisation will develop your understanding of policy and governance to enable change and responsible action to support sustainability. You will learn to critically analyse problems of environmental governance and sustainability to enable informed solution development.

Environmental security

The challenges of global environmental security are diverse—from energy shortages, loss of biodiversity, extreme temperatures, emerging infectious diseases and food and water insecurity. Society must be equipped to deal with these challenges, with solutions supported by the best scientific evidence.

Globally there is a growing need for professionals with science literacy skills to interpret and translate the evidence about environmental security that is crucial to a wide variety of sectors and stakeholders.

The Environmental Security specialisation will provide you with the knowledge and understanding to guide the sustainable use of resources and protection of the natural environment, and to integrate this into policy and management.

International development and environment

Some of the hardest hit by changes in our environment are in developing nations. This requires tailored solutions that encompass economic change, social equity and environmental protection. To achieve sustainable development in poor and developing societies we need to move beyond conventional approaches toward transdisciplinary solutions that bring together academic and other kinds of knowledge, human rights, social justice and goals of ecological sustainability.

There is a growing demand for a new generation of practitioners to work in the sustainability and community sector, who are engaged and committed to sustainable development in a global context.

The International Development and Environment specialisation will develop your knowledge and skills to analyse the causes of poverty, disadvantage and environmental change, and work effectively with a wide range of groups to plan and implement development that is environmentally sustainable.

Our passion for a sustainable future

Developed in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Oxfam and the EU, the course draws on the expertise of environmental and development NGOs as well as the educational community. It deals with the theory and practice of sustainability and enables you to explore and expand the role that EfS can play in educational, social, political and economic change.

Internationally recognised

Since its launch in 1994 this internationally recognised and innovative award has embraced and promoted diversity and inclusion. Our roots lie in the 1992 UN Earth Summit in Rio, Brazil, and EfS, the first ever masters programme of this kind, provides a dynamic interface between theory and practice in EfS and promotes the integration of environmental and development concerns in the emerging concept of sustainability while emphasising the importance of education's role in building a sustainable world.

The EfS course at LSBU has been instrumental in the development of LSBU as a United Nations Regional Centre of Expertise in Education for Sustainable Development. Teaching and learning

We aim to help you become an effective agent for positive change in learning and education relevant for sustainability. We do so by enquiring into the kind of learning for change in personal, social and ecological spheres that is needed to help understand, develop and promote sustainability. When you complete our programme, you will have achieved the personal and professional development required to be an effective agent for change.

Flexible study options

The course may be studied either full-time at LSBU, or part-time by distance/flexible learning. The part-time distance learning mode is particularly suitable if you are living overseas or working or who find it difficult to attend a traditional course. Students studying part-time by distance/flexible learning based in their home country are not required to apply for a visa. It is also possible to start by signing on for a short course (two modules). Many students start with the short course and then decide to continue for a further award.

Sessions are delivered through distance learning and web activities with optional - Monthly Saturday day schools Fast Track - Monthly Saturday day schools.

Learning resources

In an emerging field like EfS the interface between theory and practice is even more important. Theory informs practice and practice in turn nourishes theory. That's why our course materials undergo continuous review and updating. Networking is an essential element for us to consolidate our premier position as a theory-practice interface in EfS. The Blackboard e-learning system used by our programme's provides a platform for students and tutors to learn, discuss and debate various aspects related to EfS, regardless of their location.

You'll receive all the materials they need for independent study within a set timescale, which includes:

• Supplementary material (e.g. additional written material or DVD)

Professional links

The London Regional Centre of Expertise EFS (RCE) is hosted by London South Bank University and closely linked with the EFS programme. Partners are drawn from a wide range of organisations including conservation groups, development education centres, universities and colleges, ethical business organisations, community groups. This provides opportunities for placements and projects as well as the chance to be part of a global learning space with over 130 RCEs. The centre is accredited by the UN University Institute for Advanced Study of Sustainability and also hosts seminars and conferences. The programme is enriched by EFS expert tutors who are practitioners in the field.

The programme runs an annual conference with recognised key note speakers in the field of EFS.

Employability

Employers have found that the programme has enabled students to develop and enhance work practices in the light of current theories and debates. This has led to a number of organisations sponsoring their staff to do the programme as a means of capacity building and staff development. Many EFS graduates have gone onto gain promotion, career advancement or have made use of the course to change their career direction.

Sustainability skills are an important career asset in the 21st century and this qualification has been recognised by employers, such as news media, National Environment Management Agencies, government ministries, schools, environmental and development NGOs. EFS graduates have gone onto gain promotion, career advancement or have made use of the course to change their lives or career direction. Examples of graduate jobs include education adviser UNICEF, Director of Communications, Transition Town volunteer organiser, Environmental News editor, education director botanic gardens, curriculum manager, schools’ inspector.

The results of unsustainable human development in the 21st century are evident as climate change, species extinction, pollution, poverty and inequality become inescapable global realities. The next big challenge for society is to transform our economy to incorporate the principles of sustainability. This presents an exciting opportunity to rethink, redesign and rebuild a positive future for business practice.

The MSc in Sustainability, Entrepreneurship and Design (with Professional Development) is an 18-month programme – 12 months for the study at Brunel followed by a six-month professional development phase. There is an option to complete the MSc in Sustainability,
Entrepreneurship and Design in 12 months (without the professional development phase) but students will be encouraged to engage with the professional development phase to achieve the maximum from the programme.

Brunel University also offers the Graduate Entrepreneur post-study visa, which represents a perfect opportunity for our international graduates to apply their new skills in the UK following graduation.

The course is jointly run between the College of Health and Life Sciences, the School of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences, and Brunel Business School.

Teaching

The programme will be delivered beginning with an overview of core concepts and followed by progressively deeper consideration and application of the concepts later on through a self-directed learning approach. It is structured to provide leadership opportunities and move progressively from learning the "rules of the game" to "playing the game". This means that as the programme progresses it becomes less instructor-led and more student-led where students direct their learning towards their own needs and tap the collective wisdom of the group via project work.

The first course of the program is online and addresses the foundations of global leadership. During the first year of the program, students are required to participate in a three-week on-campus residency. The residency course is followed by four online courses which the student may complete while living and continuing to work in their home location.

In the second year of the program, students attend a one-week on-campus residency. Following this residency, students have the choice of completing an Independent Study field trip or to join a group of students on an 11 day international cultural leadership field trip. In 2016 students traveled to Ecuador to complete their credits for this course. Daily excursions in Ecuador included explorations of bio diversity, environmental challenges, indigenous community issues, and micro-financed entrepreneurial needs of Andes women.

Students follow this international trip (or independent study activity) with a six-eight month long capstone project where they are to integrate and apply their global leadership skills in a context that benefits an organization, business or community.

Graduates will develop the competencies to: lead and manage change processes, build collaborative teams, create effective interagency partnerships, design and evaluate programs, foster innovation and creativity, communicate results and work effectively and respectfully across cultures, generations, and contexts.

Who It’s For

Professionals and executives who work in a global context within their own country or an international setting and who wish to be more globally minded, self-aware and resilient, able to work with people of diverse needs and cultural backgrounds, and are anchored to values of social purpose and sustainability.

This includes professional who work or desire to work in community based organizations, government organizations, international NGOs, international government organizations, indigenous organizations, international training or institutions of higher education or other types of organizations that have a globally oriented social purpose or peace keeping mission.

The MA in Global Leadership program is also for those in the domestic or international business sector who seek to be socially responsible and globally minded.

Five years of professional work experience that requires responsibilities leading people or projects is desirable, as is familiarity with traveling or living in different international settings. Positional management authority is not necessary. The flexible admission process combined with the blended delivery model enables students to learn without sacrificing their career.

Delivery model

The MA in Global Leadership is a two-year, 36-credit program consisting of on-campus residencies, online courses, and a practical project that will seek to make a difference to a community, organization, or group of people. The result is accessible, high quality learning with minimal professional disruption. Courses will specifically support the development of core knowledge, aptitudes, and skills of global leadership at the personal, community, and organizational levels. Elective courses will further support students to explore topics of interest and/or relevance in specific sectors of practice. This program has two residencies, a three-week residency in the first year and a two-week residency in the second year and culminates with an applied research project enabling students to integrate the skills and knowledge gained in the previous coursework in the examination of a real-world issue of significance to your organization or a global community.

Residency
The residency is a carefully designed period of intense academic study. The schedule of instruction and studying during the residency is structured to optimize the face-to-face access to instructors, develop networks with fellow students, and access the support services of the university if required. The typical daily schedule is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Team meetings, homework, and readings are done outside of these hours.

Online Learning
Distance courses are delivered entirely online through innovative, easy to use Internet technologies. Participants draw upon web resources as well as more traditional print media, while using online discussion groups and drop boxes to work towards the electronic submission of assignments. Prior to the beginning of each course, students are provided with a list of resources including textbooks and/or online readings, plus a detailed course schedule. Learning activities and assignments are designed to allow participants to identify the practical applications of the course content and to work with others to construct both a personal and shared meaning from their experiences. Each course requires a level of effort of approximately 10 hours per week. This varies from student to student and becomes easier as students familiarize themselves with Royal Roads University's distance learning technologies, and learn how to work effectively with team members in a virtual setting.

With increasing recognition of the impact of a world living beyond its means, the commitment to sustainable development in order to meet the needs of present generations without jeopardising those of future generations, has never been more apparent.

The MSc in Leadership for Sustainable Development will be of direct relevance to those who wish to develop the skills to make a difference in building a sustainable society. It is of direct relevance to recent graduates as well as those working in sectors dealing with sustainability.

AIM

This innovative programme has been designed in consultation with employers and academics to provide students with:

• in-depth understanding of the theory and practice of leadership in the context of sustainable development and an ability to identify and critically evaluate the role of leadership for sustainable development within a range of organisational contexts

• knowledge of the principles and core themes associated with sustainable development and an ability to critically evaluate best practice within a range of organisational sectors

• an ability to apply knowledge and skills gained from the programme in order to positively contribute to the sustainable development agenda through research projects

• competence in employability skills that will facilitate a professional approach to the work environment

STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

Course Content
The innovative programme embraces action based learning, facilitated through a series of work placements and group project to foster critical thinking and promote the use of initiative for problem solving and decision making. The course is a full time programme comprising seven modules over twelve months.

The course structure is as follows:

Semester 1:

• Leadership for Sustainable Development: to explore theories and practices of leadership in the context of sustainable development

• Foundations for Sustainable Development:1 to consider core themes underpinning sustainable development

• Foundations for Sustainable Development:2 to consider policies and strategies for sustainable development



Semesters 2 & 3:

• Sustainable Development in NGOs (Placement 1): to provide experiences of sustainable development and leadership in Non Governmental Organisations

• Sustainable Development in Governance (Placement 2): to provide experiences of sustainable development and leadership in Governance

• Sustainable Development in Business (Placement 3): to provide experiences of sustainable development and leadership in Business

• Effective Leadership: Group Project: to engage in a project to promote sustainable development through ‘experiential learning’.
Assessment

A range of assessment methods are used including research projects, group work, presentations, reports and essays, exam and seminar contribution.

CAREERS IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Graduates from this programme have developed successful careers upon completion of the MSc in Leadership for Sustainable Development. For example, past students have gone on to gain relevant employment with a range of organisations in the public, private and non-governmental organisations sectors. These include the Sustainable Development Commission NI, Action Renewables, the Environment and Heritage Service, Northern Ireland Environment Link, NIE Supply, George Best Belfast City Airport, the United Nations and the Consumer Council in Northern Ireland.

The success of the MSc Leadership for Sustainable Development programme was recently recognised when the course was highly commended in the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) Green Gown Awards 2006-7.
